REALLY interesting to hear about how so little light is needed to affect sleep! Can't believe that. I go to the extent of listening to podcasts by candlelight before sleep to avoid any blue light and extra light levels (does seem to help my sleep delay getting worse) & I have blackout blinds, but listening to this video made me realise that I've got an extension cable with a light on it in my bedroom, I am going to cover that up tonight with some tape for def!! That was awesome info.
I just restarted cold showers, can't do more than 45 seconds or I get super cold an hour later and can't warm up again, but 45 seconds works great, and I swear it helps me a bit over time. Less anxiety.
Did a couple of Epsom salt baths ages ago and had a great night's sleep, but I'd totally forgotten about them, so that's great, back on the shopping list. Def need to try that again.
And I definitely think that screen time thing applies to me! I sometimes get too sucked into stuff and don't get enough rest breaks in, also I've found that variety throughout the day is much better than watching tv all day when I'm bedbound, seems to tire me out less swapping between different activities.
Some stuff that worked for me: watching nature walks amongst trees n stuff on you tube, ASMR videos, that breathing where you do 4, 5 7 breathing for just a few breaths helps, and splashing my face with ice cold water/flannel. Good luck comments people. Thanks Miguel! Super useful video for me.

Hey Kate! Yes, I was shocked when I heard about that experiment where they shined light the size of a quarter and it made a different in the quality of sleep! Then I got an eye mask and heavier curtains and I did notice a huge difference in the "depth" of sleep that I was getting.
Nowadays I'll actually only go about 20 seconds with cool/cold water but I find even that's enough to make difference. I need to work my way back up to 45-60 seconds! Essentially, the longer you can last in the shower (and faster your body gets accustomed to the cold) the stronger your parasympathetic nervous system is. So it's something one must train.

@@cfsrecovery Maybe I'll try doing a really slow increase for the shower then. Last time I think I jumped from 30 second's to 45 and then straight up to a minute, so perhaps if I do 5 or 10 second intervals and do it over a much longer time period I might make it to a minute too! :) It feels amazing when you just get out too. Love that feeling. Anyway, thanks for the tips!

Cutting out the sugar was huge for me. As a matter of fact I cut carbs out almost completely. Going on the keto diet has been the biggest single thing to get me functional again. When CFS took away by ability to exercise I ended up gaining a total of 75 lbs. Ended up with full on metabolic syndrome. From a very fit 50 year old to high blood pressure, high blood lipids, non alcoholic fatty liver and prediabetes within 2 years. Keto helped me get back to my pre CFS weight and returned my blood markers to normal. Great information in this video Miguel. I have just started your guided imagery techniques, thanks so much for what you do.

Keeping a fan running helps me, having the room dark and cooler helps. Going to bed around 10:30 helps, it seems like if I go to sleep at 11:00 or after I don't get much sleep. I wouldn't suggest using ear pods or having anything near your head. Turn off all wifi and get rid of it completely if possible. My husband has a cell phone but we have it at least 2 walls away from the bedroom. I still struggle some nights. Hard to tell the rhyme or reason sometimes.

I always tell people to start a bit warmer first, and then move to cold water. It was too cold at first that it could be a bit shocking to the nervous system, but if you work up to it after 3 to 5 showers, then it will add a relaxing effect after! But definitely start a bit warmer

I put about 3-4 cups when I do an epsom salt bath, so quite a bit! I'd give it another try now that you're better. It's definitely something you don't want to push yourself to do, but what you could do is have someone set it up for you so all you have to do is hop in!

SAUNA + SMELLING VICKS helps. I'm a Registered Nurse who has had fatigue since having covid in July 2021. I can't breathe out of my nose right now and my sleep apnea has gotten worse. I am unable to get good sleep. JUST switched my shitty hmm insurance to PPO and going to find the right doctors who can help me. Healthcare in America isn't the best esp since it's run by insurance companies who dictate the care for patients. It is our duty as patients to do as much research as we can to try to find the right doctors. It sucks for people who are stuck in jobs where it is stressful-which further affects their autonomic nervous system. Thanks for your vids. Hope ppl can stay hopeful and find the help they need.

I realised having covid caused a trauma to my nervous system, hence long covid ! I’m learning to switch to parasympathetic, remove the trauma of having covid, I’m seeing a lot of people finally starting to make videos about how covid triggered the nervous system to sympathetic, BUT you have the power to work on youre nervous system and get it back to parasympathetic

    • @cfsrecovery
      @cfsrecovery  2 роки тому +7

Absolutely! From the research I've been doing and what clinics have been finding out is that long covid can trigger CFS aka a nervous system disorder. So the principles and frameworks I teach can be applied to a case of long covid ***AS LONG AS*** there aren't any other underlying factors that explain what's going on (micro clotting, anything showing up on tests, etc)

I kept the night mode on my phone all the time and then at night I set my iPhone up to have a filter that is red. So there is virtually no blue light coming from it. I don’t remember how to get it on there since I did it years ago but I found how to do it on UA-cam. You set it up in the settings so when you triple click the side button the option comes up to put the red filter on. Also for people that don’t have an iPhone there is a free filter called twilight. I believe you can get it for computers too. But again you can set the red intensity to really red or just mild but I have my kids do it mild in the day, just a tint and then on the rare occasion they are on their phone in the evening we put it all the way to red.
Also on your tv put it to the warmest setting. On mine it’s the movie mode then I went into advanced settings and put it in the warmest tone. You will still get blue light from the TV but it will be a lot less straining. Then in our house I only use incandescent light which are closer to the sunlight spectrum and easier on the brain and eyes much less stimulating. I also use Edison bulbs in my living room that are Amber colored, and not the LED ones that flicker that needs to be incandescent. Then about the last hour of watching TV in the evening I put on a red near infrared light that I also use in the morning to expose myself to near infrared light, but turn off the other lights. Just turning on the Infared light and putting that red light in your environment kind of cancels out some of the blue light from the TV. I have four of them clamped on our TV stand, the 250 watt ones. In the morning they are tilted toward me when I want my light exposure, in the evening I turn on one until the upward towards the TV so it’s not blinding us but we are getting that red light in our environment. Anyways I thought I would share all of the tips and tricks I have learned about light exposure over the years. Also getting that natural sunlight first thing in the morning and the sunset light in the evening would be best case scenario, but since that’s not always an option I use my infrared lights to get exposure from the red light first thing in the morning and on the evening, it helps decide your circadian rhythm and sleep better. Sorry so long but it took me years to gain all these hacks so I thought I’d share for anyone who would want to use this information!

Yup. Even a short, 30-second cold shower can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system and help calm down your body, making it a simple and effective way to promote relaxation and reduce chronic neurological symptoms. I wouldn't even do two minutes of it, 30 seconds is more than enough!

No. You want to warm naturally. IOW don’t hit warm water after going cold for a couple. Do your warm cleaning as usual but end with at least 2+ minute cold water rinse. Do not warm up near a heater or rub with warm towels. Just pat dry and warm slowly. I’ve still felt cold hours after a good long cold dunking.
