We don't plan to move to Madeira (or anywhere else) but love your videos! They remind us of our previous visits, in particular the levada walks and Funchal, and have helped convince us to plan another visit this fall. Obrigado!
We are in the process of making the decision to move to Portugal. My husband adores Madeira, and I adore Madeira. However, a mainland location might be more practical. We are 76 and 75-not spring chickens-but we are young at heart and definitely adventurous. Your videos are so helpful. Thank you.
Ola Karen, We understand what you mean. There some places on the island that are easier to get around. But the mainland has so many wonderful places as well. Porto, Douro Valley, many areas of the Algarve...
It’s time for Wolfe to say words that are age appropriate for him. I would like to see more of what he is done & doing at his young age to help his retired parents to reach their goal? What does he do currently to avoid making the same mistakes the parents did to ensure his retirement will be more glorious? What is he learning at school? Where is he working or planning to work after graduation? and so on...
Great video guys! Lots of great thought-provoking points. I definitely prefer the format where you get out and about. In Madeira's great outdoor environment, your presentation style is much more natural and relaxed compared to the indoor, newsreader format. That looks like a great hike! Cheers!
I have been following you guys for some time now. A recent global issue took my focus away, but it's back. Keep up the good work. We are planning a move to mainland Portugal within the next few years. A property purchase is this year though.
We're thrilled for you. Planning and finding your perfect place is such an exciting adventure. If you need any assistance, don't hesitate to reach out. Visit us at www.itllbefunretirement.com.
Ola Laura, Muito Obrigado. We really had no idea that we really could create such a wonderful life. We travel throughout Europe and live a wonderful daily life here in Madeira. Thank you for watch and supporting our channel.
I planned on moving to Portugal in October 2024 and wanted private health insurance. Unfortunately, I discovered that since I am over age 64 and have a "pre-existing condition", which could be almost anything (high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) there is only one company that will insure me, MGEN. That could be okay, except MGEN's online reviews are terrible. Then there is the one-year waiting period. So much for great healthcare in Portugal!
Olá Paxwolf, The review you are getting may be a little incorrect. In our case we have Mgen and love it!!!! It is better than what we had in the USA by far. There was only a 3 month waiting period for us. So we signed up before we left the USA and were covered as soon as we got here. For Wolf's preexisting conditions we had all his tests run right before we left the USA so he didn't need them again until the following year. Lastly even had we paid in Portugal outright it would have been cheaper than the USA with our insurance. So ...
I’d love to leave the states for a country like Portugal even though I wasn’t born here but won’t consider going back to my native land as has been invaded also by a neighboring country creating even more problems for the people there , but I guess this is happening all over the world . Unfortunately my husband is not an adventurous man and I doubt he will ever leave America 😢
If Portugal had just kept their Golden Vista real estate option available for 15 months longer, I would already be there. I began the process of selling everything a few years ago, preparing to retire. By the time I finished, the options had changed for the worse. Residency options have, in general, become more expensive and look to be narrowing further.
We understand how disappointing it can be when plans change. However, there are still some Golden Visa options and lesser-known NHR opportunities available. Our immigration lawyer can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs. Feel free to reach out to her at sandra.jfernandes@sjf.pt.
If only they would give incentives (NHR, golden Visa, etc) to people to rehab houses in ruin. I'd be there tomorrow!!! It would be a win-win! So many houses in disrepair, and unliveable.
I have a friend and client that is going to be hosting a personal development #retreat in Portugal in January. He lives in #Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is using a Travel Advisor. But, I wonder if there are any special attractions that we should consider that the advisor may not be aware of. Any input will help.
I watched your video where you talked about shipping the bug over. We were just in Portugal and Spain a few weeks ago and I only saw one beetle in sad shape setting behind a building in Taveria. Like you, I love my bug and plan on keeping it till they bury me. Moving to Portugal is definitely on the table in a couple more years, of course like you the bug will come with me. With all that said, are there a lot of requirements to meet to drive an older car there?
It needs to be stock configuration, with no modifications. And able to pass a rigorous anual inspection. So if you have a stock bug, by all means bring it!
Not many at all! They need some here . If you are actually coming here to Madeira it would be an issue with van. Space is tight and driving the hills...
Bom dia! Maybe you guys can help with something! Can't seem to get an appointment date set up, on-line, for the Portugal Embassy in San Fran (have trouble with the site) Have tried with their on-line help system with no luck. Emailed the attorney you suggested with no luck. Why is this so hard... Ready to pull my hair out! Have everything set up except the VISA part. Can anyone reading this actually help??! Hi Alan and family. Can't wait to meet you!
Olá Karen, We heard you should try at the beginning of the month. And we also heard the to try every morning because they only release so many. Usually your attorney that is putting together your VISA packet will get you set up with an appointment. Anyway, keep us in the loop. We can't wait for you to get here!

Ooo, that bridge 😳
It's a good one!
I watched the beautiful video 🎉thank you for your kind words about Madeira island 🏝️

6:05 $14k/yr for property taxes. What a joke. The USA is completely out of control. Glad you got out. I’m ready to go too
We know. That did make it easier for us because we were going to need to move somewhere no matter what. So going to a new country was an easy leap.

I moved to Central Portugal and equally lovely!
Ola Cathy, Do you have recommendations for people to can see for a visit?

Why not plan a nice long visit!!!! You don't have to move to come and enjoy yourself. We have many friends that come here for 2 or 3 months at a time.

This is an excellent lesson on why you should apply for residency asap if there is a program that interests you and you can afford it...
That is the part of the program that has been cut out. The houses in ruin are usually not available due to being owned by many family members.

Portugal has so much to offer. Your question is difficult to answer.

move to the mainland and live on even less money!
Absolutely can be done for a lot less on the mainland.
Bom dia!!!! Hello! Hi! Ola!
Do you have a cold?? Your voice sounds different?
Yes! I have been sick for the last week or so. Sorry, the last couple audios have been horrible. But I am starting to feel better.
