Ive still never under how they got Craig calm enough to record his songs as perfect as he does.
I love the vines, they’re one of my favourite bands… but if I was in the vines I’d be so fkn sick of him having a melt down every song. It’s like “we get it, rock n’ roll man, you’re so wild, Kurt Cobain used to break guitars and stuff and you wanna be him, but at-least put on a show first”. It’s like he thinks if he’s deliberately fuxking around, nobody will hear the mistakes.
@@HAYDS510he had a serious condition, so while the meltdowns were maybe just him. touring and moving around all the time and meeting new people wasn’t helping his condition and rather made it worse. hence the tantrums he has on stage lol
Personally while their live performances aren't great musically , i fucking love the vibe and the fact they just do not care.
That was epic. I remember it well. I never forgotten that episode. Vines real rock'n'roll. Great band

Their first album was really great.
Lucky enough to have seen them at what - so far - appears to be their last ever show in the UK in 2006 at the Electric Ballroom supported by The View. Absolutely fantastic gig, and a top band. I hope Craig's doing well - recent releases have been very enjoyable.

These guys introduced me to my favorite band ever. I was in high-school and on their website in a thank you section they listed James Dean Bradfield from the Manics for ..something! Lol. I was like .. who? Loved them ever since.. saw them the two times theyve come here to the US! .. I do miss the vines though!!

There was some incredible bands that came out of that scene - The Strokes, White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Libertines, etc. That was probably the last big guitar scene before it all went to shit.

I'm sure Jools was loving that they gave him good TV, but I wasn't a fan (I tried). An overlooked band from the garage rock'n'roll resurgence of that time was a great outfit from NZ by the name of The D4 (managed by wee Alan McGee), got any footage of them, Stevee?
The D4 rule! I saw them supporting The BellRays once in Nottingham and they totally upstaged them. Jimmy Christmas was hanging upside down from the lighting rig at one point, still playing. Probably the best live band that I've ever seen.
Their record was good and live they just took the piss (well singer boy did) think the band got fed up with him in the end. All those shite 4th wave garage bands took them self far too serious while churning out bland uninspired rehashed shit…I rate these guys only cos refused to let it got their head, even though they were more cliche than the rest as a result. Second album only had the one good song tho…

You should check out their debut album "HIGHLY EVOLVED". Easily one of the best album releases on the early 2000's. Every song is KILLER.

smashing up guitars and amps... it was cool when the Who did it, and when the Clash did it, as both bands had much to say in the world of rock and roll, and they were entitled to say it as both bands were very much different to what had gone before.. but I'm not sure The Vines hit that spot, as we've heard it all before.. this sound is no different to what I heard in the 70s/80s
It’s not per se about having something to say though right? I remember being in my early 20s having a ton of pent up anger and seeing an unhinged band smashing the shit out of stuff really resonated with me. The Who I always wanted to love, but I found very boring besides the drummer. So from that point of view I could say: the Who needed that cause they lacked rocking songs. I know that’s not true for a lot of people, so I guess it’s subjective. (Maybe cause my taste was formed in the 90s?). That being said, The Vines singers screaming live always made me feel very awkward. It felt trying too hard. But knowing he suffers from Asperger’s and is really, really uncomfortable up there it makes more sense .
The whole garage revival was a recycling of 70/80s rock.
He was diagnosed with Asperger’s.

For the rest of the band, this is hard. For one, your music has just broken through and gained interest from the media. For mainstream audeinces, these TV performances are likely going to 'seal the deal' as to whether or not they give you a chance. But the performances arent doing your music justice. And secondly, it puts so much pressure on you to play everything perfectly because of the sheer unpredictability of Craig. And its highly likely theyve had a chat with him about it several times and he keeps on repeatedly sabotaging each and every song you play; seemingly on purpose.
Equally Craig must look back at this and remember it all but not quite understand what was going on inside of him. And for everyone watching it and the time, we are thinking that hes taken the rock n roll energy too far and find it funny at best and irritating at worst. Absolutely nobody realises that the seemingly manic behaviour is a reaction to loud noise, bright lights, crowds (ie.sensory needs) associated with Aspergers. The amount of cortisol being released into Craigs body every time he steps on stage is causing an extreme fight, flight or freeze response. You can tell this by how every song starts off quite solid and as time goes on, Craig begins to crumble. And all he can do is try to make it all seem intentional by doing the whole rockstar 'smash up your instruments' thing at the end.
Craig is obviously on meds now and is in control. Its sad because the guy is really talented and this is one of the few cases in history where a bands demise is not related to ego, money, creative differences or drug addiction/mental illness but being neurodivergent.
Craig however DID get help and treatment, most don't. And still makes music and seems relatively content. So it has a happy ending. I hope he is well. Seems like a good guy.

Not the best quality, but 10X better than any mainstream artist today. No playing along with prerecorded music. All live, all real.
The drummer & bass player are holding it together quite well but they are beholden to the lead singer.
His antics are what makes the performance different and entertaining. I guess it's what is called "Confronting Performance Art". At least they stand out from the rest.
