ND MX-5 Miata Rearview Camera Installation

  • Brandon shows us the step by step installation of our ND1 rearview camera into a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
    www.flyinmiata...
    Give your ND an integrated rear view camera! These are especially useful on RFs, but we like them on all our cars. This is a full factory-style integration without the weird little bumper pimple that the 2019 cars got. Shift into reverse, and the screen on your dash changes to the camera view including side traffic alerts. Head forward and you're back to normal.
    The distance indicators on the screen are more useful than some of the other aftermarket cameras out there. They range from 8" to 28" from the bumper, making it easy to back in perfectly.
    Not compatible with Sport models that do not have a screen for obvious reasons. Easy installation, it's plug and play other than one new hole you need to drill above the license plate. The kit even includes the right size hole saw.
    Flyin' Miata is the world leader in Miata performance. We offer a wide range of parts for all years of the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

    Installed this in my RF today. Overall this video was super helpful and accurate. A couple of additions:
    1. The RF is more difficult than the soft top to push the plug from the front through the trunk. Don’t even bother trying to feed it without taping it to a coat hanger.
    2. Don’t stick the tape on the hole until after you push the plug through the impact foam (of course, make sure it’s looped through the tape first!) I put the tape on first, and the peel came off while I was trying to push the plug through, which ended up messing up the stickiness. I’ll be buying some Scotch Extreme and cutting a replacement.

    Absolutely the best instructional video I have seen. I was totally intimidated by the prospect of taking out interior panels, but Brandon explained how all the fasteners worked and what to slide where when putting it back together. He made the job quite doable for a guy who has never removed a piece of trim in his life.

    At 20:30 Brandon grabs a longer drill. I used a 3/4 inch paddle bit. It is the perfect size. It just fits through the hole you have drilled in the bumper cover. And since a paddle bit scrapes the foam rather than trying to twist through it makes a clean hole with the bits falling out on the floor.

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, My wife just obtained a 2017 Miata Hard Top RF Grand Tourning, RED. in color, and I watched your video twice then watched it step by step and completed the installation. I got lucky by fishing a Coat Hanger from the Trunk to the right side of the Passenger compartment, taped the wire to it then pulled it through. I got caught up a little fishing the wire from the camera up through the bumper and I think the toughest part was removing the tape from the harness in the trunk so I could fish the camera lead through the rubber seal. It worked first try, cleaned up the wires with Zip Ties and it looks perfect. Thanks again this was a HUGE help and it turned out a great success.

    Nice to see someone just taking apart _one_ side - the other videos show the driver (left) side being pulled apart (the sill and the weather strip, etc.) I'm sure I'll go full on OCD with the wire ties and felt tape but looks pretty close to factory (actually better since the 2019's is right in the center of the bumper cover and doesn't look as good as this).

    Thank you so much for this very detailed video, i just installed this rearview camera on my 2017 RF and you made it very easy ! For RF owners, if you struggle to pass the cable to the trunk, i used an electrical copper wire (22 awg or something like that). Electrical wire only, i started from the trunk to the front (easier to find a path this way for me). When the wire passed all the way through, i taped the cable to the wire, front side. Then, back to trunk side, i pulled the wire gently with the cable attached to it. There is not much space, but it passes without trouble.

    I just installed my backup camera and everything worked out fine! The video was extremely helpful. First, I watched the whole video, then when I got brave enough, I went step-by-step, pausing the video as it was time to do the next thing. The ONLY thing I would mention is if you have an RF like me, things will be a little easier with the top down, and you need the battery for that, so lower the top before starting.

    An additional comment.
    I found the SEATBELT TRIM piece easier to get in position if I removed the trim piece on the front of the stock roll bar. It just pops off (the rear black plastic piece is bolted on) and now the Seatbelt piece can be seated and the roll bar trim now just pops back on

      Not a bad idea, would save you the headache of tearing everything apart again! When I did the Apple CarPlay install, there was a fair amount of wiring that needed to be stuffed back there. If anyone's done both mods, I'd be curious to know if it was a problem having both the CarPlay wiring and this jumper for the backup camera all jammed in there...

    Thanks for the video and a great product. Installation was simple. The only problem was me.
    Managed to drop the 10mm from the Screen bracket, figured it would roll out but couldn't find it.
    Stole a 10mm bolt from the door bushing.
    Then found the lost bolt had teletransported to the floor. Trip to Mazda saved
    Then I realized I forgot the rebolt the front kick plate.
    FINALLY, I thought I had screwed up the drilling when the camera cable came out by the muffler. This actually made it easier to feed back up into the trunk.

    Great video, installed mine following this instruction in under 2 hrs. You can use your stock long antenna to guide the wires! I find it super helpful because it is very long and very flexible to work within those tight spaces. Also, the video had the roll bar installed behind the seats. It seems like the stock setup prevents the plastic piece at 9:27 to be detached? I just loosened it enough to allow the piece after that to be taken off.

    Good video. I'm on the fence about doing this because if I ever wanted to pull the bumper (I may want to install a hitch in the future), it looks like it would require undoing the wiring. Is it possible to have the connection go on the other side of the rubber grommet so that you have more of a quick disconnect?

    • @JordanManfrey

      that's an argument for not sealing it up with the rest of the wires in the rubber plug in the trunk wall and the inside of the bumper. • @FlyinMiataVideo
      @FlyinMiataVideo  4 роки тому

      There are a few different ways to change the wallpaper on the screen. On the earliest cars like Andy, you can SSH right into the infotainment system and upload files from the command line. It's more common do it with a thumb drive, the car will execute commands on the drive and can load in new images as well as other system tweaks such as "pause on mute". Check the Mazda3Revolution. com forum for some good information.

      Fishing the camera wire to the trunk/boot is a LOT more of a challenge I was able to get mine back there by using one of those "grabbers" with the little claw at the end (I didn't use the claw part for the wire just taped mine to the end - I started with a wire fish-tape - don't use that! I had caught the end in a wire bundle and spend about 2 hours getting it freed up. Other than that it's pretty much the same as the convertible.

      It's a proprietary plug on the end of a jumper harness that bridges into the factory unit. Brandon goes over all the details in the video.

      eBay is likely to be the cheapest option. Should be around $150. For the software, check out the master thread on Miata.net for a good guide.

    I honestly would've rather done this than have the butthole on the bumper. So far it's the only thing I really don't like about my ND2.

    Any thoughts or experiences in combining this with the available Apple / Android Auto kit (0000-8F-Z34) install? Thanks

      @FlyinMiataVideo  4 роки тому

      We haven't installed the Apple kit, so we don't have any direct experience to share. We know they're compatible and it's very likely that it would be easiest to install both at the same time.

      @@andrewniblock4464 I just did them at the same time too - only requires taking off a couple extra pieces of trim by the little usb box you have to replace.
      Another perk is that the OEM stereo upgrade kit comes with more foam tape than you need, so you can use it when bundling up the camera wires in the trunk.
