That first Alive record might just be my favorite album of all time, maybe tied with VH1. I love the playing from both Paul and Ace, Cold Gin, Watchin you, she, firehouse, etc etc etc. cmon and love me is my favorite kiss riff, it just never gets old to play
@@JasminRobichaux Pas le plus technique c'est certain, brouillon avec une façon de jouer unique...peu de guitaristes possèdent le don d'avoir une signature musicale...on le reconnait instantanément.
I'm 62... bonded to KISS as a teen (you just can't undo that stuff). What I noticed looking at my playlist (all and only Ace era stuff): KISS songs are nearly 100% upbeat, filthy, clever, funny, catchy, filled with interesting variation... all the band members sing well enough to front their own band, they are all competing to be the most interesting part of the song (Peter's beats are often really inventive and stylish... way underrated drummer). Peter & Ace are punks. Paul is Pop. Gene is metal. Great mix! KISS really was a miracle that ruled the music world for a few years.
No doubt one of the most ballsy, aggressive, easily recognizable styles of any guitarist ever. Ace is so fucking awesome! The shredder boys can learn an awful lot about taste, restraint, and playing what fits a song rather than how many notes you can cram into 8 bars.. seriously he is NEVER not on my top 10 list of fave guitar players! I've been a fan since 1977 (I was 10 then lol) and to this day I totally love what he does. Thanks for this awesome video! I love this series so far!
Ace has always been the technical musician. Kiss never sounded the same after he walked away. Even in the darkest era of Kiss, Ace was still killing it with Torpedo Girl, Save Your Love, etc. In my opinion, Ace's solos in Dark Light and Strange Ways are on a whole level.
The KISS Alive album was by far the most influential album for my passion to play both drums and guitar. I could just relate to it at a young age. Now in my 50’s, I still play lead guitar in a band and play drums for fun in my studio.
Brother, thanks so much for this lesson! I unconsciously heard these solos in movies throughout the years, but only until I really started looking into Ace’s playing I found the style I was looking for so long 🎉🎉🎉
It took me a little bit to come around to KISS other than the over the top band of my very early youth. Still not a fan of all things KISS all the time, But Ace is gold. Just enough virtuosity to pull things off, But always with a Punk Rock swagger. Great one David!
I missed this somehow when you dropped it. Glad I found it in time for a Saturday morning coffee. I love incorporating Ace’s ideas into my own playing. Makes me smile. Thank you Mr Brewster.
KISS ALIVE I was so groundbreaking, so sonically different from anything we'd ever heard before. My best friend called me on the phone EARLY Christmas morning because he got the album as a gift and insisted on playing cuts from it over the phone for me! It was mind blowing. Also after KISS originally went their separate ways I saw all the iterations which were ok but lacking - then I saw Ace's solo tour. THAT was the missing link. It was HUGELY apparent that when it came to sound, Ace WAS KISS. When I saw the 90's reunion tour at MSG with Ace and Peter, I literally stood there and cried because I missed that sound, that chemistry so much. It can't be manufactured. Ace is the key.
Hi, I am very happy to discover your Ace Freyley guitar lessons this morning. Really great stuff. I am advancing at an extremely fast rate of speed. Thanks for being here, 🙂 Timothy -
Great video! Walked in my friends house in 75 and Alive was playing. My musical life was changed forever. Alive is such a massive album. Been a guitar freak ever since.
God bless ya for paying homage to the only "SUPER HERO ROCK-N-ROLL BAND" once more my friend! And what an awesome opener! The solo to She is a must learn for the true ROCK-N-ROLL Musician! I've been a subscriber from the start and there is no channel quite like yours on UA-cam! You have successfully carved out a niche that no one else can seem to grasp. Anyway, continued success with your channel and thanks again for another KISS episode! God bless and take care...
Nice job explaining to folks what Ace is working from!!! The songs its related to and going through all of his techniques used!!! Giving lessons now 38 years!!!! Ace was the reason I picked up a guitar!!!! I still have a couple of pictures of him in my lesson studio today!!!! Its my tribute to him!!!!! That early KISS stuff was sure fun to play from the first album through Dynasty......I like Dynasty but don't care for I was made for loving you!!!!!!! Nice job was entertained the whole program!!!!!
Les Pauls were NOT COOL in 1974. Ace sported a Les Paul long before most people had any idea how great of a guitar they were. Long live the Les Paul guitar! Thanx Ace.
These instructional videos are fantastic and honor Ace for his unique style and talent. Despite his various influences he's always had a style all his own. Great job here, mate. Keep up the fine work 👌
Ace's leads and riffs are uniquely his. There are far more technically gifted or faster shredders, but his "tricks" or vocabulary are instantly identifiable and distinct. We all recognize the Les Paul coupled with a Marshall. Many guys can play rings around Ace, but only Ace can create great riffs, memorable leads, and great songs.
Love the video man....Ace INSPIRED me (as well as MANY MANY OTHERS lol) to learn to play the guitar.....He gave KISS their sound IMO....with his leads, riffs, great techniques,etc.... He has killer Vibrato...Feeling....and Ummmphhhh to his playing styles and sounds !!!! Listen to Black Diamond,Deuce,Strutter, and ofcourse SHOCK ME...and you'll definetly hear it....ACE FREHLEY also autographed my guitar one year in a local Mall in the RECORD BAR store.....He'd left ISS..and was promoting Frehley's Comet . He was so just DOWN TO EARTH,FUNNY AS HELL,and all round COOL as the other side of Da pillow ya'll...LMAO LMAO THANK YOU ACE FREHLEY....The ORIGINAL Space Ace.....for ALL THE GREAT TUNES,SOUNDS,SOLOS,RIFFS,AND SMOKIN ASS GUITARS FLYING AROUND ---AND FOR ALL THE AMAZING LAUGHS ALONG THE WAY TOO !!!!!!! KEEP EM SMOKIN N A ROCKIN BRO !!!!Lookin 4ward 2 ur next solo album as well......HAVE A BLAST RECORDING IT Man.....and deliver us a KICKIN ALBUM AGAIN !!! Peace......Get ur technique on w/ Ace and enjoy it all. !!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, THANK YOU! I've been a KISS fan since I was 11 and Ace has always been my favorite Lead player (tight with Slash). I picked up the Guitar rather late 'cause Drums were just easier for me at 11 BUT, I never been able to understand what makes his playin' SO unique and recognizable until THIS video. Cheers from Venezuela and again, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS: Ya know I'm gonna practice that Am Blues Scale plus that G# tomorrow like CRAZY! xD
I'm impressed with how you present the material. That, and your demeanor is one of the best I've seen... And I've been around. Keep up the good work. (yes, I was a Kiss fan)
The first album I owned, as a kid, is hanging right above the stormtrooper pencilcup! 8D Saw them @ Monsters of Rock in my hometown, Tilburg (The Netherlands) in 1988. Happy to have seen them, but it was a different band. Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick, both great players, but with their own style. Anyway, great video. Ace made me want to buy a guitar untill I was 20. And now I'm watching an Ace soloing instruction video.
People like to rag on Kiss, especially when it comes to flash over substance but it doesn't compute. Once you get past the makeup and theatrics there has to be a solid foundation and that's the music. They wrote some really good songs and that's what is important, the foundation.
After Paranoid, The Originals was the first album I had as a kid. I think Ace's playing blended perfectly with the rest of the band. I saw him live and I really enjoyed his solo section. Man that was loud!
Firehouse was my first Ace solo. He's muting the string with his pick and plucking with the 2nd finger. Muted pluck then downstroke. Try it and you'll get the Ace funky chicken in no time.
Hey man, very cool lesson. Been a Kiss fan since they came out on that Paul Lynde Halloween special back around 76'ish ( Don't quote the year ahah! ), the breakdown in She is spot on too as well as your other observations 👍
Very cool. Nice, smooth playing. You have a great vibrato. Nice tone also. I wanted to mention what someone else stated, which is that Ace admitted to stealing that lick on "She" from the Doors at a spoken/playing event at he Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. He also pulled a cord which sent a Les Paul falling flat on its face! Total Ace! Ha!
Alive was the first album I ever bought. I was 12. And while I eventually succumbed to the guitar bug, I was always first and foremost a Gene Simmons fan. I had a decoupage photo of the Demon my younger brother made in art class hanging over my bed. Ace was innovative in many ways, including some of the licks that made other more “reputable” players famous - I’m thinking of the fretboard tapping that Eddie Van Halen turned into his signature lick. Ed was even in talks at one point to play with KISS when Ace went off the rails.
Kiss was the first band that was my band and not my older brothers.[ I had many] There I was with my kent sunburst L.P. guitar. Didn't understand overdrive or any of that but I figured out most of that first live album. I wanted to be that spaceman so bad. And I still do. Ace had fire and a basic tone that complimented the songs really well. I always defend Kiss. I Tell people to listen to Alive next to Rockin the Fillmore or Frampton comes Alive. The songs and performance are solid. I'm starting to rant again. Thanks Dave. Bye for now. Oh yeah kudos to Eddie Kramer too!
Man, about Ace's collection.....I was SO bummed that Ace chopped up his legendary '73 Tobacco Les Paul and painted it black. But Ace is one of guys that doesn't give AF, lol.
He is a great guitarist. Shock Me is just a cool song. They lost something when he left/was fired (whatever happened). I totally dig unison bends...👍 There was a funny thing I heard in an interview where he bends the low E string slowly and releases it. He said Gene called it "elephant bends". It's funny, but I could picture an elephant making that noise....😂
100% agree. Ace’s solo sounds perfectly fit the band. He has that Jimmy Page swagger in his leads. The other guitarists they had just didn’t add to it what he did.
The reason I originally wanted a guitar and the reason for the longest time, the only shape of an electric guitar was a Les Paul! And why it was the first guitar I bought when I could afford to get a new guitar. Dude! You did the tennis racket guitar too?? LOL
McCready says he stole the She solo on Alive .Saw them in 76 and 77 when I was 15 and 16 yrs old. kinda peaced out on them during Destroyer, but Ive been listening to Alive this week and its still legit
You know your shit! All these haters on kiss have no idea how much Ace influenced many bands that they love today. The list goes on and on from 80s metal , Grunge till current bands today. So all these people don’t know shit ! Bruce Kulick is my favorite technique player. He is underrated .
I really hope you can do a video on this because I think a lot of people would like to know. Can you figure out what Ace frehley is playing on old live solos when he goes down the scale of the gutair you will know what I'm talking about he plays it at 1:22 of the Tokyo 1977 live solo, the sound is beautiful and I want to play it soo bad I just can't figure out what he's playing lol I'd really hope you could figure it out and make a video teaching us

Me too.

I'm 55 yo...from Québec...this is the man who started my journey into playing guitar.. this guy is my hero and for me,a living legend.

Exactly why Ace has influenced more players than Malmstem
Ace has always been the technical musician. Kiss never sounded the same after he walked away. Even in the darkest era of Kiss, Ace was still killing it with Torpedo Girl, Save Your Love, etc. In my opinion, Ace's solos in Dark Light and Strange Ways are on a whole level.
Ace has had way more style than technical ability. Bruce or vinnie would be more technical players.
Love Ace! I played Ace in the Destroyer Tribute band. Helped formulate my style. You can hear him in Jerry Cantrall too.
It's not KISS without Ace. Saw them twice 77 and 79 Madison Square Garden. Good times...

Hey, Dave. How about featuring some Peter Maunu, from his days with Jean Luc Ponty? It was worth an ask. 😊
Great summary of techniques. Frank Hannon from Tesla loves doing those 17:24 unisons.

P loving awesome pentatonic.
