  • Once making up 61% of American 4-6-4 locomotives, the New York Central Hudsons were the most iconic steam locos in the USA. From their early days of hauling 21 carriages over the NYC subsidiaries, to the stunning Dreyfuss streamlining that made them the very model of a modern Art Deco piece.

      Well, technically the diesels actually replaced all steam engines on the 20th century limited And

    Fun Fact: Lionel Electric Trains made the 700E Hudson which was the most detailed and very-prototypical version of the NYC Hudson. Lionel Cowen also loves the NYC Hudson

    The Hudsons are the best locos of The New York Central, I wish there was a Hudson Trust so that there would be a real life replica of The Hudson, either The regular or a streamlined hudson

      I mostly agree. But the New York Central Niagara or Mohawk are better locomotive

      If I recall correctly, the T1 trust seriously considered building a New York Central j3 Hudson before they decided on the PRR T1 and chose a name for their trust. Who knows, maybe they’ll regroup and start work on a j3, when the T1 5550 is complete.

      What I really want to see is one of the surviving Mohawks restored to working order. The Mohawks were the most numerous of the Central's steam locomotives and were also among the finest examples of the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement.

    Fun fact: there is one remenent of the Hudsons left in existence in Steamtown Pennsylvania, there is a NYC Auxiliary Tender, which was rebuilt from a Hudson's Tender, so while the class no longer exists, at least we have something to remember them by

    The J Hudsons were truly iconic. Even the Niagaras were overshadowed by these locomotives when they were made after the War. They ran 20,000 miles a month so they were as reliable as they were iconic. Alvin Staufer wrote a pretty darn nice book 50 years ago detailing them with even an interview from the late Paul Kiefer himself telling him about his time working on them.

    Great video! Although there's a few points I wanna mention.
    -Regarding streamlining, de-shrouding was mostly done after WW2.
    -The picture used to show NYC 4-8-4's was the prototype, which failed horribly lol.
    -Hudson's were rarely used on freight, during War Time it was a thing but afterwards not so much. There's a handful of clips around of them pulling freight (the most famous is the N&W coal drag shot), but like I said it was extremely rare.
    Other than those points, a very good video!

    Interesting note about the "Dreyfuss" Hudsons, is that there were technically 11 of them. Given the problems of 5344's Commodore streamlining, it was re-equipped with a nearly identical streamlining to that of the 10 J-3a's, with the only visual difference being a slightly different running board on the J-1e. I believe this makes it one of two instances of a steam locomotive being streamlined twice, and for two different services. Rather than going back to pulling the Vanderbilt, or joining the Super Hudsons on the Century, the 5344 was mostly used on the Mercury streamliners.
    The same fate was also shared with the two J-3a's streamlined for the Empire State Express, and at least one of them even had its cowl "rebranded" for the service

    If you want more north American ideas, the Southern Pacific GS-4 and Union Pacific FEF classes would be good ones, with Union Pacific FEF-3 844 having never been retired, or there's the Canadian Pacific semi streamlined Royal Hudson, 2850 hauling the Royal Train across Canada in the 1930s without failing, such a feat that the royals let the locomotives be adorned with the Royal crown, or If you don't want another Hudson, Canadian Pacific also had semi streamlined 4-4-4 Jubilee types, and semi streamlined 2-10-4 Selkirk locomotivs. The are also articulated engines like the C&O H-8 2-6-6-6, or if you want diesels, the EMC EA/EB, E1, and E2 (all relatively the same, just different names for different railroads), and electric engines you have stuff like the Milwaukee Road Bi-Polar or the Little Joe locomotives
    But that was a really good video, and bringing focus to the majority of their work instead of the minority who were streamlined is a very fresh take on the class

      Maybe they could build on from scratch like the English have been doing with some their famous steam locomotives that were scrapped. Check out the locomotive Tornado, remade, then later later officially clocked at 101 mph. Speaking of speed the the NYC Hudsons were reputed clocked at 123 mph.

      @@MysteriousStrangerVA Never say never. If we can has PRR T1 be built from scratch and a Union Pacific Big Boy rebuilt to operation, a new build Hudson isn't a far off pipe dream. It's just a matter of getting together the right team of people and tackling the challenge head on in a professional manner and doing everything right. And with the sheer amount of times the idea of building a new Hudson has been floated over the years, it wouldn't surprise me if the PRR T1's completion and success winds up inspiring the right folks to start work on a new NYC Hudson. Wouldn't surprise me if the T1 inspires people all over the continent to start looking at the idea of building new steam locomotives through a much more viable lense.

    Nice video. The "Pacific" and New Zealand link is almost certainly a myth. Alco suggested the common name in 1904, after supplying the type to three roads in the US with Pacific in their name - including Missouri Pacific as the first US road to use the type. The others were Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific, and Northern Pacific. The earliest mention of the New Zealand connection is in the 1930s.

    Well if you're interested Scott, I have two famous pairs of American 4-4-0's you could look at for the series. The first pair is Central Pacific Jupiter and Union Pacific 119 which were the engines in the famous Transcontinental Railroad photograph and have quite the history. The second pair are Western and Atlantic Railroad's General and Texas locomotives as both were involved in the Great Locomotive Chase during the American Civil War.

    Great video. I've been following your channel for a while now and I'm excited to see you discuss a New York Central locomotive. I grew up along the former New York Central in Upstate New York, so I'm always on the lookout for Central-themed content.
    EDIT: Interesting note about the Berkshires. While the most well-known fleet of Berkshires were the Van Sweringen Berkshires (those being the Berks owned by the Nickel Plate, Chesapeake & Ohio, Pere Marquette and Wheeling & Lake Erie), the Berkshire wheel arrangement actually originated on the Central's Boston & Albany subsidiary. The name "Berkshire" comes from the Berkshire Mountains, a chain of mountains in Western Massachusetts and home to the legendary Washington Hill.

    Hey you got a fact wrong. The super Hudson is not the streamlined version. The super Hudson have longer tender then the other Hudson.

      In fact we're both wrong, the Super Hudsons *were* the J-3as, don't quite know how I didn't spot that during production. Oops!

    It can completely be brought back. The j3a (Dreyfuss Hudson) plans I’m pretty sure are still around. And since there’s a group of people bringing back a prr class t1 a Hudson would be a walk

    I didn’t think to talk about some interesting things I’ve heard about the hudsons in my previous comment, so I’ll do it here. From what I’ve gathered, there were multiple attempts to preserve a Central Hudson, and in fact we do have part of one around today. The Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo railroad of Canada was jointly owned by the Central and another Canadian road, and it was not a big surprise when they got two former Central Hudsons. They lasted for about the same amount of time as the normal Central hudsons, but unlike them, a tender from one of them ended up at Steamtown. Originally, the Owner of Steamtown had wanted a NYC Hudson, but the last one, #5452, was scrapped before he could buy it. Overall a shame, but hey, he got CP 2816 instead! hope you all find this interesting.

      I can confirm at least part of this: in 1962 I spoke with Nelson Blount, who told me that he attempted to buy a Hudson locomotive from the NYC, but they refused to sell one to him.

    Alfred Edward Pearlman, the president of New York Central gave the order to scrap all of the Hudsons and the Niagaras because the railroad was struggling to stay afloat and they needed money to keep the company from going bankrupt. Atleast a few New York Central locomotives like NYC 999, the Mohawks 3001, and 2933 survived.
