Brandon strikes again. These last 2 videos have been brilliant. Things I've been trying to teach my students for a while now. Also really like how you incorporate 7ths Into your sweeps instead of the overused and abused triads. Triads are still great don't get me wrong. The backbone to so much texture and flavor from one song to the next. It lets you as Synyster Gates says "create your own weather"
You're right! Jimi Hendrix only became Jimi Hendrix after years of sixteen, seventeen and even eighteen hours of practice a day, learning how to teach a guitar to speak; and anyone can, with effort and patience, learn what you are teaching: great video. I appreciate your open use of a metronome too. "Thanks for Your help."
This should be called "Sweep Picking, the Missing Lesson". Really helpful and I've studied Petrucci and Jason Becker stuff. I learned quite a bit here, despite having been at this technique for years.
I’ve been looking for a good well structured sweep picking lesson ever since I was a kid reading Frank Gambale lessons in Guitar Player magazine in 1988. Your video is rockin. Really appreciate the time lapse showing your improvement after weeks of practice. The tab and caged references are a great way to clearly show the shapes. Thanks.
Another tip: flattening out the palm of your picking hand is massive for right hand muting in addition to left hand muting. I changed my picking hand/technique for sweeping/complex string skipping after watching Jason Richardson and it’s been massive for incredibly complex shapes and high speeds with minimal feedback. You want to hold your pick lightly (but not too loose that you lose control or can lose the pick), make a fist and then you want to almost flatten out that fist and extend the knuckles so that your palm and the flesh of your hand is covering and muting every string you aren’t playing. You want to be almost halfway between a closed fist and flattening out that fist by extending your knuckles. Incredibly useful when playing extended range guitars. Alternate pick your sweeps first too to improve your technique. You should try to roll your fingers as little as possible as well. If you flattened out your finger to play multiple strings, you have the risk of notes ringing into each other or creating a double-stop effect. Try to use one finger at a time and to explore different fingerings, even if it feels weird or unorthodox at first. Will vastly improve you precision and range of motion.
I've been working on most of this over the past two years in the context of learning to flatpick chords as arpeggios rather than all at once. (think intro to More than a Feeling by Boston). I practice almost every day. I just do it while I'm watching my favorite TV shows. I've been at it for about two years, and I figure I've got a year to go to really be reliably good at this in any way. At least I've been doing it right.
If you have a thick pick, like a 2.0 mm, with a 45 degree bevel cut into it, it doesn't matter whether or not you have a death grip, because as the pick moves across the string, the bevel pushes the string down and releases it instantly. The pick does not need to tilt to pass over the string, and so there is no delay, and you can grip it as much as you need to to not have it slip.
The socks went hard! Accountability. FYI I have been a self taught tab monkey for 15 years and just now succumbing to UA-cam tutorials so I’ll be back soon
@@jacknickel7765 what do you mean? They clearly are a cool guide for introduction level beginners, and also people who want to reinforce that kind of learning
@@chinchirap Could be, but I don’t really see this guy as a very good teacher, yeah he may well have the concepts down really well but if you don’t he’ll pretty much say that guitar isn’t for you and you should start a different hobby. @@jacknickel7765 he's definitely joking about telling his viewers to quit guitar and go smoke cigars xd. Well at least that's how i see it, if i can take it as a joke and enjoy his content regardless idk why any one else couldnt
I've been working on the arpeggios shown in the video for a little over two months now, starting slow and building up speed each week. The only one giving me difficulty is that A Maj 7... the fingering for it is wrecking me lol. I'll comment back here once I've nailed them all including that one I mentioned.
Back in 80s i remember i predicted (thinking) the future of star licks (guitar instructionals) would cuss, calling thier viewers idiots. I liked the idea
The motion of the picking is the easiest part of sweep picking, the real work is done entirely by the picking hand in muting and cleanly moving around the fretboard.
Imagine a advanced 10 year old guitarist playing this video and his mom walks into his room and hears the repeated use of the F bomb! But hey if it makes the content creator feel awesome so be it.
Great content and information in all of your videos. Probably can do without the insulting and yelling though. It really doesn’t add to the content and isn’t necessary. Your knowledge of the guitar and music is enough for me to keep coming back and watching your videos.
5:20 yea yea but when i just start sweeps shouldn't i get to know the shapes before i actually use them? Cuz i literally just started sweep picking for no other reason than it's a cool flex (and potentially can create pretty unique sounding lick/solo) , so from my point of view, it's better to familiarize with the shape before using it. Thoughts?
Awesome video. However, the one thing I'm missing is how to prevent notes ringing together - that to me is the hardest part about sweeping and don't feel like you've provided enough depth there.
I just wanna play 3-4 string sweeps and i'd be happy but im tryna learn my shapes from maj n minor scales,triads..its coming but slow af lol.I need easier shapes bub 😂 im in that fake it fast stage

I liked that 30 day sequence of your room getting messier and messier.

"If your best isn't good enough, just quit!" Encouragement at its finest!😂
My wife left me for her boss. But damn it, after 30 days, I'm sweep-picking like a mofo!! Thanks, Drill Sergeant Brandon!
lol your wife working REEEALLY HARD until late nite...just kidding srry to hear that bro xD
Keep on practicing bruv! Maybe someday, her boss would left her for you! It'll be a sweetest revenge story!
It’s been 14 days and now I can sweep pick and I won a Nobel peace prize
At first to have to scream to an camera like a idiot and think you are funny at all
TBH, that's kinda disappointing bruv! I'm expecting you to win at least a silver medal on a sweep picking olympic.
i'm still don't know how to sweep well, but now i know how to use F word well. Thanks :)

It's like you're reading all of the questions I have in my mind and making a video about it.
Yes,it takes time to learn.

Great. straight forward instruction! Love it!
I already do most of these things but honestly I need to practice MORE.
Great tutorial and playing...lots of good stuff in there.
Another tip is to practice until the individual notes are clear on pure clean tone. Delay, reverb, distortion will mask a lot of inaccuracies

i was just starting to learn how, and this video had perfect timing! thanks brandon 🙏
LOL I love the doses of reality about practice interspersed with the actual lesson
My guitar teacher never yelled or cussed at me enough. Pretty sure that's why I'm watching this sweeping tutorial 20 years later.
When brandon was born he said to doctor,"Why dont you fucking pull me out faster i need to sweep my guitar in one motion"😂
7ths for more hammer on/pull off.
Brilliant.
Thank you for this.I will definitely incorporate the info.
If I ever get asked to sweep the floors at my job I'm going to pull a non existant guitar from my back like a cartoon and just start sweep picking

Ok I’ll begin tomorrow. Will be back July 3rd.
Use a jazz III with dried smegma on it. Really helps with grip issues but introduces a new issue too.
I don knw how i managed to watch this video till the end when yu call me an idiot over and over again😂😂😂

drop the banter, great content on it own, thanks
If my country have great , cool and kind teachers like you..Jesus would come down.

sweet lesson. thanks. brah you wore the same shirt three days straight.
its been 14 days and I became the president of the United States
My fret wrap/sock made my strings corrode (i guess you are supposed not to keep them on the entire time. Or change strings more often which I don't)
I like when he shouts and curses at me

Dude... You're fucking hilarious. Love it.

Can you show the Amp setup to sound like your. My amp not sound like that.

its to fuking be expected 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂 almost shat me self laughing , great content mate subbed
Is the second way to hold pic easier to do pinch harmonics?
first time watching this guy is hella funny i like this f&cking shnit lol
bruh that minoir seventh shape with the fucking hammer on is the only thing that got me (and I already know how to sweep lol)
I don't use a pick. Is it possible to learn sweep picking using the index finger nail?
What if you don’t use a pick when you play guitar? Does that mean I have to start using one?
If you dont want to use a pick but want to sweep then maybe you can just hold the pick like Mateus Asato
