Nice presentation. I was hoping for something a little more sophisticated too. Its little tradeoffs with Affinity that I have found in the last few years compared to Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Since it was announced that Canva acquired Affinity earlier this year I will wait and see how it goes. I hope Canva does not ruin the ethos that Affinity shaped. The reason I left Adobe after 20 years is because they changed for the worse.
Hi Trent, love watching your videos - I’m really surprised there isn’t a vertical option in the text menu, even the more limited Photoshop Elements has the option to do vertical text, it’s a bit of a faff trying to make it work in Affinity, especially with some of the more unusual fonts, hopefully it may be added at some point, keep up the good work 😊
It's an interesting tip but, I learnt in typography class that it's best not to put letters underneath each other for two reasons: 1: the text is less legible than if you just rotate the word 90°, with the R facing down and 2: typographically, letters underneath each other don't always look pretty, A letter i fits on a quarter letter block, most other letters on a half letter block and the letters M and W on a square letter block. This gives you vertical white that jumps in and out of line.
Hi @@TechnicallyTrent Indeed, it may prove useful in some cases. Despite my comment, I always find your explanations clear and well theorised. Keep up the good work.
@Trent QUESTION: How can I fit text inside an image in Affinity Designer? Say you have a profile image of a person. I use the Pen Tool to outline it, and now I want to fill that shape with say any article of text so that it fills in the shape an I can take the shape to zero, but the shaped text remains recognizable as the profile.
Hi @rocketgrowthstrategiesdigi4535, thanks for the question! If you used the Pen tool to make a shape, then with that shape selected, you can click the Frame Text Tool and use the shape as a frame for the text. I'll make a video about this soon, so stay tuned :)
I was trying to figure this out recently. I used the “enter” method. I didn’t think about using the text frame tool, thought it was only for longer texts. Also, how did you make the font previews so big? Can you show us? I wanna do that too lol
Hi @dccd673! I didn't do anything specifically for the fonts themselves. I think it is mostly a function of the font's properties, the OS you are on, and the screen resolution. For my computer that I record on, I have it set to show the Windows UI at a slightly bigger size (I think it is a Windows Usability setting). I don't like it that big for daily work, but I do like it for recording videos. Hope this helps! Trent
And now We'll pop in to be nitpicky and pedantic to state that you should seek out typefaces specifically designed to line up vertically (yes, they exist), and to use ALL CAPS only when doing this. Don't neglect the Character/Paragraph/Glyph panels (specifically the Leading and Kerning options). All that said the lack of a Vertical Text Tool in Affinity is yet another One of Those Things they need to address.
Hi @FlameForgedSoul, I agree. Text layout is a subtle art, and just making text vertical doesn't always look good. Hopefully we get a proper tool for it at some point!
Perfect timing!!! Loving your guides Trent!!!
Just learned a new way of doing vertical text. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for this, needed to do this a while back and there was no info to be found. Appreciated.
Good one, I wondered how to do this in Affinity. Thanks.
Muy bueno!, muchas gracias!,
Spacing tip alone ... 🔥

Hi @MrMcFountain, I agree, it usually has readability issues. But there are some useful scenarios where it can be helpful, particularly with signs.
