Building AD Spend History To Get Rolex? These Watches Are A PASS And Have Poor Value Retention

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- It’s no secret that 95% of luxury watches will depreciate the moment you walk out of the AD and to trade them onto a secondary dealer will lose you money but that doesn’t deter people buying out of genuine desire or for more tactical reasons...
The biggest problem with our hobby is being able to get the watch that we actually want. With brands like Rolex we all know that’s not a straightforward gig, so many of us desperate, addicted souls fall into the ruse of buying watches we don’t want in the hope that we can build history with the AD to one day get that dream phone call.
It’s sad and demoralising but this practice goes on because it works and the journey is sometimes worth the end result. That said then how worth it is it really? Casting our net across all brands, these are the watches that flipping to a dealer you would lose a fortune on, this is the battle of the biggest losers.

One of the best watch channels... No spin, no smoke and mirrors. Just brutal truth and unbiased honesty. Wish more out there were like this. Great content and keep it up
Thanks for your kind feedback, please let us know if there are any topics you would like us to cover in future, cheers
Vinny is providing valuable content and made a very valid point that I want to reiterate from a collector’s point of view, not as an investor. First, IMHO, the AD model is dead except for a wealthy few who have huge annual spend with an AD. A trusted grey market dealer will charge a premium over retail without the hassle of buying watches and jewelery you don’t want! Second, there are many watches that collectors want to wear and will lose money if they buy from the AD. BUT, if you like the watch and want to wear it, buy a Breitling, Panerai etc. on the grey market at huge discounts! You only lose money buying from an AD! Lastly, don’t lose your dignity buying from the AD. Become an enlightened watch buyer and you can smile every time you walk out of the AD’s store. Always remember that markets/prices are cyclical and the pendulum will swing back as Rolex demand will cool down.
Yes very good points. Many of these watches can be found in mint condition or even unworn on the secondary market so for the pure collector buyer that’s the place to go to save money. Given the bad rep the secondary market gets of inflating prices of brands such as Rolex it must be respected for its existence in making many of these (non Rolex) watches more affordable
Can we do the same video with a practical view on what actually happens, which is that you can buy all these watches mentioned in the video for at least 20% discount? Also with this kind of relationship you aim for more than just 1 batman. Perhaps at least 2-3 popular rolex like sub, batman and a milgauss or explorer
What actually happens is that most people don’t negotiate nowadays because they don’t know how to…
Excellent advice.
Thanks for watching!
ROLEX is in leauge WITH THE flippers!
Cellini is the only Rolex I like. The rest are dull, boring and come on godawful bracelets
Absolutely agree. The moon phase on is gorgeous. I got to try it on once.
Keep up the good work.
A totally different approach that deserves support. 👍🏻
Cheers! Very kind of you
Loving the vids Vinny, a refreshing take from what we’re all used to. Keep it going 😀
More to come! Thanks for your feedback 😁
Great Video mate. How you only have 2.5k Subs when the garish trusted dealers favourite wide boy has 70k is beyond me
Haha thanks
He deserves many more but word is getting around!!
Best on YT from germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
Danke! Very kind of you
Fresh!👊
Forgot to mention Tag Heuer. Almost any Tag depreciates 40% the moment you walk out the door, with the exception of the Monaco which seems to still hold 80% of it's retail value.
Mid Jan 23 I walked into a Rolex AD for the first time. AD had me try on all the models they had, told her I really liked the Sub. I texted her the next day to thank her. 3 Weeks later I get a text asking me if I still wanted a Sub. 4 hours after that I had purchased my First Rolex , Submariner Date. No purchase history. Zero relationship other than our 1 meeting. That AD made a customer for life. When picking up the Sub she asked what other models I was interested in . I said the Sub was so gorgeous I could not think of anything else. Stopping by this weekend, should I mention a Daytona would be a awesome?
That’s how it should be! There are some really helpful AD’s for sure and you’re right, with service like that you will go back for other things. And why not, just be honest with what you want and why you want it, good luck
Lucky bastard 🤣🤣
Had a similar experience in early 2021 when I bought my Rolex SD43. Actually when into my AD to speak to people, zero previous relationship and less than 2 months later it was on my wrist. Boom.
Most of these “losers” can be had for a discount so not as much of a loss as you stated.
Good point, if all were as savvy as you to ask. Negotiation is a dying art and many most just pay list nowadays
Good job Mate. Learning a lot. Breitling is making a comeback but you were right about that two tone 4 year calendar watch, it's just a gimmick. But if someone has a source for some of these watches from a reputable dealer for 25-30% off then it's game. You lose the "boutique experience" but the price difference is so big that it's worth it. Hublot needs to be 40% off so I can sell one for Nico Leonard. :))))))) ... keep up the great work, thanks.
Thanks a lot! And couldn’t agree more about Breitling, I’m in love with the Top Time and 36mm Chronomat, they have nailed their new releases. Big thing for me though is their reliability. I’ve heard from countless clients of Breitlings bought from new that develop problems or have to go back for recall
@@vinnyfrancis , I have a great relationship with the local boutique here in Orlando and they are aware of the situation. But if you get a chronograph, you need to get one with the B01 ( or its variants) movement That is in house. The 4 year calendar is ETA. Also, allegedly, their own 3 hand movement is under development. Currently it’s either ETA or Tudor. Personally I own a Super Chronomat with the B01, never had issues.
Ah very interesting, well the B01 is very solid considering Tudor approve of it and use it themselves in the BB chrono, They are going places as a brand for sure
@@vinnyfrancis , you do know that there are more price increases coming across the board, right? IWC and Omega in April and personally I don’t think that Rolex is finished with theirs either. This year.
Possibly given that inflation in the UK will still be high 6 months from now. I really think Rolex should hold back on anymore this year to maintain that waiting list allure of their pieces which underpins their luxury status
"... end up licking their rear end which isn't that much of an enjoyable experience" ROFL..... I wish these AD customers would learn and realize this.
Haha very true!
Love the cap in the background Vinny😎
Enjoyed the vid👍🏽
Glad you enjoyed! And thanks, been rocking that since the first London watch show! Need the AP one😉
Yup, just buy the Rolex on the secondary market, if that's what you really want.
Buy watches not bec of retention value... it's an expense. Buy it because you love it.
Love your videos! No bs, just straight talk.
Glad you enjoy them mate thanks for your support
Brah when you talk about grand seiko vs bell/ross or hublot is night and day. Common give the Japanese more credit than those 2 at least
Fantastic finishing but i personally cannot warn to their spring drive movements knowing that they are not 100% mechanical at the price point they’re offered at. No problem at all with quartz watches under £2k but a £5k spring drive i cannot get excited about
Hey Vinny; I still love my Cellini Moonphase, but it's always somewhat embarrassing to see the numbers and the general dislike of this watch.
Hopefully it's more to do with the numbers, because as a watch, I think it's beautiful.
Anyway, whilst I didn't buy it to flex spend with the AD, and there will be some more along the way (incl. the 228238 Onyx / Baguette, which should be next), the final grail is the YG Meteorite Daytona so it will all be worth it in the end 😬
Keep the videos coming and all success to you
Hi Ant! I have to say I’m an admirer of all moonphase pieces, it’s my favourite complication and yes this is a beautiful watch, no doubt. Particularly the meteorite used on the moonphase wheel. Classy attention to detail. Rolex just need to put this on an Oysterflex and suddenly watch the demand grow…
Hey Vinny, if a grey market dealer is paying well under the list does that mean you sell under list to end user?
Hi a typical dealer margin would be 8-15% on top of these prices
There’s a sucker born everyday but happy to notice customers are more resistant to this kind of arrangements since the market tanked last year.
Yes I never approve of the practice of buying to build up a spend history but it does go on and is very prevalent
Was looking forward to hearing about Cartier Santos in Large.
That’s one of the better ones in all honesty! Yes it’s a ‘Pass’ but along with the staple Omega Seamasters, speedy’s and Tudor BB’s that a watch we can sell quite easily and thus would pay a decent price for.
This might be the best video on watch investing ever……long live the grey market!
Wow, thanks! Very kind of you
So what you're saying is, if I want a dress watch, I can get much better value for money than most by buying a Cellini on the secondary market.
Curious to know how much you'd re-sell the Breitling super chronomat 44 for (after buying it at trade for ~£6400). Call me crazy, but at that kinda price I'd be very tempted myself!
it’s a batgirl if it is on the jubilee
DROP DROP DROP 👎👎👎 IF YOU KNOW YOU KNOW LOL VINNY KNOWS THAT MAD GUY
Hahaha I must say his videos are funny and watching them is a guilty pleasure!
It’s the ‘magic intro’ that’s gets me every time😂
Learned a lot.
Dear Vinny. Patek 5226G - calatrava. Pass or buy at RRP ?
Honest.
Some of these are terrible to flip, but great to buy from secondary dealers.
I am beginning to see grey market prices (at least in the Far East where I reside) for Rolex is steadily picking up in the last 2 weeks. Perhaps this has to do with the Chinese tourists started flocking in troves.
Ah very interesting, I made a video about the potential impact of the return of the Chinese to the market and didn’t expect much change but I’ve been wrong before!
I was fortunate to buy several desirable Rolex models before the madness when my Rolex AD supplied them without extras. More recently the pressure has come on to buy stuff I don't want which I've always declined. In the meantime I've purchased several "hearts desire" luxury watches all with discounts (one a whopping 40%). The savings I made bring me to the same conclusion as you about sweetening the AD. It's not worth it unless you can get super hot Rolex models and there aren't so many of those now prices have cooled. I still have a wish list with the AD for several Rolex but the grey market is looking more attractive nowadays. Great video!!
Ah very good! Thanks for watching! It’s worth mentioning that we have clients whom have built a spend history and achieved a Rolex just through buying Wolf accessories they stock! Winders, rolls etc. Also you could buy lower cost watch such as tissot
@@vinnyfrancis I've not given up but I doubt I could swing it on a Tissot. 😉 I feel availability will get better now flipping isn't so attractive.
Hi vinny
I hope you and your family and friends are all keeping well and healthy, and you are having a positive, productive week so far? Another great video. I always love watching and listening to your genuine, honest opinion and advice ? Can you do a video on what's the best watch roles& rubber straps available on the market to buy? Cus there is no watch untuber. Covering this topic Have a great positive weekend kind regards
Hi thanks for your kind feedback and yes of course we can add that to our list, always welcome new video suggestions! Next weeks vid is particularly juicy…
@Watch Investor Vinny thank you. Have a great positive weekend 😊 🙏
