The EASIEST Way To Clean A Chainsaw

- HI everyone join me in today's video as I show you what I think is the easiest way to clean a chainsaw! I used my pancake compressor with a air chuck to blow away and clean all the areas of the saw. Ive used rags before, brushes, spray cleaners, etc... but I always go back to the compressed air! Its especially handy to get the grove of the bar. A couple areas you need to pay attention too when cleaning are as follows:
1. Bar groove (top and bottom)
2. Oiler hole on bar (both sides)
3. Sprocket nose (grease hole)
4. Air filter (LOW PSI + blow across the filter)
5. Blow off oil and gas caps (So nothing falls in when open)

What a good idea.👍🏻 I have been using a parts cleaner brush ( no more ) I also have a compressor like yours, never thought about using it for the saw, go figure! Great video bro!✌🏻️
Hey Alan! Compressed air is a lot cheaper than cleaner LOL just wear safety goggles (obviously)! Youll never go back, I always used cleaners or old gas and this way is so much faster and doesn't use any chemicals! Id get an air chuck with a rubber nose like mine had! its a tad flexible which helps clean the odd areas!

Dude! This is totally awesome! I have a small compressor and that blower part and my chain and saw are SO DIRTY! When I had them sharpen the chain I asked them to clean it and they didn't. I kept looking and found you! Blessings! I don't like using chemicals much. All the others required lots more chemicals. Yay! I think I will put a tarp down underneath.

The first time I did this I was covered head to foot with chainsaw goo. I was thinking,”Now what?!” Then it occurred to me to just blow MYSELF off with the blow nozzle. Perfect! 👍

Hey Martin! My Kubota needs the pressure washer LOL! Shes still dirty haha unfortunately its been to cold to wash her!
Blow it off with a compressor after every use and you’ll be very happy. Been doing this for a while and it’s definitely the best. Wipe off the big stuff, spray on cleaner/degreaser, let soak for a few minutes, then have at it.
Get a blow gun it’s much more ergonomic.

I am currently in the middle of a complete rebuild on a Husqvarna 445 new ring and all new seals I have it completely tore down. I will try this tomorrow.

Hello Jay, That's the same way I clean mine too. On the front like you have there,use that grease injection tool after you put the chain back on. I'm pretty sure you already do that anyway. Have you ever used that Pfeiffer chain sharpener? It sharpens the chain and rakers at the same time. I tried one yesterday and it took me a couple of links to get the hang of it, but after that, in no time I was done. That saw cut the best since the chain was new. Just be sure to get the .325 setup. There are a lot of setups out there that folks like probably just as well, but I was impressed with this one. Its made in Germany and I think they are the people that makes Stihl's sharpener. We got snow coming this afternoon.
Hey Bruce! Thanks for coming by! I use the world famous plastic syringe to inject grease LOL which works perfect believe it or not. Ive heard of those "2 in 1" sharpeners and was curious to see how they would work! If you say they work great then I take your word for it, I trust you! Hey SEK! I cant really say when and how often I clean it! It depends on what im actually cutting and what not! I just make sure my oiler doesnt clog up! Thats KEY to make sure the oil port on both sides of the bar dont get clogged. No oil is no fun! Thanks for tuning in!

Good reminder. I should clean my bars, I actually haven't blown them out in a while and I bet I have some junk built up behind the sprocket by now.
Hey Dave! Yes its good to clean the bar groove to bare nothing, you dont want to limit oil up to the sprocket nose!

I'll have to give the bar some extra attention this time! I usually pay more attention to the saw body itself
Thanks for the video,. How come you engage the choke when blowing out behind the air filter? Thanks.
Pulling the choke closes the flap in the carb so its good practice to help keep any extra wood chips or dust out when you are cleaning your machine! If you blow out the area where the carb is ALWAYS have the choke pulled and also cover the intake opening with your thumb or something!

That’s the easiest, cleanest way to quickly and thoroughly clean a saw in my experience plus I love not using chemicals when I don’t have to

That's how I do it also. I should do it after each use. But, I'm just so tired after cutting firewood all I can think of is crashing in a chair. What is the largest diameter tree trunk you have had to cut through? I've got to cut one up that is probably 5 ft across and it's going to be a challenge since I don't have gigantic saw.
Hey Rob! Thanks for tuning in! Glad you do the same thing, ive tried other methods and I feel this works the best! I do agree cleaning the saws is something noone looks forward too but I dont mind cleaning its sharpening that sucks LOL! Id rather blow the saw clean than sharpen if I had to pick lol. The largest tree ive cut believe it or not has been only about 30 inches! A lot of the trees in NH are not like out west with the massive cedars the reach the heavens haha. Do you have to drop the tree or are you just cutting the trunk?
@@HomesteadJay Just cutting it up. It broke off in a storm and knocked down some other trees. So, I'm doing the smaller stuff first and even some of that is getting kind of heavy. Then I have to attack the main trunk.
If lacking a compressor in the field, could spraying it down with brake cleaner be a good alternative?
That won’t remove the grit.
Agreed Trey! But Id say the best bet in field would be some gas/wire brush! Gas is a great cleaner! I keep a wire brush in my field kit so if I get clogged up I can scrub it (most times the oil hole in the bar clogs) I use a small pick to clean that out!
I do the same thing. For the air filter you split it in half, there are tabs on the front of it that are there to help take the filter apart. By splitting the filter in half you can also clean the fines out of the inside of the filter, another little trick if you are finding lots of fines in the neck of the carb and the filter(which these echos are known for) is to put a little bit of grease where the filter rests on the carb because they leak right there. I also pull the choke before I start cleaning a saw of to keep any debris from getting in the filter adapter/carb, when saws get a little bigger your thumb won't cover them well, but that's a nice trick to have in my tool box :).
When I'm cutting pitchy softwoods I spray my saws down before I start and after every tank with wd40, I also spray them down with it if its raining and after I use them in the rain. I wouldn't recommend spraying compressed air into the bar tip grease hole as you are pushing debris into the bearings, just blow over it and leave it be.
Keep them clean and keep them cutting buddy.

I learned the hard way about WD40 after one of my first tree jobs cutting up wet twisted pine lol the bar and inside cover were LOADED with sap and build up haha Ive done the WD since pending what I am cutting so good call there! @@HomesteadJay that's why I save the stihls for cutting pitchy wood lol. Another tip is to use a little heat, a heat gun works well, heating the sap up can help a lot.
Take a look at the front edge of the filter, on that style filter there are 4 little tabs(many only have 2), I think those will open easily without using a screwdriver or a swrench.

Jay, what is the name of the tool you use at the end of your compressor hose to direct the flow of air?
Its just a "air hose nossle" its a quick connect nozzle. you can get anywhere. Walmart, amazon, homedepot etc..

Hey Adam! That’s a lot of money for cans of air and they don’t last long. I’d just get a wire brush to clear the gunk out under the side cover and bar using that! That’s what I do out in field
That is how I clean my saws. I always clean them at the end of each season and a couple of times in between as needed. I cut a lot of wood and my saws get dirty.

I just got a Dewalt 165 psi 6-gallon pancake compressor specifically for this purpose. At max psi it still did not have the power to clean the chainsaw oil/wood chip gunk, no where near like in the video. Any idea why? I'm new to air compressors. It didn't feel like 165 psi though. Thanks.
Turn your regulator up! It may have full air in it but there’s a knob right up front that regulates the pressure. Turn it to the + to get full air power.
@@HomesteadJay Thanks for the quick reply. I did have the regulator all the way up to 165. I figured out the problem though after watching your video again. I know this is dumb, but it's the first time I ever used a compressor. I was trying to spray air out of an adapter at the end of the hose. As wide as that opening is, you don't get much pressure. So I used the black nozzle with a pinpoint hole, similar to what you have on your video, and it worked fine. Thanks again.
Thats ok im glad you got it figured out! Make sure you wear safety glasses when blowing off the saw! Make sure you get the oiler hole and bar groove clean! The air works perfect for that!

Dewalt pancake compressor! Works good and is portable!
I have a saw that hasn't been used in a year. No gas in it .What can I do to get it started
Pull it over a few times slowly. Put some fresh fuel and oil mix in it and see if it starts!
Jay at what psi did you set your compressor too?
Hey Al! I use full psi to clean the power head and bar BUT I reduce it to about 15-20 for the air filter! Make sure you tone it down for the air filter or it will blow right through it!

Not so much but kerosene or diesel works too. Obv wear proper safety gear if working with fuels to clean. I use old gas and it cuts the sap very well

Besides air duster, I don’t have compressed air. I guess next best thing is cleaning chemicals and a pressure washer
Not pressure washer. Use old gas and a small metal wire brush. The gas will cut the sap and buildup. Obv wear gloves and safety glasses

"easiest" way?! spends ages on it... imagine doing it every time you garden... 3 times a day, in a business.... nope. You'd never earn. spray with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, to disinfect between gardens... THAT is the easiest way!!
