  • At last the rain and snow stopped for a day so we can get the Transalp 650 out of the garage and get her started , first time in a couple of months.
She has been on a Optimate battery charger to keep the battery topped up.
As usual it took a few attempts but the reliable Transalp 650 fired up and after a few minutes sat idling nicely.
The Transalp 650 has now 69,000 miles on her and will be getting a full service now ready for the new season.
My motorbike was one of the last Transalp 650's to roll off the production line (registered 2007) before the 700's were produced.
I have had this motorbike since 2008 and I have put 66000 miles on her.
    Awesome Bike

Try, next time, when you cold start it, to don't twist the throttle without key contact. just pull the choke, and when it tries to start, twist a little bit the throttle. i think that you flood the engine with petrol, by doing that. only time my transalp needs 2-3 tryouts to start is when it stays unstarted for a loong time, like 2-3 months. even by winter, i uncover, mount the battery and start at leas monthly. this prevents carburettor get clogged. if you don't start for a long time, it's a good ideea to drain your carburettors and full the tank. but, as 650 transalp doesn't have a peacock with possibility to stop fuel flow, you can't to that so easy.

@@DavidBattistella about your problem with backfiring, i'm not a mechanic, but, i would say that it gets too much gas(due to excesive throttle twist, or bad carburettor. it hasn't time to burn in cylinder, and burns on exhaust...that will be most common faults..

@@adiliviu1386 thanks for the reply. It will do it without giving gas. What about crank case release? Maybe that?

      Hi
Yes normally i do not use any throttle just the choke.
The bike had been sitting for 2 months in shed. And it was -5c so just a little throttle helped fill the carbs (been drained)

transalp doesn't need peacock, fuel will not flow without vacuum from cylinder

Thank you so much for posting this. What did you do between the 1st and third try? I can not see your throttle hand so, did you give more throttle after the first time? I'm having a few problems with backfiring on a cold start.

      I did nothing in between.
Usually the Transalp will start first time with full choke but the bike had been sitting for 2 months (fuel drained from carb) thats why there was a bit of throttle action. Plus very cold that day.

@@LargeWayRound great. I just was not sure if you gave it gas again. The second angle would have shown it, from the rear. I’m having some issues getting mine started, with some backfiring. I’ve replaced the battery but still no go.

@@LargeWayRound Do you have an original toolkit for the 2002? I'm looking at putting a toolkit together. Would you share about your travel toolkit? And maybe your first aid kit as well.

Hi , Its a older style Airhawk seat (large) , they have changed the shape now but the Airhawk Cruiser is about the correct dimensions . Its also the neoprene air bladder which can be repaired with tube repair kit if necessary . I have had the airhawk for about 10 years and 60,000 miles still going strong with just one repair
