I love reading the responses to this great and Groovy days of LOVE...MUSIC...AND PEACE..frim everyone who had been there and the bands they really liked, Me I liked them all, and some were ones that I can still hear when I close my eyes, only got a little sleep, but I didn't want to miss anything, or anyone...as I said in my previous posts on here...I wish I could go back in time..to these 5 days that 3 of my friends and I had the best times of our lives and to be young and still love these bands and the music 55 years later..it blows my mind...Can you dig it..!!! I'm 73 now, had jyst turned 18 on Aug.13th, graduated from High School in June, so off 4 of us went on the 13rh, a groovy Birthday Present !! There were so many cars on the highway, we were lucky to get there Thursday and found a spot in a field to park. And walked the rest of the way. So many great moments, and the band's were great, to wake up with the Who one morning and to wake up to my Favorite..Jimi with the white fringe glistening so glad we stayed until late Monday...course it was a traffic jam leaving, but no hurry. The weather...we didn't mind..we had brought some food and water and other cool things.!! People getting aling, and didn't matter what you looked like or what you were doing, it was their own Bag Man and some joined in, some didn't. My favorite was Jimi..!! The who.was awesome, Janis so soulful with that voice, Jefferson Airplane was great, Grace had a voice that even tho the band was tired, she still sang out, I liked Ravi Shankar,too...rhe Citar was a different instrument. So unusual at a Rock festival...CCR to start out..and even tho some delays cause of the

But I am ready to see them now. Bob Dylan will be here in Florida next month. I'm trying to get tickets..those 3 are the best, and it would have been great to see them at WOODSTOCK!!!

The weather, it was worth it. We all found such Groovy people to occupy our time until the next band came on.. Sly and the Family Stone, to perform in front of all of us ...millions of people some didn't know this group, Motown was what Was Happening on the Scene, and they Rocked...The Band... they all played sets that had you dancing, with the person next to you, didn't matter what time it was, some slept, passed out..and a lot of us stayed up for most of the 4 days... at least we tried to... I didn't want to miss any moment!!! We sure could have used a camera!! But the best memories are inside your mind...forever...It was Far Out Man...

I was somewhere else when Ten Years After played, but I will never forget Santana there. I met him and Jack Cassidy with Paul Kantner at Al's Attire in SF, Paul lived upstairs, and our Cafe was across the street. I asked Jack if he remembered being picked up by a kid in a tractor thing with seats attached. He said yes, and I said, I was that kid! We shook hands and he was really nice to me. Carlos too.

Although I am a massive Hendrix fan and fully agree that his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner is a masterpiece and deserves its place at number one, I do think that Santana's performance of Soul Sacrifice should be in there somewhere. Pretty much unknown at the time and reputedly on acid when they unexpectedly took the stage, they played their asses off with the very young Michael Shrieve giving a fantastic performance on drums.

Woodstock wasn’t the send off of the 60s, not at all. The Stones did that at Altamont Speedway in CA, that was pathetic & sad.

Logistically this event was a total disaster. Food ran out. Rain soaked everything and coated what wasn't soaked with mud, As they said, scheduling was total chaos due to the traffic situation summed up best by Arlo Guthrie crowing "The New York State Throughway is closed, man". The only way in was by helicopter. Richie Havens opened the show because it was time to start and none of the scheduled opening act had arrived. Richie played for over three hours, running out of songs that had been prepared for his set with his band most of whom weren't on scene yet. He actually tried to leave the stage a couple of times only to be told that nobody else was there yet. His finale, the song "Freedom" was a totally impromptu performance being made up on the spot. Alvin Lee referenced the transportation situation when he introduced his classic by calling it "I'm Going Home" then adding wryly "By helicopter". After the rain finally settled down, National Guard helicopters flew over dropping dry clothes and supplies to help deal with the mess.
At the end of the festival, Michael Lang and his partners were thinking that they had lost their collective asses financially. Vendors, staff, and musicians all had to be paid. As the festival began, it quickly became obvious that they were being completely overwhelmed and basically quit selling and taking tickets since the fencing had disappeared very early on. This meant that the only source of income was from the pre-sale tickets. Lang even said so in the documentary when he was asked how they had done financially. He literally laughed out loud saying "Are you kidding? We're taking a bath" He quickly followed that with a gesture toward the crowd saying "But look at this. You can't buy this". DOn't feel to bad for them for that though. Once they slept for a couple of days afterward, they sat down and started looking at what they had to work with and how to market it. None of the people backing this festival is hungry today, I'll guarantee that.
With all that being said though, the spirit of Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm in urging people to help each other ("If you're too tired to chew, pass it on") and the people in the medical tent and the "Freak Out" tent taught us that just doing what needs to be done and helping each other out will get us through a lot of crap.

"Greatest moments" has me puzzled. You obviously just weren't there. By today's standards, the amplification & sound systems were primitive & v. uneven & largely untested esp. with the rain forcing changes in electronics. The music recorded "live" is not what we heard. Despite the 'amphitheater', the sound was dispersed & diminished rapidly with distance. By the 2nd day the weather affected the performance & sound so much. 'Twas amazing but it was a long time & a long way to find something to drink & 'rest rooms'. Most 'melodic' groups suffered from acoustics (Melanie was a remarkable exception),.Alvin Lee & Johnny Winter were amazing, but part of it was just timing & relief in the damp & mud (It shows on the Winter video, but not Ten years After). Santana & Country Joe had the same affect; and others. At least a third of the audience had left by the time Hendrix played.
