You know it's going to be a good video. When Ray is wearing pink gloves while working on a truck that has a glitter grill and mirrors.
He's supporting breast cancer awareness month. He's only off by a few months.
Maybe he ran out of work gloves and had to use his playtex dishwashing gloves.
They are the Wife Units Marigolds 😂
That's the Florida Man special edition.
Those are Ford gloves.
"It needs more work, I can feel it" Understatement of the century
I don't understand how people who put those large tires but don't enhance the components too handle the larger tires expect the regular components too handle it.
Love watching Ray make vehicles better again. It's very relaxing and fun.
That swaybar link looked nasty.
I was thinking the same thing.
link and balljoint are done
I'm impressed you brought it back from drive train carnage on the costumers budget .
The dramatic music when the brake cleaner appears never fails to entertain!
Seeing this ranger makes me miss the 2001 ranger I had. It rusted out before the drivetrain failed on it at 525k miles 3yrs ago.
Ray and Mrs. Ray (when he lets you on that is)
I just wanted to say thank you for the entertainment that you provide through your channel.
I’m floating in and out of hospital at the moment and any spare time I have is usually in a waiting room.
BUT, any spare time I have at home…..it’s seek out Ray and “ The Spousal Unit “ for some r&r.
Thanks guys, I really love your show.
Sincerely,
Rod
❤❤same here love the content 😍❤️
Can we all just pause a moment here, and look in marvel as Ray was able to find a 10mm wrench, almost instantly. This alone is one of the 3 miracles required for sainthood!
*A holy light shines down on the wrench as an angelic choir plays in the background*
In 25 years of turning wrenches, I think I've only ever done that twice in my lifetime and both times was a miracle in and of itself!
That's because he has several strategically placed around workshop.
i found mine the other day but i cant remember were i drop it, i know i put in a safe place
It's so nice to see Wife Unit cheerfully step in to help you when you need it. She is definitely a keeper!
Wow 😳 that's a lot of pressure on that suspension,no wonder it basically ate it's self up😅, it's nice of you at least trying to help them, since their on a budget, and I get to learn as well
That lift contributed to extra stress on the front wheel bearings. The angle of the CV joint is a giveaway.
Plus the clown shoe size tires
its a typical thing, people are retarded, they want a lift kit so their truck feels like driving a Semi, but then expect all the OEM part to magically adapt and last, that CV will gone year or earlier, taking the hub in the process and likely fucking the shims in the diff
Abused and used in the rocks I'm sure it has lasted quite a long time
I wonder how many really nice trucks have been dealt the same hand as this one by their wannabe Grave Digger owners. Very few things look as ridiculous and are as useless as lifted pick-up trucks. Every one of them has this same front suspension failure waiting to happen, it's only a matter of time. Oh well, whatever floats your boat I guess.
When everything is a hammer 😂😂😂 the only sad thing is that I can't help but feel that it won't be long before another wheel / axle lets go. And no Ray, not trying to take a cheap shot at you, I 100% understand commercial realities. If the owner of the vehicle doesn't want to do a full rebuild then whatever happens next is ultimately on them.
Never a budget repair on safety. That said Ray knows what he's doing.
Being cheap and on a tight budget is usually much more expensive than spending the money to do it right the first time. For example, the owner of this truck is probably not going to spend the money for a front wheel alignment. Those tires already need to be replaced, but if he doesn't do the alignment, he will just spend a lot more money on tires. It costs more up front to do a complete and thorough job, but that is what credit cards are for.
@@frazzledude yep being cheap does cost more in the long run but if things are tight enough that it's a choice between keeping a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food on the table and the keeping the lights on then I also understand that from a practical standpoint sometimes people simply have to do what they have to do and try to ride out the rough patches until things improve. I am not about to give the owner of this vehicle a hard time for needing to make difficult decisions because we don't know their situation and circumstances. It's easy to sit in a glass house throwing stones, criticising others but honestly if you haven't walked a mile in the guys shoes then you've got little business telling them how they ought to live their life. One thing about Ray that I appreciate is that he understands such realities, and he does his best to make the vehicle as safe as possible given the available budget knowing that if he doesn't do the job then someone else will only likely in a far less safe manner.
Ol limitationslol lol p pp 0 looking
I love how you talk to parts...wrenches ..and the camera/"your audience "😊 you are a super star.
if i ever do a repair video it will sound like a telegraph. beep, beep beeeeeeep , beep, beep beep beep, youtube will censor it right away from me swearing in 3 different languages
Good morning Ray, I knew you would get that truck back on the road again! You did a fantastic job with what you had to work with. The most important things are that first it's safe, you got it done within a tight budget and I'm sure the owner is a happy camper 💯
It's always nice to see the wife unit in action. Hope y'all have a great day and stay cool 💯🇺🇸✌️
Up here in canada that backing plate wouldn’t be a problem ,it would have long retuned to where it came from!
Oh I can feel my old instructor spinning in his grave. Using old brake pads with new brake discs (rotors, in the US, right?) is apparently an unforgivable offence. Never understood why and I’ve done it under protest, sometimes, without any problems.
It’s good to see another professional do it, probably also under protest, given the age of the truck and the extensive parts list. Sometimes you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do.
Yup. A few minutes later, he clarified exactly that.
In the US, rotor or disc.
In theory, you want brand new machined metal and brand new pad to get to know each other, but I'm not the only one here to have done a "pad slap" here and there, I'm sure. I'm not sure, however, what's so 'orrible about used pads on new rotors. Bedding pads, as I understand it, is about breaking in the rotor surface/depositing the nice layer of brake pad on them. Of course, a used pad may not be square/level/evenly worn, too.
You always do what is best for the customer. Sometimes it is replacing everything and sometimes it is doing bare necessities!
It's good you're replacing the whole caliper since the force that bent the bracket most likely damaged the piston seals. That happened with my 2018 Mazda 3, the wheel came off because the mechanic forgot to tighten the lug nuts. We had to replace the wheel, the fender and the lower control arm knuckle. A month later we noticed the caliper was leaking brake fluid so we had to get that replaced as well. Luckily, it was all covered by the garage's insurance.
if the wheel come off ( most responsible places ) you looking at bearing hub, calliper, axle shaft and joints, i would pop the diff and look play in the carrier/ spider gears too...now buddy got his own shop, a helper kid, he just starting, so he wont turn down a job even though he knows he customer needs more, im assuming the laws in florida are pretty permissible
Best visual of the Carolina Squat ever!
I knew you would hand straighten the backing plate instead of not using one. You always do the right thing with available parts or not.
Ray there is a lot of stress on on the ball joints the axle and he brakes. This truck wasn’t meant for really big tires so get ready to do the other side, get ready. Have a good day
As a gearhead, these automotive videos are my go-to videos during my workouts. Infinitely better than any music video or talking head pablum video.
You watch while working out or just listen to ray's commentary?
@@justindaniels17 Yes.
I like that there is a person that will do work (economically)!!!
Much love from the tip of the mitten state!!!
it's nice to see you helping the owner out, agree rotors and pads should be changed in pairs, but you really are trying to keep the cost down :)
I love how much of a dorky guy you are. I assume its not just a show you put on for the videos, it comes off as your natural personality. I bet you're a lot of fun to hang out and chill with.
Thanks Ray - I looked up and Chucky was there playing a Banjo - nearly spilt my coffee 😂
my day goes much better when i start with a Ray video - i feel like i CAN have a great day 😁
The protection ring is a bolt keeper. Ideally you slide it up the shaft, insert the bolts, then pull the protection ring back in position.
I want to see the Tech's face when they take the inital read for the alignment. 😆
"The owner is aware they are lacking in the nut department" 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah... We figured on the owner's lack of nuts problem when we saw the what appears to be purple glitter painted grill. 😂
Great job Ray. Very good of you to work that backing plate and keeping budget in mind!!
You have to do what the customer wants and can afford I feel you ray
customer is a dumbass, it remind of a guy i used to know, he took a dodge neon off road, and a rock on the road took off the tranny pan, dumbass didnt realize it till the car stop moving ( same road where i granade my front diff on the previous truck, dumbass, that road its a truck/jeep graveyard, fun as hell buts its mechanics special, you go in only after you order spare parts)
🙃
Hopefully he can afford a couple of wheel nuts after getting the bill
Well he has a tow truck 😁 ship them to outside fence if their Jerks...that's a plus...send impound notice if needed.
He has a tow truck.. very smart.
In todays world when money and customer dictate repair, probably better off sending the job down the road. Way more trouble on the horizon then what you make on the job.
"when all you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like nails" AvE
Brake clean effects ALWAYS gets a like!
Morning Ray. Everything is a hammer 🔨😆. Those speakers have a lot of Bark.
Shop class in 1970, first class consisted of watching a movie. "The ABC'S OF HAND TOOLS", with the main character was named "PRIMITIVE PETE".
The main topic was the dangers of using your tools incorrectly!
Ray must have seen the same movie, everything is a hammer and a pry bar.
Nice work Ray!
As the official bearing aficionado of this channel, I do love me some bearing videos!
Great job your commentary and your positivity while you're doing these jobs are amazing I find myself using some of your catchphrases like gravity and click when I'm working
My wife and I do that too
Same here - washing dishes - shiny! :)
Another outstanding video Ray your the only reason I watch outstanding content but the most important thing is to have your self a great day Ray
Glasses lady is wayyy less scary and nicer when not pointing at couch😎
19:08 nice work Ray. You performed a miracle. Lol That plate was a piece of bubble gum before.
201st! GOOD TUESDAY MORNING RAY AND THE WIFE UNIT! With the two new employees who help make this shop work smoothly! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
This Ferd is gonna be back. Hopefully before the bearings on the other side let go.
No wonder he couldn’t hear or feel his wheel falling off lol 😂
Well he knows Troy ...and money pit Jeeps
Guy dragging that Ford to crap.
Ray..I commend you.
Backing plate... I can see a metal trash can lid 🙂
The 12" cresent hammer is a under rated tool.
I used to have one that was so loose it wouldn't turn a tight bolt, but it was a great hammer/lever.
An indispensable part of my Polish tool set .
Ray needs a Wilberts for locating a backing plate.
I wonder if the extra loud exhaust, plus extra power stero were louder than the failing wheel bearing? a case of more is less.
Great job, given the situation.
It's rewarding to keep old bombs going.
I have a couple myself ❤
Keep being kind to Mrs Ray, she's a keeper apprentice.
Thanks Ray! Got my favourite truck back on the road, identified the remaining required work, and ended the video with my favourite Casting Crowns song!😊
It's going to be: A Great Day🕊️
The "Carolina Squat" clip at 16:11 was fuckin mint lololol!!!
What about putting the axel nut back on or did I miss that part
I was thinking the same thing. Where is the axel nut
Good news everyone: Wife unit says 'Everything's a hammer' merch is on the way!!! SOOOO want that on a T-shirt!!!
22:53 The literal meaning of foot pounds. 😂👍🏼
Those swaybar end links should really be upgraded to solid bushings from those cheap plastic especially with all of the extra weight from the tires. You could reuse the one of the studs from the busted rotor?
The sway bar in these trucks does barely anything. This is an identical setup to the front IFS for the Explorers. It helps but most people take it off entirely if they take their trucks offroad.
Good morning hope your day is going well Raymond @Rainman Ray's Repairs
yes, that was the first time I have seen pink gloves! great addition to the shop for “wife unit”
when she is working on her odyssey kid transport unit. Personally I would feel very uncomfortable
driving that truck with minimal treads.have your self a great day Ray!
Hey Ray, i like your videos and there very very useful ☺☺👍👍
Hey ray I love your videos, you have very good skills in diagnostics and I learn from it every video I watch. I am a aspiring technician in school and I watch your videos to learn more. Greats videos and very professional!
On parts you can't find at a parts store you can find them at a salvage yard. Things like those bearing bolts, seal retainer, dust cover and such.
If you have a you pull it yard it may take pulling the parts you are after to find good parts. Things like bolts sometimes don't come out as usable. You might to want picking up extra bolts and such just to keep on hand.
There are other things that can be handy to keep around. Things like relays, lug nuts are things I collect when at the yard. They don't cost much and can save you a lot of time searching for them when you need it.
I did the same as you with the Subaru, extractor broke off in the block of a Nissan Sentra, I bought $300 worth of drill bits to drill it out and spent almost 4 days drilling on it. My step father was a machinist and he said “how do you sharpen a tool steel bit? With a stone” I bought a stone for my Dremel and had ground through the extractor in about 30 seconds. You can do it and save money.
That backing plate looks like its mom had a one night stand with Freddy Krueger...
Great work Ray and Lauren.
That could be a nie little truck if the owner is willing to get the maintenance done. You an outstanding job as always Ray.
Installing a bearing - took a cutoff wheel and cut a slot in the old outer race. Used the cut race as the installation tool and it was easily removed.
Thank you Ray
The speakers are used to hide all the noises that truck makes 😂
Love watching Ray
Gotta love it when you get the Wife Unit to help bleed the brakes Eric O does the same thing with Mrs. O
Next on Ray's metalworking: Everything's a hammer.
I cant fathom how ppl can let their vehicle go so far before they think about maintenance. Good video ray!
Great job, Ray!!
The "dragster dog" at 16:13 is hilarious!
That was an awesome video of a hub and hub bearing repair
Hey Ray, great video. Glad you coild get all those parts for it. Great work. Cheers!
Good video thanks
I have seen Crescent wrenches used as a hammer that got buggered up threads.
Ray, do you need to get an Anvil for the workshop next?
I've always been impressed with your skills. And now, you showcase your blacksmith metal-working skills !! Thx.
I just automatically like the video when I start watching it. All of Ray's videos are awesome!
Always a pleasure to watch your vlogs 👍
very ingenious solutions for difficult problems....
Great rebuild job ray
Good Job Ray,
Loved "next on Ray's Metal working show......" LOL!!! Good job!!
besides you doing a great job it is nice to have the clicks back, thanks for the very good video
thankyou Ray,,an excellent follow up,looking forward to the next one,,👍👍
"Danger Ranger" A friend of mine had a true Danger Ranger. It was a 4wd 89 standard cab with a 4 banger and a 5 speed, and it had a few scary issues. The front wheel u-joints were trashed, so it made horrific noises when he used 4wd, the driver rear cab mount bracket on the frame (right under the driver's butt) was rotted completely away (absolutely nothing left of it, and the frame was cracked where it kicked up behind the cab on the same side. He ignored all of it, because it was just a beater. Literally. He beat that thing like a rented mule both on and off road.
Nice job Ray.
Good job always 👏
@RainmanRaysRepairs great video as always this one had a lot of carnage but I think you may have forgotten the nylon circlip which holds the CV shaft in place from going in and out of the wheel bearing assembly.
I agree 👍 I have extensive experience with this setup and you are missing the circlip, kinda looking like it was already missing, and for future reference it's all the same as 95/01 explorer, other than the unit bearing and half shaft, in mid 2000 the ranger ditched the hubs and became identical to explorer
Thats the best damn metal work I have ever seen buddy! It is honestly WAY better than I could have done! 😅
Reminds me of when I had a 1986 full size EB bronco. I did all of my own mechanical fixes. It also had lock out hubs. I put all of the part's in order that they came out, thn reassemble them in reverse order.i was a class b mechanic. Love your channel ❤️ 💕 ♥️ keep up the great work. Hello from Pa USA 🇺🇸.
I notice Ray had to get help from the boss getting the brakes bled!😁
👍🇺🇸😎
I have a 03 ranger xlt 3.0 5 sp 2wd - 84k mi, bone stock.
- learning a lot about the front suspension and brakes from this vid. thanks ray.
I like how you talk to the parts, "stay, stay stay", your my kind of mechanic.
Great video
I was half-expecting to see the torch come out to 'unfangle' that backing plate. Because, we all know, Everything is a hammer. 😮
Hammer is a Tonya Harding, according to Derek @ VGG. lol
