    Being anonymous is by far the best course to take in life, regardless of one's wealth or lack of wealth. It simply eliminates many potential issues.

    I was surprised when I would meet up with a group of expats for coffee in Cebu that they would have arguments about income, they ask flat out "how much is your pension" which in the US would be considered rude behavior. Refusing to answer would lead to conflict within the group, even leading some to blows. I started thinking that not the best of us was coming here.

    I used to do regular interviews on several financial channels. I also had a weekly article in some major newspapers. At first I was very excited about the interviews but soon got a bit tired of it. Then one day I dropped by a clinic for consultation and the doctor recognized me. That's when I knew losing my privacy was bad. I thought what if that doctor lost money from my financial tips and he's about to stick a needle in me. I stopped all media promotion and have enjoyed my anonymity since.

    Just being a foreigner with a young lady tells the locals you have money, or should I say they automatically think you do. Buying property and building a home puts a bigger target on your back. Having a UA-cam channel is a red flag because they know the vloggers make a good monthly income It's just a well-known fact the locals think all foreigners are rich. This is why I traveled with many friends and locals on my visit until I learn the ropes, its much safer

    Successful people stay quiet. That's not to say you cannot be successful while saying things. It's just that keeping to yourself, not revealing personal information, can make your life easier, smoother, less fraught with drama. That is a form of success.

    Those who focus on 'image' and/or status do so at the detriment of actual wealth. They are also indicating they are wealthy and wonder why people are coming to them for loans, business ideas and other unwanted attention they'd rather not deal with. If you think you're wealthy or actually are wealthy, it's always best to not show it off or comment on it and It could be perceived as envy. "Perception is reality.". Maybe they are attention seekers with inner insecurities. Image is nothing more than a facade. A facade is like putting lipstick on a pig.

    Great content, and accurate for the most part. That comes from someone that actually spends money to be anonymous and fits many of your descriptions. On the luxury items and clothing/cars, don't confuse frugal w/ being "on the spectrum". When you quote FB CEO and Elon, you ar talking about people that extremely socially poor and have diagnosable conditions like Asperger's and such. They dress/behave the way they do as a consequence of their condition, not because they found some ancient secret. There is also a big difference between new and old money. New/poor money has an inherent need t announce to the world they got something. Old money does not have that need as they were born into an environment that having nothing HAS NEVER been an option in the universe.

    A house is both an asset and a liability. If you outright own a house 100% equity without debt then it is pure asset. It will generate income once sold and the gain is realized. My home in NorCal is over a million, 7 bedroom. Fortunate enough to buy it when it was only 480k during the housing crash. Timing is everything.

    If you want to feel super rich, just be in the Philippines. If locals or casual acquaintance foreigners pry about my finances I honestly reply that I do whatever I want to do and go wherever I want to go. One of the best home improvements I have seen was with a short term rental in the general population side of Puerto Morelos the Yucatan peninsula Mexico. After outside the front door was about a 3 meter patio, after that was a tall lockable wrought iron fence and gate, it discouraged vendors selling things you did not want and people with phony wore out pharmacy scrips wanting people to finance it, same as the Philippines.

      Many expats don’t have a too much money problem, they have a too little money problem. If a guy has too much money, he has to carefully navigate the relationship with his SO, especially here. Social pressure may be applied to get him to spend more than he is comfortable with spending.

    Hey Alex! I've got the musical great idea of the millennium! Since "Robchella" appears so much in the background, we can start a music festival in Dumaguete based on Coachella and make billions overnight🤣
    If that were actually a great idea, I'm sure the Kpop industry wo: uld be focusing on hosting concerts in Dumaguete rather than the SM Mall of Asia.
    Regarding the friend who drove a Honda Accord: he indirectly was providing jobs to people in Ohio.

    Alright, so thinking anyone earning $1300/month is wealthy, really depends on the cost of living where you live, wouldn’t you agree? From what I’ve been hearing, $1300/month is hardly enough to live on in the Philippines, unless you don’t mind living in a Bamboo hut, never travel and only live like a local eating rice and beans. Are you willing to live like that? I will tell you, it would be absolutely impossible to live in my home country of Canada only earning $1300/month. I could probably barely survive on $1300/week. A 1-bedroom apartment to rent in my hometown of Canada is $2500~$3000 now. Anything less than $1300/week and I’d be living on the street. I’m serious. This is no joke.

    • @EasternDreamer615
      @EasternDreamer615  Місяць тому +2

      I spend about half that each month and I’m happy 🤷‍♂️ but I readily admit it’s not for everyone. I’ve been meaning to do an apartment tour at some point but I want to do so in a way that doesn’t disclose my location publicly.

    • @newafricanforum
      @newafricanforum Місяць тому +1

      1300 a month is way below minimum wage in Nz and with that you would definitely be on the streets in Auckland, unless the government helps you out. In the Philippines if you live in the province and don't do anything fancy, you could make it with that but if that's the only money I have, I wouldnt sleep well at night. Our daughter fractured her arm in Singapore and the bill for 2 nights in hospital and a pin in the arm was 10k. Sure you could say the Philippines is cheaper but at times you just want to spend a weekend away and actually if you have to go to ICU, the Philippines is also expensive. So unless I am retired and thats the only income I have, I would be hesitant to move to the Philippines with 1.3k coming in , literally leaving money on the table in the west😂

    • @ShikokuFoodForest
      @ShikokuFoodForest Місяць тому

      @ Minimum wage after taxes in Canada is about $2600/month. It’s hard to believe, but today this is not a living wage in Canada unless sharing accommodation with several people and going to the food bank each week. Rent, utilities, public or private transportation, gas/vehicle maintenance, food, clothing, laundry, etc. just at a minimalist level is well over $2600. Never mind going out for lunch, dinner or even a beer or coffee with friends. Affording a vacation is impossible even earning $3000/month. In the Philippines, I could live a very minimalist existence for perhaps $1000, but it would be a very ‘bare-bones’ life - probably never going out and certainly not having a Filipina GF and no traveling. As you say, if you ever need to go to a hospital for anything, you must have cash in your hand and pay in advance otherwise hospital staff will let you bleed to death on the emergency reception floor or have permanent brain damage in the event if a stroke. Of course we are told, if we don’t like it, we can leave.

      @@Ghekko-kw3zz Is it really absurd? So you’re saying the average urban Filipino earning only ~$433/month can live comfortably? Really?! So are you saying they are completely satisfied with the lifestyle they can provide for themselves on that wage? Are they living completely independently without any family support and paying for everything themselves on their own not sharing any expense? OK, if this is true as you say, I’d really like to see a detailed budget and what kind of lifestyle / diet, etc. they can afford for $433/month. If it is such a wonderful life they have, then why can’t expats live on such a low budget? BTW, what’s your monthly budget?

    I'm a minute in and this is already a mess.
    Yes by "global" standards $1300/mo USD might not be "broke" but very few expats live like locals. They want/try to live like an American...a broke American, but a little less broke.
    You are equating "broke" to money. Broke is also a class. "The Beverly Hillbillies" had a lot of money but lived as broke people with "broke" being defined relative to most Americans. Doesn't mean they were unhappy.
    Then you equate "broke" to "losers". That as far as I wanted to listen.
    There are more expats in Baguio than maybe all of southern PH yet not a single Tuber I know of out of Baguio. No expats in Baguio calling famous Tubers to please interview them. The expats begging to get interviewed...sad. Almost no expat Tubers even visit Baguio or any other well to do places in PH other than BGC. This is because "successful" expats have no need to waste time making videos even though many of them have less money than the "broke" expat Tubers. They're successful at being comfortable with themselves, happy with a simple life.
    The Tuber expats are almost all doing it for the more, more, more hamster wheel. Partly for attention to. And of course their main audience is broke dudes in the West. Many may have money, but they make endless bad choices and think PH is the solution. They head straight for Dumaguete.
