The 360 version of Sonic Generations has been backwards compatible on Xbox One for a while, but they recently added "FPS Boost" which allows 60FPS and 4K resolution when played on Xbox Series X.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the *Definitive* Sonic 3 for me. I still remember when i got the stage select code for the game and discovered those 'other' stages and that got me hooked for the meaning behind that Flying Battery Zone that was mentioned. I got what i, we, asked for months later :)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mania are my two Sonic GOATs. S3&K has quite a story going for it without using words. Mania takes what made the Genesis games great and improved on it. I didn't like Sonic CD's level design. The time travel mechanic and emphasis on exploration ruined the flow of the game. I'm so used to collecting rings, killing enemies, and reaching the end of the level.
Couldn't agree more. I wish Sega actually utilized their IPs and had a 2D series running in tandem with 3D, like Mario and Zelda do. Make a Mania 2 or continue the series after S3&K.
Transformed is, to me, the best "Kart-game" ever. It just has everything. Also on Series X, it just got HDR- and fps boost support. I started play it from beginning again. Fantastic and finally with 60fps on console. If you missed it, correct that error!
I didn't like it. The controls feel loose and floaty compared to the snapy-ness of Mario Kart. It's almost like driving through canola oil for me, and the other vehicles seem to control even looser. That said, I love the world design, and being able to play as Beat and Vyse make me want to like it so bad.
Great game, top 10 best kart racers for sure and probably top 5 if I think further along. Best kart game ever though, I’ll say no, I’ve got three Mario kart games ahead of it, Crash team racing nitro fueled and diddy king racing are both games I enjoy a little more and even games like Modnation racers and Konami racers are something I’ll consider (I wish Konami would’ve continued with another Konami racers game).
Too bad that the Master System version of Part 1 gets no love. It is still my favorite Sonic Game, with fantastic level design and a lot of variety. It feels different to the 16-Bit games by being not as fast, so I kind of understand why it is often singled out, but this is just so much fun to play and rewarding.
Well said. Master System Sonic the Hedgehog is a masterpiece. Shame it is so overlooked because it's just an "inferior" 8-bit Sonic in the eyes many gamers of that era. I like it better than the 16-bit one. Master System version of Sonic 2 is excellent as well.

I don't get how peaple like sonic CD gameplay wise the level Design is god awful worse then sonic one the stages are to big and everything feels like it was placed in places for no reason also the bosses are absolute garbage I like how the 3rd act acts like a little build up to it though everything else is very good music is good graphics are very nice but the confusing and not that good gameplay just ruins it for me but you know it's sonic peaple will like it but I personally think it's the worst out of the classic sonic games also him putting it above sonic 2 sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles technically made me really mad because it doesn't even come close to being as good as sonic 2 and the sonic 3 games but sonic one is debatable because that game also kinda sucks sometimes but whatever it's just a video game remember that this is all my stupid opinion so don't get mad at this poorly written comment.
I wish we would ever get a definitive answer WHY the music was so terrible. All I've ever seen was speculation, but we do know that the music tracks call for instruments that were never programmed in - indicating an incomplete or rushed soundtrack.
Wow, someone finally agrees with me on Sonic Chronicles, never thought I'd see that day. But one big reason there can't be sequels of it is because of Ken Penders and his lawsuit, preventing the use of the main new characters and story elements of this game again.
Now that Sonic Generations runs at 4K / 60fps on Xbox Series X, it has become one of my favorite Sonic games ever. All-Stars Racing Transformed has always been great but now that it's also 60fps on Xbox Series consoles it is absolutely AMAZING. 💙
I know people will think I'm crazy, but of all of the Sonic games, Sonic Adventure was the one I had the most fun with and spent the most time on. I loved everything about that game, and to this day, I still haven't met another console with the feeling that the Dreamcast had.
It's my favorite as well and the only one I ever really loved. Popping that disc in the Dreamcast on 9.9.99 and seeing Sonic's world in fully explorable 3-D is one of my favorite gaming memories.
This really brought be back to before Sonic 2 came out and all the anticipation I felt leading up to its release. Then to finally have it in my hands that Christmas holiday and having the time to really savor it. It did not disappoint and was so much fun to play it, seeing the improvements they made over the original, and figuring things out. I didn't have a NES when Mario 3 came out, but I imagine there was similar magic for that game. It truly felt special to me playing Sonic 2 at the end of 1992. It fully lived up to all the hype in my eyes, though I could get it to glitch in the Chemical Plant Zone and get stuck sometimes if I went too fast.. It really is a shame they were so fixated on making everything 3D in the 32-bit era that they couldn't just provide a traditional 2D Sonic on Saturn that was redrawn and enhanced in the way that Sonic Mania is both familiar but well beyond the capabilities of the Genesis. I never could get into Sonic CD. Exploration is not as much my thing as straightforward action is. But I think I'll go back to it. When I last played it, I wasn't at my best mentally and I needed no-nonsense, intense action to enjoy playing. But I have changed my mind on games that never grabbed me before, even some that should have been my kinds of games in the first place. I've been going back to some lately to give them another chance and several games have really jumped out at me as being a lot more fun than they were when I had last played them. Knights of the Round arcade and Undercover Cops arcade are two of those that I didn't hate before, but I enjoyed them so much more recently. Another is Yoshi's Island for SNES, which was just a bit too slow and relaxed for me at the time I previously played it, but I've been playing through that in the last few days and have had a good bit of fun with it. The presentation of that is quite nice. It's in that spirit that I should give Sonic CD another shot. It's always nice when a game you didn't like much in the past grabs you in a way where you finally get what all the fuss was about.
I grew up with a Sega Genesis and I will always gravitate back towards the 2D Sonic games as well. I've tried the 3D ones, but they just didn't gel with me at all. I'd actually have a similar list minus games like Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Mania is probably my favorite as well since it offers so much classic Sonic goodness! Sonic CD is also one of my favorites as I actually like the time travel mechanic and has one of my favorite game soundtracks! It also can be beaten faster than most other Sonic games, so it is fun to replay for a quick burst of fun. This is going to sound weird, but I also really love Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine even if it isn't really a "true" Sonic game. I just love Puyo Puyo that much! 😅
The All Stars racing series are all my favorite games in the series. I played the original the least, but I absolutely love Transformed and Team. As for the mainline games, I have a soft spot for Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure, but they're both rough for me to play today.
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is one of my favorite "kart racers" outside of Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing. The game had the pure thrill of an arcade racer mixed with Mario Kart elements! I'd love to see another entry into the series with all the Sega characters back. I heard Team Sonic Racing was decent, but not quite as good as All-Stars.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles as well, even though I know it is incredibly flawed but I still enjoyed trying out different party combinations with some of the iconic characters from across the series.
My personal fav titles are Master System Sonic 1, Transformed and the Adventure titles. I've put so many hours into them all that it's just silly. It's a shame Master System Sonic doesn't get much love as it's soundtrack is flawless, the map screen is a nice depiction of progress, and the emeralds throughout the stages that reward daring exploration is a prefrence over special stages for me. Solid list though.
The sheer excitement and joy of unboxing a sega megadrive in 1993 at Christmas, to play Sonic 2, is still unrivalled. I mean come on, look at it, listen to it, it's a masterpiece.

Colours and Transformed saved my interest in the series. Colours for the intricate level designs and Transformed for the sheer spectacle and being more skill based than Mario Kart
For Sonic standards, Sonic Adventure 2 is the peak of the series' English voice acting. As far as overall voice direction, and the voices matching the characters. That story had the perfect tone as well. Just has horrific sound mixing at times. Non modded versions of Sonic Adventure 1 really sell the game short. It needs a remake more than any in the series by a wide margin.
The forcing to play as anyone but sonic ruins half of adventures 2 for me. They should have just let them follow sonic or sonic hold their and and run with them like he do in the cartoon. Or jump on their back while the fly. Jump on their robot .. The worst thing about adventures is (gasp) The homin attack .!!! The ruination of sonic 3D games . Either way, both are 10/10 games (except for Big's mission, good Lord) imo, and two of my favorite games ever made!
While I did explore the Genesis library more than most others have, Sonic was basically my Mario. I had grown up playing Sonic games and never even heard of a Super Nintendo until I was finally allowed on the internet around 13 or so, and pretty much loved the series from the start. Granted, it wasn't until later when I understood why I loved the physics and momentum of the controls, and the "Classic Era" is my favorite because despite enjoying all eras of Sonic for what they are the original trilogy seriously aged like a fine wine, their presentation and game play holds up well for modern tastes if you enjoy satisfyingly difficult games. On my absolute favorite, I'm quite torn between Sonic 1 or Sonic 3, I find myself humming music from both those games without even thinking about it sometimes. I am quite surprised you actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles. I have not played it recently, but as a kid with a DS (because it was cheap, mind you) I remember enjoying it quite a bit, though that is probably a freak who loves both action and RPG games equally. (Seriously, someone make a Rougelike Looter Shooter in the GZDoom engine... with platforming, I dare ya!) I was able to look past the music quality back then, but yeech, recordings from the Genesis' headphone jack would have served better music for the overworld. Maybe if the music was good more people would give it fair reviews, since it was certainly engaging enough to keep a kid of my type entertained through multiple playthroughs. As for Sega's handling of Sonic today... ehh... I don't have high expectations nor low expectations. Another mediocre Sonic game now would hurt his reputation even more, and unless they give the next game coming out some actual relaxed time in the oven it's probably gonna be mediocre again. Seriously, I've mostly turned to fan works to keep me excited about Sonic and finding good games featuring him. Fans even made the perfect 3D Sonic game for me in the form of Sonic Robo Blast 2, as it tries to mimic the classic 2d style while putting it's own spin on things thanks to it's heavily modified Doom engine it uses, it's quite impressive how such a versatile, powerful engine originated from 1993.

Just bought a Sonic plushie toy in my local smths toy barn this morning when in buying a foot tall MechaGodzilla for my nephew (yeah I'm a cool uncle who's teaching him about the Toho originals etc). Cute girl behind the counter serves me and say "Oh my dad plays the old sonic also". CHRIST I'M OLD. I'm 39 and still remember getting a mega drive on my 9th birthday in 1991. Sonic was the game I turned to in my 11 to 13 year old time in school when I got bullied bad. He was and still is a special part of my childhood. Great video Lord. Absolutely brilliant
I was in my latter teens when I played Sonic Chronicles, and I quite enjoyed it then (and still do now). I thought it was a solid game all-around. Nothing spectacular, but a nice enjoyable game nonetheless. My younger sisters enjoyed it too (and still do), so it wasn't just me. I wasn't much of an internet person back then, so imagine my surprise a few years later when I find out it's one of the most trashed Sonic games ever by just about everyone online, whether on forums or on UA-cam. Now different strokes for different folks and all that, but after about a decade of wondering why the heck I like the game and genuinely see few reasons to regard it as one of Sonic's low points when practically everybody seems to dunk on the game or resist talking about it at all, I've finally come across someone else who openly shares my opinion of the game. Thanks SLX!
My favorites would be Sonic Generations HD (best Sonic game in general), Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, Sonic3&Knuckles (best 2D Sonic game), Sega All Stars Racing, All Stars Racing Transformed (best Sonic spinoff), Sonic Colors Wii version, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure/DX, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush Adventure, and Sonic Triple Trouble.
Very well thought out list. I would have included at least one of the Sonic Advance games and Sonic 3D Blast with its incredible soundtrack, both on the Genesis and Saturn versions.
I agree, Sonic advance games were mind blowing at the time to have on a Nintendo handheld and visually and gameplay wise I believe they still hold out pretty well today
Agreed, my list is the same as SLX’s but I consider S3+Knuckles one game, stick Sonic Advance 2 in Knuckles place, replace Sonic Adventure 2 with Sonic Advance 1, and replace that DS game is with Sonic Advance 3.
I always loved the Sonic Games, mainly because I was a major Sega fanboy in my time. I started off with the Master System, and then discovered the Mega Drive from my brother, who tended to bring over rental consoles and some great games to play on. I rekindled my interest in the Mega Drive after finding one at a charity shop one day, for $5AU. It came in a nifty Nuby carry case, and had two controllers. And it also worked brilliantly. This was technology that was designed to last. I later got a Mega CD Model 1, and a 32X addon, and more recently, a Sega Game Gear. And I've never been better. These wonder consoles were worth the effort finding and getting, and with their brilliant design, they deserve to be played.
Great list. I would have to add in Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World. Those are 2 Sonic titles I believe do not get enough attention. Hopefully with the rerelease of Colors, more people will be able to enjoy it. Keep up the great work!
Starlight Zone is fantastic and Labyrinth is a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. Scrap Brain is challenging as a final level should be. Sonic 1 has no filler unlike Sonic 2 where I could do without some of the levels in the second half.

I was all set to say "what about Sonic Mania????", but yep, #1. It's one of the best platformers I've ever played and I'd never even heard of it until I picked it up on sale.
Dr. Robotnik's true name is Dr. Eggman because he is shaped like an egg. The "Bonus Stages", where you obtain Chaos, Super and Sol Emeralds, Time Stones and Chaos Rings, are called Special Stages, not Bonus Stages. The Bonus Stages that you're thinking of are the Gumball Machine, Magnetic Orbs and Slot Machine Bonus Stages from the Sonic 3 series (Sonic 3 Standalone, Sonic & Knuckles Standalone, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 Complete), etc.. The worst Sonic racing game is Team Sonic Racing because the game does not keep track of your online win and loss records. Plus, Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is the true Sonic 4.
Seeing Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on here was a delight. I love that game, the Xbox version in particular, and it saddens me that it somehow didn't make the cut for Xbox backwards compatibility. I'd love to know why.
Unpopular opinion, but I always loved the idea of Sonic more than the experience. Sonic Adventure in 1999 was the game to change that for me. Absolutely adored it and have even gone back to the OG Sonic and really enjoy it a lot more now than I used to. But I'd say my top 5 were, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations, Sonic 1, Sonic and Sega Allstars Racing Transformed. Hopefully this won't get me banned! haha. I really do need to give Sonic 2 the same stab I did the 1st. I also loved the idea of Sonic CD but just found it too unweildly too :( Oh and I can't believe I completely forgot about Sonic Mania in this comment! That is definitely number bestest!

Mania really was incredible. I was in college at the time but I ended up staying awake all night just to wait for the pre-order to unlock. Think I got up to Press Garden around 2 or 3 in the morning before I decided to try and get (some) sleep.
I will never forget the ending music..thanx for encorperating it here in its fullness! That's why you are sega lord x......something 15 year old me would of really aspired too. Thank you emulation for allowing me to at least keep in touch with my youthful self.
Sonic pocket adventure has always been a special and underappreciated title. First sonic game i ever completed haha. Snk and sega was a cool blend at the wrong time.
I love Chronicles as well. Unfortunately Sega was never able to continue the series since they were sued by a former writer of the Sonic comic who wanted royalties for them loosely adapting his work into this game.
Also because the game was developed by Bioware, who got bought out by EA while the game was in the middle of development, leading the game to be rushed out so that Bioware could end their contract with Sega as soon as possible. The game also sold poorly, so even without the Ken Penders situation, a sequel wouldn't have been likely regardless.

I would have to agree that SONIC MANIA is probably the finest game in the entire franchise! It’s strongly connected to the series history over all but it does stand out as the best it has to offer.
This list is honestly pretty spot on. Granted, I know my own differs, but at the same time, I can acknowledge and understand why you’ve ranked them how you have, based on your reasoning. I was long awaiting a Top 10 Sonic title list from you, and I knew it was a WHEN, not an IF. Little known fact: The only reason why Sonic Chronicles didn’t continue as a franchise was due to a legal battle between Sega, Archie Comics, and a notorious figure known as Ken Penders, who worked for Archie and claimed that Chronicles blatantly infringed upon original creature designs and concepts that he made for the Sonic comics at the time. This same legal battle is also what led to the eventual end of Archie and Sega’s partnership, ergo the Sonic Comics that began in 1992, and also why Sega prefers to disavow the existence of Sonic Chronicles 😂😂😂😂
actually, Sega and Archies Partership ended due to declining sales, Archie bleeding money, and Sega increasing the price value for the Sonic ip due to inflation in japan. Archie thought it wasn't worth renewing it in the end. but as for chronicles, yes Penders was the reason that game never got a sequel.

@@goranisacson2502 The lawsuit still had an effect on the comic though. It was the reason why Alot of the characters Penders created for the series got erased from the series in its later years. And that was something Archie wanted to do because they wanted to cover up that they screwed up on the legal paperwork that they gave Penders when he joined (meaning that those characters were public domain for the longest time).
Great list! Sonic 3 and Knuckles will always be number one for me. I thought it was interesting you put Sonic Chronicles in here - while it's a flawed game with terrible music, I thought the gameplay was really fun and would love to see that formula perfected.

And I'll admit I haven't put the time into Sonic CD you have. Sonic Mania at #1 is perfectly defensible. Every game I needed to see on your list made it there.
A good old isometric sonic (with some camera rotation available maybe), made akin to sonic 3d blast, but with better graphics and open world, sporting some rpg elements in it to further the storytelling, would be amazing. I don't know why SEGA isn't doing this already.
I think it's absolutely criminal that a sequel for Sonic Mania isn't in the pipeline. The team behind it didn't just knock it out of the park, it went stratospheric.

The 360 version of Sonic Generations has been backwards compatible on Xbox One for a while, but they recently added "FPS Boost" which allows 60FPS and 4K resolution when played on Xbox Series X.
It was already 4K enhanced for Xbox one X.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Mania are my two Sonic GOATs. S3&K has quite a story going for it without using words. Mania takes what made the Genesis games great and improved on it.
I didn't like Sonic CD's level design. The time travel mechanic and emphasis on exploration ruined the flow of the game. I'm so used to collecting rings, killing enemies, and reaching the end of the level.

Transformed is, to me, the best "Kart-game" ever. It just has everything. Also on Series X, it just got HDR- and fps boost support. I started play it from beginning again. Fantastic and finally with 60fps on console. If you missed it, correct that error!

I didn't like it. The controls feel loose and floaty compared to the snapy-ness of Mario Kart. It's almost like driving through canola oil for me, and the other vehicles seem to control even looser. That said, I love the world design, and being able to play as Beat and Vyse make me want to like it so bad.
Great game, top 10 best kart racers for sure and probably top 5 if I think further along. Best kart game ever though, I’ll say no, I’ve got three Mario kart games ahead of it, Crash team racing nitro fueled and diddy king racing are both games I enjoy a little more and even games like Modnation racers and Konami racers are something I’ll consider (I wish Konami would’ve continued with another Konami racers game).
Agree. Transformed played on Series X is just incredible. It is easy the best version of the game.
Too bad that the Master System version of Part 1 gets no love. It is still my favorite Sonic Game, with fantastic level design and a lot of variety. It feels different to the 16-Bit games by being not as fast, so I kind of understand why it is often singled out, but this is just so much fun to play and rewarding.
Well said. Master System Sonic the Hedgehog is a masterpiece. Shame it is so overlooked because it's just an "inferior" 8-bit Sonic in the eyes many gamers of that era. I like it better than the 16-bit one. Master System version of Sonic 2 is excellent as well.

I wish we would ever get a definitive answer WHY the music was so terrible. All I've ever seen was speculation, but we do know that the music tracks call for instruments that were never programmed in - indicating an incomplete or rushed soundtrack.

Wow, someone finally agrees with me on Sonic Chronicles, never thought I'd see that day. But one big reason there can't be sequels of it is because of Ken Penders and his lawsuit, preventing the use of the main new characters and story elements of this game again.
Now that Sonic Generations runs at 4K / 60fps on Xbox Series X, it has become one of my favorite Sonic games ever. All-Stars Racing Transformed has always been great but now that it's also 60fps on Xbox Series consoles it is absolutely AMAZING. 💙
I got Sonic 06 to run at 60fps and 4K and it's dreamy.
I know people will think I'm crazy, but of all of the Sonic games, Sonic Adventure was the one I had the most fun with and spent the most time on. I loved everything about that game, and to this day, I still haven't met another console with the feeling that the Dreamcast had.

It's my favorite as well and the only one I ever really loved. Popping that disc in the Dreamcast on 9.9.99 and seeing Sonic's world in fully explorable 3-D is one of my favorite gaming memories.
This really brought be back to before Sonic 2 came out and all the anticipation I felt leading up to its release. Then to finally have it in my hands that Christmas holiday and having the time to really savor it. It did not disappoint and was so much fun to play it, seeing the improvements they made over the original, and figuring things out. I didn't have a NES when Mario 3 came out, but I imagine there was similar magic for that game. It truly felt special to me playing Sonic 2 at the end of 1992. It fully lived up to all the hype in my eyes, though I could get it to glitch in the Chemical Plant Zone and get stuck sometimes if I went too fast.. It really is a shame they were so fixated on making everything 3D in the 32-bit era that they couldn't just provide a traditional 2D Sonic on Saturn that was redrawn and enhanced in the way that Sonic Mania is both familiar but well beyond the capabilities of the Genesis.
I never could get into Sonic CD. Exploration is not as much my thing as straightforward action is. But I think I'll go back to it. When I last played it, I wasn't at my best mentally and I needed no-nonsense, intense action to enjoy playing. But I have changed my mind on games that never grabbed me before, even some that should have been my kinds of games in the first place. I've been going back to some lately to give them another chance and several games have really jumped out at me as being a lot more fun than they were when I had last played them. Knights of the Round arcade and Undercover Cops arcade are two of those that I didn't hate before, but I enjoyed them so much more recently. Another is Yoshi's Island for SNES, which was just a bit too slow and relaxed for me at the time I previously played it, but I've been playing through that in the last few days and have had a good bit of fun with it. The presentation of that is quite nice. It's in that spirit that I should give Sonic CD another shot. It's always nice when a game you didn't like much in the past grabs you in a way where you finally get what all the fuss was about.

I grew up with a Sega Genesis and I will always gravitate back towards the 2D Sonic games as well. I've tried the 3D ones, but they just didn't gel with me at all.
I'd actually have a similar list minus games like Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic Mania is probably my favorite as well since it offers so much classic Sonic goodness! Sonic CD is also one of my favorites as I actually like the time travel mechanic and has one of my favorite game soundtracks! It also can be beaten faster than most other Sonic games, so it is fun to replay for a quick burst of fun.
This is going to sound weird, but I also really love Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine even if it isn't really a "true" Sonic game. I just love Puyo Puyo that much! 😅

The All Stars racing series are all my favorite games in the series. I played the original the least, but I absolutely love Transformed and Team.
As for the mainline games, I have a soft spot for Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure, but they're both rough for me to play today.
I am a Nintendo guy who grew up with Mario Kart and I think All Stars Racing Transformed is the best Kart racing game (but it's close!).
I love Transformed, I just wish there was a way to handicap players in multiplayer
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is one of my favorite "kart racers" outside of Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing. The game had the pure thrill of an arcade racer mixed with Mario Kart elements! I'd love to see another entry into the series with all the Sega characters back. I heard Team Sonic Racing was decent, but not quite as good as All-Stars.

I actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles as well, even though I know it is incredibly flawed but I still enjoyed trying out different party combinations with some of the iconic characters from across the series.
My personal fav titles are Master System Sonic 1, Transformed and the Adventure titles. I've put so many hours into them all that it's just silly. It's a shame Master System Sonic doesn't get much love as it's soundtrack is flawless, the map screen is a nice depiction of progress, and the emeralds throughout the stages that reward daring exploration is a prefrence over special stages for me. Solid list though.
The sheer excitement and joy of unboxing a sega megadrive in 1993 at Christmas, to play Sonic 2,
is still unrivalled.

Colours and Transformed saved my interest in the series. Colours for the intricate level designs and Transformed for the sheer spectacle and being more skill based than Mario Kart
For Sonic standards, Sonic Adventure 2 is the peak of the series' English voice acting. As far as overall voice direction, and the voices matching the characters. That story had the perfect tone as well. Just has horrific sound mixing at times. Non modded versions of Sonic Adventure 1 really sell the game short. It needs a remake more than any in the series by a wide margin.
The forcing to play as anyone but sonic ruins half of adventures 2 for me.
They should have just let them follow sonic or sonic hold their and and run with them like he do in the cartoon.

You have great taste! SA1 and SA2 are extremely close to me. I feel like the one that's my favorite just kinda depends on my mood that day. I feel like I change my mind every month or so. Either way, both are 10/10 games (except for Big's mission, good Lord) imo, and two of my favorite games ever made!
Sonic Mania is amazing, it's what Sonic could've been on the Saturn. 32 bit style.
While I did explore the Genesis library more than most others have, Sonic was basically my Mario. I had grown up playing Sonic games and never even heard of a Super Nintendo until I was finally allowed on the internet around 13 or so, and pretty much loved the series from the start. Granted, it wasn't until later when I understood why I loved the physics and momentum of the controls, and the "Classic Era" is my favorite because despite enjoying all eras of Sonic for what they are the original trilogy seriously aged like a fine wine, their presentation and game play holds up well for modern tastes if you enjoy satisfyingly difficult games. On my absolute favorite, I'm quite torn between Sonic 1 or Sonic 3, I find myself humming music from both those games without even thinking about it sometimes.
I am quite surprised you actually enjoyed Sonic Chronicles. I have not played it recently, but as a kid with a DS (because it was cheap, mind you) I remember enjoying it quite a bit, though that is probably a freak who loves both action and RPG games equally. (Seriously, someone make a Rougelike Looter Shooter in the GZDoom engine... with platforming, I dare ya!) I was able to look past the music quality back then, but yeech, recordings from the Genesis' headphone jack would have served better music for the overworld. Maybe if the music was good more people would give it fair reviews, since it was certainly engaging enough to keep a kid of my type entertained through multiple playthroughs.
As for Sega's handling of Sonic today... ehh... I don't have high expectations nor low expectations. Another mediocre Sonic game now would hurt his reputation even more, and unless they give the next game coming out some actual relaxed time in the oven it's probably gonna be mediocre again. Seriously, I've mostly turned to fan works to keep me excited about Sonic and finding good games featuring him. Fans even made the perfect 3D Sonic game for me in the form of Sonic Robo Blast 2, as it tries to mimic the classic 2d style while putting it's own spin on things thanks to it's heavily modified Doom engine it uses, it's quite impressive how such a versatile, powerful engine originated from 1993.

I was in my latter teens when I played Sonic Chronicles, and I quite enjoyed it then (and still do now). I thought it was a solid game all-around. Nothing spectacular, but a nice enjoyable game nonetheless. My younger sisters enjoyed it too (and still do), so it wasn't just me. I wasn't much of an internet person back then, so imagine my surprise a few years later when I find out it's one of the most trashed Sonic games ever by just about everyone online, whether on forums or on UA-cam. Now different strokes for different folks and all that, but after about a decade of wondering why the heck I like the game and genuinely see few reasons to regard it as one of Sonic's low points when practically everybody seems to dunk on the game or resist talking about it at all, I've finally come across someone else who openly shares my opinion of the game. Thanks SLX!
My favorites would be Sonic Generations HD (best Sonic game in general), Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, Sonic3&Knuckles (best 2D Sonic game), Sega All Stars Racing, All Stars Racing Transformed (best Sonic spinoff), Sonic Colors Wii version, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure/DX, Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Rush Adventure, and Sonic Triple Trouble.

Agreed, my list is the same as SLX’s but I consider S3+Knuckles one game, stick Sonic Advance 2 in Knuckles place, replace Sonic Adventure 2 with Sonic Advance 1, and replace that DS game is with Sonic Advance 3.
I always loved the Sonic Games, mainly because I was a major Sega fanboy in my time. I started off with the Master System, and then discovered the Mega Drive from my brother, who tended to bring over rental consoles and some great games to play on. I rekindled my interest in the Mega Drive after finding one at a charity shop one day, for $5AU. It came in a nifty Nuby carry case, and had two controllers. And it also worked brilliantly. This was technology that was designed to last.
I later got a Mega CD Model 1, and a 32X addon, and more recently, a Sega Game Gear. And I've never been better. These wonder consoles were worth the effort finding and getting, and with their brilliant design, they deserve to be played.

Starlight Zone is fantastic and Labyrinth is a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. Scrap Brain is challenging as a final level should be. Sonic 1 has no filler unlike Sonic 2 where I could do without some of the levels in the second half.

Dr. Robotnik's true name is Dr. Eggman because he is shaped like an egg. The "Bonus Stages", where you obtain Chaos, Super and Sol Emeralds, Time Stones and Chaos Rings, are called Special Stages, not Bonus Stages. The Bonus Stages that you're thinking of are the Gumball Machine, Magnetic Orbs and Slot Machine Bonus Stages from the Sonic 3 series (Sonic 3 Standalone, Sonic & Knuckles Standalone, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic 3 Complete), etc.. The worst Sonic racing game is Team Sonic Racing because the game does not keep track of your online win and loss records. Plus, Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is the true Sonic 4.
Seeing Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on here was a delight. I love that game, the Xbox version in particular, and it saddens me that it somehow didn't make the cut for Xbox backwards compatibility. I'd love to know why.

Unpopular opinion, but I always loved the idea of Sonic more than the experience. Sonic Adventure in 1999 was the game to change that for me. Absolutely adored it and have even gone back to the OG Sonic and really enjoy it a lot more now than I used to. But I'd say my top 5 were, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations, Sonic 1, Sonic and Sega Allstars Racing Transformed. Hopefully this won't get me banned! haha.
I really do need to give Sonic 2 the same stab I did the 1st. I also loved the idea of Sonic CD but just found it too unweildly too :(

Sonic Mania was such a great way to introduce my kids to my favorite hedgehog. I played the living hell out of the Sonic games back in the 90s.
I'm honestly amazed people had good things to say about Sonic Chronicles. One hell of an opener to the list.
Mania really was incredible. I was in college at the time but I ended up staying awake all night just to wait for the pre-order to unlock. Think I got up to Press Garden around 2 or 3 in the morning before I decided to try and get (some) sleep.

I love Chronicles as well. Unfortunately Sega was never able to continue the series since they were sued by a former writer of the Sonic comic who wanted royalties for them loosely adapting his work into this game.

Also because the game was developed by Bioware, who got bought out by EA while the game was in the middle of development, leading the game to be rushed out so that Bioware could end their contract with Sega as soon as possible. The game also sold poorly, so even without the Ken Penders situation, a sequel wouldn't have been likely regardless.

Nice shoutout to the Southern Sega Gentleman at the end there. I have been a subscriber of his for years. He is the LGR of the Sega Saturn community, imo.

I would have to agree that SONIC MANIA is probably the finest game in the entire franchise! It’s strongly connected to the series history over all but it does stand out as the best it has to offer.
This list is honestly pretty spot on. Granted, I know my own differs, but at the same time, I can acknowledge and understand why you’ve ranked them how you have, based on your reasoning. I was long awaiting a Top 10 Sonic title list from you, and I knew it was a WHEN, not an IF.
Little known fact: The only reason why Sonic Chronicles didn’t continue as a franchise was due to a legal battle between Sega, Archie Comics, and a notorious figure known as Ken Penders, who worked for Archie and claimed that Chronicles blatantly infringed upon original creature designs and concepts that he made for the Sonic comics at the time.
This same legal battle is also what led to the eventual end of Archie and Sega’s partnership, ergo the Sonic Comics that began in 1992, and also why Sega prefers to disavow the existence of Sonic Chronicles 😂😂😂😂
actually, Sega and Archies Partership ended due to declining sales, Archie bleeding money, and Sega increasing the price value for the Sonic ip due to inflation in japan.
Archie thought it wasn't worth renewing it in the end.
but as for chronicles, yes Penders was the reason that game never got a sequel.
@@lloydshanahan154 really? Huh, I had heard Penders and the lawsuit was behind the split, but if there was economic troubles... I guess I've fallen victim for your regular game of internet rumour-telephone. Though I suppose all the trouble around the lawsuit didn't exactly HELP either...
@@goranisacson2502 The lawsuit still had an effect on the comic though. It was the reason why Alot of the characters Penders created for the series got erased from the series in its later years. And that was something Archie wanted to do because they wanted to cover up that they screwed up on the legal paperwork that they gave Penders when he joined (meaning that those characters were public domain for the longest time).

Great list! Sonic 3 and Knuckles will always be number one for me. I thought it was interesting you put Sonic Chronicles in here - while it's a flawed game with terrible music, I thought the gameplay was really fun and would love to see that formula perfected.

I'm a bit of a Sonic apologist overall but there are definitely bad games in the series. I would reccomend playing the boost games some more. They're really fun when you try to master the levels. Great video though.
Do the GBA Sonic games (aside from Chronicle) figure into this list? Otherwise this is a good list and it reminded me that there should be more modern ports of classics like Sonic CD.

I've got nostalgia for older Sonic games so I'd love to bump Mania off for something else from my childhood, but I cannot deny it's quality, and it really feels like a classic anyway.

Sega Lord X is the man. I really want to see some sort of collaboration between him and SNES drunk.

You know what, X? Respect! Sonic 3 & Knuckles is my undisputed #1, but if you have to break them into 2 games, I agree, Sonic 2 beats both individually. And I'll admit I haven't put the time into Sonic CD you have. Sonic Mania at #1 is perfectly defensible. Every game I needed to see on your list made it there.
A good old isometric sonic (with some camera rotation available maybe), made akin to sonic 3d blast, but with better graphics and open world, sporting some rpg elements in it to further the storytelling, would be amazing. I don't know why SEGA isn't doing this already.
Sonic Mania basically looks and plays like how you REMEMBER the classic games looking and playing.
I think it's absolutely criminal that a sequel for Sonic Mania isn't in the pipeline. The team behind it didn't just knock it out of the park, it went stratospheric.

It's ironic one of the best places to play many of the best Sonic games is the GameCube.
A very solid list and I agree with most of these. Sonic Mania definitely deserves the top spot and was an incredible experience.
I haven't played any Sonic games after Sonic & Knuckles except for Sonic Mania which is a work of art.
mania is what happens when developers have actual passion for the project. that is what sonic 4 should have been(dont forget that sega actually released sonic 4 in parts, didnt go well).
