it's not permanent, but the way of getting rid of it was very likely not programmed correctly. basically, so long as you can exit a level that is an even number of levels after you first caused aggro, and you didn't kill a shopkeeper in a few certain ways (particularly bombs or shotgun), you can get deaggro

Why did the shopkeepers stop pursuing you? I thought in Spelunky 1 aggression was permanent.
