I have just bought my a6300 and am brand new to the world of videography, so thank you for helping me through getting my settings right and preventing me from wasting hours and hours trying to figure it out myself.
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment. Don't forget to check out the advanced settings video too - ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html
I actually had already watched both the videos and only now, after the nth time watching this one, I decided to thank you for all the efforts put into such videos!
This was 10 times more helpful than the Gary Fong tutorial I paid $40 for. In his, he just tells you what you can do with the camera but he doesn't tell you what button he's pressing or where to find anything in menus. So, thank you SO much.
Sir, Let me thank you from the bottom of my heart. Its been a month since I got my Sony A6300 and have been shooting only in the auto mode. Very clear and crip tutorial to start with. Thanks again. -Josh
It is the most comprehensive tutorial about a6300 video setting (especially in less than 10 mins.) I have seen so far .As a beginner, I learnt a lot from it. Thank you!
Thanks a bunch for your video! I could not figure out how to get smooth colors and even panning correctly/smoothly. I did my first video and was very unhappy with the results. I went through all of your settings and it looks A LOT cleaner and more professional now. Not only do your settings help but provides the user with opportunities to learn more about the settings you provided in order to understand better any additional personal tweaks. Thank you very much for your time in showing this!
Terrific job sir! I am really thankful for this CONCISE and fast paced overview. I've recently invested in a training video on the whole camera but found it dragged on and on about features I will not use much. I shoot video and I'm really impressed with the quality of your work! Thank you!
Thanks for posting this type of videos, i have been watching everything you post related to the Sony A6300 and A6500. Your amount of detail on the topic is great! I'm a fan of your work.
I felt like I was going to be the only one noting that sony should use you for instructional videos, along with best educational video. Your production, timing, information delegation, cine & editing skills are just top notch. Satisfying as well as if I was in high school being taught by an enthusiastic photography teacher who not only enjoys but employs continual top notch education and hands on help as a hobbyist but better. Definitely subscribing, I learned a lot very quickly with this video.
Hi Maarten. I've commented before regarding how great these videos you've provided here are. I keep returning to this one when I feel I might be forgetting something about my a6300. It's so densely packed with only what's valuable, and with fantastic clarity.
This has certainly been the most helpful video for this camera I've seen, thank you so much! I'll be using one of these on set shortly, and I've been a bit nervous as I've only ever used Canon, but this has made me feel a lot more confident!
Great tutorial! People should learn from this. Is so clear and straight to the point that makes SO MUCH information easy to digest. If you can, please make a video tutorial on Automatic Subject Tracking while recording video. Thanks a million.
I was very impressed by this video. Great information and your delivery was excellent. I tried shooting a video of myself with my A6300 (vlog-style) and it came out terrible. I'm going to try it again once I go through all your tips. Thanks!
great tutorial, thank you Martin. You've made me fall in love with my a6300 all over again. I'm now getting image styles i hadn't yet found (in picture profile), equally applicable to still image taking of course.
Thank you very much for this video, this is exactly the information I needed to start venturing into the video world, found it helpful and not too overwhelming.
Remarkable video tutorial and it came in the right time, add it my favorite bookmarks. I was struggling in some setting like setting custom white balance as it didn't work in movie mode. really appreciated.
Probably not - I'm never all that happy with a lens that ramps the aperture as you zoom in. Although it doesn't zoom as far, I have and enjoy the 16-70.
Wow, when I find such great content, regardless the topic, it suddently comes back how used we are nowadays with bad content and how many amateuer are giving advice and do not invest the time to inform themselves on the topic. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us and for investing the time into such a great production. It was a pleasure to watch your video and I wish you all the best kind sir.
Thank you Maarten one more question shooting a video at 24p with the reg lens that comes with me sony a 6000 camera which I have I would have to change my shutter speed to 1/50? according to the 180 rule and F stop at 2.8 is this correct settings for shooting a video I want to save a setting for memory recall thank you.
It's not really a rule, and truly only applies to cameras shooting film with a rotating shutter. Some film makers want to follow that precisely, so always base their shutter speed on the frame rate. For me, the shutter speed should be low enough to provide sufficient motion blur to make action look smooth - I find that's anywhere between 1/30 to 1/60, regardless of the frame rate - although if you're shooting at 60fps and want to slow it down, you'll get better results by shooting at 1/120. There is no relationship to the lens or the f-stop (although clearly, shooting at 1/60 even with ISO 100 may provide challenges in bright conditions, so you'll need an ND filter.
Thank u soooo much, i always had the problem that i record Videos in M Mode to adjust exposure and shutter. But in M Mode it crops more in. I didnt know that u can switch from automatic to manual in Movie Mode. It took me 3 Months to find the problem and u solved it with ur Video. Thank u so much. :) Sorry for my bad English im from germany :)
The trick is an external recorder connected to the HDMI out. Note that not all screens and activities are available when there is an HDMI cable connected.
Bravo sir. You're a treasure trove of practical, concise and well presented information. I am now getting into the video features of my a6300, and you've given me and others what we need to feel comfortable going forward. Thank you so much.
I was struggling with colour grading and I don't why my footage changing the color every time at the same clip. You gave me the answer when you said "Don't use Auto white balance". Thank you
Thank you for this wonderful video. I spent two hours playing around with it, not knowing a darn thing. Thanks for teaching me a lot! I subscribed to your channel!
In addition to the many other videos on UA-cam about the A6300, here are some of mine: Sony A6300 review ua-cam.com/video/PXTzQPnDx2c/v-deo.html Sony A6300 vs A6000 ua-cam.com/video/5jaSuiRXL1s/v-deo.html Sony A6300 Profiles, Logs and LUTs ua-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/v-deo.html Hope this helps.
Great applause for ur video ... crystal clear explanation for a6300 video settings ... thanks and I’m still learning .... I’m new to Sony alpha series 👍🏽
Why have I not seen your videos before? They are amazing. If you watch them at 1.25 speed you feel like your in the best classroom lecture of your life.
I'm pretty advanced with the a6300, but your attention to extremely detailed video settings is really inspiring me to dig as deep as you have. I've graduated to a level where I can see myself using custom white balance settings in all scenarios now. Thank you for that professional advice. I didn't realize that you can over-ride brightness/exposure manually - but I never have to by utilizing prime lenses, ISO, and low shutter speeds. I stumbled upon this video because I was specifically seeking professional advice on importing XAVCS 4K footage at the highest quality possible without using iMovie anymore. Can you advise me professionally on the BEST methods of importing XAVCS 4K footage on Macs for Adobe Premiere Pro CC, Final Cut PRoX, AND iMovie? (I use all 3) I've been using iMovie because it imports the files and turns them into MOV format which is pretty high quality. The two issues are that iMovie libraries are becoming a hassle to manage (especially outside the software itself), AND I have lost imported footage SEVERAL times with iMovie. After I format the SD cards, if the footage isn't in iMovie like it SEEMED to be, then I get extremely frustrated because people pay me to do this work. As a professional I can't have iMovie tampering with my fate just because I like to film in XAVCS 4K, S-log3 with sony products. Please oh please reply with some expert advice. This is a very unspoken issue around the internet relating to sony's codec. It seems like everyone just gets by however the wind blows with importing XAVCS 4K. It also seems like many people don't bother using 4K and S-log. I want to learn a professional method of importing XAVCS and stick with it for a while. Thank you again for your knowledge and expertise. -Austin
Thanks for the kind words, and the recognition - always appreciated. Have you watched the advanced video? ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html First, I'd recommend that you choose one NLE and stick with it. Secondly, that you not use your NLE's file system as your backup strategy - I make a copy of the SD card(s) from a shoot in a folder before I do anything. I agree with you about iMovie - but it's not a very capable/professional tool - it just tries too hard to be easy for dummies. The best way to import XAVC-S is just to use the File/Import dialog, that will make a transcoded copy for editing. I use FCP X, which finds video files easily. If you are concerned about drive space, you may wish to use "Leave Files in Place" - I do not, drives are cheap. For transcoding use "create optimized media". If your computer isn't fast enough to deal with your files, consider upgrading before using proxy media - I find that more cumbersome. There is nothing wrong with Sony's XAVC-S codec - but please remember that these are NOT pro products. The problem is with the bit depth and the data rate. And the problem with the internet is the noise from people who have a lack of understanding of the technology and their tools. Why would you use Slog? In general, I avoid even SLog2 unless there's no other way to manage the dynamic range of a scene (i.e. I have no options to better illuminate the subject and the background is over-bright). I find that it over compresses the scene, and with 8 bit, it's hard to retrieve any usable quality, and it requires a lot of unnecessary work. Create your colour profile in camera, which saves a lot of time in post - but be prepared to make small adjustments as required. Color Finale Pro is an excellent utility. Hope this helps, happy to continue the conversation.
Your videos are extremely detailed and well instructed! I love them! My only problem is understanding the Sony a6300 slog options - I watched your videos and it’s still a little complicated
@@jarrad5244 In general, unless you're recording on an external recorder, I don't recommend you record with log at all. With only 100Mb to work with, there's not enough data.
Hi mr Maarten, deric from singapore here. mind teaching me how to i unable sony a6300 camera in built mic as i would like to mount my rodelink wireless mic on my camera and use it as the mic for the main audio?
Hi maarten, do u mean i can disable the audio recording by turning on/off? but i tried it and there is no audio bar from the live view after i turn it off while recording the short footage i tried at home :(
This is a fantastic tutorial, thank you! My partner was laughing in the background while I watched this - he was waiting for smoke to start coming out my ears!! I will watch again and again, as I've just purchased this camera and still getting used to the menu system - You have provided many useful tips.. As a test, I shot a video today at midday of the waves breaking, and the white water was totally overexposed, losing detail, so I will look at your tips re ISO and white balance etc.. And could I ask, what is the next best option (price wise) for lenses to use for video, if the cine lens is out of reach?
Thanks, I think. Pretty sure smoke coming out of your ears isn't a good thing? For that kind of over-exposure, you may find some value in using the SLog picture profiles (7, 8, 9). More details here: ua-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/v-deo.html. or here: ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html The 16-70 is workable, the 18-200 is also good (it was the kit lens on the e-mount camcorder series). Or, if you do want (or don't mind) full manual controls, try the Rokinon cine lenses: ua-cam.com/video/U55Dzvz9wR4/v-deo.html
No offence intended! He was referring to me trying to process the information at the same speed you cover the topics.. Your tutorial is excellent, and the most informative one I've found so far, so thank you again, and for the info re the lenses too.. And also for taking the time to respond..
Wow. Really very useful, thank you. I wish I'd found this 2 hours ago instead of the other videos I've trawled through. I am more confident that the A6300 is the camera for me after watching this. From your comment I think I need to look at over heating. I currently have a canon 50D and I when spend the day recording my kids it is pretty much on most of the time. I certainly don't have to think about over heating. I(ve noted the SmallRig work around someone else mentioned in your comments. Anyways... thank you :-)
A pleasure to read your kind words, they're appreciated. Overheating applies mostly to recording 4K video - and you can shoot all day, just turn it off every chance you get.
Hi Maarten, thank you. Really, I looked at hours worth of unhelpful videos. Its looking like the a6300 is the right choice for my channel. I really want to record Japanese temples and shrines in 4K as the colours are amazing. Thank you - Tim
Yes, looks good. I use Final Cut - does iMovie have a 4K output? Are you outputting and then uploading or going directly to UA-cam from iMovie? If the latter, try the former.
Hello Maarten back again just simple question what resolution should I be exporting my videos in that I've recorded with the sony a6000 for best quality
Welcome back. Simple answer - always record and export using the highest possible resolution and data rate. On the A6000 that's XAVC-S, 30p50m (if you're wondering why I don't recommend 60p, it's because the same amount of data (50Mbits/sec) is now being shared over twice as many frames.)
OK Thank you I use Filmora Wondershare to Export my videos. These are my Resolution Options I can choose from before rendering the video and exporting 320 x 240 352 x 288 640 x 480 720 x 576 1280 x 720 1440 x 1080 1920 x 1080 3850 x 2160 4096 x 2160
Amazing! Can you do this for the G7? Maybe have a series of best settings for most popular cameras, or maybe have a series of tips on shooting/setting up the best settings/editing, etc.
Thanks! The G7 was returned after the review ... but I have thought about doing a "best video settings" tutorial every time I borrow a camera. I'll do my best. I'll see if I can write some more tutorials.
Hi Maarten. First of all, thank you so much for putting so much effort onto your videos. I've watched your review, comparison, and video settings for the A6300 and I'm seriously considering it because of your videos. I'm a stills guy and I'm currently using a Sony A77V. I photograph buildings and people during my travels but I recently fell in love with taking videos during travel and editing them. I tried taking videos using my current DSLR but I find it lacking (mainly due to the fact that you can't set your autofocus to auto when the camera is on Manual for video). Also, the total weight of my gear has become quite heavy given that I changed my tripod head from a simple ball head to a fluid video head. That's a kilo to almost 2 kilos. So mirrorless may really be the way to go. I'm a 5 ft tall guy and think to medium built so weight is really a big big consideration for me since I usually walk my way to my destinations during travels to capture more photos/videos. I have the following for my video needs: 1. Benro A48FD with S4 fluid head 2. Rode VideoMicro So here I am on the market for a used A6300. However, I'm not quite sure what lens would I need for travel videography and photography. It would be about 70% stills, 30% video. And may increase slightly in the future. I would mainly be taking snaps and videos of buildings, landscapes, and people doing they're craft. Slow panning, tilting, travel vlog, some time lapse, and some hyper lapse videos will be mostly what I'll be doing. I usually don't want to disturb my subjects that much (but if the need arises, why not) and I mostly shoot at a later time of the day (around noon time to late night). Would appreciate if you could give advise on the lens selection or even the camera selection if you think the A6300 is not fit for my needs. I live in the Philippines and I'm iffy on the overheating issue if it's really that bad. My country is a tropical country. But I don't think I'll be shooting for more than 10 minutes per take though. Thank you and really appreciate that you do take time to read and reply to your comments. Not a lot of UA-cam content creators do that.
Thanks for the kind words, they're always appreciated. My first lens recommendation for an A6000 series camera would be the Sony Zeiss 16-70. It's a high quality general purpose lens - although admittedly Sony's full frame lenses are better quality, I feel this is a nice compromise. I use it a lot. If you are planning to shoot video, particularly in warmer locations, I would recommend that you consider the A6500 instead. I've had the A6300 overheat within five minutes of shooting on a beach in Mexico. Here's my comparison of the two - which includes an overheating test: ua-cam.com/video/iAkRdgnq2nY/v-deo.html Always happy to help, I'm here to answer questions.
Thank you for that information! And I do agree that the A6500 would do great against the overheating issue. And yes, I did watch your comparison video too! :) Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that my budget cannot afford the A6500. I'm looking at $1000 mirrorless cameras. :(
After thinking about it, it makes sense. I also heard that the rolling shutter effect is minimized when shooting in 1080. I guess UA-cam travel vlogs are also usually watched on mobile devices so shooting in 4K might be something over for me. Also I heard that the A6300 captures 1080 video by shooting 4K then downscaling it. Not sure if there is truth to that though.
To the best of my understanding, both of those statements are true. Although I find that when I downrez the 4K footage it's somewhat nicer than Sony's in-camera processing.
Maarten, thank you for this wonderful video! I've been using the A6300 for over a year now without really "knowing" how to use it, you've taught me a lot in those 10 minutes! I've followed your settings and am looking forward to the difference I'll get in the footage, though I did have a question in regards to your opinion for best settings when my primary focus is uploading these videos to UA-cam. When I played around with 4K recording a few months ago, I just scaled it down to a 1080P video in post, but I was using the 30p 100M recording setting and had no issues. What would be your recommendations given that I'm shooting for the direct purpose to upload to UA-cam? My content is usually a set focus point where I'm doing most of the talking, rarely will there be any action or movement, other than hand movement. Thanks again for your video and taking the time to read this :) - Don
Thank you for your kind words. If you've found something that works, my motto is, "Don't fix what isn't broken". I do feel that the 4K recordings sampled down the 1080 in editing are of higher quality than the original 1080 recordings on the A6300 - but I would encourage you to make recordings at both settings and determine which works best for you. If your computer can manage it (and your Internet service package can handle it) I would suggest you just upload the 4K video. Hope this helps.
Thank you for such a detailed and wonderful video really helpful! Do you think this is a good set up the cina lens + a6300 to shoot stills and video in front of a green screen I have a studio with good lighting I just want to make sure that this is the right set up for me
Your kind words are appreciated. Yes, I think that's a good solution - it's one that I've used in the past, although in this video the camera I used to record myself for the green screen scenes was with a Fuji X-T2. Hope this helps.
thanks for this tutorial very easy to follow, concise and thorough and your advanced personal tips/settings at the end were a nice addition. I like how you respond to comments too, very helpful. thanks again Bless

Thanks! I so appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@MaartenHeilbron most welcome, I'm going through your videos now. I'm assuming your cinelens are fully manual?
The Sony cine lens aperture and focus is fully manual, although the zoom is motor assist and can be remote controlled.
Very nice explanation, do you have a similar video for the a7iii, or can suggest another video resource for settings?
Just for you: ua-cam.com/video/9Rh7IDnroPk/v-deo.html

@@MaartenHeilbron Btw. I'm looking for most universal lense for this camera. Do you think Sony 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 is a good choice?
Probably not - I'm never all that happy with a lens that ramps the aperture as you zoom in. Although it doesn't zoom as far, I have and enjoy the 16-70.
@@MaartenHeilbron gonna check that out, thanks again
Always happy to help.
Excellent video! Thank you for being so precise, and putting all that information into such a short video!

That is very kind of you to say, thank you! It's always a pleasure to hear from a viewer who appreciates my work.

Thanks for your kind words, always appreciated. And always nice to hear I've been able to help.
Sorry i have another question, how did u record the menu from the camera? Just with a another camera or is there a trick? :)
The trick is an external recorder connected to the HDMI out. Note that not all screens and activities are available when there is an HDMI cable connected.
Great tutorial. Thorough and to the point.

(I use all 3)
I've been using iMovie because it imports the files and turns them into MOV format which is pretty high quality.
Have you watched the advanced video? ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html
First, I'd recommend that you choose one NLE and stick with it.
What s log settings do you recommend?
That's a fair assessment. What are you trying to accomplish? What have you tried? Did you find this video? ua-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/v-deo.html
@@jarrad5244 In general, unless you're recording on an external recorder, I don't recommend you record with log at all. With only 100Mb to work with, there's not enough data.
I already buy my a6300, and this Review Help me a lot! Thanks from Brasil!!
I appreciate the kind comment - thanks! And greetings Brazil!
Hi mr Maarten, deric from singapore here. mind teaching me how to i unable sony a6300 camera in built mic as i would like to mount my rodelink wireless mic on my camera and use it as the mic for the main audio?
As soon as the plug in the external mic, the internal mic is disabled. It can also be disabled from the menu (camera page 8)
Hi maarten, do u mean i can disable the audio recording by turning on/off? but i tried it and there is no audio bar from the live view after i turn it off while recording the short footage i tried at home :(
Correct, the menu setting disables all audio recording.
More details here: ua-cam.com/video/g5ByPkuhuM4/v-deo.html. or here: ua-cam.com/video/k2ICurq3hso/v-deo.html
The 16-70 is workable, the 18-200 is also good (it was the kit lens on the e-mount camcorder series).
No offence was perceived - a failed attempt at humour on my part. And thank you for your kind words, they are always appreciated.
This video is perfect, loaded with information. Thanks!

Always nice to hear from a viewer who's been helped. Always my pleasure.
Easily one of the best tutorials for this camera
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
That sounds like it would be interesting footage to watch. Please send a link when it's posted.
Looks wonderful, thanks for sharing - I'll look forward to the update.
Yes, looks good. I use Final Cut - does iMovie have a 4K output? Are you outputting and then uploading or going directly to UA-cam from iMovie? If the latter, try the former.
Nice Work Mr Maarten! Regrats from Brazil!
Always nice to hear from Brazil. Thanks for the kind words.
These are my Resolution Options I can choose from before rendering the video and exporting
320 x 240
352 x 288
640 x 480
720 x 576
1280 x 720
1440 x 1080
1920 x 1080
3850 x 2160
4096 x 2160
If you are shooting XAVC-S, you should output at 1920x1080, the same resolution as you recorded.
This helped so much thnx again Maarten!
Always my pleasure
Great video. I did the rookie mistake of filming with slow motion on. Can any of the video audio be recovered?
Thanks. Whoops - well, you can likely speed the footage up, so it's real time, but there is no audio to recover.
Thanks for explaining the reasons behind your statements.
Glad to hear I have given you the information you need.
I keep coming back to this vedio, thanks a million
Glad to hear that, it’s nice to know my work is appreciated!
I have the following for my video needs:
1. Benro A48FD with S4 fluid head
2. Rode VideoMicro
So here I am on the market for a used A6300.
Here's my comparison of the two - which includes an overheating test: ua-cam.com/video/iAkRdgnq2nY/v-deo.html
Always happy to help, I'm here to answer questions.
Thank you for that information! And I do agree that the A6500 would do great against the overheating issue. And yes, I did watch your comparison video too! :)
Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that my budget cannot afford the A6500. I'm looking at $1000 mirrorless cameras. :(
Right. One way to stay away from the overheating problem is to shoot in HD (1080).
Thanks again for your video and taking the time to read this :)
- Don
This is EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!
It's completely my pleasure, it's always wonderful to hear that my videos are appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
