- The opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics has kicked off at Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium. It is the first arena to host both a Summer and Winter Olympic opening ceremony.

Why not let the Athletes enjoy the games and the sports that their love, all the Athletes have trained so hard for the Olympic and have heen awaited for 4 long years for the game. The Olympic games are to encourage world peace, not war and hatreds toward each other yet the governments and media are the ones who encourage hatreds and war, how can the world be a peaceful place. It’s just incredibly spectacular opening ceremony & performance. It showcase to those silly petty narrow minded boycotting politicians the true and pure meaning of Olympic Games. The Olympic Touch in the heart of snow crystals with by the names of participating countries significantly portrayed the true spirit of Olympics regardless of country, race, language s or religions coming together to show their skills in friendly competitions. It also sent a clear message to the world that China welcome and respect all countries warmly without prejudice and its vision of working together with all nations together for a better tomorrow to all future generations. It also showcase the unity of the Chinese people, its creativity and application of advance technology. Looking forward to see yer another awesome closing ceremony. Even if the ceremony was a toned down version, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Zhang Yimou didn't dissapoint. With little he got he made a spectacular lightshow event, focusing not only on China, but including everyone on this planet, with a broader international theme.
Imagine if this was a full blown ceremony, with the talent of Zhang Yimou it would have been guranteed quality spectacle! My compliments Zhang Yimou! Thank you for giving us 2 splendid Olympic Ceremony shows, you have eternalized yourself with your artistic creativity!

This is a great opening ceremony with many original innovation . The ceremony falls on the day of start of spring , the countdown was designed with this theme , 24 solar terms from China’s lunar calendar. And the fire, it’s so carbon efficient , not grand but smart ! This ceremony definitely outplayed many previous ones , well done China.

Despite the politics, the ceremony was wonderful. Although, the Olympic flame-lighting was very underwhelming considering the grandeur of the 2008 lighting.
The director said in an interview ever since the 2008 Olympic he has been thinking how to make a greener flame if he were given the chance again. He wanted this ceremony to be more about we (all the people I guess) less about I (China). The delicate yet strong flame protected by snowflakes from all the participating countries is properly the message the artist wants to give to the world.

Open ceremony for Winter Olympic never can compete with Summer Olympic due to weather condition and it is generally smaller in scale and shorter in length.
