Especially if they were going to dissect it later, freezing tissues make them incredibly mushy and hard to distinguish in comparison to dehydrating and fixing with formaldehyde. When in a lab setting you're supposed to keep anything fixed in formaldehyde under a fume hood so you don't actually smell it that much.
This is what technology was created for not to be weaponized. That was awesome. I was born early 50's and we didn't have access to this kind of information or technology.

Did the size of its last mean kill it? You can see the tail of the prey curling up in its throat, so maybe it couldn't digest quickly enough to avoid being speared by the fish's spines.
