I love how you consider geomorphological effects in your art.
Thanks!
*Me, just starting out my map:* Hey, I like this style of trees. I'll try drawing them like this.
*Me, 400 trees later and still not done:* I may have made a mistake
😂 it’ll look AMAZING.
you could put in a circle, oval, and triangle in the same forest if you want, looks cool.
Thank you, Zote
@@sillyhead530 you knave, refer to him as his title!
the guy from AAK
this whole series really got me back into fantasy map-making
Great topic! Maybe this would only make sense for a larger scale map, but it would be cool to hear about the placement of tropical vs temperate vs boreal forest in a fantasy setting!
I'd love to see a video on this personally :)
i love how as you draw the trees to get continually lazier. misaligning stumps, drawing overly thick, making the sides of triangles too long etc. thought i was the only one who did this.
Playing games like Skyrim really help my inspiration. I used to focus heavily on forests and creating many islands, now, I enjoy creating Pangaea-type maps with a heavy focus on deadly ice-lands.
Your videos are great inspiration. I don't have much free time due to stuff. But, after watching your video I've finally decided to free up some time for something that I have, and will enjoy for a long time.
You deserve a lot more subscribers and attention, overall I don't think creative UA-camr's get enough recognition.
In the Frozen unexplored tundra rises titan sized trees. Trees with dark green leaves, the trunk is dark red and becomes lighter and fades into a silver like color on the upper parts. They exists in this harsh envirement due to a sympiotic relation between three domains. A fungi lands on the ground, burrows down into the snow and take the little accessable neutrians, it grows big and into a dark color, due to it’s color the fungi heat up rapidly. In combination with its’ inner cemicals it sets itself on fire, and there’s where the fyrna starts it’s duty.
The fyrna eats the fire and also helps the fungi to grow. When the mycelium is deep enough, the flora starts to grow. The fungi and fyrna helps the flora to get started in life and then when the tree is large enough it becomes the host.
The fungi still grow on the tree and sets itself on fire and feed the fyrna which later feed the trees. This process keeps going on forever.
Fyrna is another group of life forms along side flora, fauna and fungi, it needs heat and minerals to live, it likes any kinds of heat. It loves fire and often grows inside vulcanos. It resists any temprature.
Amazing! :)
Could you do a video or even a small one about a volcanic kind of area or something similar. I love the fantasy map videos though and really enjoy watching them
And remember most of the modern forests in western Europe are planted and not old-growth.
Oh. That’s interesting. I actually didn’t know that.
Yes medieval society had lots of forest but Most were managed. Growing sticks and such.
@@NoOnesBCE Good to know. Might use it in a story
I'm from Croatia and every forest here is new, except for a small rainforest near a lake group. The lakes create a tropic like conditions that allow the rainforest to exist.
You get a big, big fine if you try and chop down a single tree.
@Cullen Achilles Would you fuckin slimeballs take your scams somewhere else, holy god man
World anvil sponsors almost every one of Nate’s videos
And thank goodness for that because otherwise I wouldn’t know it existed!
I come back to your map videos often when I'm drawing a map. I always ask myself "How would WASD20 draw this." Then I go look.
Me: **knows about the rain shadow from GCSE Geography**
"I am 4 parallel universes ahead of you"
9:16 "Hey thats my home :D" Hello from Czech Republic :D
Your maps look amazing Nate, love watching you draw them out and learned a lot from this. Great job!
Thank you for your videos its helping me make a board game about the 100 years war and years after it... Thank you!
The Appalachian Mountains in the United States is a good example of mountains that don't have much of a rain shadow, whereas the Rocky Mountains certainly do.
This are my fav type of trees! Like the Middle Earth ones, it’s hard to make them the right size, but yours look perfect! :)
Love your video's, you've become very good in video-making in a short time
Feels like forever since the last one. Thank you.
Aw man, this is very time consuming, but amazing and helpful! Thanks! Amazing job, and great and teaching, great at putting a lot of details, but yet keeping it short! Amazing!
Out of all the stuff I draw on my maps, the hardest is forests
When you mentioned "pokey thorn bushes that really hurt" I immediately thought of Coyote Peterson and that one time he landed on a goddamn Cholla Cactus. If you haven't seen the video, PLEASE Google it. The noises he makes could be used as legit Predator clicking soundbites. Great video, too! I'm running a fever and decided to watch your tutorials to relax. Map-making is so soothing!
Thanks. Hope you feel better!
Fantastic! I am making a map of my fantasy world watching each of these steps as I go :)
I was trying to draw maps to your video help me a lot. Thank you.
It would be awesome if you did a video on how to draw a tropical land map, with beaches and palm trees, tropical forests and last but not least indigenous settlements and ruins. I never saw it on UA-cam even though it's an amazing setting.
00:03 me when I'm in a forest and it gets dark outside
Personally I use clumps of forest for jungles and individual trees for coniferous forests
great tips guy! just came across this and its been very helpful
Awesome, this is so helpful! Thanks
Wow, VERY helpful stuff. Excellent work.
Thanks!
If you place the triangle trees towards the mountains and the circle trees away from the mountains and near rivers, would that give the effect of different areas having different climates?
I've got some catching up to do. I dislike how UA-cam only shows me what they want and not ALL I'm subscribed to.
That's why you gotta turn on the Bell Notification on your favorite UA-cam channels
I've made a modified version of your number 3 trees where I'll start the trees larger and progressively get both smaller and lighter (thinner lined). I'll also toss in an odd pine tree clump here and there. On the edges of the forest I'll put a few lone trees to indicate the thinning edge. Maybe you see if this way works for you, although it is time consuming.
Just subed this guy is awesome
Yes! Thank you
Really want more game play videos. Your maps are gorgeous as ever, but I would love to see some more on mechanics and game play for fifth ed. Maybe something on how to convert old modules to 5th ed.
Ty for these videoss!
You could do a book on fantasy maps
I’d like to!
Fantastic videos, looking forward to finishing my anti poverty game.
I’m Gonna try out dungeons and dragons with my friends soon, I’m the dm and this really helps shaping my world!
Magic may also make forests rare.
Zote
Why?
@@hectorvega621 it can make grasses harder to displace, or act like fallout, or make trees grow so much better that they evolved to be more reliant on it, or any number of other reasons.
Thanks man !!!
Any idea when you are releasing D&D school ep 3 combat? I think it will be really helpful and if its anything like the other two it will be enjoyable too.
12:49 Pause it, there is Shadow of Man on your neck Nate.
I live on the dessert part of the mountains I live near I went to the other side and I went so green
Hey great video, do you have any videos or know of any that show how to draw jungles or palm trees or tropical/Caribbean style trees.
for added realism, just... straight up glue some dead bugs on the forest areas to really sell the feeling
Pro tip for making jagged lines: a) already have shaky hands and b) draw while hiccupping. Jaggedness guaranteed 👍!
I fell on my ass laughing, love it lol
Thanks, amigo!
Hey @WASD20 how would you add a river of grass similar to the everglades in Florida on a map?
thank you, good sir
How would you go about making jungles
I was wondering if you had any way of creating flags for your nations on your map?
Try to make thinner lines for the borders and maybe try shields with the flag like EU4, or put the flag in a empty space
Watching this video and I feel the “I wanna make a map” spark again. Great vid as always.
What are you using to create the digital map when you were discussing the rain shadows? Some type of digital drawing pad?
Zach Noorman it's called photoshop where all the amateur artists draw besides let me explain studios
Morgan Pecukonis i meant what was he using to draw. Like a Wacom pad or just a mouse
I have a weird way of doing forests. I put like 4 medium sized trees and then a bunch of dashes to represent all the thousands of others.
Couldn't you have some small tress on the mountain sides?
Would this also work for a rainforest on a map?
no pencil to trace? absolute mad lad
Those pictures of forests disappearing are honestly really fucking sad.
Depends on per person a story to portrail in d
what pens are you using ?
The amount of forests for medieval era is actually not ALWAYS higher than today. Western Europe in 1300 had lost quite a lot of forest for fields and villages.
What if I want to put blue trees in?
I just finished drawing the trees and my wrist is killing me now
coool!!!!
I love these tutorial videos. The only downside is that we get only one every month. :)
Wait, really? I'm kinda new here, so I really don't know
@@thequietplayer6762
Yeah, he does other videos, which are equally interesting and almost always a review of a book or a product, but the map-related videos come usually once/month. They are worth the wait though and you can always check previous videos he has posted, which are great.
If your style dor trees arn't singular trees you can draw single trees to fill emp space
Question: You make money making maps for fantasy worlds and for your youtube channel?
I make money on UA-cam videos, and I occasionally do paid map commissions as well. These are both side gigs. I’m a high school teacher.
@@WASD20 ok thank you so much 🤩 looks like i have found a new hobby of mine XD (and thx for the quick response, love your voice XP)
How could I draw jungles?
I got a couple by now
Oh my world is around like ww1 time but no world war yet and still a lot of find and colonies but my world already knows all the geography’s except my second largest continent bc it’s a little bit to big
your website is still promoting a contest from 2016 on its front page boss
Yeah. Needs a bit of updating. :) I mainly just use it as a landing place for my map portfolio.
Boss
@@WASD20 love your work just thought I ought to mention in case it was an anomaly
Forests aren't naturally in/near Mountains, that's just the places where we humans didn't cut them down completly
Good point, though I never said they naturally occur there. I just said I like to put them there. It makes me happy.
Ok, sorry
No worries!
Bro this whole video I was panicking because your forgot to add a trunk on one of the trees and you put a shadow on a trunkless tree 😭😭
10:47 it’s one if the northern trees in the eastern forest of the big island
D&D Rules School episode 3 anytime soon?
Maybe? :)
i found g on ur map some o the lines mad to lines and a dot thats morse code for g
SellSwordMaps? WAIT, THATS ME-
Wouldnt wind go west, since the earth spins east, assuming this is based of earth
Wind is not affected by the way the planet spins.
@@WASD20Oh, you're right for the most part, but some stuff like the coriolis effect determines some wind but not dramatically. Also I love your videos, I've gotten so much better at my mountains and my volcanoes.
