InDesign 2023 Tutorial - Page Numbers and Automatic Table of Contents

  • This video will first show you how to change your automatic page numbers when designing something with multiple pages, like a book or magazine. It will then show you how to generate an automated table of contents using the paragraph and character styles you created for your chapters and section headers.

      @@JessicaGarrity Firstly, I like where you point out alternative ways to get to some settings and the yellow highlights are awesome. But speaking of where I got lost is mainly at 3:15 where you include paragraph styles; I was like "How did you get them? How are the 'chapter header' and the actual chapters linked?" Or you can also mention if there's another tutorial for that or if you'll not talk about that part. So, I felt like this is more of "how to add and modify the toc instead of how to make an automatic one" whereas I was expecting for the latter part. I think that's why I got confused and lost. But please, it's just someone's opinion. No offend and I only hope it's helpful. Thanks.

      Hi! You can do this in InDesigns "Interactive" settings, and then export as an interactive pdf with links to different page numbers

    Great tutorial! If you have a lengthy TOC is there a way to have it roll over to the next page?

      ABCGraphics thank you so much! Yes, if you want it on 2 pages, you would just set it up as 2 linked text frames (one on each page). Then when you update the ToC, it will carry over into the linked frame.

    How do I create a ToC when I am using the Book feature (merging together a series of indesign files)? I have made a few test books as I practice but how do I make a ToC in that situation? Thank you!!

      It should be similar, where you setup the paragraph styles in that final merged file, and then generate the ToC

      @@JessicaGarrity One of my students email this link to me and told me she was lost, i told her not to get ahead of the schedule as we are not doing a table of contents yet, anyway I looked and I realize she was stuck at "Levels" feature which is common to my students be it an "Index" level to a Bullet or numbered list, my students always get stuck at levels and this was the issue especially with 15 people on zoom, its a challenge.
