When someone asks me where I get my protein from I answer, the same place the animals get theirs from...the plants!!! I also ask if they know how much protein humans require? No one has been able to answer that yet. So, I let them know how much and that most Americans, including vegans get TOO MUCH!!! Notice how many dialysis centers there are around? Too much protein is HARD on the kidneys.
I was vegetarian for 15 years, vegan for 6 of those years, but I didn’t know how to cook and didn’t know much about nutrition so I went back to dairy, fish and fowl thinking I need protein! Now I’m WFPB vegan, feel armed with great recipes and techniques from WYW and a couple of other guys on YT and know this is right and don’t give a darn about protein! So full and so fulfilled, and so thankful for Dillon and others for sharing! thanks Dillon!!💚☮️🦋🌎🌱

I’m 6 foot 200 LBs, lift 3 days a week, throw the kettle bell 100 times daily, yet people still ask me about my “lack of protein” as if I’m wasting away before their eyes
THANK YOU. Over on Fitness/Weight Loss TikTok, it’s protein protein protein. And I’ll admit….they got ‘in’ a little bit & I was cussing at myself for not getting in over 100gr of protein…I mean, why??? I’m coming back ‘home’ & needed to hear this.
LOL@ the potato peel thing--I like the peels so if they're not too blemished or jacked up, I always include them. But if my potato looks sus, I'm peeling that sucker. Ain't nothin in that peel that isn't also in the potato
I'm so glad someone talked about this. I see so many people (especially vegans) spreading bs about you have to worry about getting enough protien and fat and certain micronutrients online as well as advertising protien supplements and multivitamins. I always try to spread the truth in the comments, but I don't think most people care to give my words a second thought.
I got asked a couple of days ago, where do you get your protein? I told them I don’t worry about it, they looked at me like I was crazy. Told me I needed it for strong bones.
So nice that you did this! Yes, I agree…the protein craze is making everyone both in and out of the Plant based/ Vegan world nuts! It’s a very new phenomenon by the way. My grandmother never once asked herself if she was getting enough protein. Nor did my dad. The protein bar marketing schemes (with an emphasis on protein) are a major reason this is happening. Maybe 10 years ago at best? I loved the food density chart! Bravo! ❤😎⭐️🥇🏆
This is so great info! Have been on plant based for over a month and I can say this is true. I was worried at first if I'm lack of protein. But after a while, I didn't see much weight change or any health issues. Instead I feel much more energetic and motivated during the day. So I don't worry about counting nutrients anymore. Thanks for sharing!
I agree 100%. There's plenty of protein in a healthy, well balanced _whole food_ plant based diet! But people should really pay attention to the part about getting adequate Calories. If you've just switched to a plant based diet and you are losing weight, then you're on a caloric deficit. This can be a good thing until your BMI starts getting really low. You may need to calculate Calories to ensure you're actually getting enough for weight maintenance. And if you're low in Caloric intake, then this might mean protein intake too. As mentioned, whole grains, legumes, nuts & seeds are excellent protein sources. But I've seen people who load up on bananas. Like a ridiculous amount. 2000 Cal of bananas = 24.5 g protein. And that's 2000 Cal! So you could mess things up if you adopt some sort of unbalanced, faddish approach. Or if you don't even eat enough Calories. Or just start eating a bunch of processed vegan junk and you might find that your protein intake really is below the recommended levels.
Another fantastic video Dillion and yes glad I don't have to be concerned about protein, fat, carbs on a WFPB. Thanks for sharing this informative video and love 🥰 it.
Hey Dillon! In one of your first videos you had a calorie density chart that had the calories per pound of food instead of using the 1-2% etc. Seeing that non-starchy vegetables are only 100 calories per pound mean a lot more to me than oils are 40X more dense. I see 100 calories per pound of non-starchy vegetables and I think, "Wow, I can eat a LOT of greens and not have to worry about my weight!"
Agreed 10000000% Count foods, not nutrients. Whole grains, legumes, root vegetables, and leafy greens is what I base my diet on, and it's been working out great these past years;) I like to play around with cronometer, as an educational tool, but I don't need to analyse my diet with it. Many years ago, I tracked everything I ate with cronometer, and after 2 weeks I felt like I was gonna go insane. It might be okay to use nutrition apps as guides, perhaps when refining a recipe to include more or less of a particular nutrient, but to actively measure and count nutrients day in and day out is tantamount to madness.
Thank you ❣️ You are one more source of good information in my research to side step diabetes. (Just got warned by my doctor) I have found books by four different doctors now advocating starches, veggies and fruits. Been doing this for a month now and the pounds are just sliding off!!!
i have been watching your videos and taken so much interest as i look for ways to eat healthy and keep to it.been plant based for 3 years.i have recently eliminated olive oil which i thought i needed like some docs say.have now subscribed.love your channel.
Great video! My confusion in general is where you say we don’t need to count macros but then we can’t have too much fat. I hear this a lot and it truly confuses me because then I find myself counting fat when I eat.
Just because you shouldn’t eat too much fat does not mean you need to count it. Just minimize the amount of nuts, seeds, soy, and avocado you eat during your weight loss phase, or eliminate them entirely during this time.
50 to 60 grams of protein is 1.763698 ounces to 2.116438 ounces. Sometimes I need that ounces conversion to get an idea of what it is! Just a few ounces of protein!
It’s my understanding when counting gram of protein in your meat products, it’s not the weight of meat itself, but the actual amount of protein in the meat itself. So, 1oz of meat has approx. 7 grams of protein in the meat itself. I was told I should eat 170g of protein which is 24oz by weight!
Thank you so much for this video! So glad I found your channel. I'm new to WFPB diet due to heart health issues. I'm about a week into this decision and have gone down many rabbit holes. LOL This video gives me comfort. I do have concerns however about brain health and Omega 3 (PUFA) which require marine animals intake to satisfy (i.e., sardines, salmon) - because it is my understanding that the body inefficiently converts plant based omega 3 (ALA) into the necessary EPA/DHA nutrients that we need. For now, I'll eat salmon to get the 1.1 grams required, knowing that PBAs are a risk. And given the cost and suspect quality of the Fish Oil supplements. Do you have any thoughts on this? As ever, thank you.
Why does my sugar goes up into diabetic range even after eating all veggies and starches. I cook with no oil. Or fats. If I add protein my sugar doesn’t spike much. I am confused. Just an observation.
Hi Dillion! Do we need to exercise more on this way of eating? I know carbs don’t make you fat but some people say you need to exercise more when you eat carbs. What kind of exercise should a woman 68 years old do on the way of eating?
I am somewhat embarrassed to say that I am struggling with weight loss, not because of any excuses. I have been saying there’s just too much overwhelming info and diets. Even the experts don’t even agree. Why so many diets? I suppose they can’t continue to make money with the same eating plan!! We have keto, calorie counting, macros, low carb, high protein, carnivore, vegetarian, paleo, sugar free, intermittent fasting, vegan, and the list goes on. Some are better than others. Bottom line, it’s all about calorie deficit. I don’t to bother with counting anything and plugging info into a weight loss app!! Our bodies were created to eat certain foods. I plan on eating vegan/vegetarian or plantatarian, but have been a good quality meat source once a week or every other week. I was told I should eat 170g of protein. But I thought about high protein and kidney issues. No thank you!!! I do see individuals on UA-cam who are vegans and have and have big muscles. And without protein powders or other protein supplements. Thank you for this video. I love the and thanks for not complicating the process. ❤😊
I'm not sure your wife has had to deal with this yet, but what about menopause and weight gain with being vegan? I'm 48 now and in menopause and I've been vegan since my early 20s and I'm active moderately and I eat a clean whole food diet of plants. My weight has jumped up 15 to 20 lb higher than it should be. And I feel like nothing I'm doing is working and I keep reading online that women in menopause need at least 100 g of protein per day plus strength training in order to start their metabolism burning fat again. I do use vegan protein powder because there's no way I could reach my protein goals without it. I can't seem to find any good vegan advice on menopause weight gain. I'm eating around 1500 to 1600 calories per day and I do enter all of my information into a nutrition tracker just to make sure that I'm getting a healthy variety of foods. I don't cook with oil and I rarely use any processed flour products. It's really discouraging because for what I'm eating I should be much thinner in my opinion and I have a fairly lean body all over. But it looks like I'm about 5 months pregnant in my belly. I don't like how I look in clothes and I'm always tempted to try to eat fish and vegetables or something because I feel like I'm getting too many carbs which I know is wrong. So I'm sticking to my vegan diet based on my ethics but it's very disheartening to step on the scale every month. Are any other vegan women struggling with this? I joined a weight loss group but I ended up dropping out of it because they wanted me to do intermittent fasting as well as something called carb cycling and I just feel like I should be able to look at what is the clean, healthy vegan food and what isn't an eat based on that. I also gave up all alcohol last year which was only red wine, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't adding any excess calories through drinks either.
What kind of protein would you like?, is one of my pet peeves as well. When they ask me, I say "No thanks, no animal cruelty on my plate", you can see their facial expression go void as the gears in their brain start turning and they try to process what you just said. It's funny to watch, try it.
I value your content,, but am beginning to realize that for someone old, some of your recommendations might not apply. (Example: old nerves need more fat etc.) I know you're not a doctor, but would appreciate your thoughts on that if you can find a place/time in your videos. Thnanks.
If you think your age requires a special diet then you should consult with your plant based doctor about this. If you’ve heard McDougall, Fuhrman, Klaper, Barnard, Campbell, or Esselstyn talk about this then point me to their words and I’ll be happy to include this information in the future.

Love this. That is such a great answer!!
@@PlntRun44 I do that too ;)
I usually ask them, if our human breast milk only has around 1% protein for a growing baby, then why would we adults need so much more.
