I did my own screen test about a week ago, and....well no...........I didn't have much, if any trouble. Maybe I had been thinking about it more than long enough, and had rehearsed what I was going to say in my head? It was only about 5 minutes, but it started and finished pretty easily. Still don't know why. ☺
It really depends. The start tends to be harder than anything else. Second would be to stay on topic. Just keep trying and allow yourself to 'fail'. It is actually not failing, it is oart of the process.
8:12 - UA-cam has found that the Quality of the audio is WAY more important than the quality of the video. People will be much much more likely to tune out if the audio poor, regardless of what you're talking about. That said, the audio on an iPhone is very sufficient for filming, especially if you are not that far from it. And many apps, like Final Cut Pro have a 'voice isolation' setting which will automatically get rid of echo, background noise, some wind noise, etc. It's a huge improvement in many cases.
I started my channel at 50. It's been 2 years of weekly videos and the growth is slow but steady. Which tells me it's working and will work so I keep pressing, trying to better myself and learn as much as I can during the process. I am having a blast. Thanks for your authenticity and the truths you share.
If you're having a blast, then there's no danger of you quitting... which is the main reason some channels don't succeed :-) Keep on truckin' and best of luck to you!! :-)
This is exactly why I clicked on this video. My new channel is growing now ONLY because of my efforts, determination and passion. It isn’t “easy” but UA-cam is making it easy for quality content makers grow. My videos are getting crazy high impressions, it’s incredible!
I'm a late-diagnosed autistic artist struggling to get started. I've recorded several hours of video of me doing my art but I feel uncertain about the next steps when it comes to the audio. I want to discuss my challenges and share my artistic journey, but speaking live is hard for me, and scripting isn’t appealing. Recording audio separately from the video is ideal, because of the way the filming will be handled, but putting everything together can end up becoming quite a mess. Should I simplify the process? Perhaps put the art to the side and just talk? I'd like to know what suggestions you have for me. Thanks.
That is certainly one way to do it... record yourself just talking (which will be the voiceover), then start creating a video by starting with just that audio. Edit it if you need to to get your story sounding the way you want it. Then, add the video/visuals. At this point you can add any video you think will serve as good B-Roll playing while you are speaking. It good be video of you doing your art, going about your office/studio, or whatever helps tell the story. That way you aren't filming the video and talking at the ame time but doing them separately. A completely fine way to make a video. Best of luck to you!
I’m 51 soon & just revamped my YT to get started…have done a few test videos and I could not help but laugh at how in the start of this video how you mentioned just how hard recording is & how long it took you to start recording this one, it really is. Also, in getting videos ready, etc. I can 💯say the work MUST be put into this, but it’s a great opportunity & way to reach people!
I think pretty much everyone who makes videos for youtube would be able to create a "blooper reel" at the end of all their videos... we might think they look so professional.... but behind the scenes I think everyone goes through something similar :-) All the best to you! Cheers :-)
Thank you for making this video. I started experimenting with making videos around 2 months ago. There is nothing "easy" about being successful on UA-cam lol. I have so much to learn and a lot of hard work to get where I want to go. Thanks again!
I really appreciate you sharing this! Great content, as usual! I completely agree. As you would know, there’s a lot that goes into topic ideation, planning, filming, editing, and everything in between. It’s great that UA-cam welcomes everyone, including regular folks like me, who film on their phones-not just young filmmakers. I think that’s what makes it so accessible! I also heard some people think I put on a different persona in my videos, but honestly, this is just how I talk. As an introvert, I could never pull off a loud, bold act for filming. I genuinely enjoy sharing information that I hope others find helpful; these are my thoughts!
If you can talk to the camera "just how you talk" then that is absolutely the easiest way to do it. Any other way would be acting... and unless you're a really good actor, that's just hard! The easiest person to be is yourself :-) Keep at it and all the best!!
Luck is preparation meeting opportunity. You did get lucky with the algo, but you're also prepared. Definitely take the win and build build build! Now I just hope I can get a little luck here in the future (long form video views lol).
Thank you for the video! It's spot on about easy mode. Although I do believe that UA-cam has changed how it recommends creators (not videos) and it is easier now than two years ago. BUT it's still hard mode on keeping the algorithm fed. After research I took it as EASY mode in getting noticed, not as easy but easier is what I've found.
Wow! The quality with your phone looka great and the sound is wonderful too. I have to get more comfy talking without stumbling :) and videos like yours are so encouraging! Thank you for your take on this.
Great video Rob. It's a concern that other YT channels are "promoting" Easy Mode. I agree it can and does, give people the wrong mindset. If people just think...."well it's easy, I'll knock this out of the park" then they are likely to be disappointed. Very few UA-camrs knock it outta the park in the first few months.
I so relate to this (bloopers, restarts). But it's slowly helping me acclimate to all thats required to improve. When we can give ourselves some grace, and accept our "human-ness," the anxiety lessens a bit... especially, when we see others in the same boat as us.. and even more so when successful UA-camrs experience the same. So, thank you, Rob. P.S. I completed my second YT video last night and uploaded it... *correctly* (not vertical this time!) 😂 😊
Great video and reminder to all. If we spend a little time writing down the intro of the video exactly how we want to say and practice it a few times, it would be a much better option than just trying on the spot and getting frustrated. Because it affects the rest of the video. We can free-roll the rest of the video as long as we know what we are talking about but it doesn't have to be perfect. The intro, thumbnail, and title are the things that we should spend a lot of time on.
@@RobtheMaritimer I bet bloopers happen throughout the recording. I never run out of them but I've never used them. I may give it a try next year in my videos.
I was camera shy for a very long time, then one day i just hit record, upload it raw, the only editing i do is the subtitle....but when the video is over 20 mins long like my recen't costco trip, i just left the subtitle raw, lol! Due to my hearing and speech impairment, the AI can not picked up the words i am trying to say.
Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful for someone like me, who have been contemplating if i should start a UA-cam channel. You did good explaining everything, especially for beginners.
Great advice as always. I've been creating videos for 6 weeks now and use exactly what you showed. I film on my Samsung Galaxy S24, with a DJI mini mic either on a hand held selfie stick or a tripod mount. I've amassed just over 1300 subscribers, and have 3400 watch hours. You don't need lots of expensive equipment, and like you say, keep it simple, be yourself, and enjoy what you're doing.
Great video. I'm 57 and started from scratch 16 months ago and just passed 6500 subs. I'm making about 1 video a week, and yes it's just hard work and you have to keep at it, to feed the algorithm 😉 I agree that a phone is more than enough but I would get a mic from the start. You can get a DJI Mini with both mic and receiver for less than $100 and that will connect straight to your phone and give you much better audio. A mic is definitely the most important investment, the rest can wait.
That's great growth! And I do like the sound of great audio so I'd recommend upgrading to a decent mic early on too... but it's not at all "necessary" for those who just want to start :-)
Hey Rob, Thank you for another great video. I use my laptop to record my videos. I don't have a mic. Of course, my videos could be more high-quality, but I do them anyway. I have a legacy channel that is leaving me for my children. When I do my cooking videos, I pause the video and occasionally click the stop button. When I start a video, I go for it. Of the 155 videos I've done, I've restarted perhaps 5 of them. I like clicking "start" and moving on.
Thank you for debunking this particular myth. There is a lot of hype surrounding it and it just leads to disappointment when people mistakenly think they are going to go viral.
Now *this* is the proper info people need :) No fluff, just practical hard facts :) I started making proper vids on my channel a year ago, a couple of months before turning 50, and have gone from 10 to 660 subs in that time using my phone and a DIY keylight and a cheap-ish mic for slightly better audio. Even more interesting is the fact I’m over halfway with watchtime hours as well, with views growing exponentially as I publish vids. Not crazy growth but slow and steady with a couple of outlier videos that have boosted and performed well above what the sub count would imply. And that’s probably the most important lesson learned: not every video has to be a «banger», every video contributes, but aiming for «something special» now and then, hitting that «perfect storm» in terms of topic relevance, timing and «trend» a couple of times help speed things up, even though it doesn’t have to be crazy viral :) And this year of making vids has been the most fun I’ve had in years, which is a major bonus :)
I started my channel because the Economic Ninja put out a challenge for older people like me. It's flat lined. No views, no nothing. Got any suggestions?
I have lots of suggestions but I don't know enough about your particular situation, niche, how often you post, your skillset, etc. My advice would be to try and figure out why your videos aren't getting views, whether your thumbnails or working or not, etc. I have a lot of videos on how to do these things... and there are a lot of other channels that do as well. Time to roll up the sleeves and get to work! Best of luck to you... and have fun with it! :-)
Tiny tip that I just started implementing in my videos. If I have something funny or interesting to say or show, I will put it at the very beginning of my video right before my intro, with text at the bottom saying "coming up later" or something like that. For example, those bloopers at the end are phenomenal and you could have put some (not all!) of the clips at the beginning of the video to grab the viewer with "coming up later" text or something. Everyone loves to laugh, and we all love to see someone being real because it's relatable (and cats, of course 😁) Like, that clip with your cat walking away is what initially caught my attention because it played automatically on my home page. I'm very simple, I see cat, I click 😂 Basically that, but a few seconds longer
Thank you for showing that btw because damn that is relatable AF.. and yes, I ABSOLUTELY do that too even though my videos are vlog style, therefore less scripted and more relaxed. They may seem like we're just "going with the flow' but sometimes scenes need to be set up. Again. And again. And again. And again.
Thanks for the tip... great advice! I've tinkered with that before... "Coming Up..."... but haven't done it as often as maybe I should :-) Thanks for watching and all the best to you :-)
Thanks 👍 for this informative video Rob. A phone definitely is all you need to produce videos whether it is an iPhone or Android. Hopefully Rob is having a great Wednesday. Love 🥰 the video and love ❤Rob.
A quick question.. What app do you use to record your audio? I sometimes have a hard time switching between audio sources. How long did it take you from start to finish for this video?
I record my audio directly into my computer and into Adobe Audition. You can use any recorder app really... I just like (and am used to) the processing tools in Audition so that's why I use it. I then import that audio track (after I process it) into Camtasia for syncing with my video. This video took me about 35 minutes of recording time (15 minutes of false starts, then the 20 minute "final take"). Then it took me probably 4 hours to import my files, edit the video and upload it to youtube.
Good stuff! Sure, it’s “Easy Mode” if you just turn on some kind of camera and just talk about…anything (but nothing in particular). Where it gets hard is talking about something interesting or something of value and finding that thing to talk about. For some people this is “easy” and for others, not so much. I found UA-cam to be really, really hard, mostly because of finding something of value to say. It’s getting easier but it’s far from “easy”.
I think most people don't realize how capable their phones are! The iPhone 12 is more than capable... it's fantastic! Have fun with it and all the best!
I struggle with the one take...I end up loosing my train of thought. Lately, I have been doing one take of each bullet point and then string them together.
Uploading a video to "UA-cam" is like giving a CD to my cousin! I gave a CD of my singing to my cousin to listen to in his van and said to him "I hope you like it" and he replied "Don't worry if I don't like it I'll waz it outta window". I asked him a year later if he'd wazzed it outta window and he replied "No I haven't listened to it yet, its still knocking about van somewhere"!🤣😂🤨
UA-cam isn't easy. In fact, it can be a grind. But, I'm an example of a small channel (5029 subscribers) that can be successful without going viral. I started UA-cam when I was over 60. And I make decent side hustle money. I'm retired and UA-cam definitely beats "Welcome to Wal-Mart" as a part time job.
I will tell you something, I have, for a while now, discovered that YT is sending ads to content creators with well under 1000 subs (not monetised) and ONLY YT is gaining from the revenue.
Yes you're correct in that UA-cam places ads even on channels that are not monetized. What those channel owners get in return is free video hosting for as many videos as they want ;-) Also keep in mind that the ad revenue UA-cam gets from monetized channels FAR EXCEEDS whatever revenue they generate from placing ads on non-monetized channels whose videos don't get many views. Just putting things into perspective! Cheers :-)
Haha yes!! I'm usually pretty good at keep the swear words inside my head... occasionally they may pop out lol! I love the sound of the shotgun mic. Placement is also huge. If I held my DJI wireless mic closer to my mouth and not under my chin, that would've sounded better too... but it's usually clipped to my collar so I was trying to simulate that. Maybe I should do a more comprehensive mic-test video that includes different distances from my mouth too?
I've got action cam, phone, wireless mic, i wrote my notes for about 20 videos... but i'm afraid of talking too much and a bit shame of speaking alone with a cam (i use to respect environment sound...) yeah yeah i need a psicologhist... lol... THANKS ROB! Greetings from Argentina (i'm 58... )
@@RobtheMaritimer I like your outro with all of your attempts. I am also trying to do videos without too much editing and the mistakes make it seem more real
Best thing to do is to not chase views.... but just work on making your videos better each time you make another one. Eventually you'll get better and that will show in your analytics as more views and subscribers :-)
No I don't... but i can tell you that you can apply for the YPP with 500 subs and 3000 watch hours and when accepted you'll be able to set up memberships, super thanks and super chats. If you do live streams those could help bring in some revenue :-)
I’m just having fun I’m definitely not expecting anything and if it starts to feel like a job forget it. I’m just trying to laugh a little bit. I’d be amazed if someone was actually interested in my videos 😂
Rob - I enjoy your videos, and your encouragement. I did my first YT roughly six months ago. I don't have a channel, but I do YTs for a non-profit, and they post them for me. I really didn't want to start a channel, and try to game an algothim, but I enjoy making content. A big part of the NP's mission is educational content. I've volunteered there for over 20 years as a docent and generating YTs add another dimension. I use camtasia, started learning audacity to improve sound, and rely (largely) on US National Archives for B-roll content. I do shoot still's using my IPhone. Did one short, but I don't think they'll publish it - it was fun anyway! Since the 1st two - I've done several more that are queue'd up. You are absolutey right - you do get better as you try. And it does get easier (even for old guys). BTW - I'm well over 70. And, It's very important to have fun doin this!
That's awesome that you're bringing your expertise to a non-profit through your videos - and it's inspiring to hear you're over 70! Best of luck to you! :-)
This whole "youtube is one easy mode" nonsense honestly pisses me off 😂. I've spent over 2 years building a channel that generates multiple 6 figures into my business annually, and let me promise you... ALL OF IT has been difficult, at every fiber of my being lol. Rewarding? Yes. Easy? Puhhhhhleaseeee 😂😂😂
Way to go, Rob ✨️🫂✨️ Thanks for sharing 👍 I really enjoyed it and liked it 👌 Yes, the bloopers was epic too and I have been there so many times and it made me laugh 😂 cause i know exactly that feeling too 😂 😹

Thank you so much for the kind words! Hope you're having a great day too :-)
A quick question..
The bloopers 😂. Happens to me all the time during voice over
The struggle is real! LOL
@ It is!😄😄
Excellent job with your one take. Keep going!
Haha thank you :-)
Your lighting is so good
Thank you :-)
G'day Rob. youtube easy mode videos all over the place. This is a great video 📹 it's true with no BS.
I'm glad you found the video helpful and agree with what I said! Cheers :-)
That's so right! And yes, it definitely gets easier the more you practice and try :-) All the best!
Always love it when Peanut gets in on the video.
Some days she cooperates... most days she doesn't lol!
Great advice.thank you for sharing.
Thank you :-)
Wow. I have had my phone for several years and did not realize it has 4k video! Would not have noticed had I not watched this. I have an iPhone 12.
I think most people don't realize how capable their phones are! The iPhone 12 is more than capable... it's fantastic! Have fun with it and all the best!
I struggle with the one take...I end up loosing my train of thought. Lately, I have been doing one take of each bullet point and then string them together.
That's a great idea! Honestly, whatever works best for you is the way to go. Best of luck with it! :-)
Haha!
There is no such thing as easy mode. Everything takes hard work and dedication
Hard work and dedication will take you a long way! All the best :-)
That's great! And inspiring :-) Continued success to you!
Thank you for these tips! Im gonna try these out and see if it can work for me….
Best of luck with it!
I’m officially off work for two weeks so I’m determined to get my first video out this weekend, definitely not a one take lol
Sounds great!! Best of luck with it!!
@ I’d love to use your idea for the bloopers I’m sure I’ll have plenty to work with lol
Cheers :-)
Thanks Rob 👍
My pleasure!
Ha Ha I saw how much you wanted to swear in those bloopers! The shotgun definitely makes a difference on the audio!
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Very true coach❤
Thanks for watching :-)
I've got action cam, phone, wireless mic, i wrote my notes for about 20 videos... but i'm afraid of talking too much and a bit shame of speaking alone with a cam (i use to respect environment sound...) yeah yeah i need a psicologhist... lol... THANKS ROB! Greetings from Argentina (i'm 58... )
You're already doing so much, you're way ahead of the curve! Just remember it takes time to get comfortable!
Yeah… I way over complicated the process when I started a couple months ago. Unfortunately, only after spending a few monies… I’ve scaled back. 😂
Overcomplicating the process is something a lot of people do... I definitely did that myself! Best of luck going forward! :-)
@ I have no doubt I’ll do it again! 🤣
Yep takes me a few attempts too, apart from my cover songs as they are easy 🙂
I think most creators can relate! :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer I like your outro with all of your attempts. I am also trying to do videos without too much editing and the mistakes make it seem more real
It's easy at all. Bur we are getting there
Good luck to you :-)
im 22 years old and i think you talk very well to the camera,
relax more Rob.
Haha thank you :-) I'll try to relax more ;)
Thank you 😎
You're welcome 😊
You certainly got in a workout from all the standing up after failed one takes lol.
I sure did!! :-)
I’ve been trying to put out content but it seems hard to get views I’m 52 and really into fitness
Best thing to do is to not chase views.... but just work on making your videos better each time you make another one. Eventually you'll get better and that will show in your analytics as more views and subscribers :-)
Do you have a video about what we can do when get over 500 subscribers and 3000 watch hours ??? I am getting close to that point 😊
I think that's a great reason for doing youtube :-)
all new up comming new youtuber let grow
Thanks for watching :-)
Nice video after 20 takes 🤣👍🏾
Haha thank you :-)
Rob - I enjoy your videos, and your encouragement.
I do the same thing! LOL!
☑️☑️🙏🏽
This whole "youtube is one easy mode" nonsense honestly pisses me off 😂. I've spent over 2 years building a channel that generates multiple 6 figures into my business annually, and let me promise you... ALL OF IT has been difficult, at every fiber of my being lol. Rewarding? Yes. Easy? Puhhhhhleaseeee 😂😂😂
Congrats to you on your success! And thanks for sharing :-)
Way to go, Rob ✨️🫂✨️
Thanks for sharing 👍
I really enjoyed it and liked it 👌
Yes, the bloopers was epic too and I have been there so many times and it made me laugh 😂 cause i know exactly that feeling too 😂 😹
Thank you so much for your kind generosity :-) I'm glad you liked the bloopers... I think many of us experience something like that all the time!! Cheers :-)
@RobtheMaritimer always, and always kept saying i would keep them for the end, too 😆 🤣 😂
Keep them coming 👏
Hello Rob, good advice thank you. 💕NonnaGrace 🐓
Thanks for watching! :-)
