The hugely important information here for workers, that is missing from this explanation, is that Gig Economy Employers are using the apps to create rules of employment that force these so-called "flexible" workers to act as though they were full employed people. Penalizing riders for missed shifts, late log-ins, working less time than scheduled (even though this employment is meant to be a pay per item, or pay per play model), makes workers pay for not operating withing a much different model that than what they "flexible" gig economy model was built on. This is the latest loophole employment model created to maximize profits for the employer and minimize benefits for the worker. Government has been slow to act on this emerging market, so this exploitation is even worse in developing nations. A rise in worker related injury, lack of collective bargaining, and easy termination of workers creates what we now call Precarious Work, as opposed to the corporate label, "Flexible work."
