Honestly, it's personal preference for how much wire you want to work with, I probably cut my wire around 5 metres and then fold it on itself. So 2.5m is the length I work with. It changes with each sculpture tbh, depending on scale.

Perhaps you could use a hand held drill moving slowly to braid the wire.
