Funny how people look down on Tokyo Drift when it was the only one in the franchise that revolves around cars and street racing. The first ones were undercover cops with street racing sprinkled on before they became mission impossible fantasy movies later on. Tokyo Drift really was a hidden gem.
I would say 3 was more so about the cars but I still think 1&2 did a pretty good job. The police chase scene into the garage in 2F2F is one of my favourites to this day and still has more variety in cars than 4 onwards. They were racing films with a story but like you said the latest ones are just mission impossible with some cars added for flavour
This and the older Need for Speed series games were exactly what drew me into cars and racing. When I told my uni roommate that I love cars and racing, he asked me, "how many Fast and Furious movies have you watched?" I said, "all 7 of them"
The Fast and the Furious came out about a year and a half after I lucked into owning a tuner car gem: a 1997 Eclipse GSX (the AWD variant). I paid basically nothing for it, with only 13k miles, and it was sex on wheels, in addition to being one of the most simultaneously awesome and frustrating cars I've ever owned. I took it to the drag strip. I learned a lot very quickly. By the time The Fast and the Furious came out, I was in the 12's. I had swapped turbos twice, tweaked my own fuel and timing maps, and even tuned my camshafts. All via datalogging third gear pulls and 1/4-mile runs. I mention this because this movie was basically made for me. It checked all of my boxes, but... I still expected it to suck. The Hollywood version of something has to be entertaining more than it has to be realistic. I can't help but compare TF&TF to another movie I love, 1995's Hackers. Both are great movies in spite of dumbing down their source material.
Great review, Josh. This movie defined my childhood and teenage years, and the only thing my friends at the time could agree on was that cars were cool. We played Need for Speed all weekend and argued over which upgrades were best to get first (my buddies always went power, I preferred handling). I probably watched this movie over a hundred times, since that’s what you did as a kid in those days.
Oh man I hope that bit at the end was a hint to you making a video on Tokyo Drift. Absolutely love that film, its the one i have the most nostalgia for.
Don't let this take away the fact that Hector is going to be running 3 Honda civics with spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry's and he ordered 3 T66 turbos with NOS and a Motec system exhausts.
The Fast and the Furious franchise, is like Car Culture in general. Some people just don’t get it, and thats fine, but when you’re able to enjoy it, you fucking enjoy it lmao

I mentioned this while watching one of the f&f movies with my dad. He explained to me that this is actually realistic as, when racing, you have to upshift and downshift multiple times, especially when turning
