I was at this show--it was June 1982 at the Captiol Theater in Passaic New Jersey. It was amazing--I was too young to appreicate it at the time.

The original Blues Brothers. Had the great fortune to see them live at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town, London, back in the 1980s.

I am Suzanne's husband, but I'm using her tablet to post. Suzanne was with me my entire music career. I'm 67 and still playing the blues as Chicago Mad Dog & The Bad Dogs out of Los Angeles. Watch for our CD, DVD s and live shows coming soon to a location near you.

Having played bass with them a few times was awesome. I also enjoyed watching them argue backstage. They broke up one night in Redondo Beach, CA. when Buddy dropped acid and became Jimi Hendrix reincarnated and blew the roof off the place. Buddy walked out on the pier ad libbing.
Junior asked me "What the fuck is he doing? ". I said "Sounds like VOODOO CHILD to me, and I should probably join him", so I did and Junior drew the song out for about 45 minutes of killer guitar work. I had a lot of fun, but Junior went ballistic on Buddy and quit. I was just sitting there smoking a joint with both of them.
They got back together again at a later point.

+Suzanne Hankins I envy you. My best friend and I went to interview Junior for our high school newspaper, in either 68 or 69. Junior was a sweetheart. We were talking to him between sets, and he was having such a great time seeing a couple of high school kids get excited about the blues, he kept us thewre and let the band play for a while before thanking us and heading out to the stage. Great guy. I miss him.

It's great to the Junior Wells videos from the 60's - 90's. I saw Junior several times while I lived in Chicago in late-80's. He embodies the Chicago blues harp style. Awesome!

In 1978 The Checkerboard Lounge was a warm and friendly dump of a bar. Bare lightbulb hanging from a wire over a foldout card table, and toilet that badly needed to be power washed, long tables in front of stage in a small room (this is before it seemed to get expanded -- in 1981 or so when it was filled with U of Chicago kids, and even had a hot table with food). Junior's place was Theresa's (sorry I never got there!) but he would show up at Buddy Guy's Checkerboard often, a special not-so-surprising guest. Oh, and sitting at the little card table was Johnny Dollar, Phil Guy and many other of the greatest blues men in history - the inventors of and exemplars of the Chicago style. And who was that lunatic who while playing would walk outside the club, still wailing? Good times!

Mick Taylor showed up Albert King in the same concert on a Stormy Monday song. Maybe Buddy Guy was saying, "hey, this is my time."
Albert King might not be up there with Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and the likes, but he still proves to be a great bluesman!

  • @oker59
    @oker59 11 років тому +1

Junior Wells, the original John Mayall. John can equal Junior on the Harmonica, but the singing belongs to Junior; Mayall has the keyboard also.
The contrast between Buddy Guy/Junior Well's Hoodoo Man and John Mayall's bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton is interesting; ultimately, their two different albums - both great.
This video is of the same concert John Mayall played Stormy Monday with Albert King. You can tell by the clothes John Mayal is wearing.

As reverential as he is about this music, John Mayall must have had a ball here, with these two.
(What a great document of the late Junior Wells as a performer.)
Mick Taylor had been with Mayall's Bluesbreakers, having succeeded Peter Green, who had succeeded Eric Clapton, then he left to join the Rolling Stones (upon the occasion of Brian Jones' untimely demise), and then he came back to Mayall...
And here he is, looking over Buddy Guy's shoulder...
...and here he is, attending GRAD SCHOOL.
