I had a 5 pound teacup Maltese dog who was gentle as a lamb & just loved everyone that came into our house. One day I had a TV repair man there who is quite large 6 foot two about 200 pounds. She was fine with letting him in at all , but when he came at me talking & gesturing with his hands out , she must’ve thought it was going to hurt me because, she jumped off my lap & charged at him growling and snarling like a lion. She could have a runaway but she stood her ground & wouldn’t let him near me. I never saw her act like that before or since then. What a precious pup . Although it’s sad someone died. The dogs were doing what dogs do, protecting their territory, also dogs are very smart and in some cases can sense when someone is trouble. I had a really chill dog, very sweet(literally seen her run AWAY from chihuahuas- in her defense they always tried to mount her, which was hilarious to watch as they never succeeded) and she never jumped on anyone, only once did she really get protective of me, I’m rather small she was a retriever, and this guy was a real creep I could tell, and I guess she sensed it too, I’ve heard other stories of dogs trying to warn their owners by displaying unusual behavior by insistingly blocking them from the people who at first looked friendly but turned out not to be and then when the person was eventually in actual danger the dog scared the person off.

The US military refers to their dogs as “fur missiles.” Dogs are adorable, but they are also very protective and have the capability to do a lot of damage. Dogs are a very effective deterrent for most criminals as their barking can easily alert neighbors. Not all dogs are aggressive. I’ve had pit mixes my entire life and they’ve never been anything other than sweethearts. However, dogs read the body language of humans and might have felt threatened. It would be ridiculous to kill the dogs in this case- they were just being dogs.
That being said, it is vitally important to train dogs from the time they’re young to be gentle with most people. Still, even the gentlest dogs with defend their humans at all costs.
I’m 100% certain my dog could do serious damage if she saw I was being attacked.

I do believe the dogs knew the guy was a danger to their master. They were taught to be guard dogs so they were just doing their job. If the guy hadn’t broken into their territory he would till be alive. My husband bought a huge German from a person who was mistreating him so he was not a dog I raised from a puppy. One of my husband’s friends stopped by for no apparent reason so I let him in the house. We were talking at the table when he suggested that I put on some music which I felt was jut a little weird. While we were talking I didn’t see King slowing come over and sat beside me staring at the guest. When he stood up and walked closer to me King began to growl and showed his teeth. The guy decided that he should leave. I found out later that he had attacked other women in their homes using the same technique that he tried with me. King knew the guy was a danger to me and stepped in to stop it. I have no doubt that King would have done major damage if not kill him if he didn’t leave. Dogs have better sense of a bad person before we do. It’s their job.

Every single state has a required quarantine period (10 days) for rabies vector pets that bite someone, regardless of whether the resulting injury is a pinprick or being torn limb from limb. As a ex-K9 handler, there is a *HUGE* difference in a dog biting someone extrovertly and a dog biting someone in self-defense or to protect something or someone.
This is why you can have military- and police-dogs work, and bite, people but still function perfectly in society and family.
Dogs understand home, just as humans do, and they know that it is extremely important to protect. It's an insanely strong instinct in them and been a huge reason we've kept them around. There is absolutely no reason to impound a dog that has defended a home.

When an animal learns how easy it is to kill a human, they will repeat the behavior. Acceptable in war, unacceptable in a civilian zone. I worked with a guy from India. He killed 2 man eating tigers who came around and ate people. Once they start, they do not stop until they are put down.

So, dogs are not like humans. They can actually smell chemicals in our brains let off by our emotions. A dog is going to know if your scared, sad or angry. And most importantly, they can sense wether your intending to harm them or someone they care about.
Admittedly, a used dogs DO struggle with this due to trauma from past experiences. They might often perceive something to be fearful of when they is none. That’s why you hear about abused dogs commonly being more likely to maul people. They’re acting out of fear, not out of malicious intent.
Also not all pits go for the throat, And not all non-pits don’t go for the throat. Dogs are a victim of circumstance. If a dog has been taught to be scared of people and to kill in dog fighting rings and such, then yea, that dog is probably going to lash out if it feels it’s life is in danger. You would do the same thing.
Believe it or not, Felines go for the throat 10x as often as canines. you only don’t hear about house cats killing people outright because of their size, But more people die to cat bite infections than to dog attacks every year. So try to do your research before you judge. Pit bulls are not evil, we as a society have just failed them as a breed by ignoring the fact that criminals have been using them to kill each other for entertainment for so long. Pit bulls where once one of the most loved breeds, and actually where incredibly good with children. It’s our fault that the wrong people where aloud to have these dogs, not the dogs and so the dog shouldn’t have to pay for it. They’ve suffered enough already at the hands of those people.
