Shark expert explains the rise in attacks off South Australia coast

- Shark expert Andrew Fox warns that the increase in attacks in 2023 could be due to changing environmental factors.
It comes as the last attack in Innes National Park near Marion Bay on Thursday is the fifth shark attack in South Australia this year.
“In the last year we have had five attacks with three fatal attacks which is significantly more than just a couple over the last eight previous years,” Mr Fox told Sky News Australia.
“These anomalies could be due to changes in their prey sources that they're migrating through the area.
"There's been four years of El Nino followed by La Nina, so those sort of environmental conditions can change where food is distributed and that changes the shark's behaviour."
RIP to the kid. Very sad for the family. But I don't understand why people serve themselves up on a dinner plate for these sharks and then act surprised when somebody gets attacked
Nothing and no one will get me to go in the water on any beach in Australia.
He was dressed as a seal, paddling a foam dinner plate, in waters where sharks are known to be.
I agree the white sharks may think ur a seal 😢 always on surf boards !!! Hello folks. Circle of life fish after fish after fish and climate change 😢
Simple - South Australia runs shark tours in dive cages. They burly up the sharks for photos and put humans in with them. In cages- But the shark is still taught that the thing that looks and smells like a human is a food source!
What are you talking about 🤦♂️
Not sure how you came to that conclusion because there's many more shark attacks in NSW, WA and Qld. Overall, there's less attacks in SA.
@@Misslastcentury There is a documented map of migration of the sharks from SA along to the WA coast. There is also a correlation between the rise of shark tourism and attacks. Ie fatal shark attack in WA in 1967, then next was 26 years later. Now it is multiple per year.
If that's the case wouldn't sharks increasingly be wary of humans because we often spear them and catch them in nets? The tagging process probably isn't pleasant either, nor knawing their teeth on metal cages and boats, getting torn up by propeller blades and so on.
@@danieledmunds588 I see your point regarding shark tourism and attacks. There's an excellent spreadsheet available online Australian Shark Incident Database which does show the majority of attacks occur in WA, NSW and Qld.
Years of "sharks are harmless/not monsters" messages are making us come full circle. They _are_ dangerous. We shouldn't be hysterical, but we shouldn't also be complacent or ignorant about the dangers.
You do sound hysterical. No one is forcing anyone to go into the ocean.
@@frnk537 Just cause you're scared of the water doesn't mean everyone else should miss out. We need to put up shark nets and drum lines. We also need to hunt and kill the killer sharks. Some of the tagged ones are known to attack again and history has shown that some sharks are aggressive and repeatedly attack
@@westyboi1845 lol!! You're the one who sounds like their scared. I'm merely saying that I don't feel sorry for morons who want to earn Darwin Awards because they think the ocean is theirs- news flash, meth head: humans don't belong in the ocean. If you want to be shark food, go ahead. We shouldn't be culling or doing anything hysterical to accommodate Darwin Award nominees in their selfish quest. Thankfully governments disagree with you overwhelmingly too. 🤣😅
Sharks numbers should be thinned out. Great White Shark jaws could be sold for Tourism value@@frnk537
stay out of their domain you'll be alright, it's not like they will attack you walking down the street like other humans do.
More sharks, more swimming more surfing = more shark attacks......don't have to be an expert to work that out.
Nah dude, some sharks are behaving differently…. Where I live the number of the people at the beach are the same as it was in the 90’s… The waters are loaded with sharks even the lake.. I’ve seen GW,tigers, bulls hammerheads the list goes on and on zero attacks… that’s in the lake…
@@Goofydownrangeyer dude
I reckon 40 years back there were more people at the beach than nowdays, particularly outside of Sydney etc
@@aussiebatler yeah dude,,, the big ones are behaving differently that’s for shore… Stockton beach is a nursery for GW
@@Goofydownrange was that 'shore' intentional?
The thing that seem to be glaringly neglected in this interview “from shark expert” is that it has been that for 16yrs in SA and over 20yrs in NSW since GW’s received protection status. It is no secret that populations have increased as well as that of size. Couple that with population growth and Australia’s love for the ocean there is a solid likelihood of more attacks and sadly more fatalities.
Facts
Oh well. I don't see many great white sharks walking on land, maybe the sea is where they belong? and humans belong on land? Just a radical thought..
@@frnk537 Nothing wrong with humans being in the water as long as they are aware of the dangers. Life is risk/reward. Of the five deaths this year, millions more had a great time at the beach.

The rise in "shark attacks" is proportional to the increase in those who do not possess English as a first language.
💯😂😂😂😂
Most drownings certainly .
Na, just drownings. Sharks don't care what language ya speak.😅
bit rough m8
All the victims in SA recently were Aussies (locals) so not sure how you came to your conclusion 🤔. Some drownings where the people don't understand English though.
They’re hungry! Would be my expert opinion.
Straight to the point. You my friend made more sense than the yobbo in this interview. "Just don't go into the water"
Anything to do with feeding sharks and attracting them to people with the shark diving ect…..
We have turned sharks into these glorious, protected animals. They're mindless predators. We don't kill them, we don't like using shark nets and we don't have any sense - like NOT surfing or swimming in areas where they're known to inhabit. I feel terrible for this poor kid and his poor family - it's a horrible way to go and a horrible disaster to have to live with, as the loved ones. We should be educating people on where it is safer to swim and surf. Now we just do whatever and act shocked after the fact.
Awww have a sook. Sharks live in the sea, I know that might shock you to hear, given how mindless and ignorant you must be.
Fair enough, but here in WA sharks are appearing in normal swimming beaches, very close to shore lately
The Chinese have the right idea. Shark fin soup. I don't know if you can get it anymore in Australia. Probably not, too politically incorrect. I remember as a kid in the 1970s trying it in a Chinese restaurant.
@@thinkingallowed7042 the sharks have it better, eating Darwin award winners 🤣
@@thinkingallowed7042allegedly the sharks that are killed for that are small harmless ones, and they die by drowmimg bc their fins are sliced off and they are left to drown😮 I saw a documentary on It years ago😮
We ate all their fish and now they eat us. 90% of the oceans large fish are gone. What are the large sharks going to eat instead. Makes sense
Never surf off a peninsula in SA. These notorious seal hang-outs are drawcards for sharks. Always surf in the bays. Surf wisdom too late for this poor little guy.
Are there signs up regarding that? Because in my area there is simply no info available at all and our beaches are unpatrolled.
You can find them anywhere. They've been seen in Port Augusta
@alexisc4922 some places are more frequented than others depending on prey, nursery areas etc
My dad was attacked in Black Head bay nsw. His leg from below his knee was eventually amputated. It's been a huge explosion of whites and that's just the tagged ones. I watch them on the app and they're constantly around my local foster/Tuncurry area. Its time we start taking some preventative steps
Poor kid.
After seeing that shark attack in Sydney Australia couple of years ago i dont go near the water 🌊🦈🇦🇺
RIP young fella❤️. Condolences to family and friends❤️
I remember in Brisbane back in 2004. On the front of the newspaper was a shot of this shark that bit someone in half off West beach in Adelaide. I now live in Adelaide.. After reading that I dont go above knee height in water. Not even the bath.
Sad for the boy and his family.
Yeah, when the movie Jaws was released, I was never comfortable in the ocean again. I’m not willing to take the chance.
do u remember if it said they were deep in the beach or like shallow level where the attack occured?
coz west beach is my regular lol
My expert opinion stay out of the water or be fish food.
Every single year they have a story like this. And every time, they pull out a expert.

I read the shark was a white tip. Jacques Cousteau said the white tipped oceanic was the most dangerous shark in the ocean. It was the shark that attacked the men in the water when the USS Indianapolis was sunk in WWII. That was the event described in Jaws. When I was a kid I would do anything in the ocean. At 13 I would go 400 yds out from the beach snorkeling. Now I'm more cautious and glad I was lucky. Could have been hit by a boat
Apparently, people are quite bad at recognizing shark species in attacks. The Shark Biologist on Shark Bytes covered the topic and said, oceanic white tips rank super low and its more likely that their attacks are miss identified as great whites.
Your information was incorrect - we don't get white tipped oceanic sharks here in South Australia.
I believe you are right, because one of the witness said white tip, not great white when interviewed. But I do believe they are from very deep waters, don't know if they are common in that part of Australia though.
Bollocks, GW are way more savage
Tragic for the family - the death of kids from sharks is always the worst and I wish the family all the best. I am a surfer who has found himself in the water with a shark on numerous occasions. Most passed with the shark really not interested or simply curious as to what we were ... but in one off the coast of Mozambique the tiger shark had murder on it's mind. Luckly we got out the water quickly enough, but then stood and watched as the shark spent the next 30 minutes or so hunting up and down the deep back channel aggresively looking for us. My best friend stopped surfing after this experience and only recently with his kids getting interested picked it up again. I think sharks are like people, they get hungry, moody and some are more aggresive than others - but criticaly they will always go for the easiest opportunity and prey. It's often just luck as to the mood of the shark you meet. I accept shark numbers are growing and together with increased human numbers in the water - attacks may well become more frequent. But beyound the common sense things we can do I do feel humans also have to make sharks afraid of them. I remember in the Philippines being told by the locals they did not fear sharks but sharks feared them as people there ate them. Attack numbers are low the Phillipines despite the country being home to all the major deadly species of shark. Smarter brains than mine might find a way to bring back fear of humans in sharks with classial condition - and depite how amazing it looks I am not sure swimming with sharks is always a good thing.
What a lovrly young man taken ftom his family the point is these apex predators are in those waters we has humans enter at our own risk. They has an animal only see pertential food its not personal to them . Very sad.
The fact that millions of people go into the ocean each year and the statistics of shark attacks are still so low, we should be very grateful. Enough shark propaganda!
Sharks are a waste of space.
Sharks are no different from any other animal, when they are hungry they eat !
We live in the Adriatic (very low marine life in general) and still never go out to swim in deep water…y ‘all just wanna play with death at this point
Quint explained it perfectly
Watch Jaws, the first one you’ll understand too
A précis, use commonsense. 🇦🇺👍🍺
I'm not a so called expert fyi. We don't do well in water, sharks do very well in water, if we go into the water we are at the bottom of the food chain. End of lesson. It's sad that a kid lost his life but predators dont discriminate.
Condolonces to the family and friends of this young lad. A good chance or likelihood we have certain individual GW’s engaging in serial predatory behaviour towards human in locations along Australia’s coastline. Yes it is also probably opportunistic but these are creatures of hunting habit. If your in the wrong place at the same time they are there, look out.
It's a food availability ratio. Seals are protected, whales are protected. The white shark number have increased substantially and so has the amount of surfers. Simple maths
South Oz is a shark hotspot. You enter the water at your own risk.
Um yeah, sharks will bite you. Even tigers can kill you, snakes, bears, crocodiles and spiders can kill you too. I heard of someone getting killed by a bee. This is why we watch out for them.
I'm no expert, but there are sharks in the sea, especially in Southern Australia, where they are well known to be prolific.
There is a snapper fishing ban.. one of there favourite sources of food.
"SHARK EXPERT" THEY HAVE AN EXPERT FOR EVERY OCCASION.
I'm guessing your phone doesn't ring requesting your expertise on any topic whatsoever then?

You need an expert to tell you about how when animals are hungry they must eat?
They can probably smell a sandwich in an esky those monsters.
Yes, humans do have a great sense of smell.
And fear through treachery....
Now what? I thought it was the drugs
What’s hard to understand? They’re predators, for God’s sake.
Perhaps we could explain to sharks that it's fine to eat seals, fish and whales but they must leave humans alone.
We may be dealing with a man-eater, i hope that's not the case but i have been told this one may strike again? Watch out swimmers??
Or maybe just don't swim? Sharks live in water, we don't.

Great whites have been protected in Australia for around 30 years, humpback whale and seal populations have greatly increased in that time too. Unless this protection is removed at some point the risk of shark attack will continue to rise each year….
No.
Great white sharks live in the sea, humans live on land... It's not rocket science. Maybe you should swim in the ocean and earn yourself a Darwin Award too?

@@AceBaseKingOfSpace haha yes, I should change it up a bit given that I'm dealing with so many thick people 🤣
The more we swim or dive around them, the less they fear us. They are getting too used to our presence and they take more curious bites, which are often fatal. It's not a shark problem, it's a human problem. People like Ocean Ramsey aren't helping. We should leave sharks alone if we really want to help them.
And it was probably nearest Seal colony he shouldn't have been there in the first place
