In Mexico we believe a person doesn't die when their body dies they die when they are forgotten. That is why it is important to tell the stories of our ancestors and the ones we love. There are so many famous Mexican celebrities that have passed away at Ernesto's party

Coco had Alzheimer’s/Dementia. It’s why she got Miguel’s name wrong in the beginning, forgot who her own daughter was, and zoned out when Miguel was trying to talk to her in the end.
When he played the song, it gave her a moment of clarity. That was both beautiful and sad. 🥺
Yes, you should see video of people in similar conditions react to music from their youth/childhood and how that clarity comes out.
My grandma had dementia with aphasia (she didn't speak because she couldn't remember words) but she could still sing along with the songs she knew. Music was the one thing that always reached her.

It reminds of a ideo of an old woman who had Dementia and was a ballerina in her youth. And as soon as they played swan lake she didn't only hum to the song, but she started dancing to it with the same movements. It was very beautiful to see how music can unlock certain things or even how ur body still remembers certain movements after a long time of not doing it ❤️

I think Hector didn't intend to abandon his family forever--she didn't want him to go at all (and who could blame her?), but in his mind, he was going on a tour, from which he'd return. Except that he didn't, because de la Cruz killed him and never even made up a cover story for his wife and child. (How hard would it have been for him to feed Imelda the same story he spread around the land of the dead, about food poisoning? But instead, he destroyed her by letting her think that, because she objected to his tour, Hector had abandoned her permanently.)
In my head canon, in the scene at the beginning (spoilers ahead for anyone reading comments) where Miguel tells Hector that he's De La Cruz's great great grandson, Hector stops to think about it, like "I know that man didn't have children, maybe after I died?" so he goes with it in his desperation to get his photo on an offrenda.
Im Mexican and im from Michoacan the birthplace of this tradition. The tradition is you put up your loved ones photo and you put things they liked in the living world. You can put their favorite foods and play music they enjoyed. At midnight you talk to your loved ones like they are really there standing in front of you. Talk to them about your life , whats been happening. Then , as tradition goes they take what you brought them and they take it back with them to enjoy in the afterlife. In Mexico death is celebrated and as long as you're alive in someone's thoughts or memories, you're never truly dead. Death is just seen as a step from this world to another.
The birthplace of the tradition is from anywhere around central/southern Mexico from indigenous people, it's not specific to one state. For example, Day of the Dead is really popular in Oaxaca as well but I wouldn't call it the "birth place" of the tradition. I would say that the birth place is Mesoamerica in general.
@@hueyitlahtoani9242 the birthplace is central mexico for this day of the dead in this movie. Oaxaca day of the dead is a little different. And this movie takes inspiration from Guanajuato(the jorge negrete statue, that resembles de la cruz) also plaza Garibaldi and Michoacan Janitzio cemetery. And there are many other refrences to mexico city. Adding all that, this movie takes place in a fictional city combining Michoacan , Guanajuato and Mexico city.
@@JesuZeus the movie incorporated parts of oaxacan culture. The song "La llorona" originated in Oaxaca. The style of the alebrijes are Oaxacan. They were made out of paper mâché by pedro linares in Mexico city who then introduced them to Oaxaca where they used wood to carve them out and decorate them with oaxacan art styles. The clothes that they are wearing in Miguel's town was said to be inspired by Oaxacan style mandiles, blouses and clothes by the creators themselves. They even made a behind the scenes video and their main place of inspiration was that of Oaxaca. The shoe shop and tradition was based off a Oaxacan shoe maker and his family. Pantheons can also be seen in Oaxaca too, not just in Michoacan. So again, it isn't based off of one state but multiple with it's main inspiration being that of Oaxaca since the creators stayed there with Oaxacan families.

And all the famous mexican celebrities featured are not from oaxaca. Like pedro infante, cantinflas and frida kahlo . Oaxaca has a different tradition that is not in this movie. As mexican i know the oaxacan tradition and this movie doesn't represent that.
@@JesuZeus You can literally search up the origin of "la llorona." it originated in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca which was then modified by Andres Henestrosa who was also Oaxacan. Frida Kahlo is known for wearing Oaxacan style dresses like the Tehuana which also originated in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Her dress in the movie is also a Tehuana. Krida Kahlo's mother, Matilde Calderon is from Oaxaca which inspired her to wear Tehuana dresses which is her "iconic" look. Like I said, the movie incorporates different cultures from different states in Central/Southern Mexico with it's base in Oaxaca because the creators literally stayed there for days. To say the movie "takes place in Michoacan, Guanajuato, and Mexico city" without mentioning Oaxaca makes your overall statement false when the movie clearly took lots of inspiration from Oaxaca considering that the creators went there.
So far ur the only reactor who remembered Pepita’s name cuz at the part where Miguel got thrown off the roof, every other reactor would be like, “Where’s the flying jaguar thing?” 😂😂😂

Coco is truly beautiful, when i watched not even one dry eye was seen at that room. Great reaction. Many years before Coco, i read a book about this, about the idea that you only truly die once the last person who remembers and/or knew you die, as you're finally forgotten...and it always stuck with me, the final death.
I'm a 46 year old man and the first time I watched these movie many things about it made me emotional. I've seen it a few times now and I don't get that emotional anymore. Except for that one part. That one still gets me every time. The concept that you still exist somewhere somehow while you are still remembered by someone until finally no one does and then you cease to exist in any way. It just makes me wonder how long I will be remembered when I leave this world and by whom

I saw this in the theater. I was seated next to a young Latino man, around early to mid-20s. He was rapt throughout, and, at one point, he was crying his heart out.
My husband and I had both recently lost parents when this came out (his by a few years, mine by a few months) and we both just sobbed at the end. We weren't the only ones.

The first death is when our bodies cease to function; when our hearts no longer beat of their own accord, when our gaze no longer has depth or weight, when the space we occupy slowly loses its meaning. The second death comes when the body is lowered into the ground, returned to mother earth, out of sight. Yes, we have celebrations at the cemetery, have food and some drinks with our relatives that have passed away. It’s not a somber event, but a happy time to laugh about the good times and enjoy life. We have parades and games too. It’s not a time to mourn.
And the spirits don’t need to bring food back to the land of the dead, they want to. They see their living relatives and bring back the gifts.

I cried with you. I do it every time I see this movie. My 3 yo nephew died in a car crash almost 20 years ago so it always gets me when I see the "dead" children in the spirit world.

They don't need to have an offering to get back, it's more like if you travel and you bring back something from your trip you may need to declare it in customs. The big thing is someone in the living world needs to have put up their photo for them to be allowed to cross over in the first place.
You don't have to come back, but the families put offerings on the ofrendas and at the graves. It's usually foods that the dead family members liked in life. For example, one of my grandfathers really liked blueberries, and I might put blueberry pie or blueberry cheesecake for him. The offerings are because we believe that they come back on those days to be with us, and take their offerings. It's also a time to remember them, by telling stories about them in life. The stories might be kinda funny... like, one of my favorites about my guelita (abuelita), is when I was watching a kung fu movie with her, and suddenly (this is Don "the Dragon" Wilson) the actor takes his shirt off, and he's all muscular, and stuff, and she starts doing this little slow, seated shimmy, and said, "Work it, Baby." I was shook. lol But, it's probably one of my fondest memories of her. As long as we remember them, they stay "alive" in the afterlife. The gate that they're all passing through is a parody of the border crossing locations, between Mexico and the U.S..
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but there are actually a lot of Easter egg characters in the land of the dead. El Santo (the wrestler), for example, was a luchador (Mexican masked wrestler) had a bunch of movies, he was basically like a superhero. Yes, that was Frida Kahlo (and the male who was painting the naked skeleton was her husband, Diego Rivera). There was also famous singers and actors from Mexican media, Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Cantinflas, and Maria Felix. Emiliano Zapata was also in it, he was a Mexican Revolutionary.
The big about the chorizo and them laughing at him about it, Mexicans like a good naughty joke, and chorizo, in this case, they're joking about him basically choking on a penis (chorizo being a sausage). It's pretty normal to make inappropriate jokes about sausages, tacos, etc.
I loved your video, you understood the whole movie very well and you expressed it that way. I thank you as a Mexican who has always had this tradition but not everyone understands it,, and although you don’t have the same tradition, you managed to understand the heart of what the Día de Muertos is and that is not understood by everyone (who’s not Mexican). Of all the videos that I have seen of this movie, you are the one that has interpreted it best and that is because you do have the intention of understanding and enjoying what you are seeing and not just to gain viewers or followers. And you understood why Imelda hated music, that was not for selfishness or pleasure but because the person she loved the most and who was going to be her life partner left her because of his dreams, however she also had dreams but decided to stay with her daughter Coco. The wonderful thing about this movie is that it makes you think about your own family and what they had to do to keep it together and that our love ones who pass away always are going to be alive in our hearts and memories.

Yes. It's Dia de Los Muertos. They celebrate the lives of the dead, and It's a happy time for them, as opposed to Halloween in the U.S. (which, don't get me wrong, I love Halloween, but it focuses more on the creepy factor)
Thank you for watching this movie! Dia de Muertos is for everyone not just for us Mexicans. On November 2nd put out the pictures of your loved ones that have moved on and light a candle for them. Tell their stories and share them with those who we are still blessed to have around us. It's also a great time to talk to them. Not only do they hear us but they appreciate the opportunity to spend time with us as much as we want to spend time with them. Our loved ones do come back. You know they are there when the candles don't want to be put out. Their living bodies might have run their time on this Earth but their spirit and their memory will never die as long as we keep passing on their legacy from generation to generation.

About 3 years ago, I helped my son build a large wagon for Halloween with bright yellow, green, red and colored Mexican banners all around with 2 seats for the children and had pictures of my mom & dad, and other relatives that have passed. We had imitation candles all around to illuminate the pictures, especially in the back, with the music from COCO playing as we went Trick or Treating with the 2 children. People took pictures, prayed, gave offerings (candy) and even cried. The children and all of us were dressed like the Characters in COCO.
30:50 chorizo is a Mexican sausage eaten as tacos or for cooking, he was blaming his death on bad chorizo to mask the true reason for his death: poisoned tequila.
I know what it feels like to lose my father. I’ve lost track of how many loved ones who have died.

What a nice reaction...I have always said that "Coco" is one of the best animated movies produced by Disney, and it will be tough to top (I will always have a special place in my heart for "Aladdin" as my number one, thought). It's easily a top 5, if not a top 3, for me. And if you don't tear up at multiple points of this movie, I question that person's humanity. And the focus on family is such a refreshing change from where our society is heading. It just hits so many great points, and there is so much growth in so many of the characters.

And I’d ask my dad about my grandpa who died when I was month old. The way I see it memories are more than stories, they’re lessons left for us to pass on to the next generation. ❤️

I am so grateful I found your channel! I really love and appreciate the way you take the time to try to understand and infer as you go along to really capture the movies you are watching. I find a lot of reactors watch just to make jokes but they fall short a lot because they miss the context because they don’t really pay attention to the story/details.
Btw I do love comedic reactions too! Lol Just wish more thought went into the jokes sometimes bc context is super important, especially with movies like this, Encanto, or Moana that have a lot of cultural significance to it as well. Jokes hit a lot better when they are informed lol

random thought.. coco is a retelling of the wizard of oz... think about it.. its the story of a kid and their dog crossing a golden road into a magical land.. befriending a scarecrow like character.. being chased by an evil woman with a winged pet.. trying to get to a powerful man in a castle who can get them home.. and he turns out to be a fake

When it comes to animated movies, "Song of the sea" is a must see. Also "Spirited Away" which might open your mind to anime, which has much to offer.
I'd suggest all three of the Irish company that did "Song of the Sea", like "Secret of Kells"and "Wolfwalkers".

The day of the dead is celebrated on all Spanish speaking countries, in El Salvador we celebrate it too.
Day of the Dead is specific to Mexico only for the most part and comes from the indigenous people of central/southern Mexico. All Spanish speaking countries celebrate All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day aka Dia de todos los santos and dia de los difuntos which is the Catholic holiday.

Hi! I was listening to your intro and your thoughts on first time reactions. You know, some of us watch your chanel because we are looking forward to rewatching and connecting with you. Perhaps the idea of rewatching you rewatching a movie is something to be looking forward to. I don't understand the 1st time viewling thing a 100% because yes, you will miss things even though you are very good at picking up a lot. But for me the pleasure multiplies by knowing what is going to happen and understanding the story better to really get to the happiness or sadness, anger or even joy.

You're very observant! I saw the twist where Hector was the Great-Great Grandfather too, but for a different reason. For me, it was the surety with which Miguel declared that he was the great-great grandfather, but they were being WAY too careful not to show any images or flashbacks, or have anyone actually mention him by name, so I was like "... There's gotta be a twist here..." and there was really only one other dead male major character, so...lol

The sad thing is that Imelda is wrong. Hector never abandoned her and their daughter. He was a musician and went on tour and always intended to come back, but was murdered by his best friend before he could come home. And then De La Cruz never even bothered to tell Imelda that Hector had died, so she believed he'd left them and decided to never come back, choosing music over his family.
I think you are missing the fact that she didn't want him to leave to begin with - of course anyone in her shoe would think she was abandoned.

Thank you so much for watching. So if you look at the very beginning - you can clearly see that his wife did not want him to go. So leaving in that moment was enough to make any wife think - he had chosen his passion over his family. A number of people forget that the story in the pictures at the very beginning showed her opinion about him leaving.

I was with you until you went on your rant about Hector abandoning his family, even after it was obvious he was murdered. It spits in the face of all fathers who sacrifice and work endless hours away from home to support their families. Understanding Imelda has to be balanced exactly by understanding Hector.
