What are your biggest challenges in UA-cam? Recording? Editing? Knowing what to say and staying on topic? Freezing on camera? I've struggled with all of these at various times and they're completely normal :-)
Hi Rob, Could you do a video touching on how YT taxes work? I hear google takes them out, yet channels are considered self-employed. Thanks- Merry Christmas!
I started in May of this year with no expectations of anyone watching. I just film stuff I'm doing and talk about it, mostly because it's like doing stuff with friends. The experience has been great; instead of my usual boring end of year document for work, i made a UA-cam video. The board of directors loved it. The experience I gained this year was immensely helpful for this. Your advice has been great, so thanks for doing what you do.
Looks wonderful where you are! Very inspiring surroundings. Haven't seen snow here in south UK for years.😕 Just constant grey gloomy overcast skies in the main. Or rain. Not nearly as attractive to film in. Think I'll just have to keep watching videos about making videos, like yours! Merry Christmas again, Rob! 🎄🎄
Happy Christmas Rob. Im fortunate that my channel is based around my nomadic life and mindfulness journey. Its purely a calming documentary. Love these walking talking videos, you really have nailed it.
Thank you for being real, honest and authentic I love your videos! Very helpful advice and I’m getting myself ready for the new year to start putting some content out there. 🙏
Success is not easy but just keep going. Sometimes its not your fault, growth just takes time. I'm just coming out of that dreaded slow growth stage and it feels good 😊
You've inspired me (a 61 year old Radio DJ) to go after it fulltime with your videos. Thank you Rob. I say this politely and respectfully but the first video of your I watched, I thought to myself, :if this guy can do it, I can do it. But, I've found that that is the whole point to your channel. From leaving the mistakes in to simply taking a walk. If the info is valuable, it's a UA-cam video. Thank you for all the golden, valuable info. Merry Christmas! Bo
Hey Rob, it's been amazing to see your camera game get better and better on the unscripted videos. I've been struggling with filler words....I don't like it but then again nobody has complained every time I say "uh." My channel went through a growth spurt the past 3 weeks and still nobody has brought it up. I just show up everyday and be me. That seems to be the ticket. Thanks for all your valuable advice and contributions to the creator community.✌
Hi Rob - thanks for your encouragement, I've been binging on your helpful videos! It's been great to learn from you as a new over-50 UA-camr. Question: How do you feel about UA-cam shorts? For some reason, I seem to be getting subscribers this way, more than my longer videos. I'm glad about it, but am puzzled why! 🤣 Do you have a hypothesis?
It really depends on your content... the type of videos you make and what they're about. Some people's content ports well from Shorts to long form, whereas others does not. If you've found a formula that works, it's best to stick with it!!
Appreciate your knowledge Rob, I "officially" started content creation in October myself. I'm a retired military veteran here in Utah & fortunately my family time does coexist with my UA-cam channel content as I make a lot of videos about outdoor adventures and things that people that are considering to visit this beautiful state might want to know about i.e. hiking trails, national parks and hidden gems, best time of year to visit these places all the little details that just Googling may not provide someone all the answers, Happy Holidays! 🤙
Rob I love how you change up your scenery! It is so refreshing. I started my channel a few years ago at 39. It been a journey that I've enjoyed. I love the community that I've found on UA-cam. Keep teaching and encouraging. Your content is appreciated ❤
Hi Rob, thanks for the insight! I actually did a couple test vids and used my natural voice, not my ol airline pilot voice and it was fine. Thanks for your channel and positive attitude! Rob
I love how your channel has reached such success! I’ve been at it a while now, I’m so happy I have the gift of endurance. I’m climbing up that mountain of failures knowing one day I’ll be standing on the top. All the challenges you speak on are true. My 30 day challenges have been the times I tend to gain subs. This video has given me such hope. Thank you for taking the time to film this and share with this awesome community! I love your cat btw! I watch often but don’t comment all the time. I always think big time YT people can feel overwhelmed with comments. You have always answered mine which is so kind.
I try to answer all comments... not because I feel I have to but because I enjoy connecting with those who spend the time to comment! So thank you :-) Best of luck to you this year!! :-)
Thank you! I appreciate it. I feel the same about my comment section. Time is valuable, I always feel honored when people watch and leave comments. Wishing you continues success in 2025.
Thanks Rob, lovely snow! My biggest challenge has been recording myself on camera and then editing and thinking geez, do I really talk like that and look like that! Current challenge is to talk on camera outside, in public, I'm working on it....practice, just keep doing it, just keep taking action, one step at a time. 🙂
I agreed it is fun rewarding and challenging. My greatest challenge is the editing to get my segments in the right place and length. I appreciate your input. Thanks. Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas! And thank you again for your wisdom. It's as if you're answering questions I haven't allowed myself to think about yet (like balancing thinking (worrying??) about UA-cam and spending time with family and friends).
Great simple video. Im wanting to start my own chl as well & have had all of the same thoughts u addressed here. The more videos i watch like yrs the braver im becoming. Beautiful scenery! Looks like a white Christmas for u. Thanks for sharing & inspiring others.
The challenges you mentioned are right on target. Thank you for providing great content this year!🎄 Video editing is getting easier as I go. I needed to learn from scratch, and while not perfected, I'm so much faster than I started.
Thanks for this Rob! I have to not watch the monitized in 4 weeks with 5 videos type content. It gets me bummed and thinking I can’t do it. Your walk and talk videos are wonderful. You are so good at it. I have a DJI Pocket 3 but my stuff just doesn’t come out that great. I need to practice I guess.
Practice will absolutely help! Just practice with short videos less than 5 minutes first... watch it back and then do it again making adjustments with where to place the camera, etc. It'll come! Best of luck with it!!
Thanks for this video. I struggle constructing a sentence alone in a dark room, talking infront of the camera is an absolute nightmare for me. So I've been scripting my cooking videos as Voiceovers but I dont feel like I'm not being my true natural self. I'm gonna take your advice to practice more. Merry Christmas. 🎉
I press record and I can't remember any lines, not even how to start lol I'm getting there though. Putting in the reps is really helping! Yes the slow growth is so painful, I have focused on my scripts, recording and editing instead of getting to frustrated BUT I do refresh a lot too I've also leaned into posting consistently, even if no one is watching, I started 3/week because I needed to get the reps in I was aiming for quantity. In the new year I am doing 1/week aiming more at quality now. Thanks for your inspiration, Merry Christmas Rob
Having the Right Software to go with the Concepts you want to present is By FAR the biggest Challenge for some creative minds. But by Far the overall biggest issue is getting Lost in a Ocean of endless Content which is already comprised to find the bigger channels. Then the BS of everyday those falsely claiming UA-cam is on EASY Mode Myths. Since clearly it is NOT.
Omg , you nailed it. I don't do well with talking at the camera. I have made over 20 videos now. Nobody cares or comments on my first videos. Analytics suck. I don't want to look anymore. Editing is overly time consuming for no return on investment.
Oddly enough, you would think me as an autistic introvert would have a hard time talking to the camera, but, once I get talking on camera I ramble too flipping much so I have to create outlines for myself if I want to talk about a specific subject. I can't shut the F up. It's like I've been waiting for this moment my whole life 😂
Haha I love that!! "You've been waiting for this moment your whole life" :-) Interesting challenge you have! I think for you just try to limit the time you spend on each bullet point. If you go over, have a little fun with it! Like, make fun of your "challenge of know when to shut the F up" lol!! I think that would be a cool and relatable challenge for a lot of people! Might be entertaining to watch too. You might have something there ;-) Best of luck to you!!
Hi Rob. Still a big fan of your channel, and down to earth talking style. How would you schedule to start a UA-cam channel with a full time job and two small kids? I think it’s really hard to find the time and energy.
Recently, the world got in my way. UA-cam was not a priority. Result is that a video has not gone up in a month. Doesn't mean I am quitting. It means I need to get things back on track.
Absolutely! The key to getting views, in its simplest form, is have a thumbnail and title that attract the click... and then a video that fulfills the promise made by the title/thumbnail AND is engaging to watch :-)
My hardest part is talking to the camera or thinking I hit record and it’s not on… I’m using my phone. I don’t mind that a lot because it gives me practice. I also need to make videos to get more female viewers because I’m getting more males than females 75/25. Overall I’m happy with my progress but I’m hoping to get better.
Hey guys! I’m not native English speaker. But I started my channel a month ago in English). And I like it. It’s travel channel. Merry Christmas everyone 😎
I uploaded my 1st video yesterday and I have another I’ll be uploading tonight. I’m locking in my own 30 day challenge. I hope to have a consistent 30 days😅
The language barrier. I'm a French speaker. I think that if you want to monetize your channel, it's much better to do it in English. I speak English well, but do I speak it well enough to make videos? Big question. That's a challenge in addition to the ones you mention. Greetings from Montreal!
Great question! I think you could absolutely be successful in English even if your primary language is French... many people like accents that are different than their own and I truly believe there is an audience waiting to be discovered by anyone willing to put in the effort. Best of luck to you!
It's impossible to answer that question... could be anywhere from $200 per month to $5,000 per month or even much more. It completely depends on the channel owner's business model :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks for the reply. Can you please explain the differences in the business models that create a range of $200 - $5000? Is $200 doing nothing besides posting videos with ads at the start, vs $5000 is having successful affiliate links? Or is there more to it than that?

my biggest challenge is getting monetised at the moment despite getting nearly 4K subs within a couple of months
Freezing on camera. Editing & finding a niche?
