Social evolution is a process of directional social change, and evolutionary theories attempt to describe and explain this process. Theories of social evolution go back to the second half of the nineteenth century to Spencer, Morgan, Tylor, and Marx and Engels.
Darwin's Theory of Evolution inspired Herbert Spencer's perception of society and, as a result, influenced the theory of Social Darwinism. Discover the key elements of Spencer's theory, his coined phrase, survival of the fittest, and his influence on structural-functionalist theory.
Spencer and the Theory of Evolution
The idea of something changing naturally isn't a new idea, but one that Charles Darwin explained with his theory of evolution. Herbert Spencer, an English sociologist, took Darwin's theory and applied it to how societies change and evolve over time. As a sociologist, Spencer did not feel the need to correct or improve society, for he felt that societies were bound to change
