This is the video that got me into miniature painting a while ago, and now I'm *fully* invested. Sable brushes, quality paints, lamps and glues. My kids may not get an inheritance, but I appreciate the fact that you started me down this crazy hobby =D
"This is a very crude paint job"
Me: 😳
This is better than anything I've painted yet.... watching you blend the green up into the blue showed me how to shade lol
this is one of those paint jobs that makes you remember the real meaning of the words "awesome" and "incredible." It fills me with actual awe. I am 100% trying this.
That cape is sick!
Inquisitor? Now that brings back memories.
This is one of the best paint jobs I’ve ever seen, wow!!!
Impressive patience, painting all those dots
One thing I forgot to mention is that when using this technique with regular acrylic paint, you want to thin it slightly, otherwise it can leave noticeable bumps on the miniature. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you want to add some physical texture as well.
I use toothpicks to do the pupil and iris of the eyes. They work great.
most excellent info. this newbie is very appreciative of your help.
@@charleslatora5750 Same here. I see how great this works.
I know the idea is it's like sci-fi camo, but I can't help but see a fashion icon with a holographic cape
DUDE. This technique looks amazing! I've been stressing on what to do with my harlequins because none of the diamond work I've seen has looked that good. This will be a much easier (and much more impressive) way to make the holo material. Thank you for all you do Dr!
This is absolutely Gorgeous!
WOW! Stunning! Thanks for sharing!
Stunning piece! Marvellous job!
What an incredible lookig model!
Simply stunning! Wow!
Awesome idea and result.
Toothpicks are used in canvas paintings for similar tasks. I used them for my signature on some paintings.
That's a really cool rendering, excellent idea!!
Great job. Toothpicks are a very under-rated tool :)
Super eye-catching! Very nicely done. Thanks for the instruction 👍🏻
Wow, what an amazing idea!
Wow, bud. That really turned out neat. Nice work! Can't wait to try this on something.
What a great, interesting look. I shall give it a try. Thanks for the video and for sharing.
And I thought I was the only one who used toothpicks for certain things! That mini came out great.
So nice effect. Will add to my skills. (When patience is learned)
OMG! What a fantastic model and paint job but that cloak is absolutely stunning!
Looks amazing
your teaching is exceptional. You also inspire. Thank you.
Dude. You're paint techniques are always outstanding. Great looking mini. Would not have thought of using a toothpick except for model building.
incredible paintjob and base
This is how I had to do the names on my ships for Victory at Sea. Used to use it quite a bit on my 1/35 military figures for the eyes and insignias.
The whole process by it's nature is so simple and beautiful. Of course, practice makes perfect!
Thinking of doing this to some WH40k Eldar Capes/robes, etc.
Watched this originally when the video came up, but I've come back to it with thoughts that it might be a great effect on a 40k knight. Can't wait to get started on the project!
What a wonderful effect! I will shamelessly steal the idea for a future harlequin/eldar project
Wow, been a long time since I've seen an Inquisitor figure! I really wish I could have snagged a few of them when I had the chance. Your latest project is quite eye-catching!
Thats stunning!
This is incredible.
this is an awesome idea! reeally liked it
this might have just solved a design dilemma i was having. dude you are awesome.
Beautiful!
Very cool effect!
Looks great! Will be trying this for camo pattern on some mechs.
Fantastic… really enjoyed it… loved the show… thank you for teach us this technique. Your friend, Aiken South Carolina
Great technique! Very creative!
Beautiful work.
Wow. Simply: mind blown.
Fantastic work! I love it 👍
This is out of this world
Looks great, never seen this technique before
so simple but very impressive looking
Wow! Nice trick!
Fantastic work. Just what is needed for a Liberacé style elf!
this is amazing looking!
Ahhh I really love the cape! Sometimes I use toothpicks to paint details too, like beholder eyes
This is amazing
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
incredible!
Fantastic! Not sure when I'll use it but I am going to file this one away.
That is pretty bad ass. GJ.
I've used a sharpened toothpick for minis for years. It's stiffer than a single-bristle brush (and much, much cheaper), so you have great control, it absorbs paint, so it pulls it upward giving nice clean lines, where a non-porous object (like a metal pin or wire) can have the paint glob at the bottom and apply too much, and you can sharpen it down to whatever thickness you need. Nice to see someone else who uses them as well!
very creative!
Love it. My only suggestion would be to start the dots at the green blue transition, and shade the bottom. It would give the mental cue that the “Stars” start about Earth.
Anyway, just a thought and amazing work.
Wow! Holy........WOW! AMAZING!
superb!
This effect would look really cool on an Eldar Farseer's cape
oh my god that effect is jaw dropping
wow...awesome effect achieved simply (albeit time consuming with the dots)
that's one fabulous space elf. thumps up
SICK!
So I tried the toothpick method with my Eldar rangers and here are my findings:
1. I used Leadbelcher from Citadel Paints. It is the most common and I recommend just dipping it from the pot. Thinning it on a pallet will cause the paint to be soaked up by the toothpick.
2: The toothpick works great with the smaller dots, bigger ones on a standard 32mm (I believe that is the right size) are varied with intensity and have to refresh often.
3: For the larger areas, I used my fiance's nail dippers (I call them that). They are metal so clean up is a bit of a pain, and just like the toothpick sometimes the paint doesn't want to come off. For this I recommend taking a past prime detail brush, buzzing it so it has stiff bristles near the end and it should work just the same.
These are just my findings. Granted, I am not using the paints you have suggested.
Amazing
I generally dislike metallics on ~30mm scale figures, but that looks really good.
Wow. This leads to a whole new train of thought-what happens when you put on your intelligent adaptive camo and visit a fashion show? I love it.
Nice work. Next Wizard cloak I Paint Will get this effect.
Thought this was going to be a challenge where you paint only with toothpicks when I clicked on it
Great tip (no pun intended); thank you for this video!
Nice!
That is a spectacular mini paint job! @##$%!!! Beautiful work. 😍
Amazing!]
Wow Doc 😯😯
I love cool colors, but I think that touch of sepia was brilliant.
I'm brand-new to minis-painting, but I can't help but wonder if I could half-ass this with contrast / speedpaints... Wouldn't be near as good, but maybe just good enough for my needs...
Cheers
Great effect! Would look incredible as a skin for an octopus or chameleon lizardfolk to represent their color shifting ability.
This is nice
Im sure I have that model somewhere. Think I will give this a try.
amazing. i wonder how it would look if it was silver and gold dots instead...
cool technique need to try it out
would you recommend varying the metal tones for the dots ( eg silver, leadbelcher, iron warriors?)
Oh man, I was wondering what to do with my sisters of silence. I guess now I know precisely what to consider. Never considered using metallic paints that way though; to make a shimmery material though it makes a good deal of sense. Metallic paint actually gets more interesting when it's used to accent acrylic paints rather then being used by itself sometimes.
the metallics kind of erase the point of the NMM blade, but it looks indescribably good anyway.
If Ziggy Stardust had a cloak ... thats the one. Looks amazing.
Dude, i need that Nick Cage pillow!!!
well never think that got try it some time not bad demmo will see more as new is posted
And the winner for the best dressed inquisitor this year goes to ....... Eric from pontypandy.
Awsome work I use Tooth Picks and Q -Tips to paint all the Time but nothing this small
Is that just totally amazing shading, or is there some color change paint on the sleeves and collar?
I have a request, could you do the star pattern thatbis shown on the box art of Vandus Hammerhand? Specifically his cloak.
Instead of a wire for ultra-fine dots, how about an acupuncture needle? I use one for clearing clogs in my 3D printer's nozzle, seems like it'd be good for something like this.
I'm painting a mini of my Tabaxi barbarian and have been wondering how I'm gonna do her tiger stripes, as well as worrying about doing her eyes. I think this may be useful, I hadn't thought of using a toothpick!
Maybe a thin layer of matte varnish over the silver to get around the hydrophobia?
Cool
That's darn beautiful. Heck of a job too, and yes, a toothpick is surprisingly useful for small details, even if I have a tendency to forget about them...
Byw, how that last figure in the Batman series coming? Is it released yet even?
