It has always amazed me how different Sawyer is to all other reviewers, actually how different he is to other anime watchers. In a way he is more mysterious, ive never seen hin collab with others 🤔. And he hasnt said much about his life after finishing school..
Well, he does have PH.D so his level of research, reviewing contents and looking deep into things should not be a surprise. His critical thinking skills obviously way higher than most anime /manga reviewers out there.

Ace's words to Luffy as he was dying hit differently. We all thought Ace meant he believed Luffy would become Pirate King but he was referring to this dream we don't know about.
Chapter 999's title: "the sake I brewed to drink with you" Chapter 1000's title: "Strawhat Luffy" The titles of the chapter are supposed to be combined just like the color spread "the sake I brewed to drink with you Strawhat Luffy" is I believe the message Oden left to Luffy, some say the "sake" is referring to Kaidou and how Oden told him to get stronger for Luffy to fight and defeat him
Lmaoo no. The Sake I Brewed To Drink With You is a reference to a centuries old piece of japanese literature which is a poetic way of talking about the grief one feels bout death

@@Vinlan.D While i agree that the titles can obviously be up for interpretation, I always believe it to be important to understand the background behind it for a more accurate interpretation. With those examples that you just gave I can agree with them. They still fit in line with the theme of the original literature of loss and longing. I just don't agree with how the op used it in this instance cuz the ch. 999 title is taken from something that's sorrowful/mourning not one of hope.
Which is why One Piece is overrated. 1000 chapters in and we still know as little information as we did in chapter 1. Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul all ended less than 10 years and here we have Oda 23 years later still not providing us any information on anything.

My theory is that both Luffy and Roger's dream is to become "Someone who never dies." A person dies when a person is forgotten, according to Dr. Hililuk, so if they said their dream was becoming someone who never dies, it sounds like a joke, but what they mean is they want to become someone who is never forgotten. After all, Roger's last words to rayleigh were "I'm not gonna die, brother."
I like the "I'm going to become everyone's friend" because that makes sense for people to laugh and say it's dumb. Escaping death doesnt seem like a big deal in the one piece world, especially when some races live a really long time.
I started the manga when one piece anime in Mexico wouldn't go pass the introduction of Mihawk. That was back in the early 2000s, it's been a long journey but one piece it's one of those things that keeps me going. It was also one piece that made possible to meet new friends in college and Funny enough I would find about your channel right when Sabo was revealed to be alive back in dressrosa. I wanted to see other people reactions to that moment. It's been a journey with you man hope you keep going with one-piece content and of course your life endeavors.
The One Piece being connected to world piece or bringing everyone together would also give more context to Whitebeard's last words to Teach ("You're not the one Teach. The man Roger was waiting for, at the very least, it's not you Teach") cause Teach's goal is literally the opposite.

Allot of people are sleeping on this. Luffy declared some words to Sabo & Ace which Oda skipped and didn't show, Ace & Sabo were stunned to hear it. Shanks said to Rayleigh that he met a child who said _the exact same words as our captain_ and didn't specify what. Roger said to Oden and Whitebeard those exact same words and declaration (which wer also skipped), which had them both shook even though Whitebeard was never interested in Final Island / One Piece. And we know that Roger never set out to be Pirate King, rather that's a name that the world gave him and literally his thoughts of it to hear it were "well, ngl it sounds cool so i'll take it." And now we see, on the grand 1000th chapter titled "Strawhat Luffy" reffering to those *same exact words* in the flashback and again ODA CONSISTENTLY SKIPPING THEM to just show the reaction to those words. People are sleeping on this and thinking it's nothing important, like "i'll be the freest man in the world" or "i'll find One Piece" but the consistent subliminal messaging in this type of writing is showing us we actually _don't have a single clue what Roger's, and by Extention Luffy's, real goal is.

Every time those words are skipped he leads us to believe it's just that Luffy wants to be the pirate king, or something else that's planted in the scene. Like when Luffy tells Rayleigh he just wants to be free; a lot of people assume that was what he told Shanks as well, but it was something else.
Roger and Luffy: I'll become the man to bring the world together in ONE PIECE! Luffy and Roger helped to inspire those around them to accomplish their dreams. Roger laughing at the One Piece is due to it being simply Joyboy's journey and failed dream. It was too soon for Roger because the world wasn't in a state to fulfill his and Joyboy's dream. This is why Rayleigh said that Luffy might find a different meaning... The world will be in a state to champion their dream. Also, Toki's prophecy was already fulfilled. "The nine shadows would bring the dawn to Wano." Luffy is the dawn that the Scabbards brought.
Not only Luffy but the young generation of pirates meaning the five guys up there being lead by Luffy that is. Like in Odens book described. And the One Piece isn't a dream or the journey or sthm like that but an object, its confirmed by Oda

This is so funny and true, because Zoro fans keep talking about ashura as a part of his arsenal even though he's only used it once. They don't get that Oda does that all the time; give characters a one-off attack to add some extra hype at the end of a battle to never be seen again.

The problem with the Yonko is that they think they are invulnerable. No real threats. It's how Blackbeard was able to do what he did. Now Luffy, Law, Kid, Killer & Zoro doing the same. Like Blackbeard, they always knew they would have to take on the Yonkos. Kaido & Big Mom underestimated they ambitions & skill to rise to the top.

I had the same thought. This fits Luffy since he has the ability to create friendships in everyone he meets as suggested by Mihawk. This could also been the case with Roger.

I think the reason why Kaido has so much shock in his expression, is because the last person to really hit him like that was most likely Gol D. Roger during God Valley when the Rocks pirates fell. Kaido is about to relive the God Valley incident again.

I remember luffy saying that being king of the pirate ment being the freest man in the world. So his his dream has to do with freedom because he’s always been ready to help those who asked for it.

The first time i ever heard of one piece was when a local block buster was closing down, everything was on sale. On the way home from work my mom decides to stop by and buy some games. One was One Piece Unlimited Adventure for the wii. I didnt play that game until like a year later. I didnt watch anime yet and it looked weird to me as a kid x3 but one day i dug it out of my closet and i decided to google it and i ended up watching the first episode on my old ass, fat ass dinosaur computer x3 and i binged the whole thing during winter break, catching up to punk hazard at the time(this was 8 years ago). COMPLETELY TOOK OVER MY LIFE, cured my fucking depression, i had something to look forward and even if now i am content about life, and i am happy, One Piece is still at the center pf it, being a prominent thing in my life ON A DAILY BASIS. discussing it, discussing characters, writing about it, drawing it, reading about it, enjoying the community! I started watching Sawyer in the 7th grade for his Naruto reviews (I’m 21 now) but I didn’t start one piece until my junior year of highschool. I couldn’t start it because it seemed too long and uninteresting to me, but after watching one review of one piece by Sawyer, I checked out the series and I fell in love with the show. When I was going through personal and internal issues the only thing that I looked forward to were new chapters, episodes, and Sawyer’s reviews of One Piece. "I'm going to be free!" I thought the whole reason Luffy wanted to be a pirate was to be free as pirates are free from living under the law and are free from responsibilities. As the story progresses Luffy's commitment to his Nakama and friends makes him take on responsibility, but always Luffy is free in deciding to contribute; in this way, Luffy has progressed and grown.
I caught up on One Piece around the time that Marine Ford was happening. I don’t recall the specific chapter, but I was getting frustrated waiting for each chapter to come out. So I looked to the internet for more discussions and I stumbled across this channel. It’s been a good ride so far Sawyer, to think it’s been roughly 10 years... damn...
I distinctly remember spending the night at my grandmas with my cousins. My older cousins convinced my twin brother and I to stay up and watch Toonami. I saw Naruto, DBZ, and One piece back to back. Ever since that day I have been hooked chapter 1,000 really hit home for me as it gave me the same excitement as the first time I watched one piece.

Thank you for sharing your experience at the end of the video, I am sure a lot of people here have the same sort of sentiments in regards to One Piece, for me it was a really tough time and believe it or not, One Piece may have saved my life. 10 years on and still here with the 1000th chapter. When I was about 10, my parents got divorced, and I alternated weeks with my parents. I discovered one piece when I was going through old games and found One Piece pirate’s carnival for the GameCube. I played that game with my parents and brother as a kid, so it was nostalgic playing it again once my parents were divorced. At the time, I was new to anime, having seen FMA, SAO, and Death Note, the gateway anime. My brother mentioned the game was based on an anime. I started watching one piece throughout middle school. It helped me get through a rough time in my life, and I’ve been reading weekly for about six years now. This series means so much to me, as I’m sure it does for many others. God bless Oda.

Lovely story at the end Sawyer. My personal start with One Piece was the 4kids dub when I was 8, I watched it for a couple years and then completely fell away cos it stopped airing. Then when I was around 18/19 I found the show again and fell in love, I caught up with the series and got into the manga properly week to week. It's undeniably a big part of my life I look forward to every week and even in between just seeing other people's reactions/theories/memes/stories about the story. 1000 chapters in and a few more years left. We all have to embrace every single moment because we're not getting it back.
My journey only began in 2018. Had very much the same feelings as those of most people who dont want to get into it have. But I had been missing having a weekly series to enjoy with bleach and naruto ending so when I saw it was approaching chapter 900 with a lot of hype because of my subscription feed thanks to guys like you and King i finally made the decision to try and catch up for the 900th. ~6 weeks later i was caught up, watching all your old reviews as i went along and loved it all! 1000 chapters in and i can't believe that we Still don't know Luffy's real Objective and dream... Pirate King & One Piece are just synonymous to him with that goal, the same goal Roger had which surprised even Whitebeard who was never interested in being King or One Piece in the first place.
Makes no sense. That is literally his real objective. In fact if you want to get technical a lot of his objectives are to save other characters since he is the hero of the story.

I think much like with John Lennon answering the question "What do you want to be when you grow up" with "Happy" Roger and Luffy both simply said "Free" which was dismissed and laughed at because it wasn't something tangible, which could also explain why Ace on the surface wished to become a great pirate as opposed to wanting to find meaning.
I think Luffy started valuing freedom more after realizing Sabo wasn't happy and wanted freedom more than he wanted to stay with Ace and Luffy. At the point of kid Luffy saying what he'll become he was inspired by Shanks to become a great pirate, but did not have as big a desire to be free yet.
Luffy/Roger: “I want to become the worlds most free man, free to roam any sea! The sky even! One day, I will have a crew capable to even travel to the moon!.” Whitebeard/Sabo: wtf hahaha are you a child?
The ending story was great. I’ve been watching you since I was like 11 or 12. I’m 22 now and I think this is my first comment I’ve ever made. Thank you for all you do. It feels like you been a part of my world for so long.
Man I was like 13 when I started one piece, I'm almost 28 now... I miss the old days and those beautiful forms and mangastream websites where I met so many theories and nerds. Those early 2010s were the peak of my life... they hype for one piece was the only thing I had in my mind.
You probably never read this, but Sawyer, I honestly have to tell you - I love your videos. The quality, all the details you mention including explanations (& the end of this video where you talk about the bus stop- the incredible message behind it) show me that you are by far one of the best UA-camrs I have ever seen. Keep up your great work and stay the way you are!
Final bit of dialogue was very inspiring and really adds perspective to what may seem like mundane moments we all experience. Life really isn't a zero sum game, it's a journey and the most important stuff happens along the way. I can only hope to not reject new pathways to explore when life presents an opportunity disguised as a bus stop conversation on a cold day haha. I sure won't forget that story, at the very least, thanks for sharing with us.

I already knew the anime from when I was a kid but I thought it was something too silly for me to get into as a uni student. Been following it weekly ever since. Nice review Sawyer! I didn't understand why Oda chose this approach to the chapter, but you really hit the nail on the head. It makes sense if it's about introducing new readers to the story. I've been following the series since 2003 and reaching chapter 1000 (Thank you God!) is a milestone in itself, but the hype created around it kinda left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed. It was a good chapter, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't live up to some moments we already had. It's like you said, One Piece is all about the journey and allowing Oda to suprise us when we least expect it. It's kind of like him to not do what everybody expects, plus he said himslef he never expected the series to last this long. When you were telling your bus stop story, I felt that. How many times do we avoid popular series on account of the hype or postpone something we know we might like because we think its to good to watch/read now, i'll leave it for a special time and we kick ourselves in the ass for not doing it sooner. That's my only advice to other fans of anything: for God's sake do it now not later. Sometimes there is a good reason something is popular. Happy New Year my guy!

Ace's words to Luffy as he was dying hit differently. We all thought Ace meant he believed Luffy would become Pirate King but he was referring to this dream we don't know about.
When Luffy hit Kaido with that Red Roc it made me feel like Ace had spiritually kept his promise to come back and beat Kaido.

With those examples that you just gave I can agree with them. They still fit in line with the theme of the original literature of loss and longing. I just don't agree with how the op used it in this instance cuz the ch. 999 title is taken from something that's sorrowful/mourning not one of hope.

I started the manga when one piece anime in Mexico wouldn't go pass the introduction of Mihawk. That was back in the early 2000s, it's been a long journey but one piece it's one of those things that keeps me going. It was also one piece that made possible to meet new friends in college and Funny enough I would find about your channel right when Sabo was revealed to be alive back in dressrosa. I wanted to see other people reactions to that moment. It's been a journey with you man hope you keep going with one-piece content and of course your life endeavors.

Luffy declared some words to Sabo & Ace which Oda skipped and didn't show, Ace & Sabo were stunned to hear it.
Shanks said to Rayleigh that he met a child who said _the exact same words as our captain_ and didn't specify what.
Roger said to Oden and Whitebeard those exact same words and declaration (which wer also skipped), which had them both shook even though Whitebeard was never interested in Final Island / One Piece.
And we know that Roger never set out to be Pirate King, rather that's a name that the world gave him and literally his thoughts of it to hear it were "well, ngl it sounds cool so i'll take it."
And now we see, on the grand 1000th chapter titled "Strawhat Luffy" reffering to those *same exact words* in the flashback and again ODA CONSISTENTLY SKIPPING THEM to just show the reaction to those words.
People are sleeping on this and thinking it's nothing important, like "i'll be the freest man in the world" or "i'll find One Piece" but the consistent subliminal messaging in this type of writing is showing us we actually _don't have a single clue what Roger's, and by Extention Luffy's, real goal is.

Every time those words are skipped he leads us to believe it's just that Luffy wants to be the pirate king, or something else that's planted in the scene. Luffy and Roger helped to inspire those around them to accomplish their dreams. Roger laughing at the One Piece is due to it being simply Joyboy's journey and failed dream. It was too soon for Roger because the world wasn't in a state to fulfill his and Joyboy's dream. This is why Rayleigh said that Luffy might find a different meaning... The world will be in a state to champion their dream.
Also, Toki's prophecy was already fulfilled. "The nine shadows would bring the dawn to Wano." Luffy is the dawn that the Scabbards brought.
Not only Luffy but the young generation of pirates meaning the five guys up there being lead by Luffy that is. Like in Odens book described.

The problem with the Yonko is that they think they are invulnerable. No real threats. It's how Blackbeard was able to do what he did. Now Luffy, Law, Kid, Killer & Zoro doing the same. Like Blackbeard, they always knew they would have to take on the Yonkos. Kaido & Big Mom underestimated they ambitions & skill to rise to the top.
I just hope that some of the supernovas becomes as tall as the other yonkos if not, close to it.

The first time i ever heard of one piece was when a local block buster was closing down, everything was on sale. On the way home from work my mom decides to stop by and buy some games. One was One Piece Unlimited Adventure for the wii. I didnt play that game until like a year later. I didnt watch anime yet and it looked weird to me as a kid x3 but one day i dug it out of my closet and i decided to google it and i ended up watching the first episode on my old ass, fat ass dinosaur computer x3 and i binged the whole thing during winter break, catching up to punk hazard at the time(this was 8 years ago). COMPLETELY TOOK OVER MY LIFE, cured my fucking depression, i had something to look forward and even if now i am content about life, and i am happy, One Piece is still at the center pf it, being a prominent thing in my life ON A DAILY BASIS. discussing it, discussing characters, writing about it, drawing it, reading about it, enjoying the community! I started watching Sawyer in the 7th grade for his Naruto reviews (I’m 21 now) but I didn’t start one piece until my junior year of highschool. I couldn’t start it because it seemed too long and uninteresting to me, but after watching one review of one piece by Sawyer, I checked out the series and I fell in love with the show. When I was going through personal and internal issues the only thing that I looked forward to were new chapters, episodes, and Sawyer’s reviews of One Piece. I just want to say thank you Sawyer for introducing me to a series that has impacted my life on such a grand scale. Much love and happy new year!

"I'm going to be free!" I thought the whole reason Luffy wanted to be a pirate was to be free as pirates are free from living under the law and are free from responsibilities. As the story progresses Luffy's commitment to his Nakama and friends makes him take on responsibility, but always Luffy is free in deciding to contribute; in this way, Luffy has progressed and grown.
When this arc is over and wano is free I bet right after it’s over the sun is gonna rise over the horizon. Aka the coming of the Dawn

I caught up on One Piece around the time that Marine Ford was happening. I don’t recall the specific chapter, but I was getting frustrated waiting for each chapter to come out. So I looked to the internet for more discussions and I stumbled across this channel. It’s been a good ride so far Sawyer, to think it’s been roughly 10 years... damn...
I distinctly remember spending the night at my grandmas with my cousins. My older cousins convinced my twin brother and I to stay up and watch Toonami. I saw Naruto, DBZ, and One piece back to back. Ever since that day I have been hooked chapter 1,000 really hit home for me as it gave me the same excitement as the first time I watched one piece.

When I was about 10, my parents got divorced, and I alternated weeks with my parents. I discovered one piece when I was going through old games and found One Piece pirate’s carnival for the GameCube. I played that game with my parents and brother as a kid, so it was nostalgic playing it again once my parents were divorced. At the time, I was new to anime, having seen FMA, SAO, and Death Note, the gateway anime. My brother mentioned the game was based on an anime. I started watching one piece throughout middle school. It helped me get through a rough time in my life, and I’ve been reading weekly for about six years now. This series means so much to me, as I’m sure it does for many others. God bless Oda.

Lovely story at the end Sawyer. My personal start with One Piece was the 4kids dub when I was 8, I watched it for a couple years and then completely fell away cos it stopped airing. Then when I was around 18/19 I found the show again and fell in love, I caught up with the series and got into the manga properly week to week. It's undeniably a big part of my life I look forward to every week and even in between just seeing other people's reactions/theories/memes/stories about the story. 1000 chapters in and a few more years left. We all have to embrace every single moment because we're not getting it back.
Imagine if Oda decides, with Roger and Luffy, to throw a Pulp Fiction wallet/Dr Rota at us, in that we never know what they actually said...

My journey only began in 2018. Had very much the same feelings as those of most people who dont want to get into it have. But I had been missing having a weekly series to enjoy with bleach and naruto ending so when I saw it was approaching chapter 900 with a lot of hype because of my subscription feed thanks to guys like you and King i finally made the decision to try and catch up for the 900th. ~6 weeks later i was caught up, watching all your old reviews as i went along and loved it all! Pirate King & One Piece are just synonymous to him with that goal, the same goal Roger had which surprised even Whitebeard who was never interested in being King or One Piece in the first place.
Makes no sense. That is literally his real objective. In fact if you want to get technical a lot of his objectives are to save other characters since he is the hero of the story.

Sawyer I first started watching you a long time ago when you were doing Naruto chapter reviews, I remember I would always watch your review right after I read the chapter. When Naruto finished I missed it and needed something to replace my weekly manga read, that's when I noticed you also did weekly reviews for One Piece! One Piece is now my favourite thing and it's all thanks too you!
Hearing your origin story to One Piece makes me love your channel and all you offer to the One Piece community. I got into One Piece to find more things in common with my boyfriend and now I'm pretty sure I love it more than him now.

I think much like with John Lennon answering the question "What do you want to be when you grow up" with "Happy" Roger and Luffy both simply said "Free" which was dismissed and laughed at because it wasn't something tangible, which could also explain why Ace on the surface wished to become a great pirate as opposed to wanting to find meaning.
I think Luffy started valuing freedom more after realizing Sabo wasn't happy and wanted freedom more than he wanted to stay with Ace and Luffy. At the point of kid Luffy saying what he'll become he was inspired by Shanks to become a great pirate, but did not have as big a desire to be free yet.

The ending story was great. I’ve been watching you since I was like 11 or 12. I’m 22 now and I think this is my first comment I’ve ever made. Thank you for all you do. It feels like you been a part of my world for so long.
Man I was like 13 when I started one piece, I'm almost 28 now... I miss the old days and those beautiful forms and mangastream websites where I met so many theories and nerds. Those early 2010s were the peak of my life... they hype for one piece was the only thing I had in my mind.

You probably never read this, but Sawyer, I honestly have to tell you - I love your videos. The quality, all the details you mention including explanations (& the end of this video where you talk about the bus stop- the incredible message behind it) show me that you are by far one of the best UA-camrs I have ever seen. Keep up your great work and stay the way you are!
Final bit of dialogue was very inspiring and really adds perspective to what may seem like mundane moments we all experience. Life really isn't a zero sum game, it's a journey and the most important stuff happens along the way. I can only hope to not reject new pathways to explore when life presents an opportunity disguised as a bus stop conversation on a cold day haha. I sure won't forget that story, at the very least, thanks for sharing with us.

I kept seeing the thumbnails of your OP reviews next to the Naruto ones that I watched, and one day I decided to give One Piece a try. I already knew the anime from when I was a kid but I thought it was something too silly for me to get into as a uni student. Been following it weekly ever since. Happy new year, hoping that we'll all get to where we need to be :)

My weekly experience of one piece is never complete with out your reviews... best way I can describe it is like consuming a devil fruit (reading the chapter), might have a few clues about it's powers (spoilers), and I go on a long journey to learn more about it (watching as much content on the chapter as I can)... Then at last I stumble upon or actively search for your review, and BOOM AWAKENING!!!

You know Sawyer bringing up the moon thing. I feel theory about the "D" is a actually a half Moon and not the letter actually being true.
Notice how Zorro and Killer are placed in that lineup. On the right side of their Captains, the right hand men the Vice Captains.

Nice review Sawyer! I didn't understand why Oda chose this approach to the chapter, but you really hit the nail on the head. It makes sense if it's about introducing new readers to the story. I've been following the series since 2003 and reaching chapter 1000 (Thank you God!) is a milestone in itself, but the hype created around it kinda left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed. It was a good chapter, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't live up to some moments we already had. It's like you said, One Piece is all about the journey and allowing Oda to suprise us when we least expect it. It's kind of like him to not do what everybody expects, plus he said himslef he never expected the series to last this long.
When you were telling your bus stop story, I felt that. How many times do we avoid popular series on account of the hype or postpone something we know we might like because we think its to good to watch/read now, i'll leave it for a special time and we kick ourselves in the ass for not doing it sooner. That's my only advice to other fans of anything: for God's sake do it now not later. Sometimes there is a good reason something is popular. Happy New Year my guy!
