    I have the constable and blew the fuse on it accidentally by plugging in wrong power supply into it...emailed simon and had answer by the next day and issue was corrected, my error was noted with power supplies and found correct power supply. GREAT customer service and GREAT preamp/pedal. Using it right now with Pathfinder 15 (i know solid state BUT fantastic pedal platform and clean sound) into a 12 inch jenson P12Q. Wonderful sound. Toss in a drive pedal and the reverb on Vox P15

    Still remember very fondly when I called Kingsley a few years back to order some pedals, and it was Simon on the phone! Had a great quick chat, ordered three pedals from the best pedal maker out there. Feels like have to have a Harlot as well so likely will make the call again soon! Thanks for the show gentlemen!

    Glenn's context is in metal. Where the amount of gain is much greater than where Dan and Mick play at. The more gain, the less the individual components have an effect on overall tone. Glenn's point is the object creating the sound, the speaker, has the greatest effect on tone.

  • @Youtubemademeaddahandle
    @Youtubemademeaddahandle 16 днів тому

    Yes! Relative tonal characteristics always are qualified by the interaction of components. It's always about the relationship and contribution of each to the whole. Each amp is remembered for the result of its systemic interactions. Electric guitar playing is remembered for its resultant invocation to the listener as the artist interacts with the system(s) utilized for that session - live or recorded. There is "life" in the playing of an "artist" even with the small audience of a recording session. The "artist" is always aware of the value of reception (as yet only assumed) regardless of the "size" of the listening pool at the current offering. The preceding statement may shed some light on reports of venue experiences where the "band" is not deterred by the relative quantity of listeners in the room.

    Love when Simon drops by to, with British-Canadian politeness, provide strong opinions based on facts. VCQ Theme 06/10/2024: Opinion vs. Fact. While everyone is entitled to an opinion (reflecting feelings, preferences, beliefs, interpretations, etc.), not all opinions are valid when erroneously elevated to fact (objective, measurable, reproducible, verifiable, predictive, etc.). My opinion that ”Rosewood fretboards sound better” is not the same as “Rosewood is different from Maple” (audible, tactile vibration, stickiness, durability, etc.). Equally, citing another’s subjective opinion ("Mick said...") does not make my subjective opinion more valid/factual. Anyway, in my opinion, a future definition of Alexander Pope’s “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing” will include dates referring to our current times (Notice: ‘a’ not ‘the’ future definition…). 😆

    Mick, if you were referring to my recent recommendation for Harley Benton cabs, I just consider it a matter of cost vs benefit. You are right that we or mics are more likely to hear cabinet panel resonances as the speaker to cabinet distance ratio increases, but less so if a cabinet is covered with vinyl. Plain old white pine is supposed to have a very nice resonance quality. Lightweight enough to be audible, and not enough upper midrange to sound raspy. That would be worth trying at some point. There's a 1x12 cab design called "AX84" you can build yourself that's intended for Greenback style speakers (not Blues or V30s). For better bass from a 1x12 cab, it would be a good candidate for a 100W Weber Ceramic 1230-55 or Legacy 12 55Hz-- cheaper than a Celestion G12H30-55Hz, and more options to choose from (the 100W versions have an Aluminum voice coil to sound like the 30W versions) -- doping, cone & dust cap type, and magnet size. FI, you could go with a 40oz magnet with the Ceramic Legacy 12 55Hz cone for a more "syrupy" high-end. The 1230-55 has a cloth surround that softens the 2.5~3.5kHz a bit. I wouldn't go with less than the 50oz magnet with it, but would choose Pre-Rola doping. Some may find it not bright enough if you consider a 75Hz Greenback or Blue a reference. Mixing them is a good option.

    My late 90s Roland BC-60 has a knob for blending in pre-amp into effects return as needed. This may be a singularly unique feature which I've found very useful when effects are more desirable than drive. I do have to step up to the amp control panel, however, to make that selection. This relieves me being tempted to tweak drive settings.

    On the Glenn Fricker comments, I think that there is a distinction to be made between somebody saying that wood, pickups, scale length, construction, anything, doesn’t “make a difference”. Saying something doesn’t “make a difference” and saying that something is “not different” are not the same thing. It doesn’t make a difference to the audience whether I play through a Marshall JCM800 or a Victory Super Sheriff. But there is a difference in sound.
    Glenn mixes a lot of different styles of metal music, and so the important thing is that the song sounds good and is well recorded. The specifics of the gear make no difference in that setting when the goal is not to have the best “tone”. The goal is to capture the best performance and make that the focus.
    Just my rambling thoughts. 😁

    • @GCKelloch
      @GCKelloch 16 днів тому

      I have to admit, Glenn has grown on me. Not so much as a primary source for audio elated knowledge, but I appreciate his purpose to save us some money above all. Over the years he's softened his opinion somewhat on what he feels matters in a guitar sound, whereas he even essentially ignored the results of some of his own tests in the past. Yes, the loudspeaker matters most to the tone, but not only tone that matters.
      Funny that he is so adamant about not wasting money on things that barely make an audible difference, yet he just spent ~$100k on a Neve console, the difference in results from which could possibly be better achieved with a set of free digital plugins -- FI, the AirWndows 'Console 8' suite for console channel & buss interaction "glue" (with the added bonus of freq overlap distortion build up reduction for better clarity), and something like the Analog Obsession 'PreBox' for channel preamp coloration options. Variety Of Sound has some stellar transformer effects and rack compression unit emulations. Again, all free.

    In the 80's the piano designers from Yamaha told me that wood can vibrate and add energy but wood also absorbs sound. In the case of the PU only picking up what it gets from the strings wood can absorb sound and deny it from sending it to the PU's.
    The aluminum pick guard may be insulating the wood from taking the amount or the assortment of frequencies reaching the PU's.
    Add to that then different kinds of woods will absorb and hence rob the PU's of different frequencies being amplified.

  • @Youtubemademeaddahandle

    I'm still waiting for the digital tube to replace the vacuum ones. I doubt that it will ever really happen. In the meantime I'm required to embrace digital technology (or cope with it) as I may (out of necessity). The best of both (or as many as may be involved) is my aim in all that I do. At times only a un-plugged acoustic is capable to "reset". Imperceptible latency may,, someday, be married to sonic qualities and allow a level of compatibility not yet achieved between digital and analog approaches.

    Again, Aluminum (which is paramagnetic) around the pickups generates a low level magnetic feild the same polarity as the flux lines from the strings driving it. That creates eddy currents that affect the coil Voltage-- not only shelving the high end above ~1kHz by a few dB (with a 1.6mm Al pickguard), but further electrodynamically reducing just the upper-mids. The effect depends on the thickness and proximity to a coil. It apparently doesn't happen in an adjacent coil HB because the effect of the feild on each side is canceled by the reverse phase coils.
    Plastic can actually cause audible noise in a coil due to static build up. Crackling when strumming or brushing against the guard is a sign. Wiping it down with a static absorbing cloth may remedy that.

    The Glen Fricker thing about pickups, tubes, wood etc not making a difference is often misunderstood.
    He actually quotes that he finds pickups/tubes/wood to not make much difference to his sound in a RECORDING environment under HIGH GAIN. He admits that even in these situations Humbuckers sound different from Single Coils. He also admits that these things make a difference in other styles of music with less gain/not miked and in the room sound, but doesn't care because his channel is about Recording high gain Metal only.

    The conversation from ARC to VDI was interesting and I agree but the association between orchestral music to rock band music 'could' be seen as worse but the rock band format gave music to the common person, stopping the upper class gentry from owning it as a form of entertainment, utilising cheaper equipment with less focus on academic music skill. Now the shift to VDI doesn't liberate anyone in the same way but it does have utility. I will speak in favour of silent discos and bands plying silent with the audience wearing headphones as a unique and fun experience, especially when the audience have a choice of what they are listening to - that is a special thing to witness when everyone is singing and dancing to different things at the same time (ATG fest is great for that) especially AFTER a loud live show; an after party.
    Both formats can be communal but live music is special in that everyone is having a shared physical experience over a singular performance. To look at a stranger when you are overwhelmed with something dope that just happened and to just feel those pressure waves...it also makes a much bigger difference with the band playing as well, with things loud you can see artists getting lost in the moment and that is invaluable.

      There are very very few pedals I would willingly recommend irrespective of the player or the rig, but the Kingsley Page would be one of them. In my opinion it's a modern classic. It can be a solo boost, a low gain drive, an always one tone enhancer adding a touch of tube compression to a stiff or sterile backline....It is one of those rare universal pedals.

While Kris Barocsi did awesome video, with stellar sound quality, where he took 2 custom shop Gibsons and switched all the hardware, electronics (basicaly all that is possible to remove without luthier work) between them and still the character of those guitars prevailed and they sounded distictly different.
    And the Guitaristas made awesome video, with modding Epiphone 335, where he showed how huge impact can have simple thing like replaceing stop tail (from all the things you can exchange).

    Regarding metal around pickups! This is a real electro-magnetic property called "shading" and occurs in any adjacent conductive metal, ferrous or not! Current is induced in aluminum pickguards, brass or nickel pickup rings or bottom plates in the presence of magnetic flux. Shaded pole electric motors use this effect in order to impart a rotation direction! Shading metal will affect the inductance of the coil, which affects the signal induced.

It has more effect as a cover than around the pickup, probably because of the total surface area in relation to the coil. They all reduced the Q and affected inductance up or down just a bit with varying effects on noise. Here's the test "Guitar Pickup Theory #7: Effect of pickup cover material on tone and noise".

    Ah, yes, my church worship team uses an electronic drum kit but I'm stood next to an electric baby grand with a downward facing speaker which cannot be turned off and I can always feel it. I have to turn the piano down in my ears just to cope. No one else can "feel" themselves. They refuse to disconnect the speaker (they say) for fear of voiding the warranty. I suspect the pianist is just addicted to the "feel" of the instrument. All instruments are "silent" except for that one.

    Folks, I'm wondering if there's any difference between the Boss Super Shifter PS5 and Harmoinzer PS6? I saw St. Vincent in the Royal Albert Hall last week and wow what a show! I know Annie used the ps5 for the longest time, so presuming it's still the one on her board making the wild pitch shifting noises, haven't been able to find one used with a reasonable price including shipping so wondering if the new model does the thing... cheers

    31:52 It’s a question of convenience and control (the bad kind) for the sound person a lot of the time. I just ran into this over the weekend playing a solo gig opening for 3 full bands. My thing is loud doom county with the occasional fuzz and octaves through two amps. New sound guy at my classic old venue told me to turn down at sound check. I have no drums. No bass player. Just an acoustic guitar through two amps. Hundred watt Fender Twin Reverb (on 3) and a 15 watt Orange Tiny Terror through a Marshall 1x12 cab (volume halfway up). What is the deal with these people?!

      @@ThatPedalShow If you were referring to my recommendation for Harley Benton cabs, I consider it a matter of cost benefit.

    AFAIK, Jim Lill hasn't made official statements about what matters. He's merely run tests and presented the results. Granted, strumming the same chord and letting it ring for less than a half second won't reveal all potential differences, and an SPL graph does not show dynamic, harmonic and resonance differences over time. I've addressed the later with Glenn Flicker. To be fair, his motivation is to keep young musicians from going broke when they could get something they like for a lot less money. For that I commend him, even if he is dead wrong about some things.

  • @GCKelloch

    I think tubes and even some SS components do indeed rule. The problem comes down to how much the tube production/waste cycle adversely affects the environment. Tubes may well go by the wayside one day. We can then all have a good cry, but let's be adults about it. Software will continue to evolve to do thing physical components just can't. Besides, it's not the method of sound reproduction that matters (same applies to analog vs digital recording), but the artists, instruments and music. Electric guitars are still analog instruments after all. Digital sound reproduction won't change that. If you get hung up on methods of sound reproduction "...you will miss all the heavenly glory". Oh, and enough with the humility Olympics, already. Just say something like "Thanks for the compliment, and it's truly an honor for you to know me." 😜
