My best value gear item would be my QMX6 GigRig switcher, seemed like a lot of money at the time for a device that doesn’t do much....but it has been on my board now for every gig and rehearsal for the past 8 years ( the same one - I tightened a screw once or twice...) and it has allowed me to enjoy every pedal to its fullest, even giving me a chance to put a pedal I had made myself on! It really ends the pedals vs straight in debate as it allows both! Dan can’t say this on his show but I can ,thanks Dan and your team👍🎸

RE: the Dan + guest idea with MIDI / digital / magical oddities. Personally, I'd really like that - but would still value Mick being present to ask more fundamental questions. (The kind I'd ask.) Maybe Mick can be behind the camera then pop in for a regular segment called 'Mick Asks Dumb Questions On Behalf Of The Confused'.

I was going to say my most "valued" piece of gear is a Victoria Reverberato previously owned by Ray Lamontagne, but I didn't say it because I wondered if anyone would know who I'm talking about. And then Mick broke into Jolene! Beautiful serendipity.

When I was shopping for electric 12 string, the choice came down to the reissue of the fender hockey stick and the Danelectro 59X12. I thought the Danelectro sounded just as good, if not better, played better, and was almost half the price of the Fender. It’s a superb electric 12 string. I pick it up after months of not touching it, and it’s completely in tune!

I know a bunch of people here in the comments might groan when I say this, but my best value gear is my Boss Katana 50 MkI and 50 MkII paired ABY. For all of the functionality of those amplifiers, versus their low price, they are by far and away the best value I have.

No no no no no. Do not bring in a different presenter. The best thing about TPS, above all else, is the chemistry between the two of you. It's entertaining and its engaging. It doesn't matter if one of you isn't into the pedal you are talking about. If anything, it provides balance. The kit you talk about changes week to week, but the reason we come back for more is the two of you. THAT is the show.

Appreciate the thoughtful discussion of Guitar Dad question, gents. I am entirely aligned with Dan. Youngest (turns 10 next month) for a couple of years there was under the impression she was in the TPS band -- she and her purple Uke. She has since acquired a Squier mini Strat and a modeling amp all her own. I am thrilled, but no pressure, all joy.

Yes! You're already using the odd guest expert to augment the answering of questions beyond their "known" personal history. That allows the viewers to expand both their technical and experiential understanding. Elevating a guest (temporarily) to that of co-host is a logical progression in service to viewership. It also may allow either Dan or Mick to "take it in" and should promote some rejuvenation.

I like not having a rhythm guitarist. I then must decide when and how to integrate rhythm with melody/harmony as if a solo guitarist were reading my mind. And, I must also read my own mind and not "step" on myself. I'm not sure which shall or should 'win" because they most not compete but fully support. This is the basis for the most fun of arranging and performing those arrangements. Hopefully at some point I'll also develop the courage to modify those arrangements live - without throwing off the bass and drums.

I still have and use my 1996 Roland BC-60 (1x12). I have not found anything better. Roland now makes several versions of the "Cube" of which I am most partial to the "Hot"' but base that assessment only upon reviews. I bought a Cube 30X on 2009 but it did NOT measure up (10" speaker). Two 10" amps fill a room, but one just cannot measure up to a single 12" - of which I now have two. One is solid state an one is tube and I have yet to pair them.

ROFLMAO! Lovely show fellas! Always good to see Rosie make an appearance! She's a good girl!! Anyway, I remember the crossover thing was kind of popular with bass players in the 80's. They'd send the top end to a solid state rig and the bottom end to something like an SVT. I think Stanley Clarke might have helped make that popular.

I don't know how many of these exist, but Fender did a collaboration with Paul Rivera to make a run of silverface Deluxe Reverbs that incorporated Paul's mods from the ’70s - back when a Rivera'd SFDR was a quintessential studio amp, Lukather, all the Steely Dan guys, etc. - and those are worth looking for.

I’ve had it since Oct. 1985. The “straight to the input jack” mod would give me a 3rd SPDT mini toggle switch and I am going forth! I’m adding this comment:

My best valued guitarrelated thing is That pedal show and Homeskoolin. I loved all the magazines in the 80s/90s but this is surely next level lessons and inspiration for the price of buying some merch now and then.
Further on I find the subtle "10th man-attitude" from a sometimes not overwhelmed Mick very useful. It gives the show dynamic, perspective, tension/release, push/pull or whatever you want to call it. Finally. What you have to do is ignore all the people telling you what do do.

Best value gear item for me, about a day late, but it’s my Marshall 2555SL. I found it used about 2 seconds after it was put online at a used gear store (verified by the very surprised sales person on the phone who just uploaded it to their website). I got it for $1200. It’s basically a Marshall Jubilee first run but a limited run made for Slash when he used them in the 90s. Before that amp I went through a few different amps and couldn’t find the perfect one for me. This one ticks so many boxes and sounds amazing with anything from a strat to a Les Paul. I’m never selling it on, have gigged with it, rehearsed with it, practiced with it constantly.

I can definitely echo the point about audio interfaces. The last couple of weeks I've been getting excited about the prospect of a new guitar, but just yesterday I was playing with some plugins (I know...) into my power amp and having a blast when I think something on the input stage of the interface started to go. Haven't figured it out yet and slightly heartbroken that the guitar will have to wait but needs must cause I can't do anything without that interface...

Referring to the interest of a different guest for things like the Big Sky MX is a good idea although I would say still having input from whichever one of you wasn't involved initially as a conclusion would be cool.
Example say for big sky you have Dan and maybe Rabea? Have those two shoot the episode batting ideas about and then bring Mick in with somethings the other two have cooked up to see if they can bring some inspiration or intrigue to (in this case Mick) for a ending segment?

Get someone that will go deeper with Dan on weirder and/or programmable FX like the new Big Sky, etc but also you could dig deeper into some recording stuff with engineers and other recording geekery (or whatever shit you want). PCB vs hand wired?
PCB construction is far more repeatable, bringing efficient consistency for the manufacturer, therefore lower cost for the customer.
Hand-wired demands a deeper and wider range skillset from the builder, so a great deal more training before someone becomes useful on the line. It's more craftsmanship and tradecraft than modern assembly line work.
PCB repair can be quick if it just involves module replacement and the modules are available, but that's probably only available at the factory if the product was designed with that in mind AND it's a current product. Hand-wired is decidedly easier for a local repair shop to bring back to life when some component goes *bing*.

However, when adjusted or inflation, and also revalued per current cost of relative quality items taken into account, can the exchange be accurately evaluated? Who cares? Indeed! The point about ARC and DIV is that we’re moving in a DIV direction. The magic of a sporting event (or gig, more to the point) is somewhat diminished after it moves from being ARC (ie you being there in person) to being more DIV (you watching it at home on your own). Clearly there are stages between the two, but the trajectory in pretty much everything in our lives is towards DIV. See?

My 1985 JC-77 has the hiss. Are you just noticing it more at home because of lack of other ambient noise in your practice area? vs a gig setting. I have a power conditioner too. Doesn't do anything for my JC hiss, it is just the noise floor of some of those amps. Mine is my wet amp, (it is my always on chorus pedal). Using it as the wet and it has the noise floor issue, but I am only playing at low levels (basement) in an old house.
Haven’t tried it yet, but I did read a recommendation to run a noise suppressor pedal in the fx loop.

Hi guys, I have a question for Mick. There is a UA-cam video of you demoing a Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555X. Absolutely the best demo of that amp. Was wondering what pickups were in the Strat you used in the demo? Sounded killer. Didn’t think a Strat could sound good through a Jubilee but that changed my mind. Thanks

Hello Pat. They were the Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups that were in Blue at the time. Texas Hot maybe? Anyway, some of the first ones they did. However, I can say with some certainty that any decent vintage-style pickups would do a very very very similar thing. What you're liking about that demo IMHO is that the amp was CRANKED in a huge, fantastic sounding room with plenty of room mics mixed in. The producer/engineer Martin made the call that we'd do that in that amazing space. Makes all the difference to have it loud with //actual// real room sound so you're really hearing the cab working too. Hope that helps!

In addition to "knowing your gear" is to "know you" in response to "your gear". Do not assume it reasonable to remove "you" from the equation. The "you" is the basis for "reasoning". Learn how "you" respond to "what(ever)" and the change which comes to you extends that "relationship". This is the primary draw to your channel.
