    Yes, Scandinavian readathon please! I’m Swedish and I’m in the same situation, I’ve read pretty much exclusively English books for the last 6 or so years, but this year, I’ve read a lot more Scandinavian books and it’s so much fun!

    As someone who mainly reads Scandinavian literature I loved your video so much! ❤
    Some of my favorite authors are Per Petterson, Tore Renberg, Kjell Askildsen and Knausgård.
    But the book I can absolutely recommend to you is:
    Anne Karin Elstad: For dagene er onde
    I think you'd like this one.😊
    And some of my other favorites:
    Ida Hegazi Høyer: Unnskyld
    Per Petterson: Ut og stjæle hester
    Kim Leine: Kalak

    Thanks a lot ! Loved it. I also want to read the Millenium trilogy. I have seen both the Swedish and American series. I love the Swedish one with Roomi Rapace ! I want to read the Ice Palace and the Quicksand and the trilogy from Guillou. His father was French (from my area) I really like when you speak Norwegian beautiful language ! The French pronunciation for Guillou is GeeYOU (g as In gullible not gender) ! And even though he was born and lives in Sweden his Mom was Norwegian ! I hope you keep talking about Scandinavian books in the future.

    I try to read more Scandinavian literature. I found a (very old) list of 100 Swedish classics and try to read at least three a year. So far it's been a really fun project. Also, the readathon sounds like a good idea.

    Thank you for this -- very helpful! Also I appreciated your intro & the Scandinavian/Nordic distinction. I've only read (& loved!) the 3 Larsson books which were huge here in the U.S. I'm not really interested in a readalong (I'm sure I'm in the minority on that) but would love seeing future recs or series on Scandinavian/Nordic lit. We have an ice castle in my town in the winter & it's wonderful so I may read The Ice Palace sooner than later. Thanks again!

    I will literally drop everything for a Readathon please! Haven't read the Millennium trilogy ( yet, or the films : 0 )…..
    We, The Drowned ( that cover !! ) high on my TBR - not all Scandi fiction is noir : ) I'm actually a bit guilty of lazily bunging in the Icelanders with the Scandinavians ( which is REALLY bad for someone from the United Kingdom ) and read lots of their noir. Cannot go wrong with some Mankell tho, and I loved hearing how you have memories of discussing with your grandparents. We have the Martin Beck detective series on the shelves ( Sjowall and Wahloo ) whixch I need to get around to also. Great video Alice... please, a Readathon ; )

    David Lagercrantz took over the Millennium series. Two books have followed (one of which was made into an English-language movie), while the third in this second trilogy is out very soon. I enjoy the series very much, though the initial three are the best.

    This video was such a treat. Haven't read a whole lot of Scandinavian fiction myself...and to that I only read works translated in English (last one being Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Am sure to pick up a lot os good reads from the list mentioned. Stieg Larsson books are on my shelf, though never got around to reading them.
    Jo Nesbø...haven't read anything by him, though I have heard a lot...so due to try soon.
    Also, I want to read the ones by Henning Mankell and Tarjei Vesaas.

    THe not-so-hidden geek in me adores that you specified the distinction between Scandinavian and Nordic. I always have had decent luck with Scandinavian thrillers, so I'm always happy to see recs. I'm afraid I can't say Nordic as while I am constantly on the lookout for works from Finland, I didn't realize there was such a publishing-rep issue involved in the scarcity I find until very recently.
    And you're correct. THe Millennial trilogy was expanded. In fact, the newest installment came out just this or last week according to my goodreads update. Personally, I think with the fourth of the series the new adapter was trying a little too hard to imitate Mr. Larson which led to a rather garbled experience. The fifth still didn't have the bite of the original three, but it seemed like the author was trusting his own voice more. So while it still felt a little less grand, it was more genuine.
    I have a love/hate with Nesbo. I started with his first and ran into a block accessing his books. Now I just haven't had it on a priority list. I like in the first few how he draws on an area or culture, but I also get a prickling suspicion that he has a tendency to fetishize places and people. At the same time, I love how in the HArry Hole series the detective might have some of the same bravado as other sleuths but he's very self aware of his short comings.
    Thank you for all the recs and you time!

    • @TheBookCastle
      @TheBookCastle  5 років тому

      I definitely need to read more books from Finland as well! And maybe I should give the next books in the Millennial series a go, just to see what I think :D

    A german translation (in a beautiful edition) of The Ice Palace has been published a couple of days ago and I was thinking about reading it. Now I will. I love the books by Henning Mankell and I think I read all of them. The Millenium books by Stieg Larsson were also favorites when I read them and I`ve been wanting to reread them for quite some time. I heard a lot about the series by Jan Guillou, but aren`t there 4 books in this series? And Quicksand.... I bought this book when you first talked about it and still haven`t read it. Shame on me!

    • @TheBookCastle
      @TheBookCastle  5 років тому

      Awesome :D As far as I'm aware, there are three books + an extra one that isn't really a part of the series but takes place in the same "world" :) Hope you enjoy Quicksand when you get to it :D

    Yes! Scandi project... I love my Scandi crime and television! Larsson's Trilogy is my FAV of ALL TIME! Lisbeth is my FAV character too! Wallander are great books and so was the TV series. Headhunters the movie is freakin' hilarious and fabulous and stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau long before he was Jamie Lannister. I want to read Quicksand before I watch the Netflix adaptation. I have We The Drowned on my shelf - not gonna lie I knew it was good but I mostly bought it for the cover! LOL

    I have read the Millennium trilogy, and loved it. I keep thinking about aspects of it really frequently, which for me is the hallmark of a great, influential book. But as someone who does not read mystery novels, which the first one starts out as, it was very difficult for me to get into it. But I did find other aspects (no spoilers) that I did enjoy a lot, so it is up there with my favorites.
    My favorite childhood book is also a Scandi book: The Adventures of Nils Holgersson, by Selma Lagerlöf. I still have my original copy, and have been meaning to re-read that for years. There is also a cartoon series of this, which got me into it in the first place, and I remember asking for the book version, and getting it for my birthday.

    My favourite Scandinavian book is actually one I ve read this year : Doctor Glas by Hjalmar Söderberg. I highly recommend it to everyone I know!
