- Palworld is out in early access, and it's actually not bad. For such a dumb concept as "Pokemon with guns", the devs pulled it off somewhat well. Unfortunately, it's a survival crafting open world game, which I don't like. So, let's break it down in this review, analysis, buzzword.

Some of you need to actually watch the video before commenting. I actually like the game, in spite of its flaws, but I'm still going to call a spade a spade.
I understand that most people hate Gamefreak/Nintendo for churning out soulless sequels so you praise Palworld for actually doing something different with the monster catching formula, but it's still an early access Ark clone from a company that hasn't even finished its last game. You have to still look at this game with a critical lens and not just pretend it's awesome to own the libs or whatever cringe take we're going with.
I remember when early access games were rightfully despised because most of the time, they were buggy pre-alpha shovelware that never gets finished. Palworld is better than most of those but it's so derivative and the monster designs are a mixed bag so I can't shill this game.
I hold nothing against those who enjoy this more than me. Gamefreak needs competition to incentivize innovating their tired formula but I guarantee Palworld will be forgotten unless the devs consistently update the game.
Edit: Yes, I missed the feed bag in the tech tree. That removes one of my minor problems with the game. Adjusting hunger/exp in world settings feels like cheating though. Like setting the game to easy mode.

First time you have made a coherent post, the game looks like dawnlands, open world zelda rip off i played on my phone, with the same level of jank and the mobile ish looking ui.

The correct take. Game is poke'slop. Looks like dogshit, the esthetics are all over the place and the pals look mad out of place with the world.
Game freak has been turning out such consistent garbage in the pokemon franchise that a slightly fresher piece of trash gets all this undeserved praise lol.
See you keep harping on about it being "Early access" but on the flip side, it doesn't FEEL like an early access game. This game has felt more complete in my opinion than most Triple A games. Do I need to point out cyberpunk? The game that was full released but played 10000x worse than this indie game? By that logic, any Live service game is still considered "Early access" since more stuff is being added to them. Is Baldur's gate 3 still an early access? Is Apex legends, or cyberpunk or Overwatch 2 or league of legends still early access? I've so far put 51 hours into it and I'm only level 32 and still discovering things. That's a lot more than I can say for most games nowadays.
to be fair you expect to much form people with a click baity title that makes it seem you really hate it. of course people with click on the video and go strait to leaving a comment ..even more with how heated the conversation is with this game
A game made by amateurs for the cost of a ham sandwich being more popular than games made by hundreds of people with development and marketing budgets larger than the GDP of some countries is really, really funny. Whether Palworld is a fad or not it's put the fear of God in some Nintendo shills.
it will be a fad if the people behind the game itself doesn't capitalize off the hype at all, especially with the hype the big youtubers have been giving it in the first place.
Indie gaming has always been better than AAA slop since mid 2010s, the fact games like Gmod and Terraria are the highest rated games on steam says a lot.

Look at Riot Games laying off 500 people, which is 10% of their staff in 2023, a company that started by making a clone of a game that started as a Warcraft 3 mod. Sure, they also made a shooter with similarities to a certain Blizzard shooter as well, but why the Hell did they ever need 5000 people to do those two things?

The funniest part is watching AAA devs getting angry at this game, even some Naughty Dog devs are pissed at it. Guess spending 300mil on a crappy movie like game hated by everyone while a low budget Pokémon with guns game is being loved by so many people are making them go crazy jealous. lol

I hate when they make that crappy excuse. Ya we do know it's hard but they also have a massive budget and tons of people working on the game and often it will still turn out to be shit. Meanwhile the indie dev will have 1 person or a small handful of people working on the game with a fraction of a big triple a budget make a better game. I mean it disgusts me that in a PR sense we now have these companies fighting against the consumer now and throwing shade at smaller more talented developers. I really think that's what alot of the hype is about more then the actual game. I don't understand adults being into things like pokemon to begin with. For me I stopped playing around 7th grade in 2003.

What I love most about this game is that it made Naughty Dog literally seethe because this stole all the attention from TLOU2 Remaster.

It makes sense, a remaster like this is very minor but is considered huge news because they added a 10 dollar roguelike (or lite idfk) mode
The LEAST thing they coulda done is take use of their advanced rope physics to make stuff more interesting but nah, throw away all that effort on 2 minute puzzles in the main game

the big companies give lots of ad money and tons of perks to get those good reviews. It's one of the reasons the media was so vicious against gamergate and did all they could to paint them as monsters. It's because the core narrative was true.

Actually alot of the pals are relevent once you go into work types.
Sometimes you might want a weaker mon that doesnt need to be fed as much in order to keep your base efficient.
The fact that stronger pals require more food, and also that different pals have different work attributes really means that even if a pal sucks at combat it still may hold utility in the workforce.
Its very refreshing because in pokemon a weak mon is a usless mon
With breeding, there's no such thing as a bad Pal. Literally lol you can get a Lamball, the weakest of the weak beginner level, first-thing-you-see Pal and breed the right traits onto it (may take a lot of different Pals and mixing/matching quiet a bit, but it's worth it) and it'll be whatever u want. Strong, fast, good defense, anything. I just bred a Jetragon with Legend, Divine Dragon, Ferocious and Musclehead which gave it the most attack it can get from traits alone. Then I wanted a fast one, so I bred one with Legend and Divine Dragon again, but also Swift and Runner which give it an extra 50% movement speed together. I have an Anubis that has been maxed out through condensing and the statue and has good traits which give it 514 Work Speed if you also turn up the pace to Moderate at the podium and feed it a Dumud food plate thing which boosts its work speed and also have the base boosters that boost kindling/cooling/mining etc. All that together and he has more work speed than 7 regular Anubis's (they come with 70) lmao. So yeah, for anyone reading this... make sure to breed. The game literally encourages it by rewarding you for collecting 10 of each type. When you're done with getting 10 of each, you can then use those to either condense or pick which ones to breed and pass on traits. They're useless without breeding unless you get extremely lucky and catch what you want with exactly what you want it to have.
I'm having more fun with Palworld then I've had in years with Pokemon.

Imagine going and dumping hours into making and editing a 19 minute video to review the game and you didn't even scratch past the very beginning of the game. Lmfao
It doesn't work well. I've seen my character use it, but he only ate one and I was half starved. I've never seen my Pals use it.
Regarding attachment to your pals. Sure you can treat them like shit. But you can also customize them with skills and through breeding. Personally, I really get attached to the Pals I customize myself for exploring and traveling, also their ridiculous antics when something glitches out and their unique animations give them so much personality that I was really missing in the common Pokemon games.
Why would I want to treat them badly or over-work them? Happy pals are better workers. Give them hot tubs and yummy bonus-enhancing food. They love cotton-candy and you can farm that.

Some people out there treat their cars better than their own children. Just because you have the freedom to, doesn't mean you should or it's even a good idea to be an asshole.
It's hard to get attached to a specific one you caught (like your first pal) because their passive skill could be shit. They become condense material.
But I do have specific monster look that I like and want them to be on my team. I really like that scorpion and beetle one. They just look cool.

Second, the whole idea of a video game is you have choice without real life consequences, whether you want to be a cruel villain, virtuous assassin, hero, corrupt hero, or whatever you want to be, you can be it, even if that's not how you would act in real life. Which is why I think it's odd you're making the comparison to begin with, why?
My thoughts on gaming and specific content:
The whole thing devs should do is enable choice while keeping a balance of what's fair and what's fun. There is always a way to balance something into a game, but developers won't do it usually, because it requires work they don't want to do that branches into more work. The only exceptions to this I can think of are explicit visual acts like sex and sex related crimes and discrimination, gore and self harm, glorification of slavery and genocide, and depictions of realistic suicide. however that's just 18-21+ because at that point people should have a basis to know these things have no place in the real world or at the very least publicly.
Thoughts on palword:
Palword is at an odd spot because we use pals like farm animals and some pals have specific things and quirks they do that you could consider usable for chopping wood, or menial tasks, but you can make them into food when they get "old", some you keep for sentimental value or a unique benefit like a dog, cat, horse, or other pet. So, vegans would have a fit on the conceptualization of this, but it's also just hidden in Pokémon as opposed to openly shown in pal world.

Indeed. While I dislike the lack of originality in the creature designs in palworld, I hope the success of this game gets nintendo and gamefreak mad enough to finally get off their lazy rear ends and make a pokemon game that actually feels brand new for the upcoming nintendo console.
We can hope, but I highly doubt Palworld will stay in the spotlight long enough to make a difference. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Honestly. It's not trying to be innovative, but thats fine. It fills its niche and for what it is, it's fun to play. And if im honest. I think it does the survival creature tamer better than ark. I hated having to sit around for three hours making sure my dino doesnt die or wake up or run out of food.

Pokemon stole their entire concept from Megami Tensei. They never even address why Pokemon can go into computers because then it would be blatantly obvious.

you have to remember, crafttopia was called zelda with crafting. then a few years latter, actual zelda with crafting (tear of the kingdom) came out. now if this going to force gamefreak to do the same with pokemon, I would say this game is contributing tremendous value to the gaming industry

Humorously, thats exactly how the CEO develops. He follows the trends, and what is popular then makes a derivative based on what he observes. Thus Palworld and Craftopia happened. Though Palworld seems to have hit the wave perfectly.
Concerns over the EA abandonware dread for craftopia is still real though. The reviews for that are mixed atm because fans for it are worried they are gonna get shafted.

It seems kinda weird to bounce between "This is not a Pokemon clone, its an Ark clone" and then criticizing the game for it's lack of Pokemon-esque mechanics like trainer battles and evolutions, but that's just my 2 cents.

But stuff like that is cool when u collect monsters. I think it's a valid criticism. They're obviously ripping off designs from Pokemon. At least try to add on stuff that made pokemon games want you to keep playing with certain pokemon u collected, such as seeing them evolve over time and have different designs.
With how much money they made here they might go back to Craftopia. Or perhaps this is a repurposed Craftopia.

Yeah, this felt like the most irrational and lackluster game review I have ever watched. It was like listening to a friend rant about why he doesn't like a game, not someone that supposedly does this for a living.
What's more of a scam? A $30 game that actually gives you what it shows you, or a $100 game that gives you the opposite of what all the Reviewers tell you it's like?

See, that's the one problem I have with Synth. He'll trash these AAA "games", rightfully so. Then, in the same breath, say Indie games are just slop. Most of the best games I've played in the last decade are nothing but indie. Enter the Gungeon, Rogue Legacy 1 and 2, Moonlighter, Loop Hero, Nova Drift, 30XX, Fight Knight (Highly recommend that one for you Punch Out fans) I could keep going. If Synth honestly believes that there's "no good indie" games, it's because he refuses to lower his own standards. Not because they're "slop".

I've enjoyed Palworld with some friends, but my biggest problem with it is how unpolished it is. Honestly it feels horrible to play some times, but it's an early access game so that's expected

I actually like the simple type system. After the 6th gen, I got tired of keeping track of fairy vs dark vs ghost vs dragon vs water vs fire vs electric and etcetera.
True, that kind of stuff gets ridiculous. Breeding in pokemon is similar in some games. It's just, like, homework.
A complicated type system is only there to give turn based battles depth. It doesn't work that well in action games as everyone just defaults to the neutral jack of all trades type.
As a person who has completely memorised type matchups of pokemon and play competitive online battles daily, i would say that it is not much difficult thing to remeber that.

I like that you can automate mostly everything in base kind of like a factorio-lite
The issue with the hunger mechanic is mitigated by the food bag items you can unlock in the tech tree. Basically it lets you put food into a food slot on your inventory, then once you or one of your pals get hungry, it automatically eats the food. I haven't had to worry about me or my pals' hunger in a while. I ran out of food at one point, and had to put more food into the bag, but that was it. The AI accusations are unfounded. For one thing, the first trailer for this game released in 2021, before the AI boom, and secondly, according to Steam's TOS, you have to say whether AI was used in the creation of your game's assets, and Palworld has no disclaimer on Steam. You also level up a lot faster from catching pals in general, not just counting the exp bonus you get from catching 10 of the same kind. You can also technically catch humans at any time.

Pretty decent slop i would say. I'm currently addicted to it but if the devs don't finish it then I'll eventually grow bored of it real soon.
They seem to have caught on to the fact that this got seriously popular and hopefully have a fire lit under their butts to fix it. This is their lucky break.

Well they are still updating Craftopia, even though people say it's abandoned. They actually released another update for it 3 days after this game released, followed immediately by a hotfix to stop pals from getting stuck so much in base and the jank from them trying to pick up and juggle items.
I see these devs doing things slowly. (Very slowly, but still)
And if or when it ever gets actually finished, i applaud them.

My problem with the pals designs has less to do with "stretching copyright" and more to do with the lack of creativity. I look at a lot of the Pals designs and think "Thats all you could think of?"
I mean, with the few people they have, it'd be easier to stay safe. Especially with each one having their own animations - which is great. I mean, theres only so much you can make with these types of creatures that hasnt been done already. It's simple and fun. I agree, tho. I hope they take the cash they've made and drop some more designs.

All the designs in this 100% started with the main goal of "how do we make a pokemon?" Instead of "how do we make an interesting monster?"
The problem isn't that it copied from Pokemon, the issue is they ONLY copied from Pokemon, the correct way to "steal" for design is to look at multiple games/movies, and take different aspects to make something that can stand on its own

What fucks me up is that Nintendo fans have a long history of having their fan projects taken down by Nintendo for infringing on their intellectual property, acting like they're the victim even though Nintendo has the law on their side, yet for some reason they're completely in favour of Nintendo actually taking action against some copycat because it has some Pokémon influence. You'd think that with everything they've been through, they'd be more in favour of supporting competition than letting Nintendo have all the fun.

If anyone was wondering, the only bugs I've experienced are regarding pal pathing in the base. They get stuck sometimes. Just have to put em in the PC and pull them out. Outside of that, it's pretty freaking smooth.
I've had issues with pal's being able to access facilities, like having the feed box on a corner of a foundation being completely inaccessable to Drilltoise's. The pathfinding needs immense improvement, but also the collision of the game, it wasn't uncommon for Pals/humans to just fall through the world or clip into walls. Great game, glad it came out

I got shot by a boss while at 1hp and that sent me through all terrain to the literal edge of the map. There are issues with this game for sure, but unless you lose a lucky Pal 'cause it glitched through a wall most bugs seem harmless.

About the hunger. you can actually turn it off in the world (save) rules. Increase exp multiplier. etc. in the game menu itself.
Edit: Also they dropped road map and it says they gonna work on AI, hopefully earlier than later.
Yeah, adjusting your world settings is also a part of playing ARK which is default balanced for multiplayer

I think what brings it above your average survival crafting game is being able to create your own automated base with your pals working.
And I find the exploration a lot of fun. The team based battles with your 5 pals is different as well. Even the system of elemental weaknesses and strengths add something to the battles.

The AI accusation is entirely because the dev doesnt hate AI. Not only was AI not really a public thing when this game started development, the lead Pal designer used to make Fakemons for fun, and used some of their favorite old work for the game

the thing is, "asset flip" "rip off" or not... why does an early access "unfinished" game feel WAY better than anything ive seen out of an triple A developer in YEARS, maybe even DECADES? This unfinished early access asset flip rip off of nintendo (not really) is the most compelling game ive played in a very long time, And i am hardcore into survival games, played the shit out of Ark, even played the shit out of Atlas, with all its problems. Even played the ultra hardcore Wurm online, where you really have to be into the headspace to enjoy the grindfest with 1990s graphics. and this game is better than all of those so far, and im not even playing multiplayer yet.
I really hope the Palworld developers have a legal defense plan, and dont plan to just run away into hiding when the lawyers come knocking. This game needs to be defended because it took all the ideas of 15 different games and combined all the good ones to make something that is actually compelling for once.

The first glider is definitely slow and low quality, but there are upgrades and pals which drastically improve it. I'm level 30 and my glider pal is really fast and very useful.

ive played 60 hours already, and had just ONE encounter with a human (single player, npc) on one of the badguy teams, that as soon as he saw me, threw out a ball and it was the lizard with the hood, and after i ko'd the trainer, i stole his pal

Battlebit was getting the same hate when it released. It was literally prime battlefield with Lego skins and that game is growing too. People are tired of the lack of creativity from these companies that have no competition.

The problem is that connsoooommmers are like chipmunks. They have ADD like rodents. They have such a short attention span and impossible standards for such short attention spans. Its a nigh impossible task to sustainably keep something “the new hotness” with the modern audience. Palworld has the ball atm, but it will likely fade with time then people will go back to shitting on it like they do with everything in existence.

I myself stopped playing it after seeing how little vehicle gameplay there is and how even when 90 explosions are going on around you and people dying left to right it's still not immersive in the slightest. No voicelines, no "we are losing B", no motivational speeches, no destruction which really changes how a level is played, terrible explosions and terrible smoke...

Even coming from one of those types of developers, it's amazing how with a little creativity, player freedom, and mixing some ingredients from various types of games, and using some colorful inspiration, you can really show how trashy the gaming industry is right now, some random developers kicking the ass of triple A studios is always good to see.

Funny you mentioned SMT, I was playing this and there is in fact a fuse mechanic, the breeding system is that, if they are the same species the result is the same species, if they are different species the result is a completely different one, but being a survival crafting game it takes time, both to create and egg and to incubate unless you disable incubation time.
I dont mind the hunger system. I have a berry farm and got thousands of berrys. Just take 100 of those whenever i leave base 😁
No evolution sucks. Combat definitely needs work. And there needs to be more stuff to explore, like find a cave with a boss at the end. There also needs to be more quests. And the building is extremely buggy.
Because of these issues then I cant see people staying with this game for very long. I also don't trust these developers not to just abandon it once it starts to die out.

With progression, you can just adjust the XP amount in the world settings. Bump it up to 1.5-2x and you’re good to go
How far do you have to progress to be able to change the XP amount?

I agree with many of your points. The customer cattles have created this issue that's been used as profit generation from a once recognized gaming development community.
I miss the days of cartridge games where live patches weren't a thing, which inherently ruined games.
The game has potential, but it's pathetic a crash ridden patchwork indie crew puts together a game exceeding levels of AAA games, but that bar is extremely low if we're honest. The bad consumerism promoted these things as a company would be foolish to waste time completing a game when people purchase based on FOMO over logic.
Just looking at the top played games shows 90% are rated less than 3/5 or 50% approval. Pure fomo addicted consumers, masochists.

How many different pokemon are there? I think, at this point, it's difficult to do a fantasy animal design that doesn't have *some* correspondence with a few pokemon.
They did hit the mark on the art style of gamefreak. But as a huge pokemon fan. They did not copy and paste anything. These are original models, heavily inspired by pokemon designs. They look like they could be pokemon, and that was the point in their design i believe. They want it to feel familiar.
The ability to automate the most boring part of early access openworld survival crafting already puts it leagues ahead of them. I really hated resource runs at late game
I'm waiting awhile. I hate Early Access, but if this company has a habit of never leaving EA then I might end up just never getting it. I'm also just kinda tired of survival games, I don't hate them but I'm just kinda bored by it. I also feel like not all the assets here are really jiving together, like the environments have these realistic textures but the monsters are these big colorful anime things. The environments should have been a little bit more cartoonish. Definitely something I might pick up if it's like 50% off, because I can't see myself doing much more than just dicking around with it for a weekend.
This was a fair critique. Perhaps there are some things that might sound a bit negative, but they are still good points to be aware of, and I appreciate the information.
Personally, I really love this game right now, but yeah, I could also easily get tired of it if this is all it remains as. It's certainly fun! There is a lot to do and explore and catch, but as it was pointed out that will only last for long. I just hope the success this is getting does drive the developers to further the game and really polish up things, hell, with over 7 million downloads on Steam alone, I hope they can also expand on ideas and maybe introduce some new stuff along the way, but they should definitely bake the cake completely before they try adding frosting.
All in all, I really like this game, best $30 I've spent and it is amazing that the game provides such a massive playground to just mess around. The chores to level up are a bit annoying for sure though. Mining for ore is currently the worst part, and that's just to have resources, but even so, it still is fun to figure things out. I hope they set up for interconnectivity and even transportation for materials between bases. That'd help a lot.
There's a lot of potential here for a Pokémon Survival, and I hope they really delve into that.
