Several years ago, I had bought one of these old service station island oil racks. I did the same rustoleum paint jobs on it, and got the same results. after a week or so,it has dulled out. I then went and scuffed it down I think with 1000 grit, and used rustoleum clear on it, and got a nice shine that lasted. My issues was more with my prep. After a year I started getting bubble from under the paint. It appears that product you used on the fender dried harder than say rustoleum or other rattle can paints? I have a older car which I am planning on painting in a year or two. But I recently had a shop do some engine work on for me, and they used that sticky clear plastic fender cover on. they stuck it on the inner fender they left it on for for like 3 weeks when they pulled it off it took the paint on the inner fender off. Is this UPOL system something I can use to to mask off this area of and do a spot repair?

About 4 years ago I did a rattle can paint job on an old Honda. Everyone is familiar with with 90s Hondas peeling clear coat. We used Aircraft paint remover and carefully removed all the paint. Used a rattle can of light grey primer, 6 pack of red sunrise rattle cans, waited 2 weeks and keyed the paint with 400 grit. Used 2K clear rattle can over the top. Brother, it was perfect... This many years later it still looks like new.
So glad to have just found Kevin on UA-cam. It was a Paintucation DVD I bought probably 20 years ago started me off painting, I’ve lost count on how many paint jobs I’ve now done. A big thanks Kevin from the UK and look forward to watching your videos 👍

I've been dreading a full on pro-paint for the scratches but they do drive me nuts. I watched you paint the motorcycle tank and, in that video, you made the comment, "I don't know why I'm talking so much". I retired from the floor coverings installation trade and, in the course of my career, trained several installers. The constant talking, as you're working, is a very good teaching tool. As your students are watching you work, they are hearing what they are seeing, making understanding much easier. I'm in the final stages of restoring a 1981 Corvette and will soon begin the paint process. I've been surfing U-Tube videos for someone who explains the paint process in a language I can understand and finally found that with your videos. I've never painted a car before, but am confident I'll get the idea from your videos. Thank you for the detailed explanations.

I noticed you used a small screwdriver with the pad for the crevices …I was waiting for it to poke through and scratch the painted surface 😬. My thought was a wood dowel. You can grind the point to fit and have much less risk of creating more work by scratching the surface you are painting. Just sharing my thoughts…I love your content and the fact that you explain processes thoroughly 😁

Upol is the king of coatings, they have an entire line of diy products that actually last. They are far superior than Rust-Oleum and duplicolor, I've been using upol for almost everything and can't beat the quality sure that brand is a bit pricey but man is it worth it lol. Great job Kevin 👍🏼
Those are some amazing results!!! I have to give you kudos for not editing out the dreaded paint glove drip. It truly shows that hiccup’s like those happen even to the pros. It gives us wanna be’s the will to push on and work through it. Thank you for the Great Vids Kevin and keep them coming….
I'm been in the automotive repair business for 45 years I've seen some of the hacks for the spray can paint shaking next time try using two hose clamps it works better. Be safe and keep on doing what you do.
Great tutorial video! Here’s another tip, keep a paper towel in your back pocket, and every so often wipe the spray can nozzle. They have a tendency to build up blobs that can end up dripping into the finish coat.
That finish is amazing. That's perfect for a DIY job on a motorcycle or a 4-wheeler. Hell, if you can get these cans with a variety paint codes, you can blend panels for rust repair/replacement/repair. Very cool. Paint technology has come a long way.
I use Upol a lot and am very happy with it in certain circumstances, kind of like what you are doing in this video. I've had the same issue with my fingertip interfering with the spray. I stopped wearing a glove 🙂. I learned a lot watching this video. Thanks very much!
Kevin, I just like watching your videos. You’re an amazing talent & teacher. I have painted A LOT of stuff over the years. Both with a paint gun & with rattle cans. Nothing professional. Just raised kids that liked to wreck cars etc. Yet I’m always willing to learn & I like how you educate but don’t talk down. I wish for your channel to take off & grow beyond your own imagination. Wife backed into a friends car, hit right in the fender. I was able to use the color match camera at O'Reilly auto for a perfect paint match and then the 2k aerosol clear on it. Turned out amazing, I will freely admit I am a paint rookie, I have only used a spray gun one time in my whole life. I can completely vouch for what Kevin is saying here. You can get an amazing finish on small areas using spray cans. Nice work Kevin, thanks for all of the great content!

I'm into high power rocketry and I've painted rockets with both automotive type paints (2 stage) and rattle cans. The rattle cans give a decent finish and like the tank you did, too many coats causes them to crackle. With rattle cans I found if I need more than 1 coat I let it off gas for a week or two, sand it down smooth and hit it with another coat. Most times I will not have an issue with cracking or delaminating paint. I have sprayed out a rocket with rattle can paint and followed it up with an automotive clear with decent results. I do get delamination of the clear if I don't allow everything to cure for about a month (our launches are 1 a month in good weather). The last rocket I sprayed with rattle can paint and automotive clear delaminated on the 2nd launch but on the first launch the nosecone hit the body tube and scuffed the paint and clear. The clear peeled off on the second flight. Painting with rattle cans is always a crapshoot but with 2 stage I always get really good results. I'm definitely going to try the Upol lineup.

one panel at a time on a low stakes vehicle must be a great way to learn. my only paint experience so far is a small repair on a metallic silver Lincoln Town Car. I used the Duplicolor system that is the color matched paint, primer, and clear. it turned out ok, definitely was not in a prime area for blending so is noticable if you are looking, but doesn't catch the eye in the parking lot. Excited for the next time I do a paint thing after picking up so many bits of knowledge I can apply. Thanks!

Fan-friggin'-tastic, mate! Like you, I could use a plethora of what my kids used to call "Daddy Words" to describe the result, but the proof is sitting there looking right at me and really needs no further embellishment than that.... ....except for maybe the word "WOW" in about 144pt with a dozen exclamation marks! I thought the tank came out well, but as you say, it's now showing its limitations. Looks like it's one of those things you either get right in the application and then let it harden up to look its best, or you miss out and with the knowledge that any form of correction will mean you need to add a finisher every few weeks. The second system looks to be the way to go - and that's great, because I have a car that I need to repair a couple of small panels on and would rather not spend umpty-thousand dollars on the gear, the PPE and the paint etc to do them. Even how it finished up before you sanded and polished the guard looked pretty damn good and to me, would have been good enough.....but wow! Now it will be interesting to see how they keep their gloss over time. Many thanks for showing us this product and how it can be used. It's been an eye-opener for sure! One quick thought - I have another vehicle where the clear coat has left the entire panel and the colour is all that remains. Have you ever tried just prepping that sort of panel and re-clearing it without respraying the colour as well? Because I started thinking that maybe even with a couple of cans of that 'clear coat in a can' it might look better than it does....but I'd hate to make the car look worse! All the best

You can 100% spray, spray max 2k clear over rustoleum. Painted a whole truck with it. It sands and buffs out great too. Painted my truck 6 months ago and no issues. Looks as wet as the day I sprayed it

Great video! The over the counter spray cans are getting so much better. As for shaking the can, your sawsall shaker does work, check out Puddin's fab shop on using it.
They do make a can holder for shaking paint on the old salz-all. Also seen them for cordless drill. I have been using the Upol primer for several years now and it is my go to for rattle cans and the nozzles are pretty good, very similar to the ones on the Clearmax products. The Clearmax 2K cans are awesome by the way, they lay down and absolutely gorgeous coat with little orange peel. I know the PPE is needed but I just use a 3M respirator in a well ventilated area. The Autozones around me do not carry the professional cans of color or clear at all, just primers.

It makes sense that companies started putting adjustable nozzles on their cans. It's a lot easier to control when you get a nice pattern. I really like that color of blue. BTW, you have to be a genuine Okie for the paint can shaker saw to work correctly LOL... Just curious, what does "holy snappin bungholes" mean ? I caught that when you were looking at the fender after you buffed it.. 🤔

Rattle canning vehicles should be illegal. Got a 83 f150 to clean up that someone rattle canned. Grow up its not a BMX petal bike.

Thanks! I have some plastic windshield tools as well, they're rounded on the end, they work well. Wooden dowels would be a good tool!

Same process I used in the 80’s and 90’s on GM lacquer paint spot blending. I had great results!

Kevin; Thanks for this video. It answered many questions I had regarding using Rustoleum paint for automotive use. I think the main point of the video was made near the end when you mentioned it's inherent lack of robustness to UV and gasoline. So naturally I was wondering if it was an acceptable process to apply a 2K urethane based clear over the dried Rustoleum; If that product was compatible with Rustoleum then you would have a paint job which would be durable w.r.t UV and other chemical solvents. I expect the answer is that it won't bond well but many are claiming to have success with this approach (even in the comments here). Your thoughts? Thanks again!

one panel at a time on a low stakes vehicle must be a great way to learn.
my only paint experience so far is a small repair on a metallic silver Lincoln Town Car. I used the Duplicolor system that is the color matched paint, primer, and clear.
it turned out ok, definitely was not in a prime area for blending so is noticable if you are looking, but doesn't catch the eye in the parking lot.
Excited for the next time I do a paint thing after picking up so many bits of knowledge I can apply. Thanks!

I love using rattle cans for guitars they are cool looking and wont see the outdoors much so its a great option for that
That clear looks good! I was trying to decide between Dupli color clear or upol but this looks way better than Dupli color others review on UA-cam
Fan-friggin'-tastic, mate! Like you, I could use a plethora of what my kids used to call "Daddy Words" to describe the result, but the proof is sitting there looking right at me and really needs no further embellishment than that....
....except for maybe the word "WOW" in about 144pt with a dozen exclamation marks!
I thought the tank came out well, but as you say, it's now showing its limitations. Looks like it's one of those things you either get right in the application and then let it harden up to look its best, or you miss out and with the knowledge that any form of correction will mean you need to add a finisher every few weeks.
The second system looks to be the way to go - and that's great, because I have a car that I need to repair a couple of small panels on and would rather not spend umpty-thousand dollars on the gear, the PPE and the paint etc to do them. Even how it finished up before you sanded and polished the guard looked pretty damn good and to me, would have been good enough.....but wow! Now it will be interesting to see how they keep their gloss over time.
Many thanks for showing us this product and how it can be used. It's been an eye-opener for sure!
One quick thought - I have another vehicle where the clear coat has left the entire panel and the colour is all that remains. Have you ever tried just prepping that sort of panel and re-clearing it without respraying the colour as well? Because I started thinking that maybe even with a couple of cans of that 'clear coat in a can' it might look better than it does....but I'd hate to make the car look worse!

You can 100% spray, spray max 2k clear over rustoleum. Painted a whole truck with it. It sands and buffs out great too. Painted my truck 6 months ago and no issues. Looks as wet as the day I sprayed it

The rattle can paints and rattle can clear coats have definitely stepped up in quality in the last couple of years.

Great video! The over the counter spray cans are getting so much better. As for shaking the can, your sawsall shaker does work, check out Puddin's fab shop on using it.

They do make a can holder for shaking paint on the old salz-all. Also seen them for cordless drill. I have been using the Upol primer for several years now and it is my go to for rattle cans and the nozzles are pretty good, very similar to the ones on the Clearmax products. The Clearmax 2K cans are awesome by the way, they lay down and absolutely gorgeous coat with little orange peel. I know the PPE is needed but I just use a 3M respirator in a well ventilated area. The Autozones around me do not carry the professional cans of color or clear at all, just primers.

Put the rattle can in a bowl of warm water prior to spaying to raise the pressure in the can to smooth out the fan.

It makes sense that companies started putting adjustable nozzles on their cans. It's a lot easier to control
when you get a nice pattern. I really like that color of blue.
BTW, you have to be a genuine Okie for the paint can shaker saw to work correctly LOL...
