CYPRUS BASS FISHING | KANNAVIOU DAM | LURE FISHING FOR BASS

  • Welcome to Cyprus! 🇨🇾
    Join me in this video as I do some freshwater fishing for largemouth bass at Kannaviou Dam in Paphos, Cyprus!
    This was the very first time I'd ever done any form of freshwater fishing and my target species was of coarse, bass! I'd start by using a few different lures attached by a standard fluorocarbon leader. As the session progressed, I decided to attach a Drop Shot rig, using a 4/0 circle hook and a white worm from Mr. Fish Jersey. This method would allow me to fish a lure just off the bottom and in amongst the ruff stuff.
    After roaming round the Dam and trying many different areas, I soon found myself connected to a fish. Would it be the species I was after? Check out the video to see how this session went. 🎣

    Fantastic catch. Way to grind it out. Bass fishing can be tough. Just a kind tip, the chances of survival go way up if the bass' skin is not damaged. It's super easy to lip them at the water line instead of dragging them up the bank. Good luck on the next venture.

      Yeah they’d be worth a go for sure. I hardly had any suitable lures with me. Next time I'll be better equipped 🎣

    Nice fish....is not good though to drag the fish on the ground like this. Freshwater fish are more sensitive then sea water fish.

      Cheers and yeah, that's a fair comment. I was standing very high up and couldn’t really get down to the water easily. I now know for next time though 👍🏼

    Great video and kudos to your patience! I guess that comes from sea fishing. I'm a river person myself and can generally target fish getting quick results! Getting into the swing now on the reservoirs here in Cyprus using the spinner.!

    Καλωσήρθατε! Αlways inspiring. This dropshot lure...wow! But what if works better with a living bait;I m too amateur too mix spinning and casting but i have the feeling that it works.

      @FISHINGWITHCAL  Рік тому

      Yeah I'm sure a live bait would work too. I wouldn’t know what live bait you would use, would have to get some local knowledge.

    Is there anywhere you can fish for pickerel some places call the walleye? A great fighting fish and they are delicious in the right circumstances.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  Рік тому

      I don’t think they get walleye over there, not in the dam I was at anyway. Would be worth seeing if they’re in any of the other dams if I go back though 👍🏼

      Somehow some pike ended up in Kouris dam. Which is strange as the fisheries department never officially introduced them in Cyprus....

    Cal it is great to see you out trying freshwater. I’ve been fishing freshwater for 35 years. One tip for walking on the loose gravel banks is to dig your heels in first. Pay attention to water columns and weedy areas. Bass love them. You may have damaged the scales on that fish dragging it up the bank like that, but your learning. If you have any questions I’m more then happy to do my best to answer them. Look for rock cliffs and honestly dig yourself some ground worms. You will catch many different species. Love your enthusiasm for something new. 👍🇨🇦

      Thanks for the tips Timothy, I appreciate it. Yeah in hindsight I should’ve got down to the waters edge when landing that fish. I was stood in a bit of a stupid position. I know for next time though 👍🏼 I hadn’t even thought about baitfishing while I was there. I wanted to start with lures as at least I know a few things about that style of fishing. I'd love to do some more freshwater fishing for a variety of species though so maybe one day I'll plan a proper trip and get some different species ticked off 🎣 It was good fun though!

    Kannaviou's crystal clear waters makes it the perfect dam for jerkbaits / minnows. I much prefer them hard lures for this dam. When you come again try Arminou dam too, that's also in Paphos district, but, with a lot lighter setup, 10lbs max mainline and 0.30mm leader and 4inch soft plastics to catch far more fish. Evretou dam has monster bass, but it is a lot harder dam. I generally avoid fishing Evretou.
    Best month is always pre-spawning but close to spawn, that's beginning of April, you just can't go wrong if you fish there beginning of April. By the end of April and begging of May you enter the post-spawn season that sometimes gives but most of the times you'll blank. End of May is awesome for top water and by June it's regular fishing again.
    The only restriction during spawning, March and April, is that you cannot keep any bass, but you can catch and release them with no worries.
    Edit: something more to note on spawning is that spawning in Evretou usually is in March, not April, then a couple of weeks later come Kannaviou and later Arminou. So, if for some reason you're here March, you may have to fish Evretou as it begins to give first. Am in Limassol, so, I have other options. Start with Yermasoyia dam for Mrch and when it's done move to Kouris dam for April.

      Nice one, thanks for the info! I was there in end of march/start of april. It was the first time I'd done any freshwater fishing so was all new to me. I'd love to go back and hit some bass on topwater lures at the right time. I fished Evretou a few days later and caught one bass but that was it. Saw a bit more action there though. I appreciate the info, thanks mate 👍🏼

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL I had a blast during those days in Yermasoyia dam, multiple 3-4 pounders on jerkbaits everyday. Next time go hard on hard-lures during pre-spawn. You'll get a ton of reaction bites rather than actual feeding bites on soft plastics. Use suspending jerkbaits 100 to 120mm max 140mm, suspending, you need to pause half a second to a second after 2 or 3 twitches/jerks, also take some lipless cranks with you for power fishing, and a couple of the heaviest spinnerbaits you can find especially for when it's windy.

      @@TropicalGardeningCyprus I’ll definitely bare that in mind mate. I wish I’d have known that before I went haha. I didn’t take many freshwater lures with me at all and while I was there I really regretted it. All my bass fishing is saltwater related and I have hundreds of lures for every occasion. With very little freshwater knowledge, I wasn’t completely prepared for when I was in Cyprus. That’s all good info to know so thanks very much, I appreciate it! Good luck on your future bass sessions. Cheers 🎣

      @FISHINGWITHCAL  Рік тому

      I really don’t know a lot about fly fishing at all but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to target largemouth bass on the fly.

    • @Frankthesurf
      @Frankthesurf 7 місяців тому +1

      I've been out here with a fly rod but in many places it's difficult to cast as the banks are very steep with lots of bushes etc. Did manage one on the fly but eventuall turned to spinning as got fed up catching branches!

    I’m on the end of the video. And have one more little tip. Target the warmest place of the lake and realy hammer that place with slow tactics like the dropshot and texas rig
