Cool idea. Im looking for a similar way to store my tools for my off-road/camp suburban. I've been eyeballing that area as well because my 37s don't fit in that hole.
It looks like a good starting point. Once you get the design the way you like it you can always try welding one up your self. It doesn't look to hard. Like you said the hardest part is just finding the time to do it

Could you have turned the lid around, so it opened the other way? I imagine it's just riveted on.
