Well technically in that particular moment Kratoos wasn't thinking like a general, as he wasn't thinking at all. Just killing everything in front of him. Like if he had just looked around in there for a few moments he probably would have seen his family, and I imagine they probably tried calling out to him.
@@sebastianb.3978 It's not kratos fault he killed his family.A lot people forget he was under a spell from ares(the og God of war) that made his rage go to next level and while invading a random village Ares transported his family to said village without kratos knowing. A COMPLETE SETUP!

Not really a nod, since Kratos explicitly told Atreus about his time in Sparta as a general in the last game, so it was more of a callback more than anything else.

@dragon dx2 A nod to something is more of a subtle implication to a past event. A callback is simply refering to an occassion that has happened already. I simply pointed out it was more of a callback since there was a scene in the previous GoW where Kratos gives this exposition dump to Atreus about his time in Sparta as a general, and that he remembered it with contempt.
Hardly a "little nod" and more Kratos' entire inner conflict and his entire character. But sure, little nod...

Fenrir dying was the perfect time to train a kid who has trouble controlling his emotions. Kratos was only using the moment to turn it into something good... in his own way. Kratos was only looking out for the boys future. He needed emotional fitness. Period.
