  • The Scorpion II TMA from TrafFix Devices is the world's first MASH Tested, Passed, and Eligible Truck Mounted Attenuator.
    The Scorpion II TMA consists of strut and cartridge sections that are linked together on a support frame. The curved side rails are made from corrosion resistant aluminum tubes, which offer full width impact protection along the entire length of the unit. The side rails were designed to redirect errant vehicles away from the rear of the truck (coffin corner). Other manufacturers Crash Attenuator models have little or no side-angle impact protection.
    The aluminum boxes are filled with a moisture proof, aluminum honeycomb material. The boxes, together with the curved side rails, absorb the energy from an impacting vehicle. The aluminum boxes are painted with a bright yellow powder-coated finish, for lasting durability.

    As a TMA-driver in Sweden, this is very interesting to me.

    Always wondered what these were for...

      When I first saw them I wondered what the heck it did too. You see many specialized trucks these days. I thought that the Scorpion was not a safety device, but rather performed some kind of specialized construction task.

    What's the max speed you can be moving when you deploy them up or down?

      30mph is the max speed the truck can be moving when deploying a Scorpion or Scorpion II TMA

    So theyre made to be crashed into?

    • @TrafFixDevices

      That's correct! Impact attenuators, like the Scorpion II TMA, are designed to absorb the colliding vehicle's kinetic energy reducing the damage to work-zone vehicles, motorists, and personnel.

    Are these TMA usually bolted to the ground? Or is that just for testing purpose?

    • @TrafFixDevices
      @TrafFixDevices  3 роки тому +1

      The Scorpion II TMA cannot be bolted to the ground and is designed to be attached to the rear of flatbed or dump trucks. The Scorpions being tested in the footage are attached to flatbed trucks.

      @@TrafFixDevices Thank you for the reply.
      At 0:58 testing video , there's a large "triangle bracing bracket" looking thing that's on the ground, looks like it's bolted.
      Hence the question. I guess that's part of the vehicle?
