** J. Mitchell Johnson with the help of a team of tireless volunteers wrote and directed the creation of this 12 minute video honoring the life of the now late, great, and Fort Worth-born performing artist, Stephen Bruton. The video was produced for a November 13, 2009 Lone Star International Film Festival event where Kris Kristofferson personally accepted the first annual Bruton Award for excellence in the performing arts.

I wish he could have lived to see last year's Oscars and this year's Grammys. The record store interview came from my Rocking the Boat shoot and I gave it to the Lone Star Film Festival for their Stephen Bruton Award. Kris was the first recipient. I am grateful I got to know him a little.

Even though I hadn't kept in contact with Stephen over the years, his passing was a real shock and even now it's hard to accept that he's not around. To me he was larger than life, framing life with unequaled Brutonian wit that charmed and dazzled,.... beyond funny! Richly eclectic. Generous, thoughtful. He'd get so excited, taken by some phrase he would later or had integrated into a song. "Like the waves upon the sand..." "I want to be diamond in the crown of creation". So terribly missed.

Slept in Houston Railway station in Dublin the first night I heard this guy play a concert, been trying to sound like him since, still nowhere close, what a picker. Met him once many years later in a hotel bar in Cork city after a Kristofferson concert he was having a quiet beer with Donnie Fritt. Seemed very surprised that we knew them and the back ground i had on them I still have a photograph of him with my then girlfriend now wife. One of the best days of my life for sure. Such a loss, such a beautiful talent.

He was quite a guy, and an incredible musician. Always thought he looked like an angel

Thank you for posting. By chance I saw him play at Antone's in 2006 without knowing who he was. He really left an impression, he won't be forgotten.

Damn what have I missed!! Didn't learn of Stephen until after his passing. I am sure I heard and saw him from long ago because I have seen most of what is here. Just never had a name to the face. Fantastic video, thanks for posting. Keep the music alive.

Col Dickenson!🇨🇱I saw Stephen many times at Saxon Pub in Austin with The Resentments w/ John T Graham & Scrappy Jud. He was a good man (he played Bluegrass too after all) & great guitarist. He died too young & sorely missed🎸
