Please remember with the 1963-1989 episodes, all were filmed in a very different style to our current look. Production for the original "who" was nearly all studio based, either at BBC Lime Grove or BBC TV Centre, both locations had vast studio space, so quick turnaround of 25 minute episodes was the norm. Compare that to 2018, where we have special effects, multiple locations, single camera shooting, post production - all of this was not really required in the original "who" era. This is why more content was made from 1963-1989 than the new "who" era. Hope this adds some perspective.

@@JoshSnares I am amazed at the production during the 60s and 70s. I have been to the BBC Television Centre many times, and have been very lucky to have been in most of the studios they used. I remember one BBC historian telling me that Doctor Who probably used all of the then eight main television studios at the centre from the start of Jon Pertwee's era until the end of Sylvester McCoy's era.

I’ve noticed that some popular American shows are having year long gaps. Westworld, S1 Fall 2016, S2 Spring 2018. Star Trek: Discovery, S1 Fall 2017, S2 Winter 2019. Stranger Things, S1 Spring 2016, S2 Fall 2017, S3 Summer 2019. These shows appear to be following about an 18 month production period. Which is what Doctor Who is following lately, S9 Fall 2015, S10 Spring 2017, S11 Fall 2018, S12 Winter 2020. (Not counting the Christmas/New Year specials) . I think at this rate S13 is going to be Fall 2021, and S14 would be Spring 2023...

Although we did S12 in early 2020, and I mean early 2020, it popped up when the year was barely 19 hours old, I think it is likely that Series 13 will be fall 2021. Especially since this COVID-19 thing has delayed all television shows, though we are still getting the special on time, it's already done. I suppose we just figure out whether it will on Christmas or New Year.

    • @computerboy2k

Samuel Barber series 13 won’t be delayed too much, since the writers room is still going on, albeit via video conferencing. S13 is supposed to start filming in September 2020, let’s see how far past the curve this pandemic is by that time...

Blimey, the research that went into this! It ought to be featured in the "WhoTube" section of Doctor Who Magazine. Personally I don't really mind there being no series this year - seeing as Series 11 ran into December and Series 12 could start next January, the gap is only really a few months longer than usual.

I was initially annoyed because back in 2005-2008 there were 14 Doctor Who episodes a year and now there has to be a gap year just to make 10-11.
But it could be because of budget reasons towards the special effects since they really upped their game with those.

When I started watching in the 70's, we'd get a full season and perhaps a few repeats in the summer of 2 or 3 stories at a time. All shown roughly around 6.30pm Monday to Thursday or maybe a weekly slot on 2 nights until a new series came on. We were spoiled back then !!
That's why I love Doctor Who so much because, even when it's not on, I can just grab a DVD off the shelf and watch something that maybe aired originally on that date or week.

I really do hope the year long absence doesn't hurt the program. Interest was obviously there for Series 11, and for that to simply be put on hold just seems baffling to me. Thank Goodness then we still have the magazine, the audios, the animations and the games. I can't even imagine what the wilderness years would have been like, surviving off books, magazines and an American TV movie.

"The Death of Doctor Who". How many times has that been said over the show's 55+ year history? Once in 1966, again in 1969, once more in 1974, possibly in 1980, maybe in 1984, definitely in 1985, maybe in 1986, definitely in 1989, possibly in 1996, twice in 2005, maybe in 2010, possibly 2014, and of course 2017 through 2019.
Yet Doctor Who survives. Doctor Who persists. All you lot saying Doctor Who is dead are wrong. They were wrong 50 years ago, they are wrong now.

but it has been at least sub par for about a decade now so that's not good either... granted I don't think the show is wildly worse than series 3/4 (and series 5 was a lot better than series 2) but for the most part the show just isn't that good and hasn't been for a while.

At one point I didn’t mind the gaps cause it gave me time to play catch-up. I never really bothered with how long it would take. Eventually after almost 6 years I finished every episode and various audios. Personally I don’t mind the gaps so long as they aren’t a couple years like say Jessica Jones for example. What I do mind is the fact that the episode count keeps getting shorter and shorter. Considering the gaps one would think it would mean their trying to make more episodes. I guess not

The one classic season that had 45 minute episodes, season 22, had 13 episodes. That's the same as the average nuwho series. Sure, now it's 10 episodes a season, but the episodes are even longer now! The 60's and 70's were absolutely awesome. No big long gaps as is stated in the video. My earliest memory of Doctor Who is from January 1972, ''Day of the Daleks'', Jon Pertwee, he was my Doctor, then I grew up with Tom Baker, highly regarded as one of the best out of the classic series and I followed all the rest up until 1989, I loved all the classic Doctors. The 70's and 80's were an awesome time to grow up. Great TV, music and films, better than now with all these reality shows and cooking programmes , quite annoying. This is an Idea, to fill the gaps from now and until the next series of Doctor Who I will be watching my Dr Who DVDs from each Doctor, from Hartnell to Capaldi, that will get me through the empty months, starting today, Saturday 5 January, every Saturday. I enjoyed this video very much indeed. I loved series 11 and Jodie so I don't fully understand all the negativity . My son Adam watched with me with interest, he enjoyed it. !

Thank you, Josh, for your excellent research, editing, and presentation. I had been away from Doctor Who for a really long time and picked up interest with Jodie Whittaker coming in. I was thinking maybe the first few episodes that aired were a sort of trial to see if a woman Doctor would be accepted. But looking at the big picture you presented, who's to know? Does anybody really know what's going on, except production at BBC? I've been trying to catch up and watch a lot of UA-cam videos to familiarize myself with the Doctors I missed and the iconic episodes. I really hope they resume with the 13th Doctor. The act of pushing Series 12 back to "Early 2020" is quite an idiotic move in my small opinion. Just as people start to show the slightest of intrigue in the show, it gets put off the air for a whole year. Now, I've heard that it's because Chibnall got more creative freedom from the BBC since they "Didn't have much faith in Series 11" and were surprised it did so well. But I find that to be utter bollix. Series 12 was already in pre-production by this point, so to suddenly rewrite your entire plan without giving anyone a head's up in advance is a dick move in itself; nevermind doing it as the FINALE airs. Overall, it reeks that something has happened behind-the-scenes that no one knows of yet. Whether it be internal conflicts, response to feedback on Series 11, or something else entirely, they've *obviously* had to change their plans because of it, and at very much the wrong moment.
P.S.: It would've been spectacular if you let Doctor In Distress play in the background for the rest of the video.

A very interesting video - I think we'll see Doctor Who returning to our screens in January 2020. Tony Hall, General Director of the BBC stated that the show would return in 'very early 2020' and given how the rumour is that they're starting filming this month - which assuming it follows a similar filming schedule to Series 11 - would mean an October finish for filming, it would be stupid to not anything with those new episodes until mid April of the next year.
Also based on the success of recent shows such as Luther and Sherlock with their NYD launches; I think we'll see Series 12 launch on January 1st 2020 followed by the rest of the series from the following Sunday onwards. NuWho has never tried out the Winter slot before for a series - and with the Sunday slot potentially meaning Six Nations won't get in the way, this could be Doctor Who's golden ticket to a slot undisturbed by Strictly, Britain's Got Talent, The X Factor or I'm A Celeb; at a time where more people are inside rather then being out in the cold and dark, most notably, Series 11 was knocked down significantly in the charts (by 7 places usually) thanks to I'm A Celeb.
Perhaps the potential January - March slot is exactly what the Doctor ordered? 👀

  • @Darren79

    Great video, Josh:)
The way I look at this new gap is that the series is being delayed about 4 months. I can't recall if it's been clarified but I'm sure they suggested the next series will start 2020 - that's usually dead space in the schedules so the show will work really well there. The BBC looks to me like it's declining, their must-see content is dribbling away so I'm sure they want to spread out the more popular shows so that the rating winners are not confined to say just the autumn.
I'm indifferent to the gap as Series 11 wasn't the most dynamic and involving of series - just something watchable for most weeks.
There are probably behind the scenes issues that we're not privy to (it's a TV show - that will always be the case) but I still expect that bolstering the new year with a hit show is looming heavily in the decision.

Josh, would you rather change the broadcasting change eg no cancellation crisis, a fifth paul McGann film, S27 etc or change missing episode history like Marco Polo and fury from the deep were recovered in 2007. If there were little or no missing episodes do you think your channel would be more popular with a 'this is how the episodes were recovered' or 'Doctor Who the missing 97?'

My honest opinion is that there was much more going on behind the scenes than we were let to know.
Ratings for the Capaldi era were really, really bad; I think that's why the show moved to sundays, why we only got 10 episodes and why they lost the christmas slot. Of course they'll say it was all a creative decision by Chibnall, it would be really bad publicity otherwise, but I'm pretty sure it was all an executive decision by the BBC due to the bad raitings of series 10 and the last few christmas specials.
Now, I'm also pretty sure there was a big possibility that the show would get cancelled if series 11 wasn't successful. Of course they won't publicly say that, but the finale to series 11 kinda felt like the finale of Sherlock series 4, as in "we won't leave anything open because we don't know if we'll be coming back". That's why I think series 12 got delayed: because the BBC wouldn't confirm a series 12 or allow them to go into production until series 11 aired; I believe that if the ratings for series 11 were like Capaldi era ratings, they would have cancelled it right there, no second chances.
A lot of people are saying that Chibnall killed the show or whatever, and of course Chibnall is taking the blame, he is the new guy, but I'm pretty sure most of the bad decisions were made due to Moffat's declining viewership. The fact is, the show was already dying, Chibnall might or might not save it, but he won't be the one responsible for killing it.

Diego Edelman 2015 was also when I started noticing a considerable lack of merchandise in stores, in comparison to the Tennant/Smith eras. I have mixed feelings about Chibnall. I think he had an excellent opportunity to boost merchandise sales, but just from his writing I don't think he had that in mind.

    • @V-grandraccoon
      @V-grandraccoon 5 років тому

Diego Edelman I think it’s important to remember that whole series 10 didn’t have as high of ratings as previous series of the show it was still doing well in the grand scheme of things. TV in general has a declining viewership and doctor who is included in that. It’s also important to note that the online views weren’t counted and neither were any ratings from BBC America (if I remember correctly series 10 and the proceeding and succeeding Christmas specials all did very well ratings wise and broke some BBC America records but I could be misremembering) also Chibnall apparently had a 5 year plan for Doctor who do I doubt that the BBC were ever really going to cancel it.

    • @V-grandraccoon
      @V-grandraccoon 5 років тому

The Thirteenth Doctor being in the US gives me a slightly different perspective but here’s what I saw. From 2011-2013 there was an increase in merchandise like books or sonic screwdrivers. 2014 was when it really started and 3.75 inch figures were all over bookstores and drugstores (strangely a drugstore in a different state was where I finally found a Capaldi figure after months of searching and only finding Tennant and Smith) then in 2015 the 5” modern who line was over here (at least the figures that came in boxes. The blister card rerelease figures I only ever saw in comic shops) but unfortunately Underground Toys is no longer a thing so there is no longer any US distribution. In 2016 and 2017 you could still find some remnants but now other that dvds and books in 2018 I’ve only seen a “Canadian convention exclusive” stylized Amy Pond “Rock Candy” figure from funko in a mass retail chain bookstore (so not Canadian or convention exclusive) they’ve only been there for a few weeks but I’m pretty sure none of them have sold (then again no other characters are available and who really wants a stylized figure of a character that hasn’t been on the show for 6 years). Now the US doctor who license has been given to a company named se7en20 and they have made a sonic screwdriver (which I’m yet to see in a store not that I’d actually buy one or anything) and are supposedly making a 5 inch Jodie figure. Here in the US 2015 wasn’t the year of decline but the peak year. If underground toys was never bought out then I think character would still be making as many figures as they did in 2015 (Capaldi, Clara, the curator, 12th doctor’s tardis, missy, night of the doctor 8th doctor) since they would have a larger customer base.

Eighteen months is too long to wait,
Bring back the doctor don't hesitate.
It was a cold wet night in November
    Twenty-two years ago,
There was a police boc in a junkyard
We didn't know where it would go,
An old man took two teachers
    Into time and space,
    It started off a legend
    That no other could replace.
    Doctor in distress,
    Let's all answer his S.O.S.,
    Doctor in distress,
Bring him back now, we won't take less.
    There were evil metal creatures
    Who tried to exterminate,
    Inside each of their casings
Was a bubbling lump of hate,
    We met cybernetic humans
    With no feelings at all,
    Warriors of the ice
Who stood over seven feet tall.
Bring him back now we won't take less,
If we stop his travels he'll be in a mess,
The galaxy will fall to eveil once more,
With nightmarish monsters fighting a war.
We've learned to accept six doctors
    With companions at their side,
When they were faced with danger
    They didn't run and hide,
There was a Brigadier and a Master
    And a canine computer,
    Each screaming girl just hoped
That a Yeti wouldn't shoot her.
    Doctor in distress,
    Let's all answer his S.O.S.,
    Doctor in distress,
Bring him back now, we won't take less.

Great video's. Loving the missing episode's ones.
I am concerned that with such bad reviews/reception for series 11, that they could lose quite a few people if they leave another series quite so long. Regardless of what anyone's thoughts on series 11 are. They showed with Resolution, that they can do better and I really think they should be trying to capitalise on that. But the BBC think they know best. We shall see what happens.
I think if Chibnal can't do better, the BBC will only have 2 choices. Sack Chibnal (if he doesn't actually leave as he has stated he is doing) and Jodie (who by the way I don't dislike as a Doctor) and put someone they deem more competent in charge or worse case, axe the show. I'm concerned that they will take the second option.
I was unfortunately concerned when Chibnal took over from Moffat that his writing and choices for the show would not be well received. I haven't been amazed by any of his prior work, it was always middle of the road for me at best. So this current backlash hasn't surprised me in the slightest. I had wished I would be surprised, but Alas....
I did predict at the announcement of Chibnal and Jodie that Jodie would bare the brunt of his bad decisions if he couldn't up the anti, which I think is happening at present. So many reviews saying she's such a bad actor, etc, etc. Is it that or she hasn't been given the opportunity to shine. Only time will tell I guess.

I'm disappointed that they're taking a year off, but then I'd rather them take their time and make something great rather than rushing something out. I think that was a big problem with Moffat. A lot of his ideas weren't fully thought out, I think he could have done better if he had more time to work on things. I think the BBC have made a mistake though in not doing something to tide the fans over, like maybe releasing a few animated missing episodes through the year to fill the gap.

lots of series now don't air every year. Think of Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders, Broadchurch. Compared with those series we have been spoilt with Doctor Who. And if it returns at the beginning of the year in january then really it is only a few months different from if it aired in the autumn so I don't know what the fuss is all about. If the series was going to air in the autumn of 2020 then that would be a long gap but I think it will air at the beginning of 2020. Of course on a Sunday then you will not have Strictly Come Dancing afterwards but Call the Midwife. you have essentially have 3 dramas in a row on BBC1 7.00 Doctor Who 8.00 Call the Midwives 9.00 Another drama possibly a literary adaptation as the BBC seem to do a lot of them lately.

    4th - 10th THE Doctor
    5th - 1th Loveable, charming but a little silly.
6th - 12th My favorite but wasted potential.
(I REALLY want capaldi on Big finish. Evlyne smythe is so well played that I keep confusing her name with the actress. )
7th- 13th: Likeable but uncertain future.
8th- 14th? PLEASE . Brainy, hot but with a dash of charming. Long hair with a mystic air but still someone you would bring home to meet your parents even on his worst day. Making the Timelord truly timeless. I don't care what gender.
Writing is hard, I get it but I would rather wait a few years for a golden age of Doctor who rather then lets say... Erase a few lines/pages of script because MAtt Lucas asked to be Nardole. I love him but there are some scenes where it feels added just to give him something to do.
In season 11 they decided to go old school rpg text style. Everyone is frozen in time like a play, slowly awiting their cue.
I think SOME of us (each to their own opinions. ) may need a break and would welcome the year hiatus.

Also at the end kind of sounds like you're making excuses for them, it'll be the longest gap in the history of the show (because 1985-6 & 1989-2005 don't count since the show was ya kno... Cancelled), and it's definitely not a coincidence, but I'm sure you're aware already of the plethora of embarrassing potential behind the scenes reasons.
Cool video though nice to see it all laid out until the bit where you count series 11 as part of Doctor Who...

I've despised hiatuses since I had to deal with the first one in 2011. I think they're stupid and do absolutely nothing for the show. They don't build hype, they don't make us miss it, they remove it from our screens and our minds to all but the most extreme fans.
Not airing Doctor Who makes us not care about Doctor Who.
That's just my two cents. I don't like it.
At least they're not releasing all the episodes at once, like Netflix, or bombing us with daily episodes, like Cartoon Network.
The Miraculous Ladybug fans are the ones who really have something to complain about. At least we can generally guess when the show will air.
It took me a year to watch this because I've been busy, and I can say now that Doctor Who is back that the wait hasn't been worth it just yet. If they keep up the quality of the first episode, then maybe.

I dont think it would be unusual or a problem if Season 11 with JW had been well-reviewed. Since S11 (and JW and/or Chibnall) is/was considered a flop, it might have more going on behind the scenes than we have been privy to. Personally, I have never been a major die-hard fan of the 2005 series, although I have continued to watch it through.
Back to the topic now - JW's opening season, reminds me of Colin Baker's opening season. A bit of a disaster - have to admit I stopped watching originally around the time of Colin Baker's entry. I hated him, his stupid costume, hated his companions, eg Peri and the hyper-camped up storylines. Wasn't till many years later when I watched the DVD releases with Extras, interviews etc - that I realised it wasn't all his fault. He got a new production team and new writers with unbelievably crap ideas of characters and stories, that just didnt work with audiences, and I hadnt known how much had gone on behind the scenes. And I remember a sudden long break announced at the end. I'm not sure classic Dr Who ever fully recovered from that one disastrous season. I didnt get to see the Sylvester McCoy years until the early 2000s, and loved it - (especially Ace - my favourite girl companion!) but I guess the damage had been done and the BBC just wasnt interested.
It remains to be seen, if they revamp again with Season 12 of the 2005 series.
As I said above, I was never a great fan of the 2005 series, although I did like Peter Capaldi's tenure. Go figure. For me, they changed the *character* of the Doctor too much from the classic series, turned him into a young American-style action superhero character - the "haunted-by-his-tragic-past" superhero, with a dash or two of young arrogant ego (I save the Earth so many times, and where's my gratitude?), everybody knows him, and way too young, just didnt come over like the 900+ yr old Time Lord, and romantic interludes with female companions? Sheesh, give me a break. Classic Dr was humble and modest - he left the scenes quietly and thoughtfully, as the wise old guy he was underneath his youthful looks - even flamboyant Tom Baker was more subdued than the contemporary "Hey! Look At Me do Something Weird and Flash-Bang-SuperCool Now" doctors. Secondly, they not only changed the Dr too much, they changed the *storylines* way too much. I could never understand why they had to remove every last wispy thread of the classic series, and not create any new ones in the same vein. eg. "The Master" returns as a girl "Missy" - but although I liked her, and she really made me laugh, was nothing like 'The Master' . Apart from the "brand name" and a few "stage props", it was a completely different TV_show.
Once I realised that, I could actually enjoy it - just, as a completely different show, more like Luke Cage with a British accent :-)

I think the whole hiatus shit, is just that.....shit. Why didn't they do it , when Tennant was on ? It had the SAME amount of production. We waited the same way with Capaldi , and then he up and quit on us...After we waited all that time for him to return. If this is going to be a current trend, I'd say we're seeing the final curtain for Dr. Who. People have limited attention spans today and NO patience. While some diehard fans will wait, a larger amount will give up on the series and bail on it.
