- Опубліковано 13 січ 2020
- In this video I share how I use the Octatrack to mix and remix my other Elektron boxes live. This practice allows you to get the most out of 1 pattern and also teaches you the fundamentals of the Octatrack. You will learn how to create record trigs, one shot trigs, using the record menu, setting up THRU machines and Neighbor tracks, set up the Freeze Delay, record external gear perfectly quantized and the Octatrack "crossfade trick" to bring it all together.

This was the clearest, most useful Octatrack video I have ever seen. I"m going to give this a go.
Thank you so much!
We need more Octatrack tutorials like this. It might be the reason not to sell mine. Thank you so much!
Thank you! If you sell your Octatrack it better be to buy a better Ocatrack ;)
This is the most important video I have ever watched
Haha thank you my friend!
Unbelievable how this content is actually free. The Octatrack is one of the (sadly) very few devices which are delivered with an extensive manual (well, at least the MK I was, my anniversary edition came without a printed manual, but the PDF works well, too), and I really like its manual because it covers a lot, really. But all this advanced stuff from the screen and speakers right into my brain is just another kind of quality.
It's a great tutorial, I reproduced it and everything worked right away. I have to admit that there were a few steps (esp. around the neighbor machines) where I did not really get the idea behind it completely and just accepted the fact that it's there "just because", but I'll figure it out.
Thanks for sharing, much appreciated, really!
ye i wanted to know as well ehy using neigh tracks...did you figured out it?
I cannot overstate how thankful I am to have found this workflow and template. Its been a few months now, and I am consistently making progress understanding it and utilizing and performing with it - and it has been a miracle. Like, that might sound crazy to people, but for so many years I have been trying to make and play live music starting with guitar, then singing and playing guitar, then DAWs and midi, then hardware - and nothing has ever satisfied me enough. I always wanted more and more creative freedom. I guess the word to describe it is “orchestrate” - I wanted to orchestrate the sounds and music I had in my head but couldn’t get them out right.
Elektron changed that, and then your work here took that to a whole new level I did not think was actually possible.
Thank you Matt! I’m so glad I can support you and repay you through Patreon and Kofi.
Thank you so much for the support :)
great vid! I especially like the trick about using conditional trigs to mute every other T when pronouncing "digitakt"
Outstanding. This should be part of Elektron's default material for the Octatrack!
Holy heck, I feel like this may have solved some of the volume issues I was having integrating my MachineDrum and my modular, plus this is lovely template.
Thanks for the tutorial~!
Glad I found your videos, I have been staring at my Octatrack for a month trying to figure out what to do with it.
This helped clear up the muddy waters of confusion with the OT. Thank you!
So inspiring. I have so much to learn. It’s nice be be able to watch these Octa videos and actually follow / understand what you are doing. I guess that means learning is actually happening. Nice work.
Glad you like them!
Spectacular work - clear and to the point. Some videos take 5 times as long to tell you half the amount of info - this one is a keeper.
Thank you for saying that!
Best explanation for using an OT as master in a live setting. Thanks.
Thank you very much!
I've been making music with my DT/DN to try and create this sort of feel with the Control All feature, this has definitely sold me on the OT! Thank you for this amazing video!
Thank you so much! It really is the missing piece between the two
VERY valuable video ! I have both Digi's and eyeing on Octa exactly from this reason. You made my decision a lot easier ;-)
Thank you so much! This is coming at an absolutely perfect time, since i just bought an Octatrack last week with the goal to do exactly what you're explaining here and i was a bit stuck on my own.
Glad I could help you!
Many thanks, you just created the most valuable video on this topic for the Octatrack ! It all makes sense now ❤
Oh man, thank you so much!
Pretty awesome! Can’t wait to get my OT in a few days. This gave me some great workflow ideas on how to integrate it with my MD UW+, Deluge and DM12 ..
All I can say is wow! Thanks for such a great training video! Concise and straight to the point. Please do more.
Thank you!
So amazinggg, thanks for all those precious informations sir!
Absolutely! Glad to be of service ❤️
Wow. What a perfect video. Thank you
Thanks for your cool octatrack tutorials!
No problem!
Excellent video - it helped me solve a problem that kept up me up for a couple of nights! Thank you!
that melody is dope
Thanks a lot ! The best tuto on OT !
Thank you!
Very nice. Thank you for sharing this!
You're welcome!
So cool! A tad over my head for now... but amazing what the OT can do!
Thanks Mathew, really fricken' cool....This Tutorial I will be studying over and over again...
I'm just starting to sync these three machines together, this will be so much helpful with the process.
Again.... thanks so much!
Yeah! I am glad you like it!
Kudos for you. Great video.
Very well explained ! Thanks a lot
Of course, thanks for watching!
Great tutorial EZ! Can’t wait to put it to use.
Well I’m set on the Octatrack. Definitely the perfect set up for me in combo w/ the Digitakt. Live remixing, crossfader, nuff said after getting comfortable w/ the Digitakt.
Heck yes! Have fun, Octatrack works best with friends!
Great stuff! Really easy to follow. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Thank you - amazing info
Too good 👍👍
Actually Three good 😝🤣
Need to see this thrice more to master the settings.
Another masterpiece in the trickery of Elektron, and we learn so much more.
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Mattew
Good to see you, Jo!
Thats so awesome
Excellent stuff
Thank you!
Cool technique! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Really nice; to the point and easy to follow. I did lose you at the live playing of the freeze delays tho.
really cool demo man! Digitakt is defo my fave!
It's my favorite too! Thanks for watching
thank you for the tutorial on the freeze delay!!!!!!
Heck yeah!
That's so slick! This is exactly the way I'd want to use the Octatrack. I've been itching to get one, but it's depth scares me. This helps a ton!
Happy to hear it!
Nice.. really got my attention this video
Awesome! I am glad you like it
excellent video man, thank you!
You got it!
Really what I needed.... Thanks you
Glad I could help!
Nice video man. Maybe one of the best Octatrack tutorial videos I've seen. My OT has been sadly collecting dust for a while (mostly because lack of time, not lack of love!) This video is inspiring me to get back into it though! Cheers... Subbed!
Awesome, thank you for sharing that with me!
nice mate!!
Very well done! Clear, concise and practical. Among the best I’ve seen. I finally was able to get a mk1. I really wish you were doing tutorials for those. Though I’m pretty sure I can attain the same results. This is definitely the configuration I’m aiming for. Thanks Matthew! Can’t wait for your next one.
I wish I had a MK1 as well but just so that I could keep it in my car haha. That way I always have an OT with me! You can definitely get these exact results with the OTMK1
Yeah I bet, ha ha ha... I got a really great deal on it. Everything works great; but there are 3 fricken beard hairs under the screen protector. Weirdest thing I’ve ever seen on a piece of gear. It looks like someone was stroking their beard after soldering something and the put it back together without blowing it off! Man i hope it’s beard hair... anyway I hope you’ll record your set and post it for us.
@@rrrobart9 I will for sure do that :)
Getting an OT in 2 days, so excited to try all of this myself!
I am excited for you!
i learn so much thks!!!!
Thanks for this work.
No problem!
Thanks - Super straightforward and clean. Saw this shared on elektronauts and I'm excited to give this a try. Cheers.
Love to hear this, thank you!
would you share the link to the elektronauts thread?

No problem! 😀
This made me rebuy the OT.

That is so smooth and hot! I just got my OT not long a go and have been wanting to see how someone creates the magic on this device. I see again that I have made a good investment. It just seems like a lot to learn but if you don’t start you will never get there, right? Thank you for producing this video. Your explanations are so clear but I just have to learn more of the programming side of it. I have never seen someone use the “neighbor” feature. I’m just connected to the OB-6 and Analog Four. Trying to wrap my head around it!
Subscribed!
Hooray!
Ha Ha ! Man you made my day ! Love that thing
Excellent!
Super rad. I want to do similar thing but with my Rytm and modular.
Yesssssss. I also love doing that exact set up.
Thank you so much
You're welcome so much
thank you
No problem!
That intro tho
Ok. Officially “Dark Chocolate” now after this vid!
That's what I am talking about :)
@@EZBOT_ man this is the most fun I’ve had on an instrument since learning the intro to Enter Sandman when I was 16 years old.
@@jakeforaker9628 haha that is an awesome thing to hear
Thanks
Great tutorial! I'm trying to work with a similar setup but I have analog rytm mkII and Analog four mkII instead of digitakt and digitone. In my scenario do you think I should use the Rytm for master clock?
Excellent information, stated very clearly! As a useless aside, your voice reminds me of Sam Harris.
The amount of ground you covered in just over 10 minutes is incredible....
Thank you!
@@EZBOT_ Alright, at $3 I couldnt refuse the patreon. You win.
@@idreaminsurfgreen5327 oh wow, thanks! Glad to have you!
thank you!
I've read the whole manual, but everything becomes more clear just after your tutorials ))))
I know exactly what you mean!
The way to use some features of the OT reminds me of fighting game moves. "Hold FUNC and press UP UP, LP, LP, DN, HP to activate recording"
Just like in those games once you get it into muscle memory you can do some sick combos!
Awesome work and thanks for sharing!
I’ve only been an OT user for like a month and this video is like a quiz. Every step that you layout forces me to ask “why was that done and what is the consequence of that”?
Thanks for this!!!
I love that analogy, thank you for watching!
Hey man! This sounds awesome! Very helpful! Make me want to have an OT even more :-). Just one questions pops in mind. Do you have to place the record trigs all over again? Or can you just rearm them again if you want to re record something?
You just arm them every time you want to record. Super easy!
Subscribed, liked and On my way to buy an Octatrack
Best news of the day! Another OT user!
This video was really helpful, just diving into the Octatrack and this is helping me get an idea of how I can utilize its potential. Quick question about arming recording while a track is playing. It works perfect when you first begin the track but when I try to record a new loop mid jam the tracks start recording as soon as armed and then it gets out of time? Did I miss a setting that would avoid this?
wow! like!!!Whooooo
A clear and concise way to bring musicality to an obtuse instrument. Thank you EZBOT!
Was just wondering if theres a reason you use one shot recorder trigs instead of QREC? What do you think of using qrec instead for this kind of scenario?
Great video! Just out of interest, with the latest updates for the Octatrack, would you change anything in this set up? Also, how (if possible) would I go about introducing a MIDI keyboard to the DN with this suggested setup?
I wouldn’t change anything honestly. To add a MIDI keyboard the easier way to me is with a MIDI merger.
Thanks a lot for the great video!!! Such a good use of scenes!
Did you know you can get to 0 and extreme values by holding function while turning the knobs? I find it super useful!
I did know that! :) you can also press down on the encoder and turn for a similar effect. Thanks for checking out the video!
As an OT-Beginner I really ask myself how on earth did you learn all that? I mean, even after reading all 3 manuals ( elektron, merlins guide and synthdawg) I´m still having a hard time to figure out what to do..! Especially when it comes to (re)sampling, there are so many different ways to initiate a recording! I see you mostly use record trigs and then activate the relative track, I saw Messy Desk just hitting YES two times, while Ricky Tinez only hits the REC 3 Button, without any record trigs..! I´m just glad to already know the Digitakt, otherwise I would be pretty lost haha
Nice .... :)
Fantastic tutorial. Concise, good pace, Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Way cool
Yeah!
Thanks a lot for such an informative clip. At5:36 what made you turn the trig to one shot trig and disable it and disarm the track ?
I like to be in control of exactly when the record trigs activate.
dope
Thanks!
Great tutorial. I’m still quite new to OT, so forgive the noob question. What’s the purpose of disarming the record buffers once you’ve set them up?
So I don't accidentally arm then during a show :)
Can you route just 1 of the digitakt inputs into the octatrack to leave room for a mono synth in this configuration? Love these tutorials!
Absolutely but it would be mono
What are your Channels / MIDI settings (Send/Recieve) in all devices?
Instead of having a dígito e and a Digitakt going through the OT can I have 2 turntables? Or 2 sp404 kind of like a dj mixer? What would be the best way to set up the OT to do this?
Super thanks. Can you describe ideal settings for Gain of your inputs and Main Volume output in mixer ? thank you
I don’t mess with this if I can help it honestly. Those settings are completely dependent on what your plugging in and what your plugging out to
@@EZBOT_ My target is minimised noise level an boost input signal to maximum. Conected are Digitone and Digitakt. OT output is recorded in Akai MPC Live. I cant reach more then -8db o output if I want record with low level of octatrack output noise level. Thank you.
thank you for quality tutorial...Would this apply to octa MK1?
It sure would!
So awesome man. Do you use dynamic recorders for this?
I usually have them activated but you don't need to use them for this.
@@EZBOT_ thank you!
Great tutorial: considering becoming your patreon, very good work allover. Only negative of this setup (I would do it in conjunction with A4 and RYTM) is that you don' t have any tracks left for sample loading/mangling on the octa.......
You could just not use one the neighbor tracks. We would be happy to have you, you should join the Discord and hang with us at the very least! :)
@@EZBOT_ I'm already on discord with/for jay hosking. how so i find you guys? thanks for the reply!
Great vid - quick question how would you integrate one more synth into this ? There’s no more inputs ... best to run DT into DN ?
Run it into the Digitone :)
@@mattpiecora9645 Yep
Thanks! Nice tutorial 😎👌. This only sound for headphones, and i try 2 times with the same setting that video. Can you help me?
Not sure what you mean? I think you just need to change what the headphones are listening to. Change it to main outs instead of the CUE?
Hi! First of all thanks for the tutorials and videos, they're incredible. I was wondering why are you using neighbor tracks instead of using the freeze delay directly in the thru track's effects. Same goes for the resample tracks, that could record the audio directly from the thru tracks. ¿Am I wrong to think so? Thanks again for the help.
I chose the the NEIGHBOR tracks because I wanted the end of the chain. I want to be able to resample or freeze the audio after I have affected it with whatever effects I have chosen. Putting it before the NEIGHBOR track would limit me to the effects on the THRU track.
@@EZBOT_ That's what I thought. Thanks for replying and keep up the good the work!
@@mateowalschburger3893 Totally and thank you!
And what`s the difference between vol and xvol in 7:58 ? is there a difference between using track level and amp vol and xvol?
One question: is it possible to have digitakt plugged in digitone then out to A/B and then my eurorack plugged to C/D for more flexibility and the octatrack becoming the full control instrument? Thanks for this cool video
Absolutely :)
Hi, thanks for the video. Got the octatrack cuz of that great explanation and cuz i needed a mixer like that to be portable.
One question since i am quite new to the OT and couldn’t find any answers yet: Is it possible to record the crossfader scene movements (to a track)?
Have my rytm plugged in and XVol Scene fading with a few triggs on the recording creates epic breakbeats in no time. Would like to have that recorded / or maybe even automated with lfo’s?
That’s a negative :/ thank you for the kind words!
@@EZBOT_ thank you so much for your quick response!
Feel bad about spamming but you are the expert: is there a way to avoid the slight volume drop when having the slider on the centre position and listening to the live input + recording?
The signal sounds weaker than on the A/B Slider position and I haven’t seen you resting the slider in the middle.
Thanks again :)
First off thanks so much for your videos. I’d be completely lost with the OT w/o them.
Question. I’m trying to set this up.
I think I’ve got it working pretty good.
But how often do you have to re activate (track + yes) the recording buffers ?
Every time you want a new recording other wise it just loops. Thank you!
@@EZBOT_ OK cool. That makes sense. That small detail had me kinda messed up for a minute. IDK why I thought it was just constantly recording.
Hey Matthew, nice vid. Thanks a lot. I´m using OT in a similar way with my Vermona DRM and a little Modular. Is there a way to record the main before the T8 efx, so i don´t need to include these into the scenes? Basically i have the main structure of my set in the OT and want to avoid mistakes when playing live... This could also be useful for long oneshot sounds...
Hmmm that is a tricky question, you could send everything to the CUE outs except for track 8 and record the CUE outs. Just make sure you dont set the CUE out as CUE mutes Track.
@@EZBOT_ Thats a pretty strong idea! THX again... I will try this one ! BTW Did you notice some loss of depth when fading from the analog to the recorded signal? Its very little but noticeable... just wondering if every unit behaves like this. Thanks again, you´re chief
@EZBOT I´m triggering a kickdrum at audio track with the Miditrack im using for the Vermona kick. So its easy to layer kicks on top of the drumsynth and don´t even have to worry about when playing live (if you carefully prepare your midi pattern). Every time I´m entering a trig at the corresponding midi track, kick samples get triggered from the values chosen at Note 2/3/4... Didn´t saw this little trick in your videos, so maybe an idea for next episodes...
@@Malle825 that brief moment was the cross point from live to recorded and at the moment we have 2 sounds being faded via the volume, if you do it quickly you really can’t hear it
Ok, so I got myself an Octatrack mk2… been playing n studying hard for a week now, so I can better understand these excellent instructional vids. After a first viewing, I can summarize my take home as “Octatrack… blah blah blah…”
I can’t figure how nearly 12 minutes of my life went by like somebody’d spiked my coffee with amyl nitrite… well…. man is this some complex stuff. I was happy just getting my old Emax samples in there and mixing them in with live guitar, mics and synths in C/D, and a Black box taking in the cued mix and mixing it out to inputs A/B.
Really, two scientific degrees and programing skills, and it still makes me feel braindead…wasn’t enough to have a vintage Gibson and a wonderfully patient wife to make feel like a total meritless idiot… nooooo… The masochist in me had to get an Octatrack…
And man do I love it! Thanks for your exceptional efforts with these vids, I will try harder!!!
