These are such valuable people with these characteristics, because it's more than just a job to them. These people are the ones who dig deeper and find the really interesting things. Because they like it!
Love coming across people like that. :)

They have such great big attitude for their size, I guess. The size makes sense I guess because a meal is going to be few and far between at those depths. Things are dicey at this depth because there is no plant life at all since there is no light for photosynthesis.

Compared to most creatures at that depth it is one of the largest fish down there. Aside from the Kroyers Anglerfish, Oarfish, some species of Viperfish and Pelican Eels, it's up there with the biggest.

Devon Couch freezing things even freeze drying them would alter the tissues and make it much more fragile than if it was fixed and preserved with chemicals. Especially if they were going to dissect it later, freezing tissues make them incredibly mushy and hard to distinguish in comparison to dehydrating and fixing with formaldehyde. When in a lab setting you're supposed to keep anything fixed in formaldehyde under a fume hood so you don't actually smell it that much.

  • @sepiae

Wow. Both the video and the technique used, as well as for the anglerfish having had a last supper almost half its own size; I couldn't manage that.
Anglerfish and other light-baiting species are a reminder of just how huge an incitement light is. As an environmental phenomenon to be used as an advantage it's a driver of a wide array of different eyes in evolution, making this an all over surveilled planet - even at these depths where there's otherwise no light there's beings making use of it because there are other beings falling for this ploy.
Which gives credit to a careful assumption about life on other planets: although we can't just say they'd have eyes, knowing nothing about them, the likelihood of eyes in complex species will be high, as light is one thing we can be certain about to be present on exoplanets as well.
And they might even look less strange than this fish...

Did the size of its last mean kill it? You can see the tail of the prey curling up in its throat, so maybe it couldn't digest quickly enough to avoid being speared by the fish's spines.
