    I love the Dorian mode, but using it in this way sounds amazing. Not only does the dissonant bass actually work, it somehow sounds pretty and jarring at the same time.

    Thank you, it is great video!!! I think the real reason why D dorian compatible with the E flat note here, it's because D frygian mode is relative to E flat Lydian mode. Then you add Eb on the left side, you just turn your Dorian D into Frygian D/Lydian Eb. Your add the bass of Lydian Eb at the left and skip the other notes of this scale, the pentatonic D at the right also skiping part of the notes but our hearing senses the sound of the both scales which has a same notes. Its great movement, can be very useful, thanks.

      Thanks for your very enlightening comment! Notice in the song in the end of the lesson I have separated the tonalities further. In the bass I often add the perfect fourth and fifth compared to the bass key note - these notes are also very "off" compared to the Dorian tonality in the solo hand a half step below. So all the notes played in the bass and the solo hand are dissimilar! Not a singel note is the same. Totally we almost play the chromatic scale. I think that in the song we move away from the Lydian sound we may hear when just playing a single bass note. Again a very enlightening comment, thanks again, and I hope you can follow my drift regarding the song in the end of the lesson... Oliver

  • @MaggaraMarine
    @MaggaraMarine 5 років тому +3

    I hear it as a brighter "Lydian" chord. You basically have the colorful notes from the Eb Lydian scale (especially if you emphasize the notes in the Dm pentatonic - 3, maj7, 9, #11, 13 against Eb in bass), but you also have the #5 and the "#15". These notes don't necessarily even sound that dissonant against the bass note if played in higher register (and if played as a stack of thirds or fifths), it just sounds really "bright".

    This is excellent. I'm glad that UA-cam exists for all those demonstrations of modes which is useful for a keyboard player with admittedly limited training like myself. Long ago in my childhood I was taught piano but didn't even get as far as learning to play with two hands. Having composed electronic music for years it wasn't any problem but now that I'm in a rock band and practice regularly I'm starting to learn modes and other amazing things I never knew I could do.

    Wonderful video. I am having a blast watching this series; it is great food for my music theory brain, which is always hungry!! :D
    Also, I think that the gritty tone color of this technique is particularly effective because the tonic chord's perfect 5th forms a volatile tritone interval with the note one semitone down from the key's root. This "alien" clash really stands out and provides a unique sound at places like 10:00, where you play an A over an Eb to form the tritone!

    Hi Oliver for some reason I missed such a great lesson from your past. You are the “simplificator” among my UA-cam teachers, and the most humble of them all.
    Now as simplificator I would ask you a simple lesson on superimposed triads, for example C triad over Dm is Dm11, and if you put a G triad over B7 you have a beautiful B7 altered voicing. Your lesson on the subject would be a masterpiece I bet!

    Great lesson from an inspiring teacher. I was inspired by you to find a similar sound landscape that I really like. Think of the Kenny Barron Chord on D (D minor 7 voicing). Play stacked fifths in the LH (D, A, E) and play the F - pentatonic row starting thumb to thumb, E and F) The Thumb positions for the penta row equals the RH position for the Kenny Barron Chord. So the RH plays the pentatonic hand grip on F, C, and G, which equals the Dorian Scale. I like using this soundscape for tension. I find a nice relaxation sound by placing the RH penta grip on any note in the LH (D, A, E). The D Dorian sound is still spiced up by playing the E in the LH. If I leave the E out, then the whole soundscape becomes an awfully consonant D Dorian. Obviously, the voicing can be moved around. I like D to F and D to E so far. So thank you for the inspiration, Oliver! - Allen

    ing
    7:50 Reason #4
    - my opinion is why these pentatonics (and dorian) sound good. I think in terms of the major pentatonic scale.
    1) Ebm pent = D#m pent=F# maj pent
    F#/E is lydian Tonic (I maj7+11)
    2) Dm pent = F pent
    F is tritone substitution of the Dominant B7-5/D# (V alt /3).
    D#(enh Eb) - is leading-tone.
    F/D# is an altered dominant on seven degree of "tonality" .
    Dm dor = F lyd = B loc => B7alt
    /D#
    We have
    | F/D# | F#/E | or | B loc/D# | E maj7 lyd |
    or
    | Valt /3 | Imaj7+11 |
    ====
    In C: | G7alt/B (Bbm dor/B) | D/C (Bm pent/C)
    ====
    ... Although it looks like you have Eb as "tonic". Then these are two Maj7(+5) Lydian in the Phrygian context. )

      Thanks for great and very qualified input!!! Please notice that in the song (at the end of the lesson) the bass not only play the keynote a half step above the Dorian solo - the bass actually plays minor PENTATONIC a halv note above. So I actually play
      ||: Eb-Dorian/Emi-Penta D-Dorian/Ebmi-Penta :||
      So in the song there are no similar notes between bass and solo... everything is OFF so to speak.

      Thanks my friend :) Yes I agree, it is very interesting to explore non-diatonic sound landscapes! And the video above shows a very simple and primitive idea: letting the bass play off note!
      But I think it is necessary to make some structure and patterns in the solo-play to make it work, else it will just be chaos... that will occasionally also be OK ;)

    • @anthonymannino4648

      Wondered if those 2 patterns could be resolved to a tonic. That would finish the dissonance ? 😉

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 років тому

      AHHH - now I get it, sorry that I'm a little slow... This is a very good and interesting question. Thanks :)
      Well, playing Eb Dorian with the "e" note in the bass we can for example resolve to the Eb minor chord just by lowering the bass note a half step. That a very logic and clear resolution, try it out :) In the lesson/song I actually move the bass a half note down to "eb" to resolve the sound, but then I CHEAT and move the Dorian scale down a half step as well - in that way the resolution is displaced or offset - if you can follow me. So we never reach the resolution to the tonic and we have a everlasting sound of suspension.

    • @vladimirkalichuk9593
      @vladimirkalichuk9593 4 роки тому

      @@NewJazz I would say that Eb dorian over E sounds best when resolved to Eb (Ebmaj7), instead of Ebm. Of course it is a matter of personal preference.

      @NewJazz  6 років тому +1

      Hi and thanks :) In the solo I constantly play a minor pentatonic hand grip with the thumb on a pentatonic keynote. The pentatonic hand grips are placed in many different tonalities. Sometimes I slide a tritone blue note... Kind regards Oliver

    As in all your Videos I really like what the bass sounding Keyboard is doing being a Bass Player myself- I would be proud to sound like that. I was wondering if you could expand a bit on what's going on with the bass notes. Apart from using root and fifth, Is this applying the same technique of using Pentatonic chains to construct the fills?

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 років тому

      In this song I think mostly in key, fourth, fifth and octave. Sometimes I add the minor seventh. So the tonal material in the bass is simple and open - it gives me more freedom to play the piano solo... So in this song I do not use the pentatonic chain in the bass. I remember that I tried, but everything got too messy ;) I hope you can use my answer ;) Best regards Oliver

      LOL. You also need a bass player to give you the displaced key note to make the sound ;)

  • @T4Cification
    @T4Cification 7 років тому

    Would the fact you played all 4 notes next to each other in the same frequency range rather than when you play the dorian up and down the keyboard with the bass static in the lower octaves, therefore giving you wider range of notes over a much greater frequency range, not help open up space and make it all sound a lot better....than just 4 notes played next to each..

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  7 років тому

      Yes, I think you are right. Spreading the Dorian out in nice pentatonic hand grips and playing the bass in much lower frequency all help us ;)

    Doesn't shifting the base down a half step just make it sound phrygian?

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  5 років тому

      Hi :) If we play Dorian and move the bass note up a whole-step we will have the Phrygian scale, that's correct. For example; if we play D Dorian (all the white keys) and move the bass note up to the E note, then we have the E-Phrygian (still all the white keys). But in the video we move the bass note up a HALF step, not a whole-step ;) But maybe you are thinking about something else??? Feel free to elaborate if so ;) Best regards Oliver

      Yes, the c major or d dorian scale is the same keys - but a very different sound ;)

    What is the Chord name? What is the Key? Dm/Eb??

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  6 років тому

      Yes - Or we could name the chords after the modes they have been derived from. So the chord progression is:
      ||: Eb-Dorian/e | D-Dorian/eb :||
      We could also write it in more traditional terms:
      ||: Ebmi13/e | Dmi13/eb :||
      And yes, I also hear the main key as "D-Dorian/eb". This is also the final chord in the song. But this song is so 'way out' that it's hard to define any key...

    Would that be dorian flat 2 from melodic minor?

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  4 роки тому

      We hear D Dorian with Eb in the bass. Well, it could also be "D Dorian b2" (with b2 in the bass) - but then we must add the Major second step as well, the e-note...

      Hi :) Can you elaborate a little :) Cheers from Oliver

    • @gastonblue4659
      @gastonblue4659 3 роки тому

      @@NewJazz Well E dorian is second of D so no way of using as Bass F, but Em pentatonic with F as bass it looks Lidian. contain all notes of a Lidian mode. It seems.

    • @gastonblue4659
      @gastonblue4659 3 роки тому

      Actually I love how it sounds.

    • @NewJazz
      @NewJazz  3 роки тому

      @@gastonblue4659 Exactly!!! E-Dorian/F is way off any well-known scale; it's not diatonic. And yes Emi-penta/F gives us the F-Lydian scale, except we miss the 5th step. But we hear the bright augmented 4th step that characterize the Lydian sound. Cheers from Oliver
