I always draw around the outline with the point of the knife first, it helps me not to cut too much away or into the shape. I love this little rooster

Simple carve made difficult by your choice of wood. Looks hard to carve by knife, may better suited to chisels. But you succeeded and made full 3D . Impressive work

Hey, thank you! I do prefer harder woods, although these whittles can be all done with any wood available... Hard wood is so good on its own, it might not be easy in the process, but the result is usually satisfying :D

Totally not against using scroll saws and band saws to short cut some of the high labour carving tasks but it is also nice and impressive to watch someone carve a big arse chunk of hardwood and make something beautiful. Well done!

Scroll saws are really handy, would use one gladly :D they definitely save time and effort. But I guess it is also a good skill to try and manage with what you've got... Thank you very much for your kind words!

Great job! Linseed oil on oak gives a very nice finish!) 👍🙂 I started carving a year ago, but I used only basswood until now. Would like to try this.)) Just a little afraid, that maybe little details could break off.

Yeah, linseed oil is magical (I guess, oil in general is). I love how wood changes colour and transforms. Hmm, yes, such tiny details as wattle (that thingy under the beak) might break, but you can make it less prominent. Just make it a bump on the throat!
