I live in West Vancouver. The greater Vancouver area has about 2.5m residents. Squamish is 47 minutes away (56km). And that’s a Grizzly Bear ... welcome to Canada!
I love how the one resident says. It’s something that is unlikely to happen again but yet “you have to expect that when you live in a place like Squamish”
Odd how the locals and the news reporters downplay the risks involved. Bears are wild animals, which are carnivorous, territorial, predatory, and can be unpredictable. Everyone going in or near their natural habitats should be fully versed in expert advice, precautions, and responses. Take all encounters seriously, and keep maximum distance. Be safe! 😁👍
*bans Griz hunting in B.C. then is surprised and terrified when encounted by a griz. This is and will be a frequent event in B.C. so long as ethical management of these predators, is not sought out. (hunting)
the Squamish Hospital is close by. Cougars, bobcat, and bear are often seen within sight of the Emergency Entrance!!! (I did the reno before the 2010 Winter Olympics there. January was hilarious and full of livestock; freezing snow cover brought the cats into the hospital and town grounds looking for meece. Bears were fast asleep.
Putins probably somewhere in the distance riding bareback on a swimming bears back. All while holding his rifle across his lap like the gangster he is.
Just goes to show how unpredictable wild animals can be. Whether or not the bear is just crossing the river or not, this is a grizzly bear, if and when it is hungry it will go after anything for a meal.
It seems in Grizzly bear attacks and encounters, or even wild animal attacks and encounters, they always say "this is so rare, it just never happens here." Meanwhile thousands of bear and wild animal attack accounts and videos abound!
The bear was just swimming to the other side, and it happened to be between the two kayakers. You can clearly see that he is focusing on the other side.
"That kayaker on the right side of your screen who was leading a group of river rafters with a locally based adventure group on the E-level river on Thursday *BEARLY* sees the bear coming."
The bear charged!, trying to assert dominance. Little did the bear know that the man in the kayak was Khabib, and that the mock charge would be met by excruciating grappling and swift defeat.
It is extremely rare for any bear to actually charge a human, and there is always a reason. As they stated, it was later discovered that there was a fresh kill on the other side of the river and the bear was protecting his food supply. As for having to expect it; absolutely. I live on the Alberta side of the Rocky Mountains and you always have to expect it, it comes with the territory. Tourists usually figure it out the hard way because they chose not to expect it (despite numerous warnings and signs). Welcome to the Canadian West.
I think the bear was just spooked by the raft and was trying to cross the river to get away from them , the kayaker just happened to be in line of sight of the raft and the bear.
Sorta looks like the bear was just running to build up speed to swim across the fast moving water and the current carried him close to the kayaker. That or the bear though the kayaker was also going for the dead elf and charged to ward him off.
After watching the video, the bear might have just been spooked by a bunch of rafts and was running to get across the river most likely. Obviously, you don't want to stick around in your kayak, but that doesn't mean the bear was really going for him. It was a narrow section, relatively safe to swim across.
The salmon start entering the streams and rivers in early summer and continue to do so until long after the first rains begin. Male bears will start protecting their spot on the river where the best fishing can be had and will chase anyone who comes within spitting distance of their spot. They will use this fishing sight to gain favor with females and protect it to the death against other male bears. While working for a hatchery I have been charged many times on the rivers from bears during and before spawning season begins. Bear mace does nothing in dissuading them from charging once they set their minds on charging you. I recommend using bear bangs instead
The Grizz was not charging the kayaker, it was just getting to the other side, because of all the boaters coming downstream. And it just so happens there was a dead elk on the other side.
Looks like the bear is just crossing the river. And if there was a dead elk on the other side, as indicated in the commentary, I'm sure the bear was more interested in the dead elk than the kayaker. Clickbait, nothing more than clickbait.
