Today I'm going to be answering a viewer's question: "Antonio, when should I wash my dress shirt?"
Basically the gentleman had spent quite a bit of money on a very nice dress shirt and was wondering how often he should wash it and also how he should wash it.
It seems like a simple question, but once you start spending good money on clothing you start to worry:
"Am I taking care of it the right way?" "Is it going to last as long as I want it to?"

For any good quality dress shirts, the perfect wash is in cold water (except white shirts, on warm), liquid soap (Tide or something like that), on delicate cycle and never put them in the dryer. On a hanger and in about 1 day, it is dry. A front load washer will also help as Antonio says (newer washing system).
Only need to iron them and it will be perfect. I have 10 bespoke shirts and even after a month to 3 years, they have not lost their colors or shape. Sweat stains can be removed with Oxy Clean or anything like that (Antonio says it!!)
Simon Blanchet You got it!
Antonio - I feel you've been offering great videos lately. Keep it up! Thanks!
oakstwentyfive solid comment -thanks!
I love your videos. amazing speaker, great smile, and great feedback.
I just started buying dress shirts last week and pondered this exact question. Great timing!
Douglas Ray III great!
Very informative, Thank you!
Great tips, I'm an insurance agent and always like to dress well. I also was thinking the same on how often to wash my dress shirts, I was afraid of ruining the fabric too quickly on my expensive shirts. Thank you for the video.
Gerard Arellano great to hear!
Great video Antonio! Keep up the good work
Mats Ingels Thank you!
Good advice. I think it also depends on the person. Some people are more prone than others to sweating etc.
Those front loaded washing machines are a godsend. My clothes last much longer since I got one and I will not go back to the top loaders. Having said that I have noticed that sometimes the sleeves of a shirt or jacket can still get tightly twisted, so I would use the laundry bag on an expensive item.
William Albert you got it
Nice video. Never thought about using laundry bags before but it makes sense. Typically for my really nice shirts I will do spot cleaning or take it to the cleaners when it needs more then a spot clean. They only charge a dollar per shirt usually and then I don't have to worry about it.
Steven Butler Yeah - the laundry bag is a small things that will save you big tears (had one of my shirts shredded in our old washer!)
What about drying ? Is a dryer to aggressive ? Should we use low heat ? Or just let it hang somewhere ?
Thank you for your videos.
Hey Antonio, I heard that you're leaving to another country. Will you continue to post more videos when you are there? How many videos per week? I need to know man. I REALLY like your channel and I could hardly go another day without it.
Great video as always!!
Michael Fied thanks!
Appreciate the advice. Thanks for the video.
Ezio Auditore You got it!
I love your channel. It's simply incredible.
Is there a way to prevent the shirt from shrinking a little when washing it? I wash my shirts in 40 degrees celcius (104 degrees fahrenheit) and if the shirt is new, it shrinks maybe 1 cm on the length. Should I wash it in as low temperature as possible?
Hey what video did you mention a link to the 100 books every man should have in their library
Have you made any videos on whether or not to have the dry cleaners use starch on your dress shirts? (and suits?)
Hi,
Can you tell me how to keep my shirt collar clean? I seem to always have a dirt ring around my dress shirt collars
sir please make a video.atleast which type of shirts any engineering student should keep??
i've already given a chance to the undershirt's before... but i didn't get used to them. Now that the weather is getting cold in my country it's time to try again.
Gustavo Torres Pessoa great!
I love your videos sir and yes I understand you should wash your dress shirts only when they are dirty but what if they are not dirty but you can still smell the cologne you was wearing last
Prosper Junior R Wash it only when it’s dirty.
Is your jackets chest pocket on the right side? I have never seen that before. I'm assuming it's custom but why did you decide to have it made that way?
thanks for your advise, but i am a bit confuse should we wear undershirt while wearing dress shirt. Since i read from some style advise that better not wear undershirt,
Wear an undershirt, this goes doubly if you're wearing white! Why? Antonio touches on this in a later video, but you shield from sweat-stains (mentioned here) and you keep your skin-colour from popping through the white AND your nipples from showing.
Hey Antonio, great videos man! But What about dry cleaning?
Ryah Bernell thanks for the video suggestion - added it to my list
What is the best way to keep white dress shirts clean?
I think something that should be noted is that shirts should be washed by hand rather than by the machine (and of course, air dried naturally and ironed with the correct temperature).
Julian Park makes sense!
Antonio THAT jacket you are wearing does not fit you perfectly, especially from the shoulder
@5:30 - Center agitator washing machines are not bad for shirts....as long as they are high quality and maintained. What are bad for shirts....and all clothes in general....are top loading high-efficiency washers. With an agitator or front loader, the clothes are cleaned by agitation or the movement of water...with a top loading HE the clothes are cleaned by rubbing the clothes against other clothes...that's what the come out so mangled and wrinkled from top loading HE washers...also they spin the clothes too much for non-iron dress shirts.
the jacket pocket being on the other side is really confusing, don't think i can get used to seeing a pocket square on that side.
Hi Antonio, I have a question about Poplin shirts and how to keep them looking new because with each wash it looks a bit older with the collars being whiter ( may have been from the ironing). Please let me know, thank you.
kickazz1234 Poplin has a faint dimpled texture that comes from using two different sizes of threads in the weave. The dimples make tiny air pockets, making the garment much more breathable and faster-drying than a flat weave.
What would you say, or advise, about rolling up sleeves on a dress shirt? I have a compulsive habit to roll up my sleeves to the mid-fore arm area. Is that hard on the elbow fabric?
vectorm4 Keep your sleeve roll below your elbow - this looks better and draws the focus to your forearms vs. your 10 inch biceps. Forearms are normally closer to an average size than biceps - which vary greatly.

woolite is very nice
Question: How dry cleaning affect a dress shirt (or any other nice garments)? Because, it is what I usually do with dress shits. I gave up detergents and machine washables a while ago.
Jose Salas Here's a complete guide to dry cleaning from Art of Manliness www.artofmanliness.com/2009/11/05/dry_cleaning_guide/
Thank you! And thank so much for all the info that you put out there in your videos. I've already built my wardrobe pretty much based on your recommendations.
hello your videos are awesome i am a new subscriber too would you make a video considering how to buy a good formal shirts.
furqaan shaikh Here you go: www.realmenrealstyle.com/identify-high-quality-shirt/
thank you bro :)
I have a question, do you dress up every day? Like do you ever just wear jeans and a t shirt?
Reno Williams Dressing “sharp” does not mean dressing in a suit - it means sending the right signal with your appearance. I’m a custom clothier who owns an information site about style - if I wore a t-shirt and jeans I would create a disconnect with my brand. :)
I wonder about the science behind this. Most of us know how bacteria grow exponentially with time, especially after coming into contact with human skin. What kind of effect that bacteria would have on the shirt I don't know, but it would be interesting to find out.
"You get access to me along with hundreds of other men"
Hehehe, I'm still a teenager :(
JosephGallagher Technically, you're a young man so you're included :)
Or just do it like they did in the 19th century: wear shirts with detachable collars and cuffs. Since I transitioned from attached collar shirts to collarless ones, I went from washing them every day to once a week.
I just swap the collar and cuffs everyday, and at the end of the week wash everything together with my shirts.
What is the effect on the life of a dress shirt of having it dry cleaned as opposed to washing in the traditional manner?
Thanks,
Jim
Jim D Depends on the cleaner - I count them as the same and don't expect more than 70-100 washes this way at most.
Jim D Dry cleaning solution is less corrosive than water, but sweat stains are water soluble. You must also consider the fabric and how your cleaning solution will affect it.
+Jim D dry cleaning doesn't remove the odour / bacteria , that's why socks, underwear , shirts etc are laundered .
Antonio, would you ever suggest dry-cleaning your dress shirt or is this unnecessary?
***** Stains that require quick attention such as mustard or red wine, especially on light colored or silk fabrics, should be taken to the cleaners the next morning.

Bro. what's the company other than wool & prince making wool dress shirts that have high endurance? Can't remember which video you mentioned them. Name Starts with an "L"?
otto man 5th and Lamar? www.realmenrealstyle.com/resources/mens-stores/
No Sir, It's the wool shirts that can be worn for weeks without washing. Sorry didn't put that in first message. I know your busy!
how to wash lenin shirts??
dont wash your 100d dress shirt dry clean it dude its like 3$ BE SAFE DONT DO IT AND THEn YOU GOT TO IRON IT
why don't you hand wash the shirts? That is what I do :s
Point no. 1 is not applicable in 2 seasons Asia climate.
So how often should i wash my dress shirt?
AnotherBrownKid :) www.realmenrealstyle.com/3-tips-wash-dress-shirts/
That article is actually much more thorough than the video!
Every time it has been worn once it should be in the laundry basket ,if not you are a dirty slob.
So it's kind of like your car, you don't wash it after every drive only when it needs it.
drewbiedrewbie I like that analogy..........
The skip button just takes me to the start of the video..
what do you wear under the shirt? (nohomo)
plazmaman you can wear it with an undershirt
i mean what do you wear under the shirt in this video. doesn't seem like you're wearing any
Oooooh, so THAT'S the point of an undershirt!
How do you survive with so much clothes on? Don't you overheat like mad, especially in summer? oO
+Nate Snow When you wear breathable and lightweight fabrics, you can survive the hot weather/
I only wear a tshirt and leatherjacket/wool-sweater in winter, so alot of layers seems like it'd be superhot. (From what my american friend says, we have about Alaska weather and temperatures here.) But I'll try and remember that. I do like some of the layered looks.
I don't want to wear a undershirt because I get too with it
i better handwash .
I just take them to the cleaners
I'm thankfull that we can't smell you through video :P
Love your videos Antonio, but please get to the point quickly. You take 1 min 32 sec to start to address the question. It's unreasonable to expect people browsing the internet to have long attention spans.
Don't mean to be rude - I just want the best for you and you seem someone who'd take constructive criticism well.
Chris Dixon You can always skip those first minutes :D
Chris Dixon You don't love my rambling?
